I'm an older man with a progressive form of MS. Before retiring I was always the best dressed person in my office. After retiring I started to loose the incentive to dress well, usually in sweats and t-shirts, always clean and we'll fitted but very casual. I'm starting to take one day a week to revisit my sartorial past. It actually a lot of fun.
Good stuff! Thanks for commenting Jeff!
@@alwayspooh1588 I stopped taking Copaxone a number of years ago. Right now I'm mostly taking drugs for spasticity and pain. I do watch my weight closely and exercise a lot. Dang thing is that I have NEVER looked better in clothes but my dogs don't seem to be impressed.
Jeff be sure to get your hormones checked by an expert. You need your testosterone and estrodiol looked at to heal the myelin very important. If you dont have a competent doctor look up Dr Eric Fete he has helped me with my TBI.
Good luck legend.
Good on you Jeff. My sartorial is more along the lines of Targetorial. Yet it still gives a spiritual boost in an overwise until now, lost world. Welcome back!
Now I have a few good clothes and a very suspicious wife to deal with. 😂
Always great recommendations. Late fifties here, just a couple years ago I realized how dated I looked. Frankly, I looked sloppy. I really appreciate your posts, they've helped me continue my new look. Just as you said, once I broke free I realized it was easy to look so much better, and trying new colors, cuts, good shoes, I feel and look younger and proud. Gentlemen, make your move, start improving today.
John is so gorgeous and handsome American man. His style is powerfully attractive and he radiates warm energies that melt you and leave you feeling amazing.
A few weeks ago, I switched from pairing the socks to the shoes to pairing them to the trousers… it looks 💯 better👍🏻
True legend!
Totally agree!
Yeah North Carolina white sneakers won’t go over too well they look great you can wear them once in a while but in most parts of North Carolina we have a red clay problem if you get that on white sneakers forget it the stain will never come out even if you are living in the inner cities like Charlotte Raleigh areas
6:31 Solid point I went to Gap and their short linen shirts were super boxy. And if I bought them id have to get them tailored. Which is the point. Only in modern america are we buying off the rack stuff. And shirts and suits are made to be tailored in the first place. Better to buy a $100 suit or $10 dress shirt and get it tailored and look a million bucks..
Sometimes I have to choose between quality and fit. In those cases, I always choose fit over quality. I may wear out the low quality item far faster, but at least *I'll wear it.*
The list is spot on. I own everything else on this list (usually multiples), even though I maintain a lean wardrobe.
Great point Karl! Thanks for commenting!
My favorite sneaker brand…Collars & Co
Hello from Wales in the UK, John! I've been watching your videos for about 12 months, and they have transformed my appearance and style, so a big thank you. I've recently started wearing a few different waistcoats (or perhaps vests to you in the US!), a little tricky at first to size correctly but 2 or 3 casual or smart waistcoats add so much more interest over a shirt...
Consequently I have also started wearing my trousers higher-up (mid-rise), using braces (or perhaps suspenders to you in the US!) instead of a belt. Quality such as 'wiseguyoriginal' suspenders look great, and make your chino's and jeans much less baggy at the back-end...
Perhaps you can make a video about these items too sometime..?
Thank you and best Regards... Richard.
Thank you John. I must look into it getting some draw organisers. After seeing your sock draw it puts mine to shame.
Loved wardrobe foundations segment, any contacts for full length (knee high) long socks in wool , hard to source here in Australia
I am in my 60s, I dress very modern and wear no-show socks with my leather sneakers. Love the look.
Always well spoken with great suggestions! Thanks
The most comfortable shoes, bar none…GEOX!
I’m enjoying your suggestions and using your advice to help improve my husband’s style! really like the casual sneakers you show in basic colors. What brand of shoe are those? And is there a specific store that carries them? Thanks so much!
Thank you John, always love the great information and content. Just so you know, I miss the intro you used to have for your videos 😂
Haha same here- that intro was solid!
Thank you!
Thanks John! This is very helpful. greetings from the Philippines
Can you recommend a good t-shirt company? In white, black and greys? Should they be in cotton or a blend?
Thank you
You're welcome!
Great video as usual John. I have always worn long socks, but I just recently bought my first no-show socks. I just have to say I love them. My legs feel so much cooler, even when wearing full length pants.
Yep! Totally agree!
John, you're the man. Thank you for this one!! Have a great weekend. #legend
Right on point as usual, John. I didn't spot any omissions (in my opinion) except that you will need a couple of ties to go with the dress shirts and suit.
I would love to see you do a video on picking suit or sport coat material and patterns based on body type. For example, someone with a somewhat larger body type who likes vertical stripes should they gravitate more towards pinstripe, wider stripe, subtle stripes or an embedded pattern in the material. Contrasting color stripe obviously makes the suit more versatile with more potential shirt and tie combinations. Are there some caveats that you would extend?
Please keep them coming.
Thanks Michael!
Essential information!! Thanks so much!
You are very welcome!
Surprised no mention of polo tops
Great video on the basics!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Another great video John!
Glad you enjoyed it!
Enjoy your videos _ good "start | foundation" list.
Thank you!
Hey John,
Where can I find a great brand of T-shirt that can be worn under a suit?
Thank you, John. A great video! Lots of tips. Keeping this one in my '40 Over Fashion' folder.
Right on!
As always wonderful information thank you
Thanks for watching!
Another awesome & helpful video. Thanks John

Thanks Gregg!
Cool socks
Always appreciate the quality content John!
I appreciate that Kris!
Great video John!
Thanks Chris!
What are the no-show socks you use?
I like the ones from stance.
I ❤your videos 😊
Thank you!
Good content John, what are your go to suit brands that you own?
Great video as usual. I’ll definitely give those socks a try. It’s one of those things I have a hard time finding.👍
Thanks William!
Perfect timing, I was in need of new socks and ordered a set.
I avoid white sneakers for the reason I have size 14 feet and white makes them look even bigger.
These days, high price does not always mean high quality. Videos and forums are the places to start to learn about the various recommendations and reviews of clothing items and shoes.
WELL, what's with the crazy weather lol? OH well, I love the rain. Solid video as usual John. Say were you guys on the Ortega Highway between San Clemente & Lake Elsinore/Hemet area in the rally video? That can definitely be a challenging drive, but that view approaching Lake Elsinore is stunning. LEGEND! oh btw HaPPy ALmoST biRThDaY! ;)
No, that was not Ortega. We started off in San Diego and went a bit north east from there.
I am working on a revamp of my wardrobe. I’d like to get a nice dark wash pair of jeans, but would prefer something a little more upscale than typical Levi’s or Wrangler type denim. I am a bit larger waist (44-46) and have a hard time finding nice quality items in my size. Can you make a brand recommendations to check out?
If you have a Nordstrom nearby, I would encourage you to stop in and start poking around the menswear section. Lots of different brands at a little higher prices, but sometimes it’s worth paying a little more for quality and fit.
Try Brave Star
Legend: very nice looking clothing 😊Great sponsor too 😅
Thank you Frank!
I'm looking to build a summer capsule wardrobe. Smart casual-casual.any tips?
You might want to do something similar to what I did when I went on vacation last year. I wanted (mostly casual) outfits while hiking around during the day, and smart casual outfits for the evenings.
For my evening wear, I brought three linen/cotton blend button up shirts (blue, pattern, lilac). I also brought two pairs of chinos (khaki, gray). I then rotated through the six combinations: blue+khaki, pattern+gray, lilac+khaki, blue+gray, pattern+khaki, lilac+gray.
I did something similar with my t-shirts and linen shorts (but I brought a few more, since I expected to sweat in them). I brought two pairs of shoes (minimal gray, minimal blue) with matching belts. I brought two linen flat caps to deal with the sun. I also brought no-show socks, since it wasn't going to be cold enough to need full-length socks.
I only brought one watch (a dive watch, since I went snorkeling), but I brought a selection of quick-release watch straps, so I could make it match any of my outfits.
I brought two pairs of eyeglasses and two pairs of sunglasses … mostly so I'd have spares.
I also brought a few items that were specifically related to vacationing, so I'll skip those.
If I had needed something more upscale, I would have brought an unlined linen/wool blend sports coat (or two) and some loafers.
Before I started building my vacation capsule wardrobe, I had to determine how much of my time would be casual, how much would be smart casual, and how "smart" the smart casual would need to be. I also had to balance that against my space requirements, and the number of days I needed to cover before things got washed.
You will have your own requirements. Start there.
You did a good job, respect, interesting how many kilos you had in your suitcase?😊
Unfortunately the discount code doesn't work.
John, I have a outdoor summer wedding I’m attending. Can I wear white sneakers with a gray suit with a white shirt and no tie? Or is that too casual?
Maybe confirm the dress code, but I might say that the sneakers are a little too casual. I might go with loafers instead. But again, check the dress code. There’s so many differences it’s hard to give exact advice.
best no-show socks?
Stance
With no show socks you look like a fool as soon as you have to enter someones home and take of your shoes. And in Norway it is customary to take of your shoes inside. I really don't get the no show, bare legs thing at all. To me it just looks like you forgot to put on socks if you are wearing pants. Guess it's more of an italian thing. :D
BLACK SHOES and nothing else. Dress, casual, and athletic. Brown - you're a bumpkin. White and wild colors you're an adolescent - or younger. Socks are always argyle. Argyle looks clownish when displayed, IMHO. We're over forty, after all...
Brown shoes should be banned...end of.
