This man wrote the soundtrack to the absolute best times of my life. When VH1 came out you could hear the lower jaws of a million guitar players simultaneously hitting the floor! I’ve wrestled with the fact that I cried more when Eddie died than I did when my own father died and my father and I were close. Rip king Edward!
Masters are abundant in this day in time. Another Masterpiece is Eric Johnson’s performance at Austin City Limits with Cliffs of Dover. I think (.?) it was performed before Eruption and won a Grammy for it. Another incredible guitar player.
I was blessed to witness his alchemy live on the 1984 World Tour when I was just 16. I can tell you this.....we will not see another talent like his in this lifetime!
He said the greatest ROCK AND ROLL GUITAR PLAYER. Not the greatest. But he is in my opinion, right up there with Jerry Reed, Roy Clark and Chet Atkins. A true legend
how is he doing that? said everyone who ever heard him since 1978. the simplest answer is he's just Eddie Van Halen. you're freaking out now, so imagine how much crazier it was back then. now whenever you watch Bill and Ted's excellent adventure and back to the Future and you'll understand the Eddie Van Halen references. this was how Eddie played night after night show after show, tour after tour. he must have put in over 100,000 hours of practice by himself and probably half that playing with the band either rehearsing or gigging before he ever became famous. guitar god Nuno Bettencourt give an interview about meeting Eddie Van Halen during a Van Halen tour rehearsal and as soon as they finished up the song ran over to Nuno planted a Dutch kiss on his lips and then handed him his guitar, all plugged in tuned up and tweaked to get that Eddie Van Halen sound but when Nuno started playing, it didn't sound anything like Eddie it sounded like Nuno. The same thing happened when Van Halen was just an opening act and they were opening the show for Ted Nugent who did the same thing for Eddie offering Eddie his tuned up and ready to play to sound like Ted Nugent guitar, and when Eddie started playing it sounded like Eddie Van Halen. Ted wisely never had Van Halen open a show for him again because they were so good they could have easily headlined the show and nearly stole his thunder. Van Halen has a lot of music for you to discover. great reaction and happy trails!
This guy is real!!!.....He's been melting my brains ever since I first heard his music since I was 7 or 8 yrs old....this particular solo is off " Live without a net " video which I first seen on VHS back in 87'...one of my personal favorites of all time !!!....GREAT reaction dude!!!...LOVED IT !!!!
*14:30* And imagine that, Eddie *invented* those all modern guitar techniques what *everybody* using today, he's totaly revolutioned the whole guitar world. Even he's made his own guitars by his hand. He was not just a great guitar player, he was an endless inventor. And he was the *first* guitar player, who used the tremolo (whammy bar) well. Everybody was shocked when he's came (and the whole band ofc) Yes, He was a genius, who changed the world, and infected almost the all music styles what you can listen today as well (exept some jazz, folk, and classical musics) Even effected on rap. RIP Edward Van Halen :( Thank You the all.
@3:29 It is such a joy to watch people experience the magic of EVH for the first time, but you are the first one that I've seen catch onto this -- "He threw the pick!" 🤣 Yes, he did. He had doubled-sided tape on the guitar that held something like 10-15 picks just so he could give fans a souvenir. I'm glad you enjoyed this, and thank you for sharing.
Subscribed. I like your vibe and you had me laughing. Yes, Eddie was indeed a master. There are a few top notch guitarists out there and it gets hard to rate them when they are at a certain level. EVH will always be at the very least in the top 5. He's been placed #1 on lists of top 100 guitarists of all time and I agree with that. Of course, I am also a huge Van Halen fan. His talent and legacy can't be denied tho. Eddie was not just a master of technique but he was also an innovator having basically created an entire tone on the guitar for music he composed for VH. He built his own guitars, invented and has patents on things he created to make the sounds he wanted. His genius ran deep. Now you need to listen to some Van Halen as a unit because they are legendary. They are a silly, fun, party atmosphere/good time rock band with some of the tightest musicianship you'll ever see or hear. Just for kicks, start off with Hot for Teacher official video. 👀
@@POPE. he didn't do that, but he knew his guitar inside out. The guitar he built from a Stratocaster was nicknamed Frankenstrat. So he used the body, but changed out all the parts to suit his needs. He invented something that allowed him to do some trippy things with the underside of the guitar and he even had the back panel removed from this one and at one point was strumming on the underside of the guitar. Not sure if you noticed that. He also wasn't strumming any strings during the part where everything is blue and the guitar sounds like a cello. He was just screwing with the volume dial to make those sounds. There was no one like him. Legend has it he was drunk as a skunk during this performance too, so there's that. 😆 Van Halen is definitely worth checking out. Worlds apart from Pink Floyd, but incredibly talented. I look forward to more reactions for some Van Halen and maybe lots of others if you are open to exploring different rock genres.
@@dipsydoodle7988 I didn’t think that was real at first but he actually was playing the guitar from the backside 😳 I’m not surprised though this guy knew how incredible he was.
Yeah, he was real….and it was like he was not of this world kind of like how some people said that about Kobe. I saw Van Halen 3 times and I wish it would have been 10 times that much! He had battled 3 kinds of cancer and ultimately died of a stroke, they said. We were blessed to have him in our lifetimes! RIP EVH!
Eddie built his own guitars "The FrankenStrats" and modified his Marshall heads (Guitar Player Magazine '78 or '79 or so.) He also has three or four guitar effects patents. Truly a genius.
Every now and then an extraordinary talent comes along that's heads, shoulders, hips, legs and feet above the rest (Jimi Hendrix, Keith Emerson, Chris Squire to name a few). Eddie Van Halen is a member of that small but royal group. This is an example of a gifted musician devoted to his craft. He developed and honed his incredible skills through years of daily, hourly practicing and creating. That's how Eddie Van Halen got this great. No push-button sampling of other artist's work and assembling a melody and repeating over and over because one isn't talented enough to do it himself. (Samplers and AutoTune are the biggest cancers of today's musical talent and composing). Anyway, you're reactions to Mr. Van Halen are priceless. R.I.P. Eddie.
Believe it or not, Eddie was wasted during this performance. In fact, he later mentioned that he had no recollection of even doing this solo, that's how good he was. He was a true musical genius and an innovator, who took guitar playing as we know it, to never before known horizons! He also couldn't read music, but played by ear, although he was classically trained as was his brother Alex, the drummer in Van Halen.
You’re right in saying that legends cannot go un-noticed, and in saying that please notice Freddie Mercury. He is onsidered the best vocalist in rock, he was also a virtuoso pianist and talented songwriter. He was the lead singer of Queen. The guitar God himself!! You are witnessing greatness!! I've been asking myself for over 40 years how he's doing that with his guitar. Eddie Van Halen is second to none because of the fact he has his own unique sound and he owns it like Steve Perry is second to none. They are in a class of their own. Most all electric guitar players idolize and were influenced Eddie Van Halen. A replica like Eddie guitar sale's for over 25 thousand dollars. He i think was buried with his 🎸. Eddie Van Halen took 2 different guitars brands and combined in one. Therefore he named his guitar FRANKINSTRAT AKA Fender Stratocaster!!
