The level of skill -- how many lifetimes would it take to play something like that? Hit thumbs up if you saw Eddie play ERUPTION in 1978 when he was 23????
As a guitar player of 20 years, I can tell you what's going on here. GREATNESS. What you're watching is the guy who basically reinvented the guitar. He's not even picking the strings half the solo, he's tapping on them with his right hand basically making the notes ring out like on a piano instead of a guitar. As I said, I've played for 20 years and I still can't do the most basic of finger tap techniques and believe me, I dedicated many hours to trying, A lot of people can do it to some level, but Eddie made EVERY SINGLE THING HE DID look easy. There isn't an easy part to this solo after the slow beginning while he sits on the edge of the stage. What you just watched was the hero to every guitar player for the last 30 years display exactly why he was everyone's guitar hero. Even people who didn't like metal/ hard rock in those days respected Eddie's unique undeniable talent. He transcended.
Great reaction. Eddie grew up with classical music hence the part where he makes the guitar sound like a violin and a cello. I grew up with these guys in socal. I have mad respect for Jimmy and Stevie but you just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie.
Peak EVH. I am watching reaction videos to this. Damn I miss you EVH. Guitar GOD. Thank you for changing my life in 1978 when I first heard Eruption. I pass down your greatness to my daughter and grandson. Your legacy lives on forever. Past Wolfie and beyond the stars.
Heh heh..... 7:36 "How the F××× is that even possible?" That's pretty much what us kids were saying back in '78 when "Eruption/You Really Got Me" hit the airwaves. Great vid, man! Keep 'em comin'!
YES, well said and my sentiments exactly. I was fortunate enough to see both several times in concert and I would find myself staring in wonder. One time at the Arco arena in Sacramento a buddy and I made it to the front of the pit and we were in the dead center. Eddie was sitting there with that big grin and I had a feeling of what was coming next. I started chanting "EEEEEddie!...EEEEEddie!"(I knew if I didn't someone else would have) and pretty soon the entire place was chanting his name. I will never forget marveling over how it looked like his fingers were literally twice as long as those of a normal person.
Everything Halen was doing by this time was "Hit Sh1T" LOL. So their show even from day one their whole repertoire was a hit. So they didn't save this for last. This was in the middle of the show. They actually had left behind most of their hit by this time and made new ones because of the lead singer change. AMAZING! All of it.
He did this solo almost completely off the top of his head, while blackout drunk. Apparently he doesn't remember most of it, when asked about it years later. Thing is, he could still do this before he died, and made it look even easier. The guitar was custom built/modified by him using pickups and other parts from different guitars, so that he could create what he heard in his head.
Hahahahahaha...welcome to the world of F**CKING MIND BLOWN AWAY" I love watching young people see this for the first time ever.I grew up with this mans music.I lived in the time that Van Halen changed music and the guitar forever. He has left us all now ..R.I.P Eddie... but the fans will keep growing forever.
The said thing is God said we had Eddie long enough and now he rocks the heavens with his creator searching for the last level that only God could give him R.I.P. Eddie we will all miss you and we all know and can't wait to see your final level when we see you again.
The first rock concert I ever went to is when I was 14 years old and got to see Van Halen at the old Boston Garden in 1980. Life changing event that I will never forget.
1979. I was 9 years old when I first heard Van Halen, and my life changed right there. I was into Kiss in a big way, but Van Halen immediately vaulted past Kiss. I saw my first Van Halen show at 11, and holy shit was it educational LOL. Edward Van Halen is like that cool uncle I never had even though he never knew me. That man and his guitar saw me through more shit than a little bit. I told my wife the one death outside of the family that would break me would be his, and it did. I still can't get through the video of that solo without tearing up. It makes me happy to see all y'all discovering EVH and feeling what he gave the world. Long live The King!
Gene Simmons told the story of when he first heard Van Halen playing and how he was absolutely blown away. I'm sure you must heard the same thing. Not only that but Gene really loved Eddie. He said he was a really beautiful Soul. Many if not all of his peers loved him. He was a regular and humble Man.
When Eddie was just starting out, he didn't have any money. He couldn't afford pedals for effects, so he learned how to get different sounds out of his guitar by himself. That unit he's playing, I believe they call it frankenstrat. It's a custom guitar Eddie made himself, so he could get more sound. RIP Eddie!! A LEGEND!!
Your first comment about not understanding how he can do this has rang true for those of us that have watched him grow, he is a true virtuoso, a genius at guitar. Another interesting fact people used to read guitar sheet music but because of Eddie's finger tapping style they actually created a different type of sheet music called tabulature.
What's great about that solo is the tapestry of sound he builds with it, starting out slow, building in intensity and brings it back down to earth again. His splaying has always been so melodic. Steve Vai is a technically incredible guitar player, but I don't listen to most of his stuff like I do EVH.
Thanks for this.. I haven't listen to Eddie too much since he died Oct 6 2020. I start crying every time I hear any Van Halen songs. I'm s huge fan!!! I was at this show in Connecticut back in 1986. Seen him 15 times. 3 times on this tour alone, San Diego, Los Angeles and Connecticut. This tour was called 5150 tour. I can go on but thanks bruh you made my night. Keep'em coming...
He built that guitar himself. It’s a combination of a Gibson and a Stratocaster. The Frankenstrat was Van Halen's attempt to combine the sound of a classic Gibson guitar with the physical attributes and tremolo bar functionality of a Fender Stratocaster. It was made from a Northern Ash Stratocaster body, with pickup routing which he modified to fit a Gibson PAF humbucking pickup in the bridge position.[2] The guitar has a maple neck and fretboard, chrome hardware, and was painted with a black and white striped design until arriving at its final combination of red background with black and white stripes. It has a standard six string setup and a Floyd Rose tremolo.
Eddie was the first at many things and a true legend . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and it is So cool to see the younger generations enjoy this mans talents who could make a guitar come out with sounds that should be illegal in 50 states. You will be missed Sir and RIP . Great Reaction..
This guitar solo was done right in the middle of the show. Eddie Van Halen's brother Alex is in the band on drums. And did a drum solo just before this guitar solo.
Eddie comes from musical parents, he made his guitar called Frankenstein from two different guitars his talent and innovation is nothing short of truly Blessed 🎸🤟🔥🥰
Frankenstrat ( not frankenstein) it has innovative stuff for the time like dual pickups and he figured out a way to use the whammy bar without putting the guitar out of tune.. He not only could play, but he was innovative as well.
@@timothybuchanan662 Single humbucker. Look at the early pictures. He basically stuck one Gibson pickup in the bridge position of a Strat and left the middle hole empty. All Gibsons had two pickups, like Strats have three, Teles have one, etc.
@TimothyBuchanan. The guitar is referred to as both the Frankenstein ad well as Frankenstein. Read the books. It’s clear as day. Don’t just jump on somebody when all they were trying to do is show their love for the GOAT!
The reason why so many people went to a guitar store, bought anything they could afford and tried there best to be JUST LIKE EDDIE. "Don't be afraid to make the same mistakes twice" -Eddie Van Halen.
It's so great watching people get Stank Face just from Watching this! His solo is like 3/4 of the way through the show. Millions if not Billions have imitated this, imagine being the one innovating it!
Eddie Van Halen story is a quite interesting one because at the time nobody was really doing what he thought would be cool to do on guitar. He was just really inventive with his hand and everything he did I bet if you try to tap on guitar maybe in like a few days you'll get it it's actually quite easy. But he would take notes to where he can stretch them out and really compose them.
You just listened to King Edward the greatest guitar player ever Jimi Hendrix can't touch him Stevie Ray Vaughan can't touch him Eric Clapton can't touch him nobody can
These are all great guitar players different in style to Eddie. However yes what I hear and feel from Eddie just isn’t achievable when listening to other players, he truly was one of a kind and has set the bar for many many many more generations to come.
Loved your reaction sir! It reminded me a little of my reaction when I first heard Van Halen on the radio back in 1981. This is going to sound weird, but the others out there watching and reading this from my generation will understand completely. When I first heard Eddie play it literally changed my physiology, my genetic being, my SOUL!! I was transformed to a whole new human being. The one before Eddie's music hit my ears and the one afterwards. I was absolutely astounded at how his playing took over every cell in my body. It left me in tears. I was 16 back then, and today at 60 I still tear up when I watch this video or listen to him play. It still shudders me down to my core to listen. And I have listened to him play THOUSANDS of times. I love the comments and I know much the others from my gen love that you appreciate Eddie for his genius. He truly was comparable to Mozart and Beethoven, Chopin and the other composers who still get talked about 300 years after their deaths. The same will be true of Eddie. RIP Ed.
I'm sure it's been mentioned somewhere in the comments, but most people have heard Eddie Van Halen's playing but didn't even know it. He did Michael Jackson's "Beat It". He went uncredited and didn't take a writing credit, which he could have done. As he puts it, he was asked to play the solo on Michael Jackson's song, Michael Jackson gave him free reign and Eddie wound up rearranging the song and then played the solo. He never thought it was going to be that big. And Van Halen had a rule that they would have to get the other band members permission if they wanted to do a solo gig. So he never mentioned it, thinking the other guys would never know about it. But when MJ's "Thriller" was released in November 1982, it BLEW up. And it's very obvious that the guitar solo in that song was played by Eddie, and his band members instantly knew it. 😆 "Beat It" became an iconic song, that far outsold Van Halen's record that year. It's not that Eddie needed the cash, but I'm pretty sure you could retire if you had a writing credit for a song like "Beat It".
How? Born with talent, a dad who was a musician, was taught classical piano from a very young age....and as a teen when his brother went out with friends he stayed home practicing....and spent ALL his free time playing and practicing. Even in interviews where he did not have a guitar his fingers are flying as if he is playing. There was magic in his body...others would play on his gear and not sound the same. Expiramented with gear, And he was humble through it all.
This is what we grew up listening to in the 80's. This is why all us older folks don't like most new music. No one tries anymore. There is little new talent. Not saying there is none. People just used to work harder. Eddie however, is a hard act to follow. Glad you got to see it though.
Actually l his eruption solo on album was in 1978. Many of us were blown away. Back then the great guitarists in the mid to late 70's were Ted Nugent. He is something else and not talked about either. Agnes Young of AC/DC and a very underrated Alex Lifeson from Rush.
Eddie wasn’t “the” guitar virtuoso, he pioneered the concept of it. He invented sounds that didn’t exist using methods of playing we thought was all but witchcraft. Though many of the techniques he employed weren’t entirely new, he leveraged them in ways that nobody considered to create a wall of sonic therapy that helped many of us survive our teenage years.
DEONDRE- I've been watching/listening to Edward Van Halen since 1978, and the first Day I received VAN HALEN's First Album called Van Halen Van Halen - I was in Awhh and so were many other Star Rock and Rollers. Rick Perry from Aerosmith and Gene Simmons from KISS were just shocked at what they were hearing. They both Said they heard 2 guitars at once and where was the other Guitarist ? They also said they were threatened by the new Punk in town on the scene of his amazing Skill and Talent. Well by the Time their second album came out VAN HALEN 2 - It was all over. Eddie was Awarded the Best Guitarist in 78',79',80',81',82',83. My God. This video was Shot in 1986. Their other Albums - 3.Women and Children First, 4. Fair Warning,( Unchained, Mean Street, Hear About It Later) 5. Diver Down , 6. 1984 (Jump and Panama, Hot for Teacher , Drop Dead Legs , Top Jimmy,Girl Gone Bad, House of Pain.) All amazing . I recommend to listen to their material.. Such Perfection I Thank for your Honest and Genuine Reactions and Yes - u Are Right - Waving that Hat is the correct thing to do as HE IS Truly the KING of the Guitar. I feel he tops Stevie Ray Von and Jimmy Hendrix and Jimmy Page. Not even Close. Thank you again for Immediately Recognizing the True Talent of EDDIE and GOD REST HIS SOUL .
They had to come up with a brand new way of writing sheet music because of him. Think about that, all through music history, it didn’t exist and had to be invented. If you like drums, check out his brother’s drum solo from the same concert.
I still tear up after his death when I see this. This man was my idol the reason I kept pushing on guitar no matter how hard. His son now Wolfgang van halen carries on Eddie's legacy but in his own musical way. As Wolfe said " If my dad heard me copying him he would kick my ass and say son what's wrong with you. Do you your own thing" something like that he said it in an interview it wasn't written and I was driving.
All those elemennts were things he used in various songs on various albums....including solo tracks on albums....something never really done before. The greatest guitar innovater since Jimmy Hendrix!
@7:35, you ask the million dollar question that has plagued guitar players since 1978. its all thanks to his having grown up in financial poverty but surrounded by a treasure trove of music. Eddie's hands became carefully tuned channels which unleashed true wealth into the world. He couldn't afford a guitar, so he built one to his own vision out of knockoff factory throwaway parts. he couldn't afford effects pedals, so he learned every noise a guitar could make and then wrote music for those noises. his hands were already classically trained for piano so speed and accuracy were already there. he was a genius songwriter, musician and innovator, questioning everything about the instrument and the various playing techniques, and above all, tone. he was a unicorn, a gift to us all, and the King of his and many other generations of guitarists who came after him. may he rock in peace.
No no no & no Eddie was & will always be The Greatest Guitarist ever he was self-taught tore down and built his own guitars could not read notes yet they re-wrote notes to teach his music so people could learn how to play like him you don’t see that in any other guitarist! Now shut your mouth people I will stand up for this man for the rest of my life he was and always will be the greatest now stop‼️Rest In Peace Eddie We Love You & Your Son Wolf is Laying His Music Down Hard that I Know Your Smiling Down On Him !!
This was 3 years ago but I have to comment. What a wonderful reaction. The question is how? Don’t ask me and anyone else cause I haven’t heard anyone duplicate this yet. Yea there’s greet gyuitsrust out there. There’s faster, and all that. But to create pieces of music using his technique and forget about matching the tone. It’s in his soul. And he took it with him. Leaving us with all kinds of music to listen to. RIP King Edward!
you ask how this is possible hammerons pull offs taping harmonics and feed back are eddies stomping ground. he was not the first to do any of his trade mark riffs but he immortalized them all by weaving a tapestry of sound with what mast guitarists at the time used only as tricks and sparingly he turned into a style and lets face...the man has style. RIP Eddie one of the greatest guitar virtuosos of our time probably of all time. and a genuinely decent person on top of it
Eddie Van Halen is a legend. The band are no slouches either. You should check them out as a whole now that you've been introduced to the master of guitars. Check out Hot For Teacher official video. I think you'll like it and it has a killer solo..
Van Halen songs to react too. Mean Streets, Hot for teacher, Panama, Running with the devil, or just any of them..." It is common knowledge that Eddie made a deal with the Devil, we don't know what Eddie got, But the Devil got guitar lessons"!!

Such Perfection
I Thank for your Honest and Genuine Reactions and Yes - u Are Right - Waving that Hat is the correct thing to do as HE IS Truly the KING of the Guitar.
The King
All those elemennts were things he used in various songs on various albums....including solo tracks on albums....something never really done before.
The greatest guitar innovater since Jimmy Hendrix!
That's the coolest dude you will ever see!
Funny react, man. Yeah, Eddie was top-shelf. Some gorgeous, goosebump stuff in there.
The single most influential guitar player in the history of the 🎸
On a scale from 1 to 10, 10 being the best...
Eddie Van Halen is @ 5150
@7:35, you ask the million dollar question that has plagued guitar players since 1978.
its all thanks to his having grown up in financial poverty but surrounded by a treasure trove of music.
He was brilliant 👏
Thee greatest rock guitarist ever! You should check out their studio albums. He was a master. Rip

I've watched every reaction I can find to this solo. I've never saw a bad one but you appreciate it just as much or more than any other
No no no & no Eddie was & will always be The Greatest Guitarist ever he was self-taught tore down and built his own guitars could not read notes yet they re-wrote notes to teach his music so people could learn how to play like him you don’t see that in any other guitarist! Now shut your mouth people I will stand up for this man for the rest of my life he was and always will be the greatest now stop‼️Rest In Peace Eddie We Love You & Your Son Wolf is Laying His Music Down Hard that I Know Your Smiling Down On Him !!

In other words, hold up! How the Hell is that even possible?
(Buwahahah hahahah!)
Eddie is God's instrument.
Therapist: Where did he touch you
Guitar: EVERYWHERE
He also, rearranged thriller and was the guitar solo on it. He did it as favor as long as Michael didn't put his name in the credits.
G.O.A.T.
Well done, sir!
Live in New Haven, Connecticut.
Check it out. It is Rock & Roll from start to finish.
I was there...in the New Haven Collisium in CT. Wkw...Wow... gets old.
you ask how this is possible
hammerons pull offs taping harmonics and feed back are eddies stomping ground.
he was not the first to do any of his trade mark riffs but he immortalized them all by weaving a tapestry of sound with what mast guitarists at the time used only as tricks and sparingly he turned into a style and lets face...the man has style.
RIP Eddie one of the greatest guitar virtuosos of our time probably of all time. and a genuinely decent person on top of it
RIP EDDIE😢❤️🎸
he is the shit.
R.I.P Edward Van Halen!
Rolling Stone magazine voted Eddie Van Halen the greatest rock guitarist of all time R.I.P❤❤
The doldrums, get it. Best guitarist ever, you spent time well worth it, Eddie is a phenomenon never to be seen on earth again.
Remember, this was back in 1986, no ones come close.

Edward Van Halen -- The King of Ten Fingers and Six Strings
Great vid, sir!
Glad you enjoyed it
@@_deondre Really did and you didn't look like an actor some portray in their own little studio world. Not virtue signaling but i saw your response as a new person to Eddie just like I remember the Junk Yard Band of the '90's, seeing them live as a cop, and being starstruck in awe about the drums and tom-tom synergy. I loved Motown, Classic Rock, Rap, Metal, Grunge and Alt., and all unites. God bless, and rock on!
Great video. There are the 3 kings, with no disrespect to the hundreds of amazing guitar players our there, but there was Jimi, Stevie, and Edward.
