Imagine in the 70s, the radio airwaves were filled with the likes of the Eagles, Boston, etc and then this new band called Van Halen drops a guitar solo called 'Eruption'.

Ed's pedal board was pretty simple. It was all in his fingers, man. But, over the years his board changed. At this point in his career he was using an Eventide Harmonizer to fatten the sound a bit for his wet-dry-wet setup. His delays at this time were Rolands, which for Cathedral were set to about 800 milliseconds. That was about it for effects. His signal was his Marshall Plexi variac'd to about 88 to 90 volts, into a Palmer speaker emulator, and into a Bradshaw switcher that controlled the Eventide and the delays. Again, his signal path changed over the years, but in all its forms it was a pretty simple setup. It just looked complex because he had backups, and backups for the backups. I saw his rig up close in 91, 95 and 2015, and it was pretty straight forward. I heard him play a few times without effects, just straight into an amp, and it sounded virtually the same. He used effects very subtly. They account for about 1% of his tone. The rest was in those hands.

No elaborate pedal or synthesizer setup; he moves freely about the stage using reverb, two-knob manipulations and Hoodoo. Like many bands that actually played and sang before auto tune etc., it's cool to see younger folks discovering the incredible talent of my days in the 70's and 80's. Eddie was indeed THE GOAT! From Queen to Pink Floyd; Head Bangers like Ozzie and Black Sabath to softer Electric Light Orchestra (ELO), the sheer amount of sounds and talent that came out of that era is epic and timeless. For pedals, he used a phasor, tape echo delay, and plate reverb. He has his treble and mid up all the way and bass up halfway. He uses a marshal amp and instead of using the actual volume knob on the amp, he uses a variac to control the voltage going through the amp, which in turn controlled the volume.

A lot of these guitar players mentioned in these comments are great in their own right but Eddie Van Halen changed the game there was nobody like him some after him but none before him he is the greatest guitar player to ever lived just like Neil Peart is the greatest drummer of all time his drum solo is amazing and rest in peace to both of you God's got one hell of a show going on up there right now with them to Legends.🤘

Eddie, on this particular day only played Frankenstrat. No wawa pedal, no nothing except his guitar, a pic or 5, and his sheer ability to make Frankenstrat talk to us.

He used pedals in this solo. Plus that is not the Frankenstein, it's the kramer 5150.

He’s using a delay with one repeat. Turning the volume knob off and on.

Oh yeah, and Ronnie James Dio is the rock star who popularized the devil horns sign with your hands to signify 'long live rock and roll', that's what he said it meant, but he got him from his grandmother who used it to ward off evil.

Most of his effects are on the guitar (Frankenstrat) instead of using pedals. And he moves among them all through the performance.

Jimmy and Eddie both masters. I think you should include Jimmy Paige and Stevie Ray Vaughan as masters as well.

Ever hear of a guy named "Jimi Hendrix?" The Jimi Hendrix Experience." Check it out. 1967. " The Album is "Are You Experienced." Listen to it.
Every Rock/Blues guitarist should know who Jimi Hendrix is, and how he shocked the world, and Rock and Roll in 1967.

Jimi definitely shocked people when he came out sad was head of the caliber of players around him. But he was no where near Eddie's level of skill, talent, or creativity. Eddie shocked people to the point where they didn't know if it was a guitar he was playing and they had to change written music because of him. Let's say Jimi was about 10 years ahead of players in his time while Eddie was about 50 years ahead of everyone else...if not more

If you have never reacted or listened to either Roy Clark, or Ricky Skaggs I think you should give them a try. I would say do Maliguenia by Roy, and Country Boy by Skaggs, the live version of Country Boy is the version to do of it for sure.
