- Legendary drummer Alex Van Halen has a new memoir out called Brothers. It chronicles life with his younger brother, the late great Edward Van Halen! Alex shares stories from the book and their life! He talks about emigrating to the United States, learning to speak English, and the role that music played when it came to fitting in at school. He also discusses his drumming style, developing his sound, and his incredible musical connection with Edward. He gets into the formation of Van Halen, meeting David Lee Roth, the making of the “1984” album, shooting videos for MTV, and Van Halen’s headlining appearance at the US Festival! He also shares why he was so pissed off when Edward did the guitar solo for Michael Jackson’s “Beat It,” and why Edward hated being called “Eddie.”

Only time I got to see VH was 2008 Dallas Tx. Ed's birthday. I knew I was going to be blown away with Ed's playing. What I wasn't expecting was how badass Alex was live. Dude is a machine.

Dam Alex is so cool. I bet he was fun to party with. lol I’m sober now also. His book is awesome. I’ve listened to it at least 4 times. Yes I will eventually buy it. But when I can listen to it on Spotify Premium. I do . Over and over. Especially when I’m working. I drive all day. Al , your drum set in 1981 blew my 10 year old mind. Bet you have never heard that before, 😂😂

One thing I would love to talk to Alex about is where his inspiration for syncopation came from. At times his rhythm is very jazzy or almost funk. I want to know how much playing with his Dad influenced that.
