I was fortunate to have met Eddie, Gary, Michael and Alex in Hawaii in 1998 when my band (Sunburn)Hawaii rock band got to open for them. They showed up at our show in Honolulu the day before the show and invited to open at the Blaisdale arena. Subsequently we were picked up by Scotty Ross (Van Halens tour manager) as our manager. What an epic experience, Eddie was a class act and Michael was genuine and kind. Gary was awesome. Didn’t hang with Alex too much, but the highlight besides the show was hanging out at 5150/in L.A. sitting on the same couch as Matt. Rest In Peace Eddie

My experience with VH is so different than most people in that VH3 was my first introduction to VH and Gary was the first vocalist from VH that I've ever listen to, which made listening to songs from both DLR and Hagar felt weird. Back then I only heard about VH but never heard of their songs but I admit I was late to the party - I was only 16 at the time.
The next VH experience after that was "Running With The Devil".
Yep, mine was backwards. No matter how much people trash the VH3, it's still my number one album because that was my gateway to VH. And I still love their songs, no matter which era.

Not a big fan of the album but saw the tour with Gary and they sounded great. Was cool to see someone spanning both previous eras of the band. I give Gary a lot of credit he stepped into an impossible role. The guy basically had a target on him the moment he stepped up to the mic.

Poor Gary -- Super talented guy -- ended up being a bad rebound hook up, during Eddies mid life crisis. He deserved better. It was a disastrous time for Eddie Van Halen.....Unfortunately - once you gotten that rich, famous & successful - you can always find "yes" men to help you self destruct. Van Halen III is what happens when there are no adults allowed in the room. Its a self indulgent, unfocused mess. The reason -- Eddie had cut anyone who told him "no" out of his life. Gary was just enjoying the ride.....but i bet he knew he was on the Titanic.
The worst part -- it destroyed Van Halen as an entity of growing musicians......once VHIII tanked -- Eddie quit. He retreated to being a greatest hits cover band -- went back on every word he had said in this interview, and called Sammy & Dave to save him. Obviously broken by his failure during this period....he then went through a terrible addiction spiral, too....
Eventually it would be the end of Van Halen as a world changing rock band --
By 2007 it was the nostalgia show with Dave.....and having gone to that reunion tour -- it was cool --- but looking back -- it was sad. We were excited about hearing 30 year old songs we had been playing on CDs our whole lives. It was the end of Van Halen as relevant. As creative. As groundbreaking.
This interview is the last moments of musical genius Eddie Van Halen.... his last moments as more than a 10 year farewell tour act. It shouldnt have happened this way.....

Actually I'm quite sure he is comfortable. That's how Gary is. Offstage he is more introvert, which many artists are (Prince, Page, etc..) Gary did a great job for VH. With time they would have really jelled. He wrote the most intelligent, thoughtful lyrics VH ever had, which is notable. Unfortunately, it is very, very difficult for the public to give anything new a chance in big bands.

I think Eddie’s slide playing on the tune Ballot or the Bullet is pretty wicked. Like Duane Allman, his slide tone and style is unique. To me, any way. I feel most of the material was written with Roth doing the vocals. But what happened happened. I am glad they were able to put together one more album, with Roth. Wolfgang’s bass parts were refreshing to me as well. If I remember correctly ADKOT came out in 2012. I was coming out a lot of major issues. And I tell this story all the time. The release date for it to ship was some time in Feb. it was cold & wintery. And being VH with Roth always reminded me of Summers, the best time of the year. It got very warm, and my Cd/dvd arrived early. And oddly it stayed warm, winter was done. It was a sign of what is all VH. That being said I will miss EVH, terribly, my Dad passed when I just turned 18. And he died at 55. EVH was my guitar Dad, and he too passed to early. I have difficulty with his passing so I can just imagine how Wolfgang feels

Me and my bro went to VH at the Gorge Ampitheater in summer of 98’ with Cherone as the front man. He sang tons of DLR stuff as a singer without the theatrics. I recall listening to a concert on the local radio station KZOK and they said you had better had your tape recorders on as it was only going to be played once. It was a performance in San Fran I think. It was so awesome as Gary kicked alot of the older catalog exceptionally well. He was so lost and detached from everything during this time.little did he know just how bad things were going to get for him. He let the wrong people into his life and they were not looking after his best interest as much as they were theirs. They played to his ego and had him thinking he could do no wrong and he was too fucked up to see what those people were doing to him. I just tried listening to Van Halen 3. I couldn’t - had to stop. Doesn’t work at all for me. No offense to anyone who likes it, it just seems to me that all signs indicate that Ed was fractured at the time. The indulgences and pressures probably caught up with him, which thank God he survived. The short-haired Eddie later on seemed to pull it together. I’ll say this though - have any of you heard Wolfgang’s Mammoth debut? Go listen to it. In my opinion it’s a true Van Halen album. Wolfgang has serious chops, and writes songs as good as Dave Grohl. Wolfgang not only is a master of his dad’s playing style, but he mastered the Michael Anthony falsetto - and yet it’s distinctly Wolfgang.
Do yourselves a favor and listen to it - no matter what you think about VH3, Mammoth has redeemed Van Halen.

He was really stretching out, and kind of beginning to fall into the deep end of madness as well, but that's where a lot of genius comes from. I really like a lot of the stuff he came up with. what killed this record is that from the start of 1985 van halen fans were polarised between the two lead singers
the third one who was a perfect choice had no chance at all - even if, like sammy, he could sing, and like dlr, he didn't take himself too seriously
this is still my favourite version of the band . . . although, the fact they toured australia in 98 might have something to do with it; iii has been in my cd player for all but 5 minutes since 16th march, 98 . . . it had to come out so i could convert them to mp3 :)
