    I love those Seymour Duncan Custom Customs (SH-11s). At the recommendation of my FLGS, I dropped a set into a ‘96 MIJ Jackson Dinky (DKMG), alder back, maple top, bolt-on neck I found on eBay. Left everything else stock. THE funnest guitar I’ve ever played. I put it over my knee unplugged (It showed in in tune and set up decently out of the box), and it sounded great. Plugged it in, and with the stock pickups, it sounded like an electric razor. Ergo, the pickup swap. My FLGS knows my gear, and what I like, and made the perfect recommendation based on knowing me for so long.

    Pete i've read that he went with that air gap pickup design because like you were talking about pickups can be de-magnetized. And it was around that same time he recorded Poundcake and using an electric drill can de-magnetize the pickups. He already had that intro down several years before he recorded the song because i've heard it before on older mid 80's rough recordings. So he was probably aware of the effect the electric drill had on pickups in a negative way. Great video, i'm such a VH nerd i love watching everything about the history of the band and Ed.

    Hi Pete - just a note on "3-axis CNC"; I've been a luthier for thirty years, and work in design for marine and associated things that use CNC. A 3-axis CNC is pretty much any basic CNC. Left-right, forward-backward are two of those axes (like an Etch-A-Sketch) and the third being up-down. At least in this context. Even though CNC was fairly new to production at the time (don't get me talking about Matsumoku, etc!) the real trick here was copying an existing part and using that as the basis for a programme that would move the CNC when making copies. Coordinate measuring (CMM) just didn't exist outside of super expensive industry, military, scientific, etc. which is how you take samples from an object for developing a model. The history of this small point would be an interesting video in itself, albeit for CNC dorks like me. It makes modern structured laser light scanning of objects and 5-axis CNC (which is in my game) truly space age by comparison. A lot of manufacturers were still relying on ganged copy carvers back then, which were literally a row of machines cutting parts with the positions all being guided by a pilot semi-automatically over an origin template. I imagine that this would have needed some proper programming gymnastics by the CNC coders of the time, since programs were still fundamentally developed by hand coding. Crazy stuff man. Also, that "gun stock oil" would have been Birchwood-Casey Tru-Oil or similar. It's great for raw necks.

I remember him telling me how Eddie was trying to get him to go out on the town with him but he didn't want to cuz he was tired. I was so blown away by that because all I wanted to do was to play guitar 1% like Eddie. Go hang out with Eddie on a Friday night and say no.... My friend went on in life and was a sound guy for the NFL and won a couple Emmy awards. I'm still trying to play Eruption... Just thought I would share that story cuz its all I got.

    Quick pieces of info just to complement this cool history video: JB doesn't actually stand for Jeff Beck (though he used it), but Jazz Blues as said by Seymour Duncan himself; and the name Axis was originally thought to be used by EB for Albert Lee's model in the 80s. You can find the videos of SD explaining pickups and EB guitars history.

      @PeteThorn  6 месяцев назад +2

      Hmm. I don't know, I think this is the pick up Jeff had in his t in the late 70's/80s and I think maybe Seymour just didn't want to get in trouble... going back to when I first became aware of the pick up we all called it the Jeff Beck or JB for short. Remember, Seymour also had a pick up called the EVH - technically the "evenly voiced harmonics".

    FWIW, I discovered MM guitars late in my playing life after being a Fender, Ibanez, PRS player, but I never forgot about the neck of a Sterling MM (forget what model) that I grabbed just as they were about to close for the day. I finally just went ahead and ordered a Silhouette Special, and then in quick succession, an Albert Lee HH with all-rosewood neck, and then a Luke III, also with an all RW neck. Man oh man, if only all my guitars could have those necks. "Sumptuous" is how I can best describe all of them. Phenomenal brand.

    I have a magazine from that time where Eddie talked about how the neck on his favorite guitar was digitally scanned and duplicated. And, the shape is definitely due to a wear pattern from the original guitar. He said that was one of the aspects that he really liked about the new necks, as they didn't feel new, they felt as if he'd been playing them for a while... and they just felt right.

    Eddie said the interview (17:15) "...hopefully 10 years down the road it'll be respected and looked at like a Les Paul is nowadays". As it turned out the guitar won big fans and rave reviews right away. 1992's "Guitar Handbook" by Ralph Denyer put the guitar right on the front cover next to a strat and a Les Paul. When Eddie left Music Man, they made two small changes to it; move the selector switch, and make the body end of the neck slightly wider (as many people complained Eddie's preference was too narrow and the high E string would often fall off the side of the neck). While no longer precisely Ed's preferred guitar, the Axis is arguably the better instrument for a wider public. Also, big shout out to the now retired *DUDLEY GIMPEL*, who was mostly responsible for the body design and neck profiling of the EVH guitar but also the Luke, Albert Lee, and Steve Morse, and Silhouette guitars too. Together, Dudley and Sterling Ball made arguably the largest impact on the guitar world in the last 30 years.

      My 2010 Axis sounds nothing like my EVH. Which proves to me that the pickups are also changed in some way. Music man says they are the same - I asked their sales rep. 25 years ago. But I'm not buying it.

    There was an old Guitar magazine article about this guitar from the head guy at Ernie Ball. Edward told him that the new Kramers were given to the roadies to break them in. After two tries with measuring the neck, (Eddie said nope) they put it through some scanning device and said it was thinner at the nut - from the roadies... After the third try, Eddie said - You got it.

    I loved what you said at the end - I connect with this era on a deep level. That iconic Music Man ad that you show here represents the very beginning of my guitar journey, when I started playing 30+ years ago. I didn't ever own of these guitars, but what that ad represents for my life journey learning guitar through magazines like you said, and seeing this ad constantly... it's hugely important to me. It was hanging up in my room, and the '91 Van Halen show (Milwaukee WI) was my first major concert I attended. Aside from the nostalgia of this ad, was the radio ad for the concerts ... saying "other shows sold out in 6 minutes" ... Well sheesh, I wasn't going to miss out!
    My aunt told me, for when tickets went on sale via phone - "Don't call the Ticketron in your city, call the # for a different city's Ticketron, so you will be able get through!"... and I did. Unforgettable. I bought the $35 (back then) tie dyed VH logo Tshirt and went to the show with my best friend, just at the start of my sophomore year of high school. Just perfect. I would love to play one of these guitars someday. Your intro really grabbed me too, thanks for all your work on this video!

    I found a near-mint 1996 Transparent Red Axis a few years ago in a second-hand shop in the surroundings of Milano (Italy). Bought it in a minute! Still had the plastics on the back, ha!
    Only "real" difference between those early Axis and the original EVHs is the switch position, as Pete correctly pointed out. Everything else is quite the same.
    Fun fact, mine is one of the very few hard-tail built in those years, so the bridge is a Tele-style with strings-through-body mounting, and I wanted it so bad because of my lazy idiosyncrasy for FR-style bridges. Surely one of my go-to guitars, whenever we need to rock out. Sharp and precise, cutting but not harsh, full sounding, punchy and powerful. Still love it after all these years!
