This is awesome. Will we ever witness creativity like this again? Note to all: No tone wood snobbery, bone nut discussions, finish blah, just a broke young man with endless enthusiasm, drive, work ethic, and creativity, to take throwaway pieces and change music forever.
I find EVH fascinating, not only is his playing fascinating but just listening to him talk and explain his amps and guitars are also fascinating. They will never be another EVH and it was great while it lasted and at least his music will always be around.
I can’t imagine building a replica guitar for my hero only to have him be so impressed and gracious about it while hanging out with me at the same time. Holy shit man…
Love that he made his guitar. It has so much mojo as the master created his tool based on his needs. That’s incredible for his time (before customs were available and or affordable).
Eddie's so genuinely nice, I've read countless stories of him just chillin' with fans. This project for Chip must've been mind-blowing for him knowing he was able to pull off this replica for his hero.
man, just think about ALL the innovations and changes he led to within guitar manufacturing and sales. He literally invented the super strat/frankenstrat guitars and many more things. just nuts.
I wouldnt say so much he was out of his mind because he was never out of his mind, he was the most innovative and one of a kind and hes actually quite toned down here
For someone who didn't like punk rock, that's about the coolest thing about Eddie van halen...he knows what he wants, and he gets it's come hell or high water. No wonder he was as good as he was.
I’m glad Matt was able to get this interview before he passed. Something about the way he talks about his guitar is like a cowboy and his horse or maybe gun
Eddie's middle name: Lodewijk is the Dutch version of Ludwig aka Louis ....well, we have been listening to some dude named Beethoven for hundreds of years, so I guess you are correct!!! "Be Excellent to One Another"- Bill and Ted
Hopefully by "at his best" you mean in a one on one interview and not this particular moment in time because it's sad to see him looking and sounding so worn down and unhealthy. Thankfully he got himself well.
Thank for posting this. I'm be curious what year this interview took place. The fact that Eddie is so knocked out with this replica is great, "it feels better than the original" is saying something.
This was a disc sent out in guitar world magazine, in 2008 I have it somewhere, it also had the promo for the Frankenstein guitar you could purchase something like 500 or 50 of the exact replicas were built and I believe they were selling for $20,000 maybe it was more or less . But basically that's where and what the entire disk was about if memory serves correct.
@@jerrysanders9101 You're probably right, I have the Magazine somewhere, I just figured by how he was looking it was done around the time he was having difficulties 2007-08.
Really great to see this - thanks 👍 Poor ol’ Ed seems a wee bit ‘weird’ here, no offence folks but he’s not seeming to be at his best. Still a feckin’ genius tho’. Rest well Eddie. 🇮🇪
Had he only gotten addiction in control before it was too late ?he would still be alive.Wish he did.Saws him in Jacksonville 2005.he siubded great but looked awful. It wss then I forecasted hus death and sure enough .I was regrettably right.
Not to bring out the Sammy haters, but that’s what Sammy was trying to get Eddie to do during the reunion tour era. His comments have been twisted to be anti-Eddie. All egos aside, you can tell Sammy loved the guy like a brother.
Idk. Drunk or whatever ed shows me he's human. I'm not celebrating his problem. You don't see shit like this from icons. Ed was full of alot and trying to live up to other people b.s. but, we really are lucky to have alot of shit to watch with him in it.
Dimebag sneaks around the back parking lot and slips Ed’s guitar thru the fence into some bushes. Then once inside Gods kingdom, he sneaks back there at night to retrieve it. He gets it back to his room only to find out Eddie is the worst guitar tech ever. There’s dead spots, buzzing, intonation is whack, stripped screws, .10 E & B string, won’t tune, bar wobble, etc. etc. etc. Then all the sudden Eddie shows up “Hey! That’s MY guitar!” (Proceeds to shred like Ed) Then all the sudden Leo shows up “Hey! My guitar!” “Now I’ve got the time to learn h”…”WFT!” “Someone trashed it!” “Who would do such a thing?” Everyone looks at Eddie. What?
I love Eddie. But treating this replica like it’s laced with magic is ridiculous. Eddie made the magic. A replica is all about making money. It’s not any better than if it weren’t a replica.
If the guitar inspired Ed then I would say the guitar was magic. I have one and can say it is the best playing and sounding guitar I own. But obviously it can only play Van Halen songs haha
That guitar (or at least the real one) is all over the first six albums and was used to write and record a lot of great music, not to mention it was his main touring guitar for yrs prior to 1984 so id say its got some mojo
All guitar players need to see this, poor guys paying thousands of dollars on guitars, their nothing but used. I always knew this and Ed proves it, it ain't the guitar it's the man. You can put 6 strings on a piece of wood and find the notes in your heart for $130.00
Yes, you got that right brother! I have never paid big money for a guitar...but I would pay the 5000 bucks for this replica and I would probably never play it because that is a work of art lol!
This is awesome. Will we ever witness creativity like this again? Note to all: No tone wood snobbery, bone nut discussions, finish blah, just a broke young man with endless enthusiasm, drive, work ethic, and creativity, to take throwaway pieces and change music forever.
Thank you for this! And thanks to Eddie for being so candid & fun in the interview. RIP EVH. There will never be another!
If he would be still alive, he stays changing parts of each guitar! Eddie will be missed
Forever! 🪨

I can’t imagine building a replica guitar for my hero only to have him be so impressed and gracious about it while hanging out with me at the same time. Holy shit man…
Absolutely fantastic interview. Happy for the guitar builder that Ed was so appreciative of his efforts. Can’t believe that he’s gone. RIP
Reminds me of how Val Rossi describes his motorcycle racing. He doesn't know how he does it, he just does it. Great video, thanks!
Wow! The best EVH interview I have ever seen. I am embarrassed to say that I have never seen it before. Thank you!!

He never forgot where he came from like the majority of musicians do
man, just think about ALL the innovations and changes he led to within guitar manufacturing and sales. He literally invented the super strat/frankenstrat guitars and many more things. just nuts.
Great, very specific questions...this is a great interview!
GREAT video! Also: Sooo awesome to know how much Eddie respected and loved Dimebag. ... Now they're both jammin together with Vinnie!
I love that little one-handed run he so effortlessly does at 9:28 so much.

I like it when Ed said" I might just get one of these for myself!"
Wow , I spent 3 years looking for the guitar that picked me , I feel the guitar like it's me
black and white version was cooler. i always thought the red was too much, but of course that paint job is iconic.
Awsome post!!!!
Eddie is the epitome of the greatest guitar players, yo ever exist. His style and innovation, was unmatched

Very cool story!
Wow just wow
5:44, vibes like Heath Ledger's joker =) . btw its one of the videos you wish it never ends...
What could be more rock & roll than that?
Good job Matt. Proud of you. Steve Ripley
I have a gigantic tattoo of EVH on my forearm….i want everyone to see! But how? He is freaking amazing
wish he didnt paint over the b&w, nice to hear him say that too. but the red one looks cool in its own way
Find the videos of Ed with Jason Becker. You will cry.
Hard to see him in this condition. But after all were all human
Eddie was the coolest guy
Back in the 70s Fender came out with a racing stripped Mustang, perhaps this inspired EVH to paint his guitar with stripes
Up In Smoke rock fight/battle of the bands.

The most iconoc guitar in the universe!

Matt Bruck: turns out he's a great journo!
Must be those metal guitar picks making him like that!
Function over form. My man.

With Alex,Dave, and Michael, you have to wonder who eddie Van Halen would have been?
Another bad ass guitar player, Randy Rhodes.
"...kind of like a mazola party". LOL
So high
Why didn't Ed give him to original to use? I dont get it
their only one eddie
Cocaine is a hell of a drug!!!!😂😂😂 Love you Eddie!!!! anyone watching this has been there, so it’s not mean it’s just a funny joke, peace and love.
Meth is a helluva drug
Cool video but also goes to show how great of a role pure luck and destiny play in our life. Most of Eddie’s success was by accident.
most of eddies success was from hard work and dedication to his craft
Your the accident that any simple condom would solve.
I’ll take EVH in any state of mind….

Yes i guess 2006 too. I've got this interview in a DVD sold inside a Guitar magazine that i bought in 2007.
