Everybody knows that one person who is amazing at telling a story. They can talk about anything and make it interesting and get your full attention. It can't be taught, its just something you are born with. Craig is clearly one of those types of people. He paints a picture with words so you really feel like you were there.

Ed met Dimebag shortly before he got shot. Ed was working on the release of the Frankenstein models. Dime asked if he could jump in line for a bumblebee one (from VH 2) Ed said" When you get off tour, c'mon over and we'll make one together!
Well Dime never made it back. So at Dime's funeral Ed placed his own original bumblebee guitar in Dime's casket with him. WOW

@@davedecker1725 That was a huge gesture. But, I REALLY think if Ed hadn't been out of his mind at that time, he probably wouldn't have done that. I mean, he was checked all the way out. Had he been sober, it probably would have been another guitar, or a copy or something.
@@e.l.norton Wolfgang Van Halen recently shared a story about Ed from a thing that happened few years ago. They asked him to donate one of his guitars for something like a charity, can't exactly remember what it was. But anyways, Ed thought that they meant the original Frankenstrat, and he was about to give it away, no questions asked.
So I dont think he gave the Bumblebee away just because of the state he was in at the time, he just was that kind of guy.
@@mammaQ100 I dunno if I buy that. Ed has given away and donated countless guitars over the years. With the exception of Dime, none of them were the iconic guitars. Not even his old Ernie Balls after parting ways with them. Ed WAS generous as can be. No question. But, he still had his main iconic guitars until the end for a reason.

I’ve met EVH before and your impression of him is right on the money! I It’s weird in life sometimes the situations we have to deal with and how god throws things at us but also points us in or helps getting back on track. You should write a book “ The B .J. I heard a story once, I'm not sure if it's true but the source is very reliable - he said that he somehow acquired EVH's phone number. This would've been a landline. So one day he got the guts and just called it. A guy answers and he asks if EVH is there. Eddie confirmed that it was him. He explained that he was sorry for the intrusion and he was just a fan calling and he didn't actually think Eddie would answer. Apparently this was a super low point in Eddie's life. I think it was when he was getting divorced from Valerie and he had been diagnosed with cancer. So he just seemed to need someone to talk to. He said Eddie just confided in him for a while and the entire time, he could hear him messing around with what sounded like an electric guitar with out an amp.
Sounds believable. I've always heard that no matter what Eddie is doing if both of his hands are free they're on a guitar, scales, little riffs, and suchlike, always always , like a nervous tick or something constant guitar. Right now he's tapping some riff.🤘
Sounds very possible. Around the same time these radio guys got ahold of his number and cold-called him. Same thing. He was a little out of it, but talked with these guys for about an hour a few times. Just bullshitting.

The Missus woke me up crying and for the entire day we couldn’t listen to a note of King Edward without the waterworks comin’ - so many good times with his music -it felt weird
We found watching interviews with him and other kind folks like yourself paying tribute to Eddie makes it somewhat easier to bear. We literally had a day of intensely mourning. It might sound daft but Ed’s playing and attitude is hugely responsible for inspiring me to be the person I am.

To us, it feels like the brightest and best brother, Uncle, friend mentor you ever had is not in our realm anymore. most people don’t know the King Edward was a bi-racial half Asian / half white Immigrant and that his lifelong friends were the black kids who stood up for them when they came to the US. A definitive American Dream story.

Vinnie Paul ( Paantera ) Dimebag’s brother says the last words his brother said to him was Van f+*in Halen’ their nightly ritual before hitting the stage.
Frank Zappa loved and respected Eddieand got him to teach Dweezil who was obsessed with ED When Frank died Ed was THE 1st first to call with condolences and to offer any assistance.
He was the 1st to mod his guitars in such an extreme way chasing tone, Creating the Super Strat - Humbuckers in Strat style guitars, Waxing Pickups, Variac on his amp and did his first 2 albums with the original Fender Whammy which led to the creation of the Floyd Rose Whammy Bar. His Rhythm Playing was funky, tasteful and rockin’ and his songwriting is the reason his loss is affecting grandparents, parents, kids and all ethnicities alike as Van Halen songs will live forever.

Yeah, they would play a gig for anybody, they didn’t mind. Graduations, birthday parties, Magic Mountain, etc. They even did disco covers if people wanted to hear them.
It actually worked against you getting signed. Yes, you have some local drawing power, but who is looking to record you? Nobody. Not even if your lead guitarist is a musical prodigy.
RIP Eddie Van Halen! Peace Love and Rock to you all-Still cannot believe he’s gone, great story, only thing that sours it at times Opie’s story momentum-cut-ins. Digressing, it’s just so wild it’s only been less than three weeks(posting late Oct 2020).
This story also happened in a period when Eddie was at some of his darkest with his personal demons (which we all have) but either way it’s so awesome to hear stories like these - I too am rewatching old Van Halen stories and videos and David Lee Roth interviews and any interview Eddie would do, I’m a guitar player and music fan and I love Van Halen and Eddie Van Halen, he was such an unintentionally and fiery spirited and funny human being, long live Edward Van Halen, long live Rock n Roll, love and peace to all of you!
Now seriously I have seen some interviews that included VanHalen stories but this topped them ALL. Eddie was just a guy - that happened to be exceedingly talented- but I just can’t get enough of Eddie being Eddie - thanks for this piece🎉

I wish I could've lived with Eddie in 2004. I would've talked some sense into him about how ANY guitarist (who's not in an instrumental-only band) has to share the spotlight with the lead singer. If he could accept that one fact, we would've had so many more Van Halen albums!
Problem was, David was a complete egotistical douche to Eddie (I don't want you to do solo's anymore and fuck this guitar hero shit!) and Mr. Vegas soured Eddie's opinion of what a singer meant to the band, you know, that band that has his name on it and that wouldn't have existed AT ALL if it weren't solely for him and his playing. Anyone else stepping in after 6 consecutive platinum records and at the time, the world wide recognition as the best guitar player on the planet was going to be second tier to Eddie and Alex, I don't care if it was Robert Plant or take your pick. The real problem was Sammy (even though he was a known entity) needed to know his place and let his ego get in the way too. Sorry, but Montrose and Can't Drive 55 isn't/wasn't enough to carry EVH's guitar case and regardless of his success with Van Halen, it was still Eddie's song writing and VH name that made most all of that happen. Not like Sammy was cranking out hit songs like Dreams and Why Can't This Be Love, songs Eddie composed on keyboard and guitar and quite frankly could have had a number of vocalists sing lyrics to if it wasn't Sammy.
More albums? Doubt it. Eddies drinking and whatever else he was into/going through at the time was the main reason for it ending. It had run it course and no matter how the relationship with Sammy was, I could tell by the last album, it was time to call it a day.

I have a story I don't tell often because its impossible to believe. In 1993 I am eating lunch at a diner in the small town in Indiana where I grew up . I was 20 yrs old ,and home from college at Purdue U to visit my parents . As my Dad and I are eating , 3 guys with long hair walk in and get seated a couple tables away. I immediately think I recognize one of them , but think there's no way in hell . As they order I listen closely and notice one has an English accent. So now I'm beside myself because all doubt is gone and I realize its Robert Plant. After a few minutes of hesitation I ask him what brings him to this place and he explains that he is on his way to Louisville having played a show in Cincinnati the previous night. They decided to drive because the distance is short and the countryside reminded him of his home . I then mention that my father's friend has a Bed and Breakfast nearby and that he and his friends might enjoy it ,as an alternative to a hotel in Louisville. After they finished eating they followed me and Dad to the B and B and decide its cool and check in . Next thing I know I'm sitting on the back patio overlooking the Ohio River having a Heineken with Robert Plant( plus a band member and another cat who I assume was his driver or some kind of assistant) I spent a couple hours there and we talked about Lonnie Mack and the Everly Bros , among other things. So ,I didn't live with a rock star like Craig did but I got to hang out with one !
