Pete and Rick. You both have done great videos about a plexi style amp going through a variac to give the amp that sag or spongy feel.
My question is, instead of using a variac, what if someone switches the voltage switch on the back to 220v???
If running here in Canada or the US, wouldn’t it have the same effect??
Keep up the AWESOME work guys!

List of the specs they mentioned, and some other things to consider:
    Amp:
Fat cap V2 (perhaps added by José)
Negative feedback resistor: 47k on 4 ohm tap (if I interpreted that one right), the resistor value is at the very least higher than normal, to decrease negative feedback "ruining" the signal.
    Mid pot 50k
Array of resistors between the primaries of the output transformer, although not mentioned in the video, there are rumors about this(will probably kill your amp)
    6ca7 tubes (same as 6550?)
Of course the variac (variable transformer) was used to lower the mains voltage going into the amp. The variac was set up to put out 90v instead of 120v, or 175-180v in Europe (with 230-240v mains). The bias was set to max, but max settings might vary from amp to amp. To bias your amp to Ed's specs, you'll have to get the amp running on 90v/175v/180v (mains), and set the bias to give each tube about 50mA of current. *Don't try running these samesettings on the normal voltage, cause you'll burn your tubes out with about 80mA each.*
The whole varia thing might not suit the 1987 circuit, since the tubes run on a lower voltage already (if I remember correctly).
In the old days Eddie also had an AC30 head as a backup amp, although it's not certain if he recorded anything with it, he is seen in the studio with it, holding his black and white Frankie (there's a picture on Equipboard, if you click on the Marshall 1959slp). There's a chance Ed used the power amp section of the Vox, while plugging his guitar into the Marshall pre amp. I am not sure if Eddie's Marshall had a FX loop, but since he used all of his pedals in front of the amp, this is very unlikely. Even though this scenario is unlikely, it could also explain some of the fizziness on the first album, the power section of a Vox AC30 tends to saturate a lot, even at low volumes.
Perhaps I'll be able to find more on EVH and slaving amps.
    Speakers
G12M Greenback 75Hz(?) I've read stuff about G12H's as well since they'd keep up better with the volumes.
There have also been some rumors circulating about the use of Blackbacks, supposedly he only started using those since the recordings of Fair Warning, but I'm not sure if that's the case. Blackbacks sound really good on a VH1 style tone as well.
JBL D120, almost certainly only on VH1, from VH2 and onwards these high frequencies were nowhere to be found in the guitar tracks.
(4 Blackbacks G12M 75hz speakers were used in this video)
    Guitar:
Frankie: Dimarzio Super Distortion or (probably) Mighty Mite 1300 pickup. Rewound PAF (Duncan Custom) was installed in '79 possibly.
Ibanez Super 70's in Ibanez Destroyer (shark guitar)
On VH! Eddie used a '57 vintage style Fender Stratocaster tremolo
On VH2 he might have used the Mighty Mite brass trem system (1133BR), (edit: Looking back on this: I read that Eddie used his "Charvel" Bumblebee a lot on the second album)
    Signal chain:
Boss GE-10 equalizer (quite rare), buffers the signal and drives the amp a bit.
The preamp/compressor on the Echoplex ep-3. Not sure if Pete mentioned this, but the preamp from the Echoplex unit drives the amp as well. I believe due to a design flaw, the dry signal from the guitar was boosted as well instead of only boosting the repeats. Very important to run the echo/delay unit in front of the amp.
    Strings:
9-40 Nickel strings (like the old days), perhaps the custom 9-40 set with the G-string being a 15
I'll definitely add some more to this comment, until then, fill me up on anything I missed.

I've put Super Distortions in two Alder-body strats and on both occasions it's transformed the attack on those guitars to something that immediately makes me think of the 1st VH album. There's a sizzle, and a tightness thing that happens on the low-e string that is recognisable to me.

Pete,,this was a real treat, and I got so immersed into this video "in search of eddie's early tones". I admire your playing, tenacity, and all around interest in this, as I was a big eddie fan. It seems you've basically nailed the tone to as close as it could ever be, and i thoroughly enjoyed watching this. I also learned something along the way. I bought a 5150 MXR pedal to add to my arsenal , and although it adds that Eddie flavor , it doesn't nail it like the tones you managed to squeeze out.
    Thanks a bunch

In an Interview I heard Eddy say he had a pretty simple set up in the early days . The guitar he used was made with what was referred to as "seconds" the stuff no one wanted and because he couldn't afford a good guitar in the beginning he built his own .. He had a habit of doing his own thing like putting humbuckers on a Stratocaster because he wanted a better sound . Les Paul actually loved chatting with Eddy as they sort of exchanged ideas .

Thanks so much for this video, Pete. I was a rock guitarist in LA in 1978, and before VH1 was released Ed was already a legend. He was so far ahead of the rest of us that we were always out of breath from trying to catch up with him. Then VH1 was released and we stopped chasing him ... it was futile. I was running a 100W plexi back then and experimented with a variac, but found the tone suffered from it and used a RAT pedal instead. What I did not realize until I saw your video is that Ed was biasing for 90VAC. Duh. In my own defense, I was 18 at the time and had no idea how to bias my amp. To me the most important part of Ed's sound was the effect it had on an audience. There were lots of tight, talented club bands in the 70s but when VH took the stage, it was an entirely different experience. That wall of sound and Ed's technical facility was arresting. You could not stop watching, listening or talking about it after the show. An amazing combination of talent, innovation and showmanship, from young men who probably had no idea how good they really were. Thanks again for this enlightening research and great playing. You sound like Ed did at the Whisky in '77.

The guy before him to really change guitar was Hendrix, but Hendrix died way too young to stay around and create a full picture of his talent, but Eddie was around long enough to let us all appreciate him for the crazy genius he was. I am glad I grew up when I did on this planet and had Van Halen as the soundtrack for my youth. I have had guitars for over 25 years, and I still suck at playing, but I still try to learn Van Halen riffs from time to time. I can kind of play Little Dreamer, and yesterday I learned Beautiful Girls. At least the riffs, I can't solo for shit. Thanks for the video Pete!

I gotta get a guitar with just one humbucker and a volume knob, love ittttttt. Edit: After watching this video again more carefully, what an amazing job you guys did. When I try to cover VH songs the natural spring reverb on my Fender amp doesn't cut it (plus I don't have a cranked Marshall Plexi with a Variac but not many people do). I wonder how often he used the phaser on the first album, especially with the solos, I feel like he kicked it on a lot, using a subtle sweep you don't really hear it as much because he is just tearing through those solos. Typically the more gain I dial in from the amp or pedals, the less reverb I use (directly from the amp), because it can get really muddy. So now I think I might want to try a reverb pedal with a few reverbs on it, not just for VH but other gainy tones where I might want more verb. I actually have a TSR-12 from Digitech made in the 90s, but my setup is pretty analog so I haven't tried it on my main rig in a while. Too bad for me that the Sunset Sounds is a download and not a pedal!

That version came later after eddie started using the floyd, The original Custom uses a ceramic magnet and eddie felt it was too brittle sounding with the floyd trem so he had seymour change the magnet to a alnico II in the Custom.
They(Custom and Custom-custom)are the same pickup only with different magnets. eddie was using the original Duncan Custom until he started installing floyds on his guitars.

First time I saw and heard you play was a Namm video with Ian Fletcher Thornley. Been a fan since. This was great. EVH was a tinkerer, and one hell of a innovator. Beside one of the greatest to strap a electric twanger around his body. You nailed it. That JBL just topped it with the cherry. Thanks Dave and Pete, for giving just do.

I’m 52 Pete, when I first bought my first Marshall, a hard northern Ash has always been my body of choice to deliver the Van Halen tone, but believe it or not, Maple bodies can deliver that tone too, look at George Lynch, he plays with “A brown sound” too.

@@herbcanter2114 Definitely. I would bet that Oak would sound the same as well. The harder, heavier would will give the best “bite” and “pick-edge” like EVH liked in the old days.

Ya - you pretty much nailed it, Pete. There might be a few other factors that would have a tiny impact (mastering, etc.), but this is as close as I've certainly ever heard it.
Though it's not really talked about a whole bunch, Blackmore had a LOT more influence on EVH than has probably ever been talked about. Certainly in "Light Up the Sky" - that's exactly what Blackmore was doing in "Burn". Ritchie used a ton of 2 string chords like that...
    Great video, dude!

    • @PeteThorn
      @PeteThorn  3 года назад +1

You’re 100% correct. Ritchie played very similar in “burn”. It’s not an easy riff to get the sound exactly right!

Nice work gents. Great stuff. It's funny my rig I keep going back to is my FJA Mod'd5150 that I run in a wet/dry/wet stereo config. My tone is very Van Halen ish but I've never gone for that specific brown sound. When Eddie passed, I've gone down the rabbit hole a bit. Always chasing that tone!

I just had a crazy cool idea. You sell or give out your DI sound and then we, the customers, use it to re-amp while testing out amps or modding or whatever. Maybe someone uses a good players signal to test out their amp eq or whatever. It’s hard to dial in an amp when the input, from player, sucks lol.

Pete, thank you for your deep dive here. I love the detailed actual comparisons through loops and bypass switches. Fantastic!
I have one unrelated question for you that I saw you do while changing the strings that I've never seen. I think you were changing strings on the gold guitar and after you replaced the strings, you unbolted the neck, folded the neck forward slightly then reattached the neck. I thought you might have swapped the original neck for another, but you had already connected the new strings to the head stock. Was this a technique of sorts for reason? Or didn't mean a thing worth mentioning?
Your matching of Eddie's playing was amazing to see. Jim from "quest for the brown sound" recommend your video.
Eddie lives through your video here and your playing. Long live the King!
    Rock on!

Chance to see something similar for early Iron Maiden tone, especially "Piece of mind" ? It is one of the best dark Marshall tones ever; other examples: Trouble - Psalm 9 and Barry Goudreau (from the band Boston) solo album from 1980.
