So tired of people dissing on DLR. He is who he is and in Van Halen, he was perfect for who they were. He kicked ass. They were fun and all bravado and he encapsulated that perfectly. You can play an instrument ALL your life and sound the same because it's the INSTRUMENT producing the actual sound. Your voice is your BODY and it changes over time for the majority of people, especially singers who yelp and howl. Give it a rest. Couch critics.
Agreed...Van Halen to me is based on all of the guys personalities combined. Van Halen wouldn't have been the same band without David Lee Roth. Just watching this interview, I can see how charged up David is about what Van Halen did as a band. I really feel that DLR is truly being genuine and positive about their experiences in the band...a lot of time has passed so enjoy the memories and leave the bad blood behind. We just lost Eddie Van Halen...isn't that bad enough?

Despite the harrowing ordeal of effects of chemo he'd been through, he was still managed to smile and able to post a picture together with a fan who asked. He was gentle soul. I think Eddie died peacefully.

I was lucky enough to see VH twice in high school back in 1981 and then again in 1982. When I look back all I can think of is I thought that this type of music would stay popular forever, the arenas were sold out !!! VH was the best !! I would have never guessed that bands like Van Halen would totally fade away and people would listen to the garbage that they do today.

Add these guys to the list of the hardest working bands of the 70's-90s. Bands like Rush, KISS, Van Halen, other working bands...they always talk about doing 5-6 day cycles around their various regions. 3-5 hour sets, lying about their ages to play clubs, playing the same songs, skipping school or work, etc. Then, they carried that work ethic into the next level, going on the road for months on end, driving in cars, vans, writing on the road, being flat fuckin' broke, trying to eat, sleeping on friends' couches, 200 shows a year, playing wherever they could (schools, parties). Then they make it. Support acts for 2-3 headliners. Schleppin' their own gear, paying 1-3 guys to roadie, playing another 200 dates a year, recording 2 studio albums a year as well, promotion, home life, etc. Finally, they headline. Still, 130-150 shows a year, an album every couple years, bigger budget but bigger responsibility. Stage shows, writing iconic material, keeping it up every night, staying healthy enough to do it... Christ, just those 3 bands, Rush, KISS, VAN HALEN. That's a century's worth of band schooling and knowledge. And they all did it because they wanted and NEEDED to do it. You can say anything you want about the individuals in each of those bands but they all had that work ethic as musicians that was iconic. Peace and love to Van Halen. Thank you Edward, for being a passionate person.
They had no free time in the beginning . They owed Warner a new album every year . That's why the Roth era albums were a little over a half hour each . Warner really screwed them along with other bands like Badfinger and even INXS . The lead singer of INXS committed suicide because he was broke .

These interviews are incredible. Every time I watch them, I smile and think about how much they fight, there was genuine love with Edward and Dave. Dave and Alex are like teenagers in their banter, but Dave and Edward? Genuinely brotherly love. I hope everyone eventually gets their shit together though. They need to do that tribute show for Edward.

You can tell that Ed is a bit stiff in the beginning because he was likely forced to do this, but then gets lost in the reminiscing and being the first one to recall one of their wild stories. I remember watching the movie The Founder, thinking about what Alex says at the very beginning of this clip. And it turns into the major plot point of the film. I was like, "Right on, Al!" LOL.
They're all interrupting each other. It's just how they are. Alex and Ed are strong personalities, if it bugged them they would say something. They've never been shy about shutting each other up.
The look on their faces at times. Ed and Al don't come from Dave's mold you can tell so when he's going into Dave mode but they all wind up eventually melding together and having good laughs here. Thats what made VanHalen so fucking great. Different ego's but the same fucking attitude and godamn did it ever show in their music. Van Fucking Halen
Love watching this. Eddie was just the coolest-really into the work and his playing. Dave is more settled, but needs to take his Ritalin. Alex reminds me of a cross between Jeff Goldblum and Damone from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But in a good way.
I still have my 1979 concert ticket in Ottawa Canada, Civic Centre, Dave was flying and jumping all over the place wearing what looked like long shag carpet covered boots that waved and flipped as he bounced around. Sound tech played Deep Purple Highway Star before the show.
It’s refreshing that Eddie was able to get Roth to be genuine once in a while.. Roth took a lot of heat but he never ran his mouth all time like or ran down other members in the band like Sammy. No one can say Dave is lazy. He had/has crazy work ethic. That always gets overlooked!!!! Everyone paints him in this corner or a crazy over the top drugged out rockstar, especially in his prime. True he lived the life somewhat but you couldn’t be a complete druggie or drunk and live the life he has, Even when he wasn’t working he was/is always doing something active. Look at all the hobbies and interest over the years.
When the substances weren't there, they actually managed to get over things enough to laugh like a few rockers just kicking back. I've never seen this. It's incredible to see them getting along.
This is so genuine and awesome to watch. The bond that these guys have from their start and path is so noticeable. At their height there was never and has never been since a more powerful, explosive, and energetic mix of extremely high level musicians. Dave was the perfect guy to lead this band from a front man / business sort of way. Total confidence. But listening to them reminisce is so much fun to to see.
All the work these guys did trust me fame isn't all bells and whistles Van Halen as well as all bands in past decades had no time at home tour, tour , albums beat your body like that eventually it takes its toll no wonder they needed drugs & alcohol! Lord Bless em .. With Eddie gone my life now has a huge void we have loss so many and when the rest leave we will be gone and I must say we had one hell of a ride! The best generation to have lived there will never be our generation again! The Best ! Blessings

Awesome video! I love hearing about the numbers. In Paul Stanley’s book he talks about how KISS didn’t make any money for quite a while, sounds like the same for Van Halen. And most other bands. But totally cool to hear about all of this. Plus, has anyone else noticed that doesn’t look like 2012? I met Eddie a year or two before this, and he had really short hair, and was pretty gray already. I have a picture of him and I right here. Anyway, maybe grown out, you don’t see the gray as much, like mine, ha ha. Just wondering if anybody else might have a more accurate date, possibly. Thanks! RIP Ed!!!🎸
Usually, an interviewer will use that technique as a way of getting the artist to explain things to an audience, thus getting a good interview. Dave knew everything but used this technique. He was smart here.
Not sure who in my family bought the Thriller album(cassette lmao), but my earliest memories of life are rewinding beat it over and over and over again on a portable casio tape player/am FM radio thingy...didnt have a clue who Eddie was....then I turned Five, And MTV and such.
These dude's put on the most unexpected amazing kick ass music i had ever seen they opened for Black Sabbath back in 1978 we went to see OZZY and shit our pants when they opened me and my buddy being from Cincinnati had never heard of them we thought we were going to be bored until Sabbath hit the stage boy were we in for a treat they opened with Running with the devil and to this day i remember it like yesterday they blew are friggin minds i did'nt even care if Black Sabbath ever played.........my god what a show !!

They're all interrupting each other. It's just how they are. Alex and Ed are strong personalities, if it bugged them they would say something. They've never been shy about shutting each other up.

The look on their faces at times. Ed and Al don't come from Dave's mold you can tell so when he's going into Dave mode but they all wind up eventually melding together and having good laughs here. Thats what made VanHalen so fucking great. Different ego's but the same fucking attitude and godamn did it ever show in their music. Van Fucking Halen

Love watching this. Eddie was just the coolest-really into the work and his playing. Dave is more settled, but needs to take his Ritalin. Alex reminds me of a cross between Jeff Goldblum and Damone from Fast Times at Ridgemont High. But in a good way.

I still have my 1979 concert ticket in Ottawa Canada, Civic Centre, Dave was flying and jumping all over the place wearing what looked like long shag carpet covered boots that waved and flipped as he bounced around. Sound tech played Deep Purple Highway Star before the show.

It’s refreshing that Eddie was able to get Roth to be genuine once in a while.. Roth took a lot of heat but he never ran his mouth all time like or ran down other members in the band like Sammy. No one can say Dave is lazy. He had/has crazy work ethic. That always gets overlooked!!!! Everyone paints him in this corner or a crazy over the top drugged out rockstar, especially in his prime. True he lived the life somewhat but you couldn’t be a complete druggie or drunk and live the life he has, Even when he wasn’t working he was/is always doing something active. Look at all the hobbies and interest over the years.

When the substances weren't there, they actually managed to get over things enough to laugh like a few rockers just kicking back. I've never seen this. It's incredible to see them getting along.

This is so genuine and awesome to watch. The bond that these guys have from their start and path is so noticeable. At their height there was never and has never been since a more powerful, explosive, and energetic mix of extremely high level musicians. Dave was the perfect guy to lead this band from a front man / business sort of way. Total confidence. But listening to them reminisce is so much fun to to see.
All the work these guys did trust me fame isn't all bells and whistles Van Halen as well as all bands in past decades had no time at home tour, tour , albums beat your body like that eventually it takes its toll no wonder they needed drugs & alcohol! Lord Bless em .. With Eddie gone my life now has a huge void we have loss so many and when the rest leave we will be gone and I must say we had one hell of a ride! The best generation to have lived there will never be our generation again! The Best ! Blessings

Awesome video! I love hearing about the numbers. In Paul Stanley’s book he talks about how KISS didn’t make any money for quite a while, sounds like the same for Van Halen. And most other bands. But totally cool to hear about all of this.
Plus, has anyone else noticed that doesn’t look like 2012? I met Eddie a year or two before this, and he had really short hair, and was pretty gray already. I have a picture of him and I right here. Anyway, maybe grown out, you don’t see the gray as much, like mine, ha ha. Just wondering if anybody else might have a more accurate date, possibly. Thanks! RIP Ed!!!🎸

Usually, an interviewer will use that technique as a way of getting the artist to explain things to an audience, thus getting a good interview.
Dave knew everything but used this technique. He was smart here.
Not sure who in my family bought the Thriller album(cassette lmao), but my earliest memories of life are rewinding beat it over and over and over again on a portable casio tape player/am FM radio thingy...didnt have a clue who Eddie was....then I turned Five, And MTV and such.

These dude's put on the most unexpected amazing kick ass music i had ever seen they opened for Black Sabbath back in 1978 we went to see OZZY and shit our pants when they opened me and my buddy being from Cincinnati had never heard of them we thought we were going to be bored until Sabbath hit the stage boy were we in for a treat they opened with Running with the devil and to this day i remember it like yesterday they blew are friggin minds i did'nt even care if Black Sabbath ever played.........my god what a show !!
