Wow. This is the cleanest, most real "Dave" interview I've ever seen. He is razor sharp, alert, articulate, and focused. Just... normal and badass. That is contrasted with the always slightly inebriated or stoned version of "Showman Dave" the world is used to seeing over the decades. Case in point, compare this great and revealing interview with the semi-silly way he behaved in his Joe Rogan interview many years later. There, he seemingly could not turn off the "showman" part of himself all throughout the interview, constantly doing silly voices, cracking grandpa jokes (and repeating them in the same interview), and constantly laughing (weirdly). And all while, Joe was trying to ask him very serious, deep and personal questions and extract some semblance of meaning for his very unusual choice to sub as an EMT during several summers. I suspect Dave acts that way as a form of false bravado whenever feels nervous, cornered, or vulnerable. In this interview, Howard (also a long time media personality and great interviewer) made Dave feel relaxed. He had lots to say and was very direct and candid. In the Joe Rogan interview (granted, many years later where nostalgia and diminished fame can do weird things to one's psyche) he may have been nervous and acting silly was his way of coping. That's my guess. Or, he was on something to "enhance his mood". You decide.

DLR is a smart man, intellect way beyond a normal person has. Maybe he's a little too smart sometimes. I always thought Sammy was the more egotistical one. Dave's ego is played up for the public because that's his persona, it's funny. He's made comments many times referring to rock n' roll as professional wrestling. Deep down he's a very kind, introverted and humble guy. The average fan doesn't understand that.
Fuck, I gotta tell ya ---- thank God that Dave gives these in-depth interviews about the inner conflicts in Van Halen --- because Dave doesnt spin the facts, he just tells it like it is ---- when you listen to Eddie and Alex it's just a bunch of horseshit to make them look like the good guys --- but ask yourself this --- if Ed and Al are so wonderful --- why have they fired Dave TWICE and fired Sammy TWICE and fired Cherone ---- who's the real assholes in Van Halen now, huh?
Ben Rogers Dave and Ed personality wise are oil and water. Ed fired Sammy cuz he was an alcoholic wasteoid at the time. Alex is Ed’s right hand man no matter Ed does. My opinion? Ed, Alex, and Dave are all really fucked up people who for some bizarre cosmic reason when they get in a room together to jam, magic happens and they all know it.
Sammy was not fired twice. He was done on his own during the 2004 Reunion Tour. He wanted to quit during the tour. And when was Dave fired twice? 1985 he was either fired/quit, and the next time was when? Yes, the VH brothers (mostly EVH) are difficult, no doubt. They couldn't get along with Roth, Sammy, Michael, but Cherone left on fairly good terms. Not saying you're wrong about those two, but get the facts right. Hopefully this helps.
Another moron . In the VH3 promotion issue of THE INSIDE MAGAZINE Alex Eddie AND Mike all said Scammy Hagar quit . There was no conspiracy to get rid of Captain Candyass . Warner Bros DEMANDED a greatest hits album THEY DIDN'T ASK . Hagar didn't want to make it . He was given the option do it or quit . Even in the individual interview with Mike the interviewer told Mike they were personally told by Captain Candyass Hagar told them he didn't want to do the greatest hits album . And then he put that with OTHER LIES in his POS book RED .
His mind is just racing so hard and he is barely catching up. But he makes it somehow although lots of people just think he doesnt make sense. If you listen carefully - he makes perfect sense.
I don't personally know David Lee Roth or Sammy Hagar.... I have seen them both in numerous interviews on tv, they are both highly intelligent men.... Eddie Van Halen and band made great decisions to form a union with both of these men.... Everybody made money, people like me enjoy their music still today..... Thank you to all of these talented people who gave us years of awesome music and songs which stick to our souls....

Dave is the personalization of being so smart he’s encroaching on crazy. Love the guy
His mind is just racing so hard and he is barely catching up. But he makes it somehow although lots of people just think he doesnt make sense. If you listen carefully - he makes perfect sense.
Diamond Dave was on point throughout..
Dave always gives an amazing interview.
He should never have left Van Halen. But he did
He was fired for not being able to sing properly
Roger Seebald No he wasn’t. He was the leader of that band...look it all up.
They didn't want to play "California Girls." So he had to do it solo..
All i’m asking for is one more Van Halen album with DLR on vocals!!!!
7:40 - 7:56 What a meaningful wonderful comment Dawid, Shalom to you!
03:10 - Gotta (also) love him for his confidence!! 👍
Dave is a good guy. He just talks a lot.
sczrz he's extremely intelligent and seems kind too
LoL
Come on, he's clearly a complete narcissist and treated the other guys in the band like he was their superior. Just because you can come across well in an interview means shit, narcissists always know how to charm others when they want to.
@@zootsoot2006 big RIP to eddie, but you just described evh
DLR has the gift of gab and comes across as very likable here.
When Howard ruled 💯 David Lee Roth 🎤🤘🤘🤘🤘 wow 1996 the good old days 💯💯💯
Great man Dave
He knew his worth
Didn't go nuts with drugs Eddie did
Once again Howard playing both sides. One when he interviews Roth another when he interviews Hagar.
David Lee Roth is my favorite front man. He is not the best singer but how entertaining he is!
Very impressive Huck Finn reference.
Roth with the Zappa reference. "Telefunken u47..."
I noticed
yup
God Bless him.
I love him!!
Very cool 😎
DLR is a very entertaining, matter of fact person with a great sense of humor. It seems nothing fazes him. And a classic air sign.
David Lee Roth manages to awoid all of howard's mines. Incredible how he appears not to be bothered about anything. He is the Zen Master how he manages to turn any negative comment into something positive.
Van Halen doesn't need Hagar...and Hagar certainly doesn't need them...The brothers and Dave? Well...I think that they really DO need each other.Neither of them are the same without the other.
Now,if the brothers would only call Mikey and fucking apologize!
I love david.hes fun.the rest of van halen was too serious
dave is and will always be the lead singer of van halen period
BS.
Sammy's way better singer Has a way more Success with them can play guitar really well Obviously you can't Distinguish talent.
