Someone once asked Jimi Hendrix what it was like to be the greatest guitar player in the world. Jimi responded "I don't know, go ask Roy Clark." If you want to see some serious artistry on a guitar, Roy Clark is the man. "If it had strings, Roy could make it sing"

I've heard a dozen different versions of that quote, of one great guitarist being asked how it feels to be the greatest guitarist, and naming another one. The first version I heard was someone asking Eddie, and his reply was, "I don't know, go ask Phil Keaggy."
But yeah, Roy Clark could MURDER anything with strings. Guitar, banjo. mandolin, fiddle - hell, give the man a sitar and he'd probably melt your face with it after about five minutes.

If this was the show recorded at New Haven the last day of the tour I was actually at this concert. Epic night. Me and my buddies went to a diner before the show and started talking to the waitress. She and her gf's met up with us after the concert at some hole in the wall bar/rock club across the street from Yale University where they only sold light beer. :( . Sammy Hagar stole the show when he almost fell off the rafters high above the stage. He was standing on this walkway about 75 feet up and he decided to grab a bar at the end of the walkway over his head and swing on it. Well, the last swing his feet hit the bar below and he dam near came tumbling down. This is the second time I saw Van Halen. The first was on 14th street at the peladium in Manhatten in 78 or 79 for the first album. I am sure they played eruption then too but we were too high for me to remember. LOL.

Surprisingly this isn't pre-recorded. There are a couple mistakes here and there where he falls off a bit compared to the studio, and he added stuff in for the crowd at points .... But you have to intentionally search for it because it's barely there. Pretty much the hardest solo ever played, and he can recreate it on stage with complete minimal variation. 🤯

We'd truly get pissed if we didn't hear at least one solo, guitar or drums, it didn't matter. By watching your reaction to this, I think you probably understand now why those of us who experienced this "epicness" when it was new, can find very little talent in today's "music"! Yeah, Eddie's impressive. Even in the 70's, when guitar legends abounded, their first album dropped a bomb in the anthill. He's one of those guitarists you know right away, his style is so distinctive. And yeah, his thing has always been really fast playing. Another mark of his playing is how he likes to split chords into triplets - he's like Mozart that way.

Not only is it very fast, but it's *very clear*. A lot of people play fast and much of the time it sounds like mush. When Eddie does it, it sounds like classical music. Eruption in particular sounds like the toccata part of Toccata and Fugue in D Minor by Bach.

Bob, guitarists in the 70's were hardly "dying on the vine" as you say. I recall it being intensely rich with Southern rock guitarists in particular, plus a genuinely strong mix of nationwide players both new and old, and hardly any of them dedicated to copying Jimi Hendrix. And it might have been a slip coming from a too quick reaction, but Van Halen isn't a guitarist, it's a band.

It may be a cliche to some folks, but cliches becomes cliches because they're true: Jimi Hendrix is that best guitar player and no one will come close, much less surpass him. Some people say Jimi said Gibbon was "the best". People who like Terry Kath say that Jimi said he was the greatest guitarist. In both cases, Jimi was being polite. Kath is probably the best of the two. But it's NOT about who is the fastest player; it's about who elicits the most EMOTION out of the instrument...and that is Jimi, by miles and light years. Eddie is good, others are good. Jimi has the only perpetual lease.
