Edward Van Halen is a virtuoso. They invented a method of writing music just so they could put Edward's music on paper. It's called guitar tablature. This man was not only playing the guitar; he was writing history.
No guitarist in the history of music shocked the audiences like EVH. No one. His skill and mastery of that instrument is one and done. No one will make that big of impact again not before him or after.
No one will ever compare to Eddie Van Halen. When they talk about Rock music in 100 years, they will be talking about EVH. They will watch this video, they will hear this tone unknown.....and then they will understand. I'm thankful I was here at the same time he was for over 40 years.
@@reallymysterious4520 of course Jimi did..no brainer but not to the same shock level as EVH. Eddie's skill level compared to the rest of the guitar players out there when he came out was 40-50 years ahead of their time. He not only played guitars, he built guitars. I cried when he passed. There will never be another like him. He was a unicorn. I will miss him until the day I die. I miss you Mr. Van Halen. God bless you.
Makes me sound cold but I never cried when my dad and stepdad died, but I cried when Eddie died. Dunno why - I can’t explain the above, it’s just the way it happened.
Keith Urban's reaction to the news of E.V.H.'s passing: "This hit me hard. There are lots of great guitar players, but very VERY few true innovators, players that seem to have arrived from a far distant planet, and bring a completely new color to the rainbow."
It does make me sad and tear up a little to think this musical genius is gone. No words can describe the impact this man had on rock and roll and future guitar players. Simply amazing. Miss you Eddie RIP
There are millions of good guitar players; there are thousands of great guitar players; there are hundreds of phenomenal guitar players; there are dozens of amazing guitar players; but there is only one Edward Van Halen. That man was a god among men. Often imitated, but never duplicated.
Saw VH live twice. Once in '84 with Diamond Dave and again in 88' with Sammy. Eddie was something special. An innovator of both the guitar and the way it was played. What I'll always remember about EVH, aside from the music he gave us, is the sly grin he always had on stage. You could tell he was doing what he loved. EVH shares the GOAT slot with SRV in my opinion. Two different styles, each a master of his own.
I got to see VH twice as well. Unfortunately I missed DLR. I saw Sammy in 1995 and I saw Gary for the VH3 tour. Both were great shows. VH3 album is very underrated. EVH was great at both shows
I write this with a Frankenstrat in my lap. I first saw Van Halen at the Cow Place in Daily City in 1984, then again in 86 with Sammy, then 88, then 89 for Monsters of Rock at Candlestick (with Metallica, Dokken, and the Scorpions). I saw VH with Gary Cherone in 94. Then Sammy reunion tour, and then the Dave reunion tour. Eddie Van Halen is my favorite guitar player in the world. I literally miss him every day. RIP Eddie, you will always be the best in my heart!
Some guitar players that say Edward was the best they had ever heard or seen are Steve Lukather who himself is an unbelievable talent / session musician. Knows a thing or two about guitar. Ted Nugent great player himself, Niel Schon, Billy Corgan, Sammy, Hammett, Zak Wild, and on and on...these guys know the guitar inside and out and they believe Edward was the best that's ever been...no doubt. I know alot of people default and say Jimi but if you really look at the two players (and they both deserve to be the two at Mt Rushmore of playing) Edward is far more talented than Jimi...so much more fluid and versatile as well as technically far superior....I live them both but give me Jimi's best 7 min live playing compared to Edward's best 7 min live playing and there is absolutely no comparison.
Eddie was trained in classical music. Hence the part of the video where it goes blue and he makes the guitar sound like a violin and a cello. He started on the drums and his brother Alex on the guitar. They switched and the rest is history. You just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. Period! RIP Eddie ❤
You will love the debut album. It's total fire. Eddie is my #1. Sorely missed, but Van Halen is a treasure trove of his greatness, as well as the whole band.
This is Eddie's nightly solo while playing on tour, that changed every time. Parts of "Eruption" are in the solo, but the real version is on the first album. Please listen to "Beautiful Girls" off the 2nd album, thx.
It's one thing to train and be good enough to play any of this....it's a whole different thing for all of this to come out of thin air in your mind, total imagination, and then be able to bring it into existence with your fingers.
Eddie was the best. He reinvented the electric guitar. How it’s played, how it’s built, how it sound, how it looked, etc. etc. etc. There will never be another Eddie Van Halen. He’s seriously up there with Mozart or Beethoven. They will be talking about him for years to come.
Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
His son Wolfgang Van Halen has a band, called Mammoth you should check them out, he is the singer, and a great guitarist in his own right. Seen them live last year, opening for Guns N Roses.
He’s the man that’s for sure nobody can do what he just did. I’ve seen him live four times and each time I’m amazed and walked away with a goosebumps and a smile from ear to ear and a Stank face lol
VH was a huge part of many of our youth in the late 70's, but mainly in the early 80's while Dave was in the band. It's refreshing to see the appreciation of the next generations still enjoying listening to and admiring Eddie and his incredible talent! And thank you for not pausing constantly throughout the video, but enjoy it until the end!
Yes, please review their first album, Van Halen!! The original Eruption is on there. The first song of their first album, Runnin with the Devil, is epic, the whole album is fantastic and changed rock
In 1978, two albums came out that changed the music scene forever. Hi Infidelity, REO Speedwagon...and Van Halen. Rock music wasn't as hard...Eagles, Pink Floyd, Skynyrd...the harder stuff was seen as Ted Nugent and Rush. Nugent went into an interview about a festival being put on in Texas, and Van Halen was a new act on the bill....he said the entire backstage area nearly had a heart attack when he started Runnin With the Devil and by the time he got around to Eruption, they were ALL watching him. VH essentially put the entire disco genre six feet under. I think if he hadn't died so young in 1982, Randy Rhodes would be the real king on guitar, even though his love was classical.
Eddie Van Halen was the Ultimate Guitar Hero !! keep those Van Halen reactions coming !! You should do a Van Halen Marathon !, review Van Halen album for sure as it is awesome from start to finish !!!
Get ready to be blown away. Also, Somebody Get me a doctor. If Mozart was alive now, he would be bowing down to Eddie Van Halen. I bust out in tears every time I see the genius at work. I bow down to this man. R.I.P. Rock God. I have not been able to think of anything that can top this.
Agree Completely. Eddie WAS Van Halen. Replace anyone else, its still Van Halen. Replace Eddie, we wait for Eddie to reappear with the new Van Halen. At least we have large selection of killer video and audio to keep EVH's spirit with us. Turn it Up & Rock On.
While I agree David was not a vocalist--he is a performer. Sammy was the voice during his tenure, Eddie and Michael were the "Van Halen" sound continuity.
As much as I disliked Diamond Dave some of his lyrics were absolutely sweet. "Blue eyed murder in a size five dress". Heh. Rare is it where a few words are worth more than a picture.
YES!!!! YES!!! YES!!!! Oh I have been patiently waiting for some VH!!!! I swear I almost said something last night during the Live Show!!!! YES!!! Eddie Van Halen (RIP 😔) IS THAT GUY!!!! Eddie Van Halen was a genius. My favorite band and guitarist ever. Was blessed to be able to see Van Halen 3 times. Each show was great. A man that would show audiences each night that he truly loved playing the guitar. The joy that you see on his face speaks volumes. Having him pass was heartbreaking. I pray that Wolf, Alex, Valerie and Janie have the love and support they need. R.I.P. Eddie
The first time I heard Van Halen on the radio I was with a couple of buddies. The DJ says something like "You aren't going to believe this guy Eddie Van Halen". He spun Eruption followed by You really got me. We sat there stunned. One of my buddies said "That guy is from another planet"! I said "Or he's from another dimension!"
This show was August 27th 1986 New Haven Coliseum In New Haven Connecticut I was there it was amazing performance and epic! So loud in that place it was so awesome loved it! I had great seats close to where Eddie was shredding!
I saw VH in the 80's when I was a young teen, yes I snuck out without my Dad knowing. I took my son to see VH so he could hear EVH when we were stationed in Hawaii in the 90's and he was 12. It was his first concert.
When learning guitar (after Stevie Ray,, Angus and Malcolm Young, Gary Moore, Jimmy Page, the Beatles, and Eddie made me get one) There were lots of times I thought, "I will never be able to........like this or that person" Then there was a moment after a year, that I had an epiphany. Then another a few months later. I kept getting to new plateaus and then getting stuck. The next plateau is right there in front of you and they do come. Patience and practice enable you to have the guitar become and extension of you. Just like every carpenter smacked their thumb with a hammer dozens of times before they get it right, everything comes with muscle memory and soul.
ALl those hammer ons, and hammer offs were from scales. This is basically Eddie just jammin. This is loosely based on the recording from 78. This video was about 10 years later.
You would not believe how many times during this number that Eddie said in his head "Damn, I screwed the pooch on that one" there were several minute flaws here, but style and swagger can make every note, the right note.
This was after 8 years of touring and playing Eruption every night so it's really evolved into something out of this world! Review the original version and put yourself in that time period if you can then you'll see how powerful that solo/song was back then!
Your giving the first impression look that I did when I first heard this back in the 80's. I had to listen to it over and over and question if it was just a guitar or not. RIP Eddie.
I demand you watch the entire Live Without a Net concert!....I was there the second night in 1986....They were just getting to their peak....great show....they brought you emotional on stage with them to party and just have a good time....Peace!
I'll never forget the night my mates and I saw Van Halen in Oakland CA, at the Henry J. Kaiser Auditorium on the Van Halen II tour. This cat sitting in front of us turned to me and said, "this is America's answer to Led Zeppelin." I never forgot that. In '78 they were the heaviest act in the business...
Congratulations you have met the king Eddie Van Halen there will never be another go back to the early years starting in 78 watch all the videos and listen to music and you will understand
In case you missed it - that little "x" in the upper right-hand corner of those pop-up adds close them so you can see what is happening. Also if you want a Ad and Commercial free experience try Opera GX browser. Been using it a year, love it.
That part near the end when he's doing the insane double handed tapping can from Fair Warning. He was trying to emulate funk bass playing. As usual, It came out sounding like him
Funny Eddie story. In 82, when famed producer (and performer) Quincy Jones tried to call Eddie to do the solo for Jackson's "Beat It", he called Eddie while he was playing in his studio and Ed thought it was a prank call and replied to the caller (Quincy), "Stop calling, you fucking asshole!" Then he finally got the call where Quincy said, "It's Quincy Jones!" and Eddie goes, "Uuuugh, I'm SORRY!" He said he felt like an idiot. He later did the solo and helped rearrange the song for no charge or royalties. Quincy later said in an interview that Ed was a sweetheart and a brilliant musician to work with in the studio. Heavy rock wasn't QJ's usual domain. After it was over, Quincy mailed Eddie a thank you note signed, "Quincy Jones (The Fucking Asshole)" haha. Eddie claimed in an interview that he framed it. Funny zinger by QJ.
Nice reaction. Amazingly Eddie's greatness didn't just lie in his guitar playing but also in his mastership over the instrument itself. By this I mean the guy worked on redoing the electric guitar until it sounded the way he wanted it too. Including creating the unique sound of Eddie's "Brown Tone". All part of way when other guitarist tried to do what he did. They had a hard time doing it. Their guitars equipment just wasn't what he was working with. Some would say he was cheating. lol Few others could ever match both the playing skills and the Frankenstein mad genius mind Eddie had when it came to the guitar itself. He's really unmatched in this feat. When Eddie hit the world, some just stopped and stared, Others put their guitar down and walked away in shame. And yet others picked up the guitar inspired to try to do more. Eddie changed the music world. He also did the guitar solo in Michael Jacksons Beat it. Moreover, he did some rearranging of the song as well. Making Eddie on the number one song in the US and the number two song in the US at the same time. His influence will last for a long time to come. That impact is what makes Eddie the greatest of all time.
Definitely do the album. I was in high school when it came out and it changed every damn thing. Listen to it all the way through. I look forward to seeing your reaction
I just asked my 23 year old daughter who was the greatest guitarist she knew of and she said Eddie Van Halen. That's my girl.
my 8 year old son says the same ;-)

Your giving the first impression look that I did when I first heard this back in the 80's. I had to listen to it over and over and question if it was just a guitar or not. RIP Eddie.
I'm a sucker for reactions to this video!!! Well Done, sir!
I demand you watch the entire Live Without a Net concert!....I was there the second night in 1986....They were just getting to their peak....great show....they brought you emotional on stage with them to party and just have a good time....Peace!
You young man are seeing the GOAT at work!!

The master!! RIP Eddie💙🎶🎸🎶🎸
Like Jimi, Eddie changed the way guitar would be played forever and influenced so many others. He was certainly blessed with this talent!!
I was at that concert in Des Moines, IA, it was awesome, BTO was the opener.
That part near the end when he's doing the insane double handed tapping can from Fair Warning. He was trying to emulate funk bass playing. As usual, It came out sounding like him
The best there is the best there was the best ever will be Eddie Van Halen
Goat ! Point blank period
Eddie is GOD°° May he R.I.P.. There will never be another like him. Humble Hero. Gone to soon😢
Can't wait for the =VH= debut reaction. Bring it on!
Eddie didn’t learn guitar, the guitar learned Eddie.
Yes he is real!
Also the guitarists on "Beat It" by Michael Jackson. True legend. The band was named after him! Rip
Eddie was my favorite student when I was teaching guitar.
I grew up to VH
Another great guitar riff with dual guitar playing is hotel California from the Eagles.
RIP Eddie. The Best in the World of Music.
Dude, love the "are you kidding me" look on your face.
Hes amazing
Check out "Hear about it later". A very underrated song, but he does amazing guitar work on this song.
My mind is always blown right around the 10-minute mark (in this video) when it sounds exactly like a violin.
Definitely do the album. I was in high school when it came out and it changed every damn thing. Listen to it all the way through. I look forward to seeing your reaction
"Master at work." That says it all.
