Indeed! A lot of people equate emotional playing to producing sad stuff that makes you cry. Thereby overlooking the fact that JOY is also an emotion.
EVH to me is a very emotional guitarist, because he is able to bring so much joy with his unique, instantly recognisable style of playing.

Your commentary made me tear up ...... I knew I was hearing the gods speak in ‘ 78 when I listened to Van Halen One. I was a teenage girl trying to survive a very dysfunctional family. Thank You Edward Van Halen for the soundtrack of my youth . Seeing you 3rd row in Detroit in 81’ is a memory I will cherish. 💜

No one had the guitar solo down as good as Eddie. He layed the tracks for a large majority of guitar players today. A true guitar god.

EVH is my favorite guitarist of all time! He was also one of the first musicians to create amps the way he wanted them to sound as well as his guitars. He has always been hands on not just slapping his name on something. I’m fortunate to have friends in the music industry who know this from personal connections to him. I really enjoyed your analysis! It was spot on! Can’t wait for part 2! 🤘🏼♥️

I think Tom Scholz was the actual first to do that with the amps. He was the guitarist who created the band Boston. Eddie changed rock guitar forever with his technique and sound 2 years later. The fact that he made his amazing Frankenstat (which I have a copy of) for less than $250 is just stunning! I priced the same types of parts because I was going to make one (before I bought one) and it came out even cheaper!
Any concert on youtube you think captures their best performance? Kind of like Ritz for GnR ... :) I haven't listened much to them and maybe it's time.. =)
@Sleepydog - Well, I would correct that with any of the 'professionally edited' concerts on RUclips (and elsewhere) are a bit dodgy. The album 'Frampton Comes Alive' and the album 'KISS Alive!' were extremely monkeyed-with where things were re-recorded in the studio and the crowd volume was altered - and sometimes added where there was none. Believe me, I've seen Eddie mess up plenty of times live! There's actually a concert that was professionally shot on the Fair Warning tour on RUclips. At the beginning of Unchained, Eddie comes in too early with the guitar part where Dave starts singing. So, he goes back to the intro with a grin on his face - knowing he screwed up. ;-)

When I need a break from everything I just find Ed and he takes me to a special place.
When I was a young boy I visited an older friend's house one night and he put on this new album. It was Van Halen and when I heard Eddie and I was wondering what instrument he was playing. It was such a new, unique sound I didn't even know it was a guitar! You had to live in that era to understand how far ahead of his time EVH was. That night was the first time I realized I wanted to play guitar...
I appreciate your observations on physiology and how players have to find what works best for them. I've found as I've grown older that I've also had to adjust for things like joint and tendon pain, and realized that you may have to change the way you've played for years and find different fingerings, chord voicings, etc. in order to play things in ways that are less painful or stressful to your fingers and hands.

That is a wonderful observation mutt3155. It's just a reality, facts may be difficult to accept, but they are still facts. I screwed up hard, musically speaking, I let life get in the way since the only guitar I had was absolute trash. I'm still gonna surround myself with so much fairly high end stuff, just in case my fingers magically get it some day. I owe those fingers that much!

Hi there...I hope you don't mind me replying to your message. I don't know what your problems are but I have been playing professionally for years and a year and a half ago I got a pain in my left hand which radiated to my elbow. I also lost some strength and flexibility. I tried everything and finally went to a good physiotherapist who told me I had problems with nerve getting trapped. I had acupuncture. She also gave me exercises - which I have to keep up - and it took about four months for things to improve. I am now back to playing properly but it was a long and worrying road. I guess I'm just trying to say, search out all avenues of treatment...good luck...

Eddie did not have tutorials on RUclips, in the Seventies. That makes Eddie even more impressive because he had to teach himself. And being self-taught contributes to his uniqueness, since no teacher was there to impose a certain style. So, in the absence of formal instruction; Eddie contrived his own style.
I agree with your point about posture. A player can strain (sprain) muscles in their little finger and cause their wrist to hurt, if they push themselves beyond what their body allows them to do.
Anybody who has been classically trained has had it beaten into their heads, not to anchor their little finger on the soundboard. So, like yourself; I always notice whether a player is doing that, too.
Eddie is the best there ever was. He looked like a rock star, moved like a rock star, was the most original, influential guitar player to ever play the instrument and he did it with pure joy. He might be an asshole in real life, but ain't we all. Eddie was the Leonardo Da' Vinci of guitar, no doubt about it.

My brother saw him in 1979 in Seattle. He is a musician and was off to the side of the stage and just watched Eddies technique. He said Eddies fingers just hovered over the top of the strings and he had No Wasted motions to his playing. It blows us all away in 79, as it does today. Simply amazing player.

Eddies fingers danced on the fret board like a ballerina dances on a stage. Everything is light to the touch and graceful. So sad to lose a legend like EVH. Rip Eddie 😢😢😢
What sets him apart here, as in almost all of his soloing, is his composition. Sure, he has almost inconceivable technique and facility, but that stuff bores quickly. He’s always composing in his solos, dreaming up a theme, a direction forward that is truly and uniquely his. He’s that special exception, a lesson to all the lesser shredders that speed and technique alone will last you just a few seconds, if that, before nobody cares anymore.

You analysed a legend yesterday and then just followed it up with another legend. I know a lot of people will reference Randy Rhoads but of all these type of 80s rock guitarists, Eddie is the most influential and the best IMO. He is just so badass and unique.

When I was a teenager. Aerosmith was going to play at our county fair. At that time, Joe Perry wasn’t with them. He was doing the Joe Perry Project. A garage band was opening for them. They were called Van Halen! They ROCKED!! They made HISTORY that night!! Aerosmith sucked pretty bad. Steven Tyler was so drunk/high, he could remember the lyrics to his songs. He fell a couple times. It was sad. Everyone was screaming for Van Halen to come back on stage!
This is a gem of a story -- what a memory! Who would have thought the level of musical history on that county fair stage!

As a beginner at the guitar I have looked at numerous beginning guitar courses, numerous. I was so happy to have you point out and talk about adjusting form or as you said adapt your technique to fit what your are trying to play. THANK YOU!!! I have wondered this since I started and you are the first to confirm the need to adjust instead of getting frustrated.
I had the privilege of watching Eddie set up a guitar himself and just his knowledge of a guitar is incredible!! The guy will never get his due as far as how a guitar should be set up and built! Complete genius!!! Eddie himself told Floyd Rose how to build a tremolo bar with fine tuners that would be better than a tremolo bar from Fender!!

I was just starting High School on Van Halen came out and I can tell you every single guitar player I knew was dying to see him play so they could learn how to do what it was he was doing it was mind-boggling amazing guitarist we're just flabbergasted

JoJo C i had the pleasure of seeing Van Halen and journey in ruby diamond auditorium in Tallahassee along about 77 or 78, it was the last of their small auditorium show’s! My friend Danny and I got back behind the amps at one point so we could drink some whiskey and missed a free for all! Miss you Danny RIP
I was in 11th grade when their debut album came out. As soon as I heard Running With the Devil I had to have the album. Purchased it along with Aja by Steely Dan and Worlds Away by Pablo Cruise. Still love all three!

@William Harvey I learned a lot of tricks by watching.. I'm an amateur by comparison, but have learnt cool riffs and sound by watching both in front row and videos of concerts.
If I remember correctly, it was something Eddie did prior to his fame, and was done at small venues... which totally makes sense..

damn long fingers but thick bones, too. His hammer ons and pulloffs were just so percussive. It gave the notes that sound they have when struck hard. Lots of his tone WAS the way he played but some of it was the guitar and amp setup. What can one say? 1978 I heard side 1 in headphones just before bed. I was laying in bed trying to go to sleep cuz I'm sure the next day was a school day and I was in my mid teens. Jaw stayed open for about 20 minutes. It's one thing to hear KISS guitars that sounded loud as heck, and Nugent guitar that sounded loud and amazing with that crazy feedback/sustain, and Boston's buzz saw tone and melodic harmonies. Then VH 1. ! No good way to describe the difference and the amazement upon hearing it for the very first time in full fidelity in headphones at age 15. You couldn't have prepared for it. I probably didn't get much sleep that night. I was DEFINITELY buying that album and I spent a chunk of my waking hours trying to learn most everything off the first 2 albums. As far as rock guitar goes, I put Eddie in the top 10. Overall, all things considered. nice vid!

This video was originally posted 3 years ago. This analysis could have just as easily been done in the ‘70s or in 2023. Eddie Van Halen was just a master and monster on that guitar. EVH is timeless and in a class all to himself. RIP Ed. VH was in my wheelhouse since I was 10. He was a heavy influence on my taking up guitar. Hit me hard to hear of his passing.
I won VH1 on the boardwalk in Seaside Heights, NJ in 78 on 8 track. Popped it in my portable player and was absolutely amazed at what I was hearing as were the people that stopped to listen. Made me a fan for life.

I don't even play the guitar but recently another RUclipsr was talking about Rap and Rock and said how certain rappers with insane cadences are like all time great guitarists with their craft.
He named Van Halen as the technical and soul equivalent to what EMINEEM is in Rap, so that got me greatly interested and I have been in a fucking wormhole ever since

This is why I love getting the UK insight. Here in the states, we may never have thought of saying "Eddie's Imagination with the guitar".... but that is the perfect way of explaining it. I like your channel. I'm going to subscribe. As a guitarist in a local band, I love hearing about other people's (guitarists) experiences and thought processes. Plus, I have this thing about the British dialect that seems to bring to light a clearer thought process to me because I'm really bad at expressing things with words. Fil, I was in high school in 1978, I can still remember where I was when I first heard eruption. Remember disco was dead and we were looking forwards, Eddie was so different from everyone else. The best VH ever was when Sammy was singing.

When Eddie exploded onto the scene, everyone focused on and copied Eddie's incredible tapping technique. But Eddie is so much more than that - beautiful phrasing, incredible musicianship, the tastiest blues licks on the planet, composer, genius inventor, luthier, the list goes on and on. Truly, one of the greatest that ever lived.

Yes, he did. He said he ruined a lot of guitars trying to put together the guitar he finally ended up with. There’s a wonderful interview with him where he goes into detail about it.
The devil showed up in Pasadena and EVH kicked his ass back to hell. Something I could never do “lead”. I’m strictly rhythm, can’t make it cry or sing. But I’m okay with that, I just watch in amazement.

Eddie Van Halen changed things. His stamp on rock'n'roll is irrevocable and absolute. People who are dismissive of him remind me of that scene from "Amadeus" where Mozart is being told that the problem with his music is there are too many notes.

You represent the crowd that followed Van Halen Angelo. I would even go so far as to say they weren't that musically inclined, but opted for a almost juvenile form of rock. The faster and louder the better. Van Halens legacy lived on in METAL only. Hendrix lived on in every facet of creative music in contemporary arts the world over. Eddie was a great GUITARIST, but as a pure musician he fell far short. You still hear both legacies being born out today. One in the teenage realm and the other in adult music. Which one belongs where?

EVH is King! Why I love him so much is his sense of musicality, if that's a word. He's not just flopping around on the fretboard, his solos are musical odysseys. Every note is an answer to the one before, even the squeels and squaks. Even though there are players out there with great technique and ability, I to this day haven't heard anyone who touches EVH. Long live the King!! Thanks, as always Fil!

Yes! It's one of the best examples to show that you don't need a guitar that is more expensive than your car to sound awesome.
To the contrary, there are probably loads of people who bought very expensive gear to sound like EVH. 😁
This is not the Frankenstrat. This is a Kramer "5150", although it is painted in the classic red, white and black stripes. The Franky had a Fender neck and headstock and Eddies Kramers have the bannana headstock.
@@Axess-sv8nq Cool, is it a Franky replica or the 5150 replica. There are some really amazing one out there made by hobbyests, not big companies like Fender etc, although you can buy brand name from EVH. They just released 5150 type guitars.
@Leon Mohan - Yeah. It's a Franky that someone made. Found it at an antique shop! I have no idea who made it or what pickup is in it. The sound is awesome from it! Just about exact! I've made videos with it on my channel using different presets I've made on various amp sims. The 5150 that Eddie's using in this video is the Kramer one, I think. I would love to get the 'Shark' guitar - even though my Dean ZX handles that job pretty well. ;-)
There were other guitarists who did tapping before Van Halen, but he took it to a level no one could have even imagined. He also took slapping, probably borrowed from funk bass players, did it on guitar and took it places no one ever dreamed of. I had never seen anyone do tap harmonics before, and then he combined that with pinch notes AND sliding his right hand index finger up the neck while running scales with his left hand. I am still in awe almost 45 years after I first heard Van Halen. He was true innovator with a feel and technique that no one has ever duplicated. RIP.
I saw them in concert twice with DLR as the frontman. No doubt Eddie had mastered the guitar. My favorite was his playing on the song Panama. His guitar work enhanced that song to the nth degree. Otherwise, his playing wasn’t that appealing to me. I was impressed by Alex on drums. The man could drum! Watching Roth as the front man was a mix between a circus and a carnival event. Their shows were loud and entertaining events. There is nothing wrong with that. I just preferred music with harmonies, melodies and instrumentation that punctuated the music and lyrics. Thanks, Fil, for making me listen to this solo. There was more melody than I remembered in their live concerts. I look forward to the 2nd half of this video!
I am not a guitar player but I have always loved the guitar. The explanations and commentary you give so enhance my listening experience. You allow me to bring a little more understanding into what would otherwise be just a wow moment...not I guess that there's anything wrong with that. Thanks.
