I forgot where I mentioned this (its been a loooong week), but there's a guitarist, Bernth, who explains the guitar and guitar related things, in a way that anyone can understand it, which is super helpful. And his members and/or followers make huge strides.. look at this entrance to his riff challenge .. ruclips.net/video/Y79C7xYDpVM/видео.html Always forward.. Kiitos 🤘🏼
Eddie Van Halen's guitar solos were partially practiced beforehand, like the Cathedral section, and partially improvised. He might have had a dozen little sections like that that he'd pull out at random, sometimes he'd throw a bit in and sometimes not, depending on his mood. I'd say 60% practiced beforehand, and 40% improvised. I saw him live about a half dozen times in the 80s, and never heard the same solo twice.
Eddie was larger than life and this performance just shows his utter joy in performing and playing his guitar. He is absolutely one of the greatest ever. RIP EVH RIP...
This is why the guitar (Or any string instrument) is so impressive: The methods of sound. Finger placement on chords. Tension of chords. Force used to vibrate chords. Distance between finger placement and where you vibrate chord. Plucking chord. Strumming chord. Tapping/Slapping chord. Volume control. Holding chords down. Bending chords. Chords played together at same time. Using fingertips to "roll" chord to keep sound going. Pressure of finger on chord. Sliding finger up or down chord. Using pick up or down chord. The "slide bar" on chord. Shape design. "Whammy"/Tremolo altering chord tension WHILE vibrating. Foot pedals to add/subtract sounds produces. "Talk Box" using output into different devices or into mouth as "chamber" to distort sound. Finger, Bow, Pluck producing different types of vibrations for sounds. Number of chords. Thickness of instrument. Electrical or acoustic. And this isn't even covering the differences between "bass" guitar and "lead" guitar. EVERYTHING above can change the way that a guitar sounds at any given time. So in order to really understand the complexity of someone like Eddie, or Vaughn, you have to understand that it isn't just a simple "strum the chord and put fingertips here" that is going on. He is REALLY working that guitar like a master artist creating a Mona Lisa or Venus type work of art. A complete masterpiece that is so complex and detailed that the "general public" can go "Wow, that's great"... but those who are "in the know" by being trained are sitting back going "HOW the f*** can he do all of that intricate detail so effortlessly and make it LOOK so damn simple?".
Hes showcasing all the different things he's known for. That's what his solo was, you got some Eruption, Spanish Fly, Mean Streets, Cathedral, Little Guitars etc... These were all on VH albums. He improvised but he knew what he was improvising, because most of that stuff was improvised when he first played it.
He's turning the volume button up and down to create this effect. Also, uses a tremolo bar, which if pulled, pulls the strings tighter and higher pitched. Push down on it and it makes the strings turn to mush
For extra context... His original franken-strat didn't have enough room in the cavity to allow the FR to be pulled. So he could only dive. Every guitar he's created/played since only has a tremolo that can dive only.
@@chrisw647 I was about to start typin' then I saw your post. You saved me the finger work lol. "Cathedral" is a balance of volume swelling and delay. And its noticeably different if one or the other is excluded.....so....best be a coordinated mutha' fucker
I think you mean it cannot be overestimated. Cannot be underestimated means it has no value. Similarly to his contributions cannot be overstated... No matter how much credit you give him, it is not an exaggeration.
Eddie Van Halen was on his own level as guitar player and he earned the right to be called one of the greatest guitar players of all time and is the same guitarist who *PERFECTED* the *Guitar tapping* technique. MORE Van Halen please 😎
Great reaction 👏. I could say so much about these guys I'm 65 and grew up with these guys in socal. Eddie is the best, from making his guitar sound like a violin and a cello to the fast finger movements and when to use a pick and when to not. All i can say is you just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie ❤
@@scottalynch I was just going to let him know that Eddie did start on the piano, Then the drums. Ultimately he took up the guitar and switched with Alex and OMG did he transcend to a Whole new UNIVERSE!
9:48 What he is doing is turning the volume knob up and down to generate swelling sounds (almost like a violin or cello) while at the same time, he has a delay effects pedal that can produce an echo style effect. It's a fun little trick. Damn, this guy could play, and inspired generations of guitarists. It might be the Kansas boy in me, but my personal favorite piece he did was a keyboard and guitar instrumental he and his brother did called "Respect the Wind." They wrote it for the movie, "Twister," which is about a team of tornado chasers. Cheesy, over the top, and unrealistic movie, but a fun watch, and the song is just gorgeous.
Except Eddie has gone on record saying he's never used a pedal in his life; he only plays a guitar plugged straight into an Amp. But yes I love the way he generates the swelling sound with the volume knob. Also, I believe Angus Young has never used a pedal as well.
Definitely a master of his craft. All the masters create their own distinct sound through long hours of practice and innovation. Eddie didn't create tapping, but he definitely perfected his own style and took it to new levels. I was honored to see them twice live in their hayday and they put on a great show. They have lots of great songs, check out "Hot for Teacher", "Panama", "Mean Street", "Running with the Devil" really just about anything that pops up is awesome. Nice job on the review.
This was my first time sitting in with you today, thank you for allowing me to do that! Your reaction was fabulous! I look forward to sitting in with you again! I'm sure everyone else told you the answers to all of your questions, but you didn't ask about the picks that he was throwing out, I'm pretty sure you noticed, you had a questioning look on your face each time! But yes, those were picks!
@@BisscuteReacts Thank you for answering me, this is all pretty new to me, I'm old(er) and I never thought I'd be on a computer let alone viewing reactions at RUclips, my children are proud of me! You made my day better just by being alive!
Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see younger generations discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
Edward "Eddie" Van Halen is considered one of the greatest guitarists of all time... he passed away in 2020 from cancer 😪Van Halen, for some reason, were never as popular in Europe as they were in America or Japan. Eddie and his brother Alex Van Halen were from the Netherlands, their parents moved them to the USA and settled in Pasadena, California... Eddie tried learning piano but was not the best student... he could play very well at an early age. He and Alex played music together as kids, w/ Alex on guitar and Eddie on drums... but they later switched after Eddie became more obsessed w/ the guitar. In 1972, while Eddie & Alex were still in school, they formed the band that would become Van Halen and played at school events w/ Eddie Van Halen playing guitar and singing, while Alex Van Halen played drums... they rented a P.A. system to play shows from another aspiring singer named David Lee Roth. They decided to hire Roth as the band's singer in 1973 (it was cheaper to have him sing) while Eddie concentrated on his guitar playing. Eddie built his first guitar from parts of other guitars - he called it 'Frankenstein' (it looked like the one in this video). David Lee Roth came from a rich family and could get the band rehearsal space and could organize their set... Roth also recognized Eddie Van Halen's talent on guitar... he suggested the band be named 'Van Halen' because it sounded like a marquee name, and people would come to see Eddie Van Halen play guitar, since Roth knew he was not the best live singer. Bassist Michael Anthony joined in 1974 and would do backup vocals in Van Halen w/ Eddie... By 1976, Van Halen were playing the clubs in Hollywood and Los Angeles, and were quickly becoming a big attraction in the local scene, playing covers and their original songs. Gene Simmons of Kiss saw Van Halen live at a club in L.A. in 1976 and offered to help record their demos to get them signed... However, it took months for anyone to be interested (disco music was big in 1977, not rock music)... But Van Halen finally got signed to Warner Bros. Records in 1977 and did their first album w/ producer Ted Templeman. Roth wanted Van Halen to be a rock band that people could dance to... so that they could get girls. While in the studio, Eddie Van Halen did a warm-up on guitar and the producer recorded it and put it on the album as 'Eruption', which was the intro to their first single 'You really got me' (by The Kinks) in 1978 from the first Van Halen album. With an album out in 1978, Van Halen opened for Black Sabbath on tour, and they were blowing them off the stage every night... Sabbath did not have a hit record, while Van Halen's first album sold 10 million copies in the USA. Van Halen had the attraction of seeing Eddie Van Halen on guitar, while David Lee Roth gave an acrobatic, energetic performance on stage... by 1979, Van Halen was headlining arenas and Eddie Van Halen was being hailed as the new great guitarist of the time... Van Halen's music set the tone for rock music in the 80's. However, after 6 albums by 1984, Van Halen were coming apart from tensions between Roth and the rest of Van Halen... They were selling millions of records and playing arenas and stadiums, but in 1985, David Lee Roth was out of Van Halen and opted for a solo career. Van Halen decided to carry on after Eddie got in touch w/ solo singer Sammy Hagar (who had been in the band Montrose in the early 70's)... Hagar signed up w/ Van Halen in 1986 and released the '5150' album, which went to #1 on the US charts... At this point, Eddie Van Halen was also playing keyboards and synthesizers on Van Halen records. Unfortunately, the collaboration of Van Halen w/ singer Sammy Hagar ended in 1996 after a bitter disagreement between Hagar and Eddie. David Lee Roth wanted to return as Van Halen's singer, but that didn't happen. By 2004, years of alcohol and drug abuse had taken a toll on Eddie Van Halen... his skills were compromised on a tour that year w/ Hagar returning on vocals... Van Halen brought back David Lee Roth on vocals in 2007, but had fired bassist Michael Anthony and replaced him w/ Eddie's son Wolfgang Van Halen on bass... The reunion tours were hugely successful, but only 1 studio album was made between 2007 and 2015 (when Van Halen toured last). There was talk of another Van Halen tour in 2017, but Eddie Van Halen, who had battled cancer, was in poor health... he passed away in 2020 and likely Van Halen as well...
No wonder he passed away from cancer though, the way he was smoking... Boy couldn't even have a solo without that cigarette! Hahaha... Rock In Paradise Eddie!
Eddie Van Halen....hands down the greatest guitar player EVER!!! Was so glad I was able to see him and the band back in the '80's in Syracuse, NY. RIP EVH!!
Great reaction! You really paid attention to the details of his playing, and made some great observations about his creativity. Eddie Van Halen was a genius song writer, composer and guitar player who will be remembered in 200 years from now, in the same way we remember Mozart from 200 years ago.
Your never going to see anything like this anywhere. He is the only guitar player in the world that could make these sounds . He was the best of all time .
There's so much going on here. Lol utilizing the tremolo springs from the back of his guitar, the volume button, harmonics, finger tapping. Ugh. Just a beast but a beast with a heart of gold. I (We) are blessed to have to had the pleasure of growing up witnessing this gift. Rip Edward Van Halen
Yup I had the 0ppertunity to see Van Halen live in concert in 1982 the diiver down tour and the 1984 tour with David Lee Roth the original lead vocalist of Van Halen. And yes this guitar solo was straight up insane. It brings back some sweet memories watching this reaction.
This is a video is part of the " Live without a net " tour from 1986 . H had been playing " Eruption" as a warm up before playing on stage . Basically he came up with it around '74 . When they did their first album Ted Templman told Ed to put it on the album . This solo is a conglomeration of all the things he came up with and away to showcase it . He was also trained , him and his brother , who is the drummer , hence the name Van Halen , on piano . Ed started on the drums and Alex started on the guitar but while Ed was out delivering news papers , Alex took over the drums , Ed said he got better , so I picked up the guitar, this was around '65 to '70 . The reason I say that is because Ed said he wanted to play what Cream and the MC-5's were playing , not clunking on piano . Alex said Ed picked it up quick . All the techniques he is doing he came up with himself , with the exception of the finger tapping , he said he got it from Billy Gibboms of ZZ Top but Billy played one note whereas Ed played arpeggios , three or more notes . Now the tapping harmonics , was Ed's , basically you tap the string 12 frets up from where you are holding the note . Thats beginner, as you learn , harmonics are all over the place , then you will find them . That is what made him the G.O,A,T. he was not just a good song writer , guitar player , both rhythm and lead , he was also an innovator .
Yes, Eddie Van Halen would play the same solo in concert, which was made up of a number of his most famous guitar licks on Van Halen records til that point... he wasn't big on improvisation. But his tricks on guitar were so groundbreaking that he changed guitar playing forever... It takes skills & co-ordination w/ his instrument and various pedals and such to pull off what he did in concert 🤘🤘
I'm sure before the guys went on tour, they had a plan and a vision of how to play their songs. And the same with Eddie's solo. He knew how to bring in different sounds and he knew what the crowds wanted to hear and see. He was/is a musical treasure. And thank you Bisscute for sharing your wonderful videos for us, your fans! And for keeping the Rock and Roll alive for your generation to see. You are a treasure 💖
The "bar" is a tremolo bar. It's connects to a special bridge that allows the strings to become looser or lighter depending on whether the guitar pulls or presses the bar. Edward was famous for his tremolo "dive bombs". He rarely pulled the bar. There are springs that causes tension. During a part of the solo, he's striking the springs underneath the guitar.
he improvised the guitar solo every time...and the silver cord your talking about is called the whammy bar (tremolo bar) when you pull it up or down it changes the pitch of the strings either loosening or tightening them...this is a special tremolo called a Floyd Rose it keeps the guitar perfectly in tune not matter how much you use the whammy bar...so the nob he turning is the volume nob lol hes using it mixed with a delay sound effect that makes the guitar sound like a violin
This is something I recently became conscious of, how much practice goes into this level of music. He's literally a genius, one who is willing to go as far as possible, and then some, to become a master crafstman. Love your insights.
He has so-called "hooks" that is parts that hold it all together, but between those "hooks" it is basically improvised, so each and every night it is different.
Cool! I first go to see them, also my very first (of many!) concert in 1980 during their "Invasion Tour" here in Augusta, GA at the age of 8...needless to say, I was hooked immediately and remain a huge VH Fan to this day.
So happy you reacted to Van Halen, they are my favorite band right there with AC/DC. You mentioned that the different parts he played could be solos by themselves and they are. The first part where he was sitting on the stage was called 316, then some extended improv of Eruption, then where the lights go blue is a solo called Cathedral, then the intro to a song called Mean Streets. He is a genius and I agree it's astonishing how many sounds he make with the Guitar. This was from the concert Live Without A Net, please check out Best Of Both Worlds (Long Version) from the same concert.
If u wanna check out some classic Van Halen songs, I suggest these - "Ain't talkin' bout love" ... "Dance the night away"... "Panama"... 'Hot for teacher'... "Jamie's crying" ... "Everybody wants some"... 'Mean street'... 'Unchained'... 🤘🤘🔥🔥 Van Halen's keyboard-oriented hits are these songs - 'Jump' ... "I'll wait"... "Dreams"... "When it's love" ... "Why can't this be love". And other Van Halen songs (w/ Sammy Hagar on vocals) - 'Poundcake' ... 'Right now'... 'Summer nights' ... 'Runaround' ... "Don't tell me"
I have to admit. I had low expectations for this reaction. Thought you would not understand what you were watching and how genius it was. Too my surprise you listened intently and had good questions. I'll subscribe. Well done.
@@BisscuteReacts Eddie's influence still reaching out. You've reacted to them once I think...but here's some ladies with a HOT instrumental and the lead doing 'tappies' like Eddie (probably no coincidence that, like Eddie, she studied classical piano as a kid...the way they play arpeggios on the neck of the guitar) ... ruclips.net/video/mVrN-j_Uc0U/видео.html
#10:09 There is a delay set to about 385 milliseconds with one repeat (echo). The volume mutes the noise each time he hammers the note with his left hand. The notes can then bounce and make it sound like a church organ.
👋 biss, EVH, an artist that revolutionized his instrument, like peart did for drums, both bringing it to a way other level, inspiring, challenging, making other musicians, practice ,get better. saw him/VH twice. his solos were mesmering RIP eddie 🎸 🙏
AWESOME!!! R.I.P LEGEND......When its natural its not really hours invested ....its natural..he is turning the volume knob makes it all the more amazing.
RIP King Edward. Few people played the guitar as well as him and as long as him yet still looked like he was a kid having the time of his life every single concert.
My man Eddie! Met this man in 1990... I was with some friends at a bar in Florida, and playing pool. Eddie was there chilling by himself I think after a concert Van Halen just had. I came up to him and said I loved his guitar playing. He said, "Cool dude. Hey don't be stranger sit down, man.. did you see the concert?" I said no I was just there for some other business but I wish I had, and sat down next to him. I was just 18 years old, and was feeling like a fanboi, but his gentle demeanor was more like we are equals. He said , "You look like you could use a beer little man!" so he flicked his finger up, and a waitress came and he ordered for us. He wanted a beer and chaser for it, a Jegermeister, and a beer for my new friend here. So he asked me, "So do you play? You look like a guitarist to me" and I confirmed his suspicions. Said I'd been working on Eruption for a while but my fingers would ache up at a certain point. He said, "That's what beer is for, my newfound young friend. Bro, it's not in the wrist it is in the attitude and the heart." and he made a air-guitar gesture but smooth and relaxed. I noticed that his front tooth was missing when he smiled (he smiled and laughed a lot!). Thought he probably lost it in a fight. We talked about a bunch of stuff and eventually my friends who were playing pool and hadn't even noticed Eddie was there came up being like lapdogs to him. Eddie said, "Looks like your friends there want to play some pool with you... Nice to meet you man!" and I chugged what was left of my beer and said thanks. We did a bro handshake, and I left him there to his devices and rejoined my friends, after they got their autographs. It was an exhilirating, magical moment. And what a great guy he was! Cheers from earth to heaven, Eddie!!
The silver metal handle Eddie is pulling on his Stratocaster at some instances changes the pitch of all six strings by bending the bridge (where the strings are mounted) creating a slight pitch variation in the sound.
The silver bar you were asking about is called tremolo bar. Basically if you push it down, it detunes the guitar and if you pull it up it tunes the guitar up. His guitar is set up in a way that it only goes down btw. The tremolo bar allows for very cool and vocal effects due to the quick and easy access to modulation. The knob is the volume control. He is using a perfectly timed delay to create that violin-like effect. As you can see he basically created many different techniques and even inspired gear inventions that essentially defined what the rock genre became in the 80s and later on. TL DR; there was guitar before Eddie, and then there was guitar after Eddie. Once eruption hit the airwaves, the instrument was never the same.
This long piece is actually from the song called eruption that is only about a minute and a half long. When this came out it blew everybody away. The actual song is mixed into this solo and unless you know the song you're not going to understand which parts of it are in it. The truth is, as far as I know he made a lot of this up simply as he went along, which is the amazing part.
Eruption is only 100 seconds long (1m40s) so it has been extended and embellished with additional bits & pieces. It is also the second track on their first self-titled album back in 1978. I always found it odd they did not open the album with this and have it crossover going into the album's actual opening track, Running With The Devil, as usually these short instrumental tracks are used as intros to regular songs. Before checking out these live versions, I always recommend hearing the original studio version first so one can tell what's been added (or taken away or modified) in the live performance.
You should check out Tina S on You Tube play Eruption ,she copied the original studio version almost exact .I haven't listened to the original for like 20 years and when I listened to her version it was almost like listening to the original . : )
@@edwardrumsey3407 Tina S is crazy-talented. I've seen her rendition of a Beethoven piece (Moonlight Sonata or something), and I may have seen the Eruption cover. Lots of hot chicks shredding like nobody's business.. Sophie Lloyd is another one.
You will never watch a more gifted guitar player ever. It doesn't matter if you watch old Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, or anyone...none of them will drop jaws like EVH.
omg i was looking at eruption reactions and i miss Eddy saw this again with you. as always you look amazing. i was just subscribing to reactions for Eddie. also when e flicks his wrist he threw picks to the audiance.the thihg he is rolling is the volume nobe he is known to be able to make sounds from a guitar like animals that nobody ever did to me he is the best guitarist ever.. And i hopie i said you look amazing. i started off watchin metalica whiskey in the jar. wander were i ill end uip at, LOL...
1. The silvery "stick" he's using is mounted to the base where the strings rest. So pushing it down lowers the tension of strings, lowering the notes they produce. And vice versa when pulling. 2. The knob he's twisting is the volume knob, a technique that allows him to roll off the attack of the notes, so the guitar sounds more like a violin or a cello. Eddie has said in interviews that the reason he developed a lot of his unusual techniques was that he couldn't afford effect pedals. A stellar example of an old adage: That restrictions can enrich your music.
there was a story here on youtube about Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains the lead guitar secondary vocalist, he was on tour and at one point him and Eddie Van Halen were talking, Jerry was staying at a place in WA in Spanaway to be exact and i guess while he was on tour Eddie sent over a bunch of guitar peices and hardware to Jerrys garage. his room mate was like, hey someone dropped a bunch of stuff off when you were gone and yeah he filled this garage with parts for Guitars to mod his own... truly the coolest thing ive ever heard..
Eddie Van Halen was THE guitar God of all time. He never had a guitar lesson in his life but rather taught himself how to play from the age 5th 5of 16 after already being taught how to play piano bwy his mother from a young child. He has done more for the guitar than any other guitarist and no one has ever made more people want to learn to play from his playing. He was a musical God given ear for music and there will not be anyone better in a 1000 lifetime's. Guitar World named him "The Guitar God!" He died this year and music will never be the same ever again. If you never saw him play live you missed out of something vert incredible and once in a lifetime experience. WE WILL MISS YOU EDDIE!!!"❤❤❤
It's called tremolo or the whammy bar. When it is used,it can make the tension in the strings to relax or give more tension, thereby making the notes ascend or descend or wiggle or vibrate 📳 It is used to make the notes go up the pitch or down, or vibrate. Can do many things. Here, he uses it with his harmonics which makes it scream like wwwwwwhhhhhhaaaaaooooooooo. Eddie is a phenomenal guitar player. Every guitar player knows eruption. His guitar tone is also like no other. Of course he modifies the electronics of it. His playing style also rhythms + melody notes is also very unique. That is called swelling where the volume knob is constantly turning it up and down. With heavy delay on the sound effects, he is crafting a very intricate, melodic, very different sound. A master at his craft work.
He's turning the volume knob on the guitar to change the tone. Back then they didn't have computer software to do it for them behind the scenes. Back then they had an effects board at their feet so they could add different effects to the sound of the guitar as they played. Now it can all be simulated on a computer.
Eddie was one of the greats! The silver thing you’re referring to that changes the notes is called a whammy bar, or vibrato bar. It connects to the bridge where the base of the strings ride on and it’s designed for giving vibrato by loosening or increasing the string tension, which changes its pitch. And during the part where he’s rolling the volume knob to give a “violin” type of sound, those are called “volume swells”. It’s a cool little technique to give the notes that violin sound! You should react to Yngwie Malmsteen and Steve Vai! They are two other guitarists that are widely known as the greats!
The best sounding riff/solo was done on their first album in 1978!! We do have tapping here where he leaves the pickups and it is done extremely well!! He is in the level of greatness here as Joe Satriani, Yngvie Malmsteen and Stevie Vai!! Most of the time though, his guitaring is for the song!! Van Halen is a good solid band!! Consider them for sure!!
He is the GOAT, because first of all, he pioneered how the guitar works, and sounds by hand building his guitar, changing traditional ways they were built, and thus changing pretty much how every rock guitar and rock guitar player sounds and looks. Also, there was finger tapping on guitars before him, but never how he did it, creating a new style never before seen and since, every electric guitar player mimics his style. An innovator, creator, visionary, true genius, and master of his instrument. He would get unique sounds and do things on the guitar that every guitar player around the world at the time went... Waaaat was that??? 😳 How'd he do that??? Nuff said lol. Greatly missed.
I know this comment is almost one year after you reacted, but consider this. Eddie and Alex (drummer) are from a musical family. Eddie wanted to play drums and bought a kit when he was young. While he was away delivering newspapers to pay for the drums, Alex started playing them and would end up becoming the drummer he is now. Had he not done this, Eddie would never had started teaching himself the guitar and experimenting with building his own.
The modern guitar set up has wah wah pedal to utilize those thrmelo duve bomber sounds also the volume knob hes using to sound like an classical oby instrument. The tapping on the fretboard to get space sounds is just creativity the tapping and picking he doed is his style. There's a video on youtube where he did a sitdown video and pretty much tells his story and demonstrates several guitars he built himself.
Hey Biss! Really cool to see you react to some Van Halen. They were my favourite band growing up and Eddie's playing inspired me to pick up the guitar. He took the guitar to a new level and inspired a generation. Would highly recommend starting with their first studio album (Van Halen)
This solo started out as a practice routine that he would do before a concert while he was warming up getting ready to play and then they decided to integrate it into their concerts. But it started out as just a warm up routine.
Great video and I love your reaction. Eddie is the Beethoven,Mozart and Bach of our time. His musical genius could not be fully shown in one lifetime. It would take several lifetimes. Who knows maybe his soul keeps coming back in different bodies at different times. I just enjoy music and anything that is a masterpiece attracts my attention. This is a masterpiece that would entertain anyone no matter what type they have interest in.
It was a delay effect, echoing already played notes. In right tempo with right delay sets you can make this sound when seems that you're playing a really huge amount of notes per second, but it's really 2 times less. Other notes makes by your delay. Also he was playing with his volume. When distorted sound, if you turn it down a bit you're getting less gain and a bit quiet sound. On a contrast with common high gained sound it looks interesting.
6:31 Called a "Whammy Bar" what it looks like a metal stick when you pull down, it losens the string so the tune goes down making a low tune note like this one 3:37, 8:53 and more
The silver bar you're talking about is called a Whammy Bar, also known as vibrato bars and tremolo bars. These bars basically alter the pitch variation of your electric guitar by altering the tension of every string at once.
He is "rolling" the volume control knob.It is a tequnique known as a "volume swell" it is where you turn the volume all the way down, then finger a note and crank it up quickly then down again. If you repeat this process rapidly, it almost sounds like a violin.
Nice reaction. Eddie Van Halen was a total innovator with his guitars. Not only in playing them but also in creating them. He would pull a guitar a part and change parts til he got new sounds out of it. Eddie in fact has his own guitar tone called the Brown tone that was created by Eddie. Which is why so many can't sound the way he does when playing Van Halen songs. Unless you changed the guitar to get that sound, you simply can't sound like Eddie. You also got to see Eddie playing just about every part of the guitar. From the coils in the back, to the upper part of the strings next to the tuning knobs. Lastly, Eddie has said he was so drunk here he didn't remember what he played. That's a lot of muscle memory. On Van Halen albums Eddie would insert small guitar bits. Many parts of the solo were made up from those guitar bits. Every time Eddie played it was a guitar lesson. This was an advance lesson. Master class type stuff.
He pops the springs loose in the back of the guitar to play the cathedral song while using volume with a delay pedal. He plays 1 note cuts the volume off and the delay catches it then moves to the next note turning volume back up.
Very few humans can do this. This takes a massive amount of talent plus a huge amount of practice and hard work. Out of the 8 billion people on the planet there are only a few MAYBE a dozen at this level but he is ALONE at the top of that mountain.
My dad worked as an usher at an arena back in the late 50's, so he got to see a lot of concerts for free as a kid. He once asked a band member why they would have a smoke while playing. He was told that this was a "timing trick". Since a cigarette would take around 5min to "burn out" when left alone, the band member knew how long a "break" would take place. Basically, when you get to 1/2 a cigarette, you go into your "big finale" so that the band would know the "break" is over soon. Finish using the bathroom, finish your drink, or in some cases finish popping your pills, because the 2nd half of the show is about to start soon. Then you finish off your "big solo", finish your smoke, and start playing the first song of the "second set" of songs. This is no longer the situation because 1) Not that many people smoke cigarettes today, and 2) because companies have changed additives so that if a cigarette is left unattended it will "burn out" faster to reduce risks of fires. But before 1995 (or around then), this was seen as "cool" by the audience but actually had a real purpose for the band.
Also: Watch Sevendust “Denial”, think you will love that band. Also Van Halen watch some of the other performance from this show, could see you liking “Why Can’t This Be Love”, “Love Walks In”, “When It’s Love”, “Poundcake”,“Dreams”

Hi !!!!! Check the whole concert from which this solo is taken : Live without a net 1986 in New Haeven. The band takes her name from him and his brother's (the drummer, Alex) surname
couple of fun facts Eddie was born in Amsterdam his Father (Jan Van Halen) was a Jazz Pianist, Clarinetist and Saxophonist, The band is named after the 2 brothers Eddie and Alex, the guitar was not the instrument he was suppose to learn he was supposed to learn the drums but his brother Alex was playing them one day so Eddie picked up Alex's guitar and started playing, both brothers are classically trained (started playing piano at age 6) musicians but Eddie never learned how to read music (learned by watching recitals), just a couple in a long list of interesting Van Halen facts
Other guitarist to look at would be Ace Frehley of KISS , Shock Me from '77 live with his solo . Jake E Lee's solo from the Unltimatie Ozzy concert or Nuno Bennacort from Extreme , Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee .
Guys you are amazing all your comments are soooo helpul
I forgot where I mentioned this (its been a loooong week), but there's a guitarist, Bernth, who explains the guitar and guitar related things, in a way that anyone can understand it, which is super helpful. And his members and/or followers make huge strides.. look at this entrance to his riff challenge .. ruclips.net/video/Y79C7xYDpVM/видео.html Always forward.. Kiitos 🤘🏼
Eddie played a nob. Sounded like a violin. Just 1 thing you asked about. Hello from Massillon ohio
The best part of the solo is Cathedral.
@@jackteppo9633 , actually it sounds like a pipe organ , hence the name of the song , Cathedral
RIP Eddie. What a talent. Yet another great and animated reaction.
And nobody did it better than EVH!
Everything you mention is true of course yet Mr. Gilmour said "it's just bending wires."
And he did it all blind drunk on this particular recording...R.I.P. Kind Edward...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠
Wow, herrzimm, as a guitarist myself, that was a very insightful and very accurate. I wish I had written that!
He's rolling the volume knob ☝ up & DOWN to give the guitar a violin effect.
Yeah. It's called volume swells. Edward was going for the sound of a giant pipe organ (hence the name of the song this part came from: Cathedral).
"This could be called...Lessons with Eddie". I LOVE IT!
He's turning the volume button up and down to create this effect. Also, uses a tremolo bar, which if pulled, pulls the strings tighter and higher pitched. Push down on it and it makes the strings turn to mush
Or just fake it with delay, and make it look cool..
@@shanericketts5799 Uh, no. Volume swelling is an effect all by itself. Without doing that "Cathedral" would sound much different.
For extra context... His original franken-strat didn't have enough room in the cavity to allow the FR to be pulled. So he could only dive. Every guitar he's created/played since only has a tremolo that can dive only.
@@alanhightower976 A nice piece of info, much appreciated.
@@chrisw647 I was about to start typin' then I saw your post. You saved me the finger work lol. "Cathedral" is a balance of volume swelling and delay. And its noticeably different if one or the other is excluded.....so....best be a coordinated mutha' fucker
He basically rewrote the rules on what was possible on the electric guitar, his impact on modern rock music cannot be underestimated.
I think you mean it cannot be overestimated. Cannot be underestimated means it has no value. Similarly to his contributions cannot be overstated... No matter how much credit you give him, it is not an exaggeration.
@@chrisbolliger5717 yes, that is what I meant, but my auto correct didn't agree! Lol

Eddie Van Halen was on his own level as guitar player and he earned the right to be called one of the greatest guitar players of all time and is the same guitarist who *PERFECTED* the *Guitar tapping* technique.
MORE Van Halen please 😎
Well said
RIP Eddie
Great reaction 👏. I could say so much about these guys
I'm 65 and grew up with these guys in socal. Eddie is the best, from making his guitar sound like a violin and a cello to the fast finger movements and when to use a pick and when to not. All i can say is you just watched the greatest Rock and Roll guitar player that's ever lived. RIP Eddie ❤
Thank you
He was self taught. He started as classical pianist. Once he picked up the guitar the music world was never the same
Piano, then he played drums with Alex on guitar, then they switched with Eddie on guitar and Alex on drums
I saw VH twice when I was a teenager. PURE JOY! EVH (R.I.P.) was an incredible guitarist but an even better human. I Loved the man, miss him so much.
Thank you so much, and I hope you continue to enjoy your stay❤️
@@BisscuteReacts Thank you for answering me, this is all pretty new to me, I'm old(er) and I never thought I'd be on a computer let alone viewing reactions at RUclips, my children are proud of me! You made my day better just by being alive!

Well said, SJ...now that's a complete, succinct history lesson you presented!
@@vovindequasahi he did that for the 🎸 guitar's benefit, because it needed a smoke after the fu@king he gave it!...lol...from Wyoming USA 🇺🇸 🤠
I found this entire 1986 concert on youtube. It's freaking amazing from start to finish
Thanks for a nice reaction again. You're very perceptive! He was the greatest. R.I.P Eddie
"Lessons with Eddie", wow, your words was the best I have heard these days. And you are correct, Eddie really enjoyed to play guitar. Success to you!!
THANKS Brought back memories of getting to see him twice Live once with Dave and once with Sammy
My first concert was Van Halen in 1979...I was 14 and was totally blown away....a true guitar GOD!!!
Van Halen's keyboard-oriented hits are these songs - 'Jump' ... "I'll wait"... "Dreams"... "When it's love" ... "Why can't this be love".
And other Van Halen songs (w/ Sammy Hagar on vocals) - 'Poundcake' ... 'Right now'... 'Summer nights' ... 'Runaround' ... "Don't tell me"
awesome reaction..each one of his solos were different at each show..seen them live many times
I have to admit. I had low expectations for this reaction. Thought you would not understand what you were watching and how genius it was. Too my surprise you listened intently and had good questions. I'll subscribe. Well done.

@@BisscuteReacts Eddie's influence still reaching out. #10:09 There is a delay set to about 385 milliseconds with one repeat (echo). The volume mutes the noise each time he hammers the note with his left hand. The notes can then bounce and make it sound like a church organ.

Eddie Van Halen- The GOAT.....greatest of all time. R.I.P. & Thank You
Thank you for being here ❤
The silver metal handle Eddie is pulling on his Stratocaster at some instances changes the pitch of all six strings by bending the bridge (where the strings are mounted) creating a slight pitch variation in the sound.
Fender makes Stratocasters. That is a Kramer, custom built for him.
Hi bisscute iam Paul from England Eddie van Halen passed away from cancer a few years ago very sad rip Eddie we have lost a legend 🇬🇧🤘🤘🤘🤘🤙❤️
He's playing off the top of his head with certain noteable, memorable, things involved
Guitar players, this is how we do things.
His smile was very infectious.

Tina S is crazy-talented. I've seen her rendition of a Beethoven piece (Moonlight Sonata or something), and I may have seen the Eruption cover.
Lots of hot chicks shredding like nobody's business.. Sophie Lloyd is another one.
I've seen many dissect this performance, but yet to see a live performance equal this.
You will never watch a more gifted guitar player ever. It doesn't matter if you watch old Hendrix, SRV, Clapton, or anyone...none of them will drop jaws like EVH.

Late watching your reaction, I watched a interview with his hospice nurse, that very interesting as what she said about his manners. 👍
there was a story here on youtube about Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains the lead guitar secondary vocalist, he was on tour and at one point him and Eddie Van Halen were talking, Jerry was staying at a place in WA in Spanaway to be exact and i guess while he was on tour Eddie sent over a bunch of guitar peices and hardware to Jerrys garage. his room mate was like, hey someone dropped a bunch of stuff off when you were gone and yeah he filled this garage with parts for Guitars to mod his own... truly the coolest thing ive ever heard..
Incredibly talented...
Very good choice! Note that he included classical music in this piece of art. Also the things he does with his Frankenstein guitar is amazing!
The guitar in that performance was custom made for him by Kramer.
The man was a genius musician, inventor and engineer. People forget that he had hit songs that accompanied his guitar playing.
wow ❤
Pure magic, but on the other hand I heard that some dude walked on water!! 🤔 ..... Peace!!
12 hrs a day for 35 yrs and here you go.👊🏽⚡️
Been a VH fan as long as I can remember. Eddie is pure legend. Enjoy.
Long live THE KING!!!!
Love the shirt and love the fingernail polish color. Also love them put together.
6:31 Called a "Whammy Bar" what it looks like a metal stick when you pull down, it losens the string so the tune goes down making a low tune note like this one 3:37, 8:53 and more
One of the tappings you said you really liked during the solo, is actually the intro to a song called Mean Street from the album Fair Warning,
The silver bar you're talking about is called a Whammy Bar, also known as vibrato bars and tremolo bars.
I'm glad the camera zoomed out at the 6 minute mark. Thought you were going to fall into Eddie's guitar,, lol.
That section where the lights turn blue? Every time I hear that part I can't help thinking about swimming with Whales
He’s just playing. Having fun. Got to meet and hang with them and Alice n chains in concert and bar after. He’s a cool guy
Also: Watch Sevendust “Denial”, think you will love that band. Also Van Halen watch some of the other performance from this show, could see you liking “Why Can’t This Be Love”, “Love Walks In”, “When It’s Love”, “Poundcake”,“Dreams”

The tremelo bar is used for changing the pitch of the entire instrument. Dive bombs and vibrato.
Hi !!!!! Check the whole concert from which this solo is taken : Live without a net 1986 in New Haeven.
The band takes her name from him and his brother's (the drummer, Alex) surname
What he is holding at @10:02 is the volume knob on the guitar twisting it from high to low simutaneously with the notes being played by his left hand.
REST IN PEACE, EDDIE. Dead way to soon at 63 years from cancer. Don't smoke cigarettes kids!
couple of fun facts Eddie was born in Amsterdam his Father (Jan Van Halen) was a Jazz Pianist, Clarinetist and Saxophonist, The band is named after the 2 brothers Eddie and Alex, the guitar was not the instrument he was suppose to learn he was supposed to learn the drums but his brother Alex was playing them one day so Eddie picked up Alex's guitar and started playing, both brothers are classically trained (started playing piano at age 6) musicians but Eddie never learned how to read music (learned by watching recitals), just a couple in a long list of interesting Van Halen facts
Other guitarist to look at would be Ace Frehley of KISS , Shock Me from '77 live with his solo . Jake E Lee's solo from the Unltimatie Ozzy concert or Nuno Bennacort from Extreme , Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee .
