He did the guitar work for Michael Jackson’s beat it for free. He came up with that guitar lick in just 20 minutes and didn’t charge Michael a penny because he didn’t realize what a hit song that beat it would become.

Great video man. You can't go wrong with this one. He is none other than Eddie Van Halen, Co founder of the group Van Halen with his brother the drummer Alex. He's one of the greatest ever and he's self taught. Alot of people don't realize he's just as good on the piano as the guitar. He passed away within the last couple of years. It was like losing a family member because I have been a fan for so long. He's the one that inspired me to play guitar. R.I.P. Eddie. We love you!! Keep up the great work.

Early Van Halen is where it's at! Try..."I'm The One" from Van Halen's self titled debut album from 1978. Other gems from that historical release are "On Fire", "Ice Cream Man", Running With The Devil", "You Really Got Me", "Ain't Talkin' Bout Love" and "Jamies Cryin". Their first album out the gate was revolutionary in that time. The next five albums featuring original frontman David Lee Roth would solidify their place in rock history and make them one of the top draws throughout the eighties. If you're going down this rabbit hole... start with their debut release Van Halen. They were young and hungry and out to take the world by storm, which is exactly what they did!

Got to see them on the Diver Down Tour at The Carrier Dome in Syracuse (been in Seattle for 25 years now). I was gonna say, before I saw your comment, that others got as good as Eddie with the physical skill of tapping but something just important that no one has ever approached is his soul at doing it. You can learn the skill but you either have style and passionate flair or you don't. He was like a shaman with that thing in his hands. It simply was him and he was it. Oh hey, also, Wolfie's band is called Mammoth (original VH name) or he plays as WVH as well. He hasn't been with Tremonti for a few years now.

Tremonti is Mark Tremonti's band. He was the guitarist & main songwriter for Creed. He is currently the lead guitarist for the band Alter Bridge which features Myles Kennedy on vocals & is a great guitar player himself. Mark is the singer as well as the guitarist of Tremonti. Wolfgang Van Halen has his own band called Mamoth VH. I don't think is a permanent member of Tremonti but helped them out by going on tour with them.

Ah, this brought me back! I discovered Van Halen growing up in Southern CA. One of my classmate's older sister was supposed to be baby sitting us but she took us to a backyard party instead and there they were.
    I was hooked since.
Fast forward years later, growing up as one of the nerdiest Asian surf girls around who was also hooked on computers, my vinyls & my walkman were Van Halen, a little bit of Journey, Zeppelin, Def Lepard, The Stones, Prince, AC/DC, Michael Jackson, Boz Scags - too many to list. When I heard Van Halen was going to be in concert locally, I ditched school for the first time in my life. They were worth getting into trouble for. I went with my other nerdy friends and we got 10th row floor seating. Eddie played Eruption and I went nuts!
Eddie & the guitar are synonymous. Nobody can play the guitar like Eddie, IMHO. Some come close, but Eddie is the king of guitar playing.
I now own my own tech company and I got a lot of my employees hooked on Van Halen. When we're pulling nighters, we crank up Van Halen all throughout the office a bit and I always make sure Eruption is on the top of the playlist.
@da real adogg, other Eddie's guitar you should listen to, Outta Love Again, Mean Streets, Unchained & Spanish Fly. But nothing beats Eruption.
Thanks for bringing me back. Rest in peace, Eddie.

You’ve just been introduced to the guitar legend that is one of the four members. You definitely need a rabbit hole dive because the whole band is legendary. It might be hard to find videos for some of their earliest stuff since they hit the scene in 78, but even just doing an audio reaction would be worth it. I always suggest Hot for Teacher and Panama as official videos because it really showcases the personality of the band. Van Halen opened for Journey back in the early years. Eddie was beast on the guitar! I heard Steve Perry say in an interview that VH would rock out the house insomuch that it encouraged Journey to take their concert to greater heights. Iron sharpening iron! RIP Eddie ❤ 👏

Agreed Kevin. There may be some that have had licks/fills in a song here or there that brings smiles to your face/ears,but no-one can hold a candle to EVH because of the body of work/solos/mini solos/sounds he brought to the table on more songs than you can count (figure of speech of course) No other player made it look as easy as Edward either and you could truly tell he was having the time of his life during every show while giving millions of fans the time of our life. I was part of the lighting crew on 13 of the show's (til I suffered an injury) during the tour for the 5150 album and eventhough it required busting your ass night after night, I still enjoyed watching many of those shows just like the fans in the seats. I never would've worked for them if David Lee Roth was still there because he was/is a straight up a-hole to every roadie I talked to who had worked for VH during his time.Sammy was always a great guy to the crew, just like Edward,Big Al and Mikey were. I got close to landing a tech position for Big Al,but unfortunately a previous tech from past tours was chosen due to a close longtime friendship with Big Al,but the lighting crew was still plenty of fun, aside from the long hours. Edward will always be the king forever plus can anyone truly tell/show me a guitar solo that holds a candle to EVH's "Eruption" masterpiece??? RIP Edward

And another quality that made him the best was the fact that he had absolutely no ego at all especially compared to the other big names we all know.He luckily shared a huge percentage with us of what he spent his life creating. Can you imagine the 1000s upon 1000s of hours he spent in the studio over his career. He made it look so damn easy too because of just how gifted he was.I always wondered if Edward & Big Al had continued playing the instruments each had started out with when they were both kids, assuming they were still good enough to land gigs and a record deal later on in their teenage years, what do we think Van Halen would've sounded like vs the way they sounded after switching to the instruments both became rock stars playing?? How would the guitar parts have sounded with Big Al playing it and Edward playing drums??

He is the GOAT!! He built his first guitar from old music stores. They would let him take pieces. He invented that way he runs his fingers length ways to the Guitar. He made an amp the no one could plug into & get the same rights. He even played at home, taught himself a lot of stuff most don't know how to do! He has 2 or 3 pattens to do with the guitar!! R.I.P Eddie Van Halen. He was married to Valerie Bertinelli from the original One Day at a Time and Hot in Cleveland!! They have a son named Wolfgang. Eddie and Valerie remained great friends!! If I remember correctly, she may have paid for part or all of his funeral arrangements. You were the GOAT!! I ❤ Eddie. He left us way to young!!!

Interesting fact; Van Halen was basically discovered playing in a club by Gene Simmons of KISS. He brought them into his recording studio, and the rest as they say, is history.
They had 2 lead singers. The original, David Lee Roth, who was definitely a showman, but, a bit of a primadonna. Thus, they eventually kicked him out. They then brought in Sammy Hagar. In my opinion, the better of the two singers, and the better voice. With Sammy, they had far more commercial success.
My personal favorite Van Halen song is "Poundcake". I mean, the guy plays his guitar with a power drill. Are you kidding me right now? 😂

Can't believe you have never heard of Eddie Van Halen! He was one of the best guitarist in the world. Right up there with Jimmy Page, Eric Clapton, and Stevie Ray Vaugn. You young ones really need to quit listening to today's crap they call music, and go back and listen to the old school classics. The best music was from the 1960's - 1980's.

The greatest guitar player that I would only say Hendrix narrowly beats out bc Hendrix sang as well. But Eddie who couldn't even read music pioneered guitar style where other guitarists tried to steal. He played on Michael Jackson's beat it also btw. Eddie passed of cancer but I've often thought he's upstairs jamming with Hendrix, mj on vocals with Davie bowie pitching in. How woukd that be??.

I had this on video cassette shortly after it was released. To. This. Day. It still gives me goosebumps when I listen to it. Eddie was my true hero. He was the reason I started playing guitar because he made it look like so much fun. (And it is.) His death hit me very hard. It makes my heart sing to see someone see/hear this for the first time. I could go on and on about this solo, which is actually a composite of many different small solos that were released over their career, but Eruption was the first one on the band's self-titled first album. If you want some good listening, start with their early releases. That was Eddie, playing a guitar with a couple of effects pedals and then straight into a Marshall stack - about as raw and basic as you can get. But their big commercial hits were the 1984, 5150, OU812, and For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge albums.
