There's only one Eddie Van Halen, there's no one else, Eddie Van Halen is simply above the rest, he's on another level man! I'm still amazed after all these years!
I remember listening to the debut album in my room with poster of him on my walls, staring at that album cover fixated on that guitar he's holding, thinking it was the coolest looking guitar ever! When I heard that he passed,a part of that wide eyed youth that was me died with him. Same with Neil Peart. Losing both of them was really hard to swallow.
I never tire of watching this. One day i hope to visit the galaxy from which he came. Im thankful that I lived during the era when he was crowned the GOAT .RIP EVH.
I never get tired of seeing reactions to this. I was about 20ft away on this tour and I'll never forget how my mind melted and it felt like my hair was on fire for days afterwards. He was definitely the GOAT and just a brilliant musician. I miss him daily because you never knew what else he would come up with from album to album. Thanks for the years of memories and much love for you Ed. 🎶
Edward Van Halen wrote the soundtrack to the best times of my life. I still wrestle with the fact that I cried more when he passed than when my own father died and my father and I were close!! RIP king Edward!!
I am 52 years old and the day I heard Eddie died I literally had to pull over on the side of the road and just CRY for a few minutes --- I literally never did that for any celebrity in my entire life --- that tells you the kind of impact he had on my life
.....and to believe he ripped this solo back in 1986 is amazing!! His creativity coupled with his immaculate timing is absolute genius. I'm blessed to have witnessed EVH live 14 times. RIP Mr. Van Halen.
I saw him as many or more. Van Halen played many backyard parties in Rosemead, Temple City, San Gabriel and Pasadena where I grew up. I saw them play the Pasadena Civic Center to kick off their first album "Van Halen" tour back in 78 and he did this same Eruption solo. Poor Diamond Dave never realized it wasn't him that was the backbone of this band, it was always Eddie and Alex.
Actually it was all of them at there best, all the way through 1984. Dave was best showman with primal scream that put band front and center, along with the greatest guitarist of all time. Diehard fan, but only got to see them once. My first concert march 1984 at Madison Square Garden.VH Forever!!!
In my opinion what makes Eddie and Hendrix the 2 greatest ever is they were innovators. There are a lotof great guitarists however no one changed the way guitar was played until Hendrix came along and then Eddie took it to a whole new level. He literally changed the way guitar was played and he was the reason guitar tabs were created.
Both Hendrix and Eddie moved my soul and inspired me so greatly as a musician. There are no words really, only memories, emotions and their influence on my own playing style.
I would have to respectfully disagree. Hendrix was good no doubt! But there were other guitarist's in Hendrix's era that were just as good if not better. Page, Campbell, Lee, just to name a few. When Eddie came along he blew the doors off of everything ever heard before. His playing and sound was like no other. No one was better than Eddie in his era. He was in a league of his own. Eddie also built his own guitars, hot rodded his own amps, and invented parts for the guitar. That's true innovation. Hendrix never did that.
I always loved most about Eddie was his contagious and sweet smile... just like a little boy opening a Christmas present. May he be resting in peace. I am so happy he got to live doing something he so obviously loved. I miss his smile, but God obviously needed him to share it Heaven now. RIP , Eddie. PS...I think they are all jamming in Heaven together now.
What's amazing is to have been there at their show and see Eddie play this. His smile was so charming and he always looked like he was having a great time. I'm so happy I took my son who was a beginning guitar player and we saw Van Halen in Park City under the stars on the side of the mountain. Magical nite. Like others have said each of our guitar heroes their special greatness to each genre of music. I like RUclips because now we have a chance to see the future generation of guitar players and how each of these greats have influenced them. My personal favorite up and comer is 12 yr old Taj Farrant from Australia. He has great technique and has even been written and had his own song chart.
I just think it's a weird fact not many people know that he was their opening act but quit really fast because the crowd kept calling Davy and weren't paying any attention to him.
I've seen a few of his videos that blow me away. My son started at about the same age as Taj..well back in the 90s and was good but Taj just has that something special.

That is why he is considered the greatest guitarist that has ever picked up a guitar
That's a great story. However it's my understanding that the solo was actually his warm up routine. Every new technique he learned he incorporated into the routine.
Eddie was more than a great musician, he was a true innovator in both equipment as well as playing style. There's many a great guitarist out there but Eddie and SRV are my number 1&2 slots.
*Harri* I HAVE to share this..... I grew up in Southern California in the 70's {as a teenager}.... I went to a party in Pasadena, CA once, which was about 25 min miles from my home. It was a huge party, several hundred, but Van Halen was playing.! Not to bore you but I was a touring musician during the early 80's, as a percussionist. Thanks for sharing David. I probably bumped into you at one of the kegs. I grew up in Culver City CA and had the good fortune of going to a cpl of backyard parties in Pasadena, saw them a handful of times at Gazzarri's on Sunset, then some concerts over the years with Dave and Sam. I feel incredibly fortunate. I also did some work on their mom's house after she passed away as they were getting it ready to put it up for sale. The house was empty pretty much, and I was alone doing my thing, then Alex dropped in and my heart skipped a few beats. Given the gravity of the situation with their mom just passing I couldn't be this immature fanboy, so I simply introduced myself, and I told him I was sorry for his loss. A very cool guy, and he gave me a couple of cassettes that were laying around (VH1 & 2). He left soon after that. It's unfortunate that people make really ignorant comments like Scott above, when they have zero clue what they're talking about. I cannot wrap my head around why people can be so ignorant. Maybe they want attention or they like to stir the pot and say controversial things for reasons unknown. But one thing is for certain, you can't fix stupid. Eddie was the first at many new things and a true legend . I was lucky enough to catch Van Halen twice live in the 80,s and they were SO good ! Just awesome to see people discover this man and his many talents .. RIP Eddie you will be missed Sir ! Great reaction !
To your question, I would like to point out an incredible guitarist, Yngwie Malmsteen. I somehow found him with the band "Rising Force", back in the day... I've been really enjoying the "reaction" videos to Van Halen and Eddie in particular. I saw them for the first time as a lead-in band for the Grateful Dead, 1980. I had no idea who they were. David Lee Roth got my attention. How to react to an acrobatic guy in tights and a superman cape running everywhere on stage singing his butt off? I got to the front of the stage, within 10 feet. Then I noticed Eddie doing things with a guitar I never imagined (I play guitar). He locked eyes with me and grinned. I will never forget it. The goat guitarist is subjective, of course, but he was a groundbreaker and participated in the musical score of my life. all the best
I think it's an impossible question, who is the greatest guitar player. It's not like 6 guys running a 100 yard dash against a clock. It's subjective. What one person likes in a guitar playing style, another may not. I like Eddie for the rock thing, he was a great player and innovator. I almost like his rhythm playing better than his lead playing. His rhythm work gets overlooked imho.
True, but I think one of the things he does the best is the way he seamlessly goes between both rythm and lead. He is so good at working it into the song and he gets u going without you even consciously being aware of it. A lot of people used to think it was multiple guitar players only to realize it was just EVH. Rip EVH, guitar legend no matter how u slice it.
Eddie Van Halen was a guitar God, he is simply the best hands down, what a legend he went away too soon. I did get to see him play in 1984 and again in 2007 when DLR rejoined the band. The 1984 concert was the best and loudest concert I have ever seen and Eddie’s guitar solo was as good as the one we just watched, well actually better since I was there to see it live 😮! Thank you for your reaction video as it brought back some really good feelings😎.
I loved your reaction, and thank you for letting the music play almost all the way through without stopping it, it's much better that way! Eddie Van Halen was the best guitar player that ever lived, he was an artist!
Eddie (ED)was most definitely the very best on the guitar. I have also seen and heard that even his guitar playing (with out tapping) is the very best. I have been playing for 50 years and I have heard many, many guitarists from the ventures, Dave Clark 5, Beatles, even the ones that Eddi was inspired by tapping. He has still taken this to the highest level. RIP Mr. Edward VanHalen.
I’ve seen him make the guitar talk , he’s awesome, there will never be another Eddie VanHalen Like Jimi Hendrix. Two guitarist that will never be topped
I was at the Diver Down tour in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 19th, 1982. It was awesome and his guitar playing or performing was something I will never forget.
There is no way to explain how he plays but just to except he is a God on the guitar and now he rocks the heavens with his creator. God said we had Eddie long enough and now he reached the final level that only GOD could give him R.I.P Eddie and tell God to leave me a seat open for when i get there.
When I was 8 years old the album 1984 came out and there was a version of Eruption on it. This was the first piece of music I really HEARD. I'd listened to lots of music before of course, but it was all background noise to me. Not this. My sister played it on her record player, a very nice component system my dad gave her when he upgraded. When the song ended o told her to play it again. She looked at me funny, being ten years older than me, but did as I said. We listened to it again. And again. I listened to that record, but especially that track, until I wore it out. I vowed that day that I'd learn to play guitar and learn to make it sound like that and captivate people the way I was. It didn't come to be, but on my very short list of heroes, Eddie Van Halen sits squarely and securely. His music has brought a lifetime of joy, happiness, and many other emotions. Part of me died the day he passed. I love watching these reaction videos because it takes me back to that day in my sister's room, the day I first fell in love with music.
He was the King......n.1........i love Hendrix, i love Srv, i love J. Page, and many others Guitar Player, bit Eddie Van Halen was surely a true innovator, a Pioneer of Electric Guitar.......R.I.P. man.......your music Will live Forever.....
but if there was no hendrix none of those guys would 've been what they became and that includes eddie vanhalen even though he never wanted to admit it ; the eruption solo sounds just like the extended solo piece hendrix played at woodstock all you have to is check out the video of his entire set at woodstock .
I saw Van Halen do 2 shows back to back nights in 1984 in ATL at the old Omni. They were amazing both nights. I was exhausted just watching them play. How Eddie could play the guitar like he did 2 nights in a row like he did boggles my mind.
I was blessed to have witnessed his alchemy live on the 1984 Tour when I was 16. Now imagine hearing everything he's doing here, but at concert level volume! Eddie was a level of skill and talent and innovation that will not be matched ever again in this lifetime.
@@johnnyb6067 It was a glorious time. No riots,no stampeding, the bands performed their whole set lists without getting pissed of and storming off stage or trying to incite riots. And you got your money's worth plus 3 or 4 encores. Bands didn't start blathering about what bothered them in the middle of a song. And in those days it was easy to sneak in "party favors" and nobody said shit about it other than "Hey man,can I hit that?" In those days we came home reeking of beer, weed, cigarettes and sweat and would talk for two weeks about how awesome the show was. It saddens me knowing that concerts will never be like that ever again. Once ticketmaster came along,it was over. I wish the younger generation could experience a show the way I did. I think that's why I enjoy watching reaction videos. It's like getting to experience the music I listened to with fresh ears, even if those ears are someone else's.
Eddie was a fan of the lead guitarist of the group Pantera,Dime Bag Darrell Abbott. When Dime passed away Eddie put one of his( Eddies) guitars in the coffin with him.
Eddie took it to a whole new level back in the 70s and 80s. A lot of guys today can play as well or better than Eddie could (Steve Vai for example) but EVH innovated a whole new approach to guitar playing and influenced a whole new generation of guitar players.
The variety of techniques developed by Edward sets him at the top. Another factor to add, is his genius in the electronics of the guitar and amplifier and effects. He has, and will continue to influence, as many guitarists as Hendrix for which he rightfully gets credit.
I grew up in San Gabriel Ca next door to Pasadena and started seeing Van Halen playing around in high school. Originally called Mammoth. You're wondering how anyone can be so advanced and excellent playing guitar. Eddie started out playing piano, then drums, while his brother Alex played guitar. They discovered that they were both better playing each others instruments so they switched it up. Eddie became so good partly because of natural talent but primarily because he spent almost every available waking minute practicing, while he was designing and building his own guitars. The bastard Stratocaster you see him playing got the name Frankenstrat because of it. Eddie is considered by many, including myself, to be one of the very best, most talented, creative, and masterful guitarist there is.
I truly enjoy seeing someone react to the first time they listen to Edward's solo. It really is mind blowing. Saw them live 4 times and their music got me through my teens. RIP EDWARD! 😰🤩
Eddie was self-taught. He worked extremely hard to learn the guitar himself. No lessons or anything. Just himself and his guitar. He was also the nicest band member to meet and get to know. He was down to earth and respectful. Unless you pissed him off. RIP EDDIE. You are still truly missed and still loved by many
There is no one who could possibly convince me that there's any better name for the song than "Eruption." Eddie is positively *volcanic* Even though he'd long since gotten far beyond the point of wearing his fingers down to nubs (his calluses must have calluses on their calluses on top of calluses), I'd swear my own fingers bleed in sympathy for his. Most of Eddies' guitars (including the one you see in this video) were built by his own two hands & they must have gone to heaven with him...He certainly played the hell *out* of them.
Also, Terry Kath from Chicago. Jimmy Hendrix was a big fan of Terry Kath. Kath died in 1978. If you decide to check him out, look for earlier works like Chicago, "Make Me Smile" or "Beginnings"
What you said is what all guitarists were saying when they heard EVH - he changed everything on the electric guitar. He didn't raise the bar he put the electric guitar in another Galaxy!! He had it all - chops, melody, timing, CREATIVITY, and on and on and on!!! On top of that, Van Halen had the best Rock Music Ever!!! It was weird how every song of Van Halen's is a BANGER! Greatest Guitarist, Greatest Front-Man, Best Back Ground Vocals (Thanks to Bassist Michael Anthony's high range from hell), and incredible drumming. There will never be a band like THE MIGHTY VAN HALEN!!!!
He was 13 days older than me. So, I can truly say I saw him from the beginning. I never saw anything even close to this performance then, and still not today!!
With regards to rock and roll concerts, I hit the ground running when Van Halen was the first rock concert I ever attended back in 1980 at the Boston Garden when I was just 14 years old.
I will never get tired of hearing Edward play
There's only one Eddie Van Halen, there's no one else, Eddie Van Halen is simply above the rest, he's on another level man! I'm still amazed after all these years!

Exactly
Totally agree.
"His rhythm work gets overlooked" True.
It’s Eddie
Eddie Van Halen is the best ever. Glad I seen the man live many times. Great reaction to the greatest guitar player ever.
Got to see them in concert twice. Feel so fortunate. Eddie didn't play the guitar... he toy'd with it.. he could do whatever he wanted with it
Mind blowing badd ass ... RIP King Edward Van Halen...
"his playing have feeling".....well said my friend
I’ve seen him make the guitar talk , he’s awesome, there will never be another Eddie VanHalen
Like Jimi Hendrix. Two guitarist that will never be topped
Eddie's the God of guitar and key board. He was an innovative genius.
Eddie was and is THE GOAT, his rethym playing was just as good as his solo playing, like I said THE GOAT
Agreed! I love that you said "THE GOAT" twice 😊 needs to be said at least twice!! 👍
top 3 guitar players of all time. R. I. P. EDDIE
I was at the Diver Down tour in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania on October 19th, 1982. It was awesome and his guitar playing or performing was something I will never forget.
I was there too.
Eddie is spitting bars on his guitar that he made..Best ever
Bless you brother!! Bless you and please love and respect and enjoy Van Halen with your extended family. Thank you uploader!! Bless you man!!
Should have seen him live. Wow evh definitely one of the best evef
Eddie loved playing as much as we loved watching and listening. Bro he made all of our jaws drop. R.I.P EVH.
Good reply to the greatest guitar player EVER
I was blessed to have witnessed his alchemy live on the 1984 Tour when I was 16. Now imagine hearing everything he's doing here, but at concert level volume! Eddie was a level of skill and talent and innovation that will not be matched ever again in this lifetime.
I’m sad I missed the 80’s concert scene.
There are many number 1 guitar 🎸 players. They have different sounds from each other. That's what makes them all great ❤
I was very fortunate to have seen Van Halen play on 4 occasions live.
Eddie loved to play and it shows. I will forever grateful that I was able to see him play live.
Man had no enemies only Love and respect
Absolutely great! Simply amazing. Thank you Harri
The best!! RIP Eddie and Neil! 😢😊
Eddie was a fan of the lead guitarist of the group Pantera,Dime Bag Darrell Abbott. When Dime passed away Eddie put one of his( Eddies) guitars in the coffin with him.
He actually never knew DBD. Someone told him about his shooting and reached out.
Dimebag was a huge EVH fan
Not just a guitar. The actual frankenstrat.
@@jerrymiller2891 bullshit, the Frankenstrat is in the Smithsonian
@@clayweddle2936 it was the actual guitar he recorded van halen 2 with.
THE most amazing Van Halen track is “I’m the One.” Trust me on this. 😉
Most of Fair Warning is genius guitar playing
Gonna throw in "Loss of Control" from the Women and Children First album as an honorable mention.
Nice review Harry , enjoyed your comments !!! ✔️
2 of my favorite solo preformances.... this one and John Bonham 'Moby Dick live'. Love to see your react to that one!
My hero.. ❤
He’s in my Top 5 FAV guitarists
Rest In Peace Eddie. Thank you for your gift of music
Rest In Peace my King. You were the greatest
Eddie van Halen is in at #1 of top 20 or more guitar players in history and all are amazing. R-n-peace Eddie van Halen.
The best ever!❤
Good reaction, people get stuck in the same music, there are fifty kinds off music that are awesome, Congrats.
I truly enjoy seeing someone react to the first time they listen to Edward's solo. It really is mind blowing. Saw them live 4 times and their music got me through my teens. RIP EDWARD! 😰🤩
He was a great dude!
RIP Eddie. The best. He made the guitar talk in so many languages. Do a reaction to Roy Clark.
Eddie was self-taught. He worked extremely hard to learn the guitar himself. No lessons or anything. Just himself and his guitar. He was also the nicest band member to meet and get to know. He was down to earth and respectful. Unless you pissed him off. RIP EDDIE. You are still truly missed and still loved by many
There is no one who could possibly convince me that there's any better name for the song than "Eruption." Eddie is positively *volcanic*
Even though he'd long since gotten far beyond the point of wearing his fingers down to nubs (his calluses must have calluses on their calluses on top of calluses), I'd swear my own fingers bleed in sympathy for his.
The greatest of all time.
Yes sir!! Rest in peace Eddie!!😥
With regards to rock and roll concerts, I hit the ground running when Van Halen was the first rock concert I ever attended back in 1980 at the Boston Garden when I was just 14 years old.
Many tried to copy him for better or worse but EVH was a natural and he’s a legend for the ages.
RIP ❤️❤️❤️
Just wow
100% in the discussion for the greatest of all time. He was the Guitar King
Eddie had been playing in Geramany, with a guitar, In the early to mid 70s! Along with his brother Alex Van Halen.
