Love how Sammy comes across as a guy you'd like to hang out at the bar and have a beer with. Wasn't a fan of your list of songs though. But I'm not going to argue or write my own. Most of the songs I'd list are probably the well-known releases we've all heard before.

I've played guitar since 1972 my favorite band is actually Rush (yeah , been a tough year) but still Eddie was my favorite guitarist and my single greatest influence . The totally influenced the sound and style of every player after him. Thank you for a video well done !!
Eddie Van Halen is in my opinion, the greatest rock and roll guitarist of all time. I am also a big fan of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. They would be my top 3 but ranking them is next to impossible. Eddie was the innovator and the sheer volume of his work is astounding. Eddie was a rock star with a work ethic. The time and work Eddie put into his craft shined through. The thing about EVH is that his sound and tone is entirely his own. No one can sound exactly like EVH. Many have tried....some have come close...but no one has been able to exactly cop EVH's tone....which came from his heart, his soul, and his fingers. RIP -G.O.A.T. - Edward Van Halen.
And he kept on inventing incredible licks that sounded so great ( I always thought I was so dumb , he was the Elon musk the Einstein of rock guitar and also a great songwriter, now that you see only once in a hundred years !) And we were there and saw it happen ! 🌷🌷🌷
Majik, you are absolutely right here. I recall Steve Vai talking about the first time he heard Eruption, and being blown away by how he maintained that tone. Vai went on to do his own thing, of course, experimenting with different sounds etc. I think they are both up there with individuality, creativity, and just in the same league of musicians who don't give a crap about how they sell themselves. Zappa and Satriani were the same (Vai fitted in perfectly). They just did their own flavour of thing, and EVH was the ultimate leader in this. All of them, in my opinion, are way beyond any Rolling Stone Greatest poll. They are in a stratosphere of their own.
Saw a vid recently where he's giving some reporter a tour of the 5150 studio and he tells a story wherein he mentions playing a steel string guitar with nylon strings on it and the reporter said, "and you're not supposed to do that." Eddie says, "Sure you are. It's called music theory not music fact. Do whatever the hell you want."
@@ClifHaley yup! I've heard him say it multiple times in multiple ways. He was very against going 100% by the book. In that same interview he even talks about having to meet with his kids principal at school to tell him he didnt want Wolfgang to learn everything by the book and be criticised for thinking outside of the box. He was very adamant about that. Victor Wooten has also said "music theory is a tool.. but like a tool it should be in the trunk until we need it". No one jams out to your knowledge and your theory everyone jams out to your feel and your groove.
Eddie was classically trained. That may have given him framework. But, what he did was to turn it on its head to give the world something unusually exciting.
I’ll never understand why the Hagar version of Van Halen isn’t celebrated more. What inspired music they created together. Musically. Lyrically. You can tell that Sammy and Eddie had a deep deep connection.

Bob, I began playing in 1980. I studied Ed for almost 40 yrs. I cannot hear or look at Ed playing without tearing up now. Indeed part of me died on Oct. 6, 2020.

2020 sucks. Eddie was the music of my life. He made the soundtrack of my formative years. I saw Van Halen with every tour with Sammy except the reunion in '04 twice! It was just awesome! I will never forget Eddie and his music. I am heartbroken. These last few years have been hard on our heroes, Bowie, Petty, Peart, and now Van Halen. It is just so very sad, we love you Eddie! RIP
Man I love that Sammy and Eddie were patching things up at the end. They accomplished so much together and with the other bandmates, I think we all felt a little pain that they weren’t still friends. So rest in peace Eddie, Your music will live on, and all the fans can be grateful that their friendship ended on a high note!!
Brought tears to my eyes, it’s weird that the impact of Eddies passing is just starting to dawn on me, over here in the Uk VH didn’t seem to be massively popular but for me simply out of this world especially playing his guitar at the speed of the millennium falcon - yahoo! RIP Edward. X
*THE TIME I MET VAN HALEN IN '79!* It was a Friday night...August 16th, 1979. I was 15 years old at the time. A couple of friends of mine and I had decided to go to the newly opened Megamall, *The Holyoke Mall at Ingleside,* in Holyoke Massachusetts to see the _incredible new movie about _*_The Who..._* *...The Kids Are Alright.* _That same Friday night..._ *...Van Halen* were hanging out in a hotel in Springfield Massachusetts because they were scheduled to play at *the Springfield Civic Center* the following night, Saturday, August 17th. So...having the night off with nothing to do...they heard about a new Megamall just a few miles up the road in nearby Holyoke Massachusetts called, *The Holyoke Mall at Ingleside,* that had a large indoor theater which was showing a new movie that they had been eager to see...the new *_Who movie,_** The Kids Are Alright* ...and so *Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony* and a couple of their crew members... ( *_David Lee Roth_*_ was not with them as he chose to stay at the hotel_ ) decided to go check it out. My friends and I arrived early, bought our movie tickets, then decided to walk around the mall until showtime. As we were walking through the mall, my friend Kevin said to us, _"HEY! That was Van Halen!"_ To which I responded, _"What?? No way! Are you sure"_ ...and he said, _"Yes...I'm pretty certain."_ _"Hey, let's go to the record store and look at their photos."_ So, we _ran_ to the record store, looked at the album and said, _"IT IS THEM!!!"_ So we ran to another store to buy a paper pad and pen because we wanted to get their autograph, but we didn't have anything to use. Afterall...this _was_ 1979... *_lonnng before smartphones!_* So now that we had something to use for getting an autograph, we had to go back and find them before they left the mall. _We were frantic!_ Running through the mall like maniacs...we ran _the wrong way_ up the escalator! Then as we got to the top, we saw two other kids running as well, and they excitedly shouted to us, _"Did you guys see Van Halen too?"_ _"Yes! We're trying to catch up to them to get their autograph!"_ So we finally caught up with them and gushing...we asked them for their autograph...to which they gladly complied. We were surprised that no one else recognized them...but looking back, I realize that they had only two albums out at the time, and were not yet the household name and faces that they are now. Feeling pretty satisfied with our amazing good luck, we turned our attention to getting to the movie theater. We sat in our seats and talked all about our amazing experience as we waited for the movie to begin. Then...as we were waiting...to our _utter amazement,_ into the movie theater walk none other than *_the Van Halen entourage!_* ...and they sat down four rows behind us! We did not want to bother them...so we just enjoyed the movie...and all the more because it was with the satisfaction of knowing that we had watched *The Kids Are Alright* with *_Van Halen!_*

There was a time in my life when I felt that Eddie (through his music) was my only friend. He got me through some awful times, times that I know I wouldn't have made it through without him. That man's playing/music was a gift to the world. His death is a loss that tears through my guts, and has left me numb. The world is a darker place without him......

If you weren’t alive at the time, it’s impossible for you to fully appreciate what Eddie did with the guitar. His playing was from another planet!! There were of course, fine players out there - but he blew all of our minds! Everyone was confused... they were saying things like: “is that a synthesizer?? Is he using computers?? What are those sounds!?! How is he doing that?!?!” Im grateful I was there. Seeing them live (and up close) in 1979 was an experience that changed my world. A 24 yr old Eddie made it look effortless - and best of all... he was grinning the whole darn time!!
Definitely. Thats the thing about Eddie - many guitarists may have surpassed him on a technical level, but it's his playing and innovation that influenced so many of those same guys to take the evolution of playing to new levels. He raised the bar from Hendrix and then set it high. And not only did he set the bar high he kept evolving and innovating both as a musician and guitarist.
Eddie had it all! Rockstar looks, infectious smile, unique style, great tone, amazing riffs, and showmanship. I got a speeding ticket from cranking Eruption going to college! In ‘78 when I first heard Van Halen they blew my mind. Being a guitarist I knew it was guitar but from another planet! Hendrix was ahead of his time but it took awhile for people to get him. Eddie was ahead but people got him and ran quickly over his fire and intensity! I pray we get to hear some new tracks come out that we’re not not released or for a new album. God rest the king of classic rock guitar!!!
I always loved the intro to “Pretty Woman”. It sounded so different-almost humorously demented and warped before launching into this really beautiful song.
Intruder - I’ve also always loved it. It has an ominous sound because they use diminished tones. I used to get annoyed at mainstream rock stations because they would play the single version which omitted Intruder. I learned to just keep the FM dial on the album rock station instead!
As a huge EVH fan myself, I was reluctant to watch another self serving 'tribute' to Ed. Its really hard watching someone try and promote THEIR brand with somebody else's passing. Especially when that someone means a lot to me. So thankfully and later relieved I clicked your video. I don't comment much on YT but I felt the need to say thank you for this. Eddie, the musician AND human being are celebrated. Very well done!
Dude, im 60 been awed by EVH my entire life, I get the same feelings from the band, made me feel like I could take on anything after listening. RIP Eddie. We only cease to exist when we are forgotten, Eddie will live as long as the fans live. Hope to meet you some time.
Same here Greg; the timing could not have been more ideal. I was turning 10 in 79', just sort of figuring out my musical tastes which were Kiss, Eagles, Cheap, Trick thanks to older cousins, and not understanding disco so much. Along comes VH and as they evolved so did my musical knowledge and appreciation. I was a Halen/Roth guy but quickly loved Hager just as much.
The loss of Eddie Van Halen isn’t unlike the loss of a Beethoven, composer and musician that gave the world something we’d never heard..Eruption was his killer introduction blowing minds of our generation that changed sound of rock music and gave a new meaning to the word “shredding” all the while, with that grin..... RIP Eddie💔💔💔🙏🏻🙏🏻🙏🏻 And thank you Sammy you always speak from the heart and are 💯 % authentic. You were, are and forever will be brothers.
He’s right up there with Beethoven and Mozart. Only time will tell who’ll stand the test of time. I have a feeling 300 years from now his music will still echo. I hope in “remastered” fashion (all Sammy era CDs).

The absolute best tribute I’ve seen yet about Eddie. It’s difficult to imagine this world without him, but here we are. His music and passion will live forever. They’ll be talking about Eddie in the future like we talk about Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Wagner.

Eddie was the biggest musical hero for me, my icon. Usually a celebrity passes and I may think “that’s too bad, sad”etc. EVH passing broke my heart, I teared up and still get emotional. His music was “my” music, he created the tribe I joined and belonged with. I miss him, music is lesser without him but still miles better because he was here to grace us.
I grew up and have built so many memories with EVH and the fellas....while in the USMC we partied with them at the US Festival in Cali in 83, and I was blessed enough to see them 5 other times. Damn, never knew him but it is like I lost a family member. I can never thank you enough for the great times and awesome memories Eddie. RIP and prayers to his family and fans .
I'm so happy Sammy and Eddie made up. That it took Eddie 16 years to let go of whatever hurt he felt Sammy had done to him proves this: the bigger the love, the bigger the sense of betrayal and disappointment. Eddie and Sammy were musical soul mates and best friends (Dave NEVER had that relationship with Eddie. Ever. Because of Roth, Eddie wanted to quit the band and join Kiss) who'd co-created some of the best music of their careers in the span of those ten years (1986 -1996 and I am saying this as a VH who has happily supported all incarnations of the band), with Eddie's songwriting abilities at their absolute peak. You could feel the love and comradery on stage, like the band was a family. The perpetual smile on Eddie's face said it all.
1985 marked Sammys addition to the band? Whoa, that us the same year the NES came out and helped saved video games! Stars Must have been aligning that year
Such a wonderful video. I've watched it a few times and cry each time. No one has touched my musical heart and soul like Edward did. Since hearing his music for the first time when I was 11 in 1981... his music has been an intrical part of my life. Through the good times and the bad Edwards Music and every version of Van Halen has been such an important part of my life. My heart still hurts badly knowing he's gone. Seems so strange to me since I never met the man and only know him through the music. Rest in peace you tone chasing genius.
Amazing tribute, thank you for this video. So many don't realize the sheer genius of EVH and the fact he was a complete MUSICIAN. There will never be another, I'm so blessed and thankful to grow up with his music and not only listening to it, but understanding his talent and how much he has contributed to the music world. I was always hoping that Eddie and Sammy would get back and continue their magic with music and words. It is a shame that would neve4r happen. I think Eddie new what was going on with him, and he wanted to spend his last days with his son making and performing music with Wolfie to pass on to him whatever Wolfie was ready to grasp of Eddie's musical genius. We lost a real peacemaker of this world. RIP Eddie ... we ALL miss you already!!
I was always hoping Eddie and Dave would get back together...until they did...Dave was definitely a weak link. It boggled my mind how the most bad-ass singer in history, could just give up singing for clown school.

I was fortunate to be able to see VanHalen on their 1st world tour in 1978. They opened for Black Sabbath, blew them off the stage. I remember the 1st time I heard VanHalen when I was 15. I was at a party, my buddy put on their debut album, Running with the Devil came on. Everyone at the party just stopped and listened. We could not believe what we were hearing, listened to the entire album straight through. Went out next day and bought it, listened to it over and over. Still my favorite album of all VanHalen's catalog. Eddie will truly be missed, but will inspire many generations of guitarists for years to come. My son now has the concert t-shirt from the 1978 world tour, he wears it proudly.
Van Halen was just one of those albums, but the second you dropped the needle you thought, okay, this is different. This changes everything, and Ed's playing was that very reason.
I tried to watch this when it was first posted. I couldnt do it. Only now, over a year later can i watch it without breaking down over somebody i never knew. Its amazing how music can touch somebody. I bought my first guitar at 42 as my tribute to evh......the greatest musician ever.
I am 32 years old. Born in 88 with a mom who was into rock and roll since the late 60’s and 70’s, I literally grew up dancing around the house with her to Van Halen. DLR or SH? Don’t matter it’s about EVH. This made me cry. It’s like the soundtrack to growing up is gone. For Christ’s sake, being a kid in the 90’s and how big the Power Rangers was, to hear Dreams in the MMPR Movie just made me love this band even more. Especially since EVH clearly inspired the Power Ranger’s riff in the first place. I always wanted to see them live, I’ll have to wait a while longer. Thank you Eddie, Rest In Peace.
I've been anticipating this tribute since I heard the news, cause I know you'd do him justice. EVH is the reason I learned to play guitar. in 84 at 9 years old, watching the Jump video, when Eddie broke into that guitar solo with that infectious "Look-at-how-much-fun-this-is/I'm-having" smile, my fate was sealed then. It took a few years until I got to high school where I could finally take a beginner guitar course as a credit to my diploma, since my parents would never pay for guitar lessons, but I finally started to learn and then self taught myself with endless guitar magazines. Worked a summer job at 17 to buy my first guitar(which I still have to this day 29 years later, along with many others I've picked up along the way) and it's been a life long passion that still infects me to this day. Thank you Eddie Van Halen for sharing your passion for music and guitar with the world. In the pay-it-forward scheme of things, EVH paid more forward then he realized and each year there is always a new crop of kids discovering VH for the first time and freaking out "WHAT IS THIS?!" in the best possible way and developing a passion for guitar. RIP EVH
I'm not sure if this is for everyone else, but it kinda feels like Eddie isn't dead. For one, it's almost impossible to believe and, two, his soul and music and overall innovation lives on so strong that everyone still talks about it and plays the songs and dives into analysing him and his playing! 5150 is certainly an incredible composition, but the hardest song for anyone to play but Ed is I'm the One. NO ONE can emulate Ed's rhythm on this track. NOT.ONE.PERSON.EVER.

I am a guitar player, so I also always remember the actual innovation and inventions that Eddie changed the guitar world with. Not just his technique and musicianship was innovative. A lot of people who dont play dont realize his important gear invention contributions. He was a lot like Les Paul in this way, probably why they were such good friends
Absolutely hit the nail on the head regarding how Eddie’s playing can just snap you out of your reality into a completely different, uplifting, positive space. Conveyed so much emotion with his playing it’s almost like having an extra vocalist. The songs you pointed to when mentioning this are basically all the ones that give me goosebumps to this day. There will be a certain part of the songs where everything is just right, absolutely perfect and his guitar playing just takes it to the next level and makes it pure magic. RIP Eddie.
Rest in Peace Eddie, you will be missed but never forgotten. VH changed lives and if you grew up in the late 70's and 80's you know what I mean. Eddie was magic on the guitar and in my opinion one of the very best. I'm proud to say I grew up in the best times ever and I will never stop listening to VH, for as long as I'm alive. I never sided with EVH on his feud with band mates but he was the true genius as well as reason to throw down hard earned cash to see/hear. I remember hearing Eruption & You Really Got Me in 78 although I don’t know much I knew this guy was onto something newer & bigger.
I've been going to VH shows since '79, and yea, you cannot be down listening to Eddie play, seeing them live was the most amazing party ever. Eddie's music & innovations will live forever, and I'm grateful to have lived during a time when a musical genius shared the planet with us.

The point made here, about how Eddie's playing left people in awe and an almost disbelief by what they were hearing. People are lifted by the energy and pure soul coming from his fingers. There's a popular RUclips trend of Eddie Van Halen guitar solo reactions, of people's first time ever hearing him play. And most reactions are from all walks of life. Elderly, the very young, hip hop fans, you name it. And they ALL are stunned. I love watching their faces, because it reminds of MY first time listening to EVH, when I was very young.
Gotta go with "Dont' Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" as Eddie's masterpiece... it never fails to raise the hackles, from the menacing beginning to the guitar solos that blow my mind. o.O

I’m so glad Van Halen’s music was during my lifetime. One thing that blows my mind is Eddie was only 22 when VH 1 was recorded. I told a couple of my friends who aren’t into music as much as I am, EVH is to guitar playing what Michael Jordan is to basketball.
I remember where I was in 1984 when I heard the album 1984. My life was changed and I became obsessed with the guitar. I was 9 years old and was at my cousin's house in her room. I was fascinated by the song 1984 but when the guitar cranked in Jump, I freaked out. I started jumping up and down with excitement. I didn't know what else to do but jump up and down. After I heard the whole album, I tried to explain to my parents what I heard. They didn't have a clue what I was talking about nor did they really care, I think. When we got Mtv, I showed my mom. I said "I want to play like that!" She just looked at me and said "That's nice". After that when she went downtown to shop, I would go to the music store and stare at the guitars and amps. My mom would have to drag me out of there because I was obsessed. I probably talked about the guitar all the way home. One day, I finally got to play an electric. The guy said "You want to play one?" and he got it down, plugged it into an amp, hit the overdrive channel and turned the volume up. I think the two guys got a kick out of seeing this little kid drool over the guitar. My mom was not happy when she came to get me and saw me sitting in a practice room with this guitar. It would be four more years till my parents would let me take lessons.
Great vid man! I wouldn't be who I am today without EVH. Through good and bad thick and thin Van Halen was the soundtrack of my life. Great take on one of the greatest bands of all time!!

Eddie Van Halen was the greatest guitarist that ever lived. I will die on that hill. He is quite literally the reason I am a guitarist. Me and millions of others.
I can't explain it but even though I was never a huge Van Halen fan, hearing of his passing hit me really hard. I think it's because it really is an end of an era. Eddie Van Halen's impact on music is vast and he will be always remembered as one of the all time greatest!
Thank you so much for this beautiful and perfectly fitting tribute to Eddie. He was transcendent. He touched my life and inspired me in ways no other person has. I never met him or got to thank him personally for all the joy he brought to my life by sharing his talent with us. I haven’t been able to find the words for how his passing has affected me. So.. A friend of mine saw Eddie on the street drinking a Starbucks coffee before a show in my hometown and asked for a picture. Problem was his phone had no memory left. So Eddie asks for the phone, asks him if theirs any pictures he doesn't need then takes a selfie with him.

It wasn't jst Eddie's phenomenal playing. It was that damn sound. The first time I heard him hit a power chord and all those harmonic overtones went straight down to my soul and never left. Kudos to you on this superb tribute. I've only been able to watch a few of your vids so far, but you impress me more each time I do. I don't think you play, yet you have the sensibilities and tastes of a good musician, which is a rare and special thing. I've played guitar since 1972 my favorite band is actually Rush (yeah , been a tough year) but still Eddie was my favorite guitarist and my single greatest influence . I was born in the late 1950's. Eddie was unbelievable, and for me as a lover of all genre's of music....Eddie was and is the best guitarist....ever!
Eddie Van Halen is in my opinion, the greatest rock and roll guitarist of all time. I am also a big fan of Joe Satriani and Steve Vai. They would be my top 3 but ranking them is next to impossible. Eddie was the innovator and the sheer volume of his work is astounding. Eddie was a rock star with a work ethic. The time and work Eddie put into his craft shined through. The thing about EVH is that his sound and tone is entirely his own. No one can sound exactly like EVH. Many have tried....some have come close...but no one has been able to exactly cop EVH's tone....which came from his heart, his soul, and his fingers.

Majik, you are absolutely right here. I recall Steve Vai talking about the first time he heard Eruption, and being blown away by how he maintained that tone. Vai went on to do his own thing, of course, experimenting with different sounds etc. I think they are both up there with individuality, creativity, and just in the same league of musicians who don't give a crap about how they sell themselves. Zappa and Satriani were the same (Vai fitted in perfectly). They just did their own flavour of thing, and EVH was the ultimate leader in this. All of them, in my opinion, are way beyond any Rolling Stone Greatest poll. They are in a stratosphere of their own.

Saw a vid recently where he's giving some reporter a tour of the 5150 studio and he tells a story wherein he mentions playing a steel string guitar with nylon strings on it and the reporter said, "and you're not supposed to do that." Eddie says, "Sure you are. It's called music theory not music fact. Do whatever the hell you want."
@@ClifHaley yup! I've heard him say it multiple times in multiple ways. He was very against going 100% by the book. In that same interview he even talks about having to meet with his kids principal at school to tell him he didnt want Wolfgang to learn everything by the book and be criticised for thinking outside of the box. He was very adamant about that.
Victor Wooten has also said "music theory is a tool.. but like a tool it should be in the trunk until we need it".

Bob, I began playing in 1980. I studied Ed for almost 40 yrs. I cannot hear or look at Ed playing without tearing up now. Indeed part of me died on Oct. 6, 2020.

2020 sucks. Eddie was the music of my life. He made the soundtrack of my formative years. I saw Van Halen with every tour with Sammy except the reunion in '04 twice! It was just awesome! I will never forget Eddie and his music. I am heartbroken. These last few years have been hard on our heroes, Bowie, Petty, Peart, and now Van Halen. It is just so very sad, we love you Eddie! RIP
Man I love that Sammy and Eddie were patching things up at the end. They accomplished so much together and with the other bandmates, I think we all felt a little pain that they weren’t still friends. So rest in peace Eddie, Your music will live on, and all the fans can be grateful that their friendship ended on a high note!!

*THE TIME I MET VAN HALEN IN '79!*
It was a Friday night...August 16th, 1979.
I was 15 years old at the time.
A couple of friends of mine and I had decided to go to the newly opened Megamall,
*The Holyoke Mall at Ingleside,*
in Holyoke Massachusetts to see the _incredible new movie about _*_The Who..._*
*...The Kids Are Alright.*
_That same Friday night..._
*...Van Halen* were hanging out in a hotel in Springfield Massachusetts because they were scheduled to play at *the Springfield Civic Center* the following night, Saturday, August 17th. So...having the night off with nothing to do...they heard about a new Megamall just a few miles up the road in nearby Holyoke Massachusetts called, *The Holyoke Mall at Ingleside,* that had a large indoor theater which was showing a new movie that they had been eager to see...the new *_Who movie,_** The Kids Are Alright* ...and so *Eddie Van Halen, Alex Van Halen, Michael Anthony* and a couple of their crew members...
( *_David Lee Roth_*_ was not with them as he chose to stay at the hotel_ )
decided to go check it out.
My friends and I arrived early, bought our movie tickets, then decided to walk around the mall until showtime. As we were walking through the mall, my friend Kevin said to us,
_"HEY! That was Van Halen!"_
To which I responded,
_"What?? No way! Are you sure"_
...and he said, _"Yes...I'm pretty certain."_
_"Hey, let's go to the record store and look at their photos."_
So, we _ran_ to the record store, looked at the album and said,
_"IT IS THEM!!!"_
So we ran to another store to buy a paper pad and pen because we wanted to get their autograph, but we didn't have anything to use. Afterall...this _was_ 1979... *_lonnng before smartphones!_*
So now that we had something to use for getting an autograph, we had to go back and find them before they left the mall. _We were frantic!_ Running through the mall like maniacs...we ran _the wrong way_ up the escalator! Then as we got to the top, we saw two other kids running as well, and they excitedly shouted to us,
_"Did you guys see Van Halen too?"_
_"Yes! We're trying to catch up to them to get their autograph!"_
So we finally caught up with them and gushing...we asked them for their autograph...to which they gladly complied.
We were surprised that no one else recognized them...but looking back, I realize that they had only two albums out at the time, and were not yet the household name and faces that they are now.
Feeling pretty satisfied with our amazing good luck, we turned our attention to getting to the movie theater. We sat in our seats and talked all about our amazing experience as we waited for the movie to begin. Then...as we were waiting...to our _utter amazement,_ into the movie theater walk none other than *_the Van Halen entourage!_* ...and they sat down four rows behind us! We did not want to bother them...so we just enjoyed the movie...and all the more because it was with the satisfaction of knowing that we had watched *The Kids Are Alright* with *_Van Halen!_*

There was a time in my life when I felt that Eddie (through his music) was my only friend. He got me through some awful times, times that I know I wouldn't have made it through without him. That man's playing/music was a gift to the world. His death is a loss that tears through my guts, and has left me numb. The world is a darker place without him......

If you weren’t alive at the time, it’s impossible for you to fully appreciate what Eddie did with the guitar. His playing was from another planet!! There were of course, fine players out there - but he blew all of our minds! Everyone was confused... they were saying things like: “is that a synthesizer?? Is he using computers?? What are those sounds!?! How is he doing that?!?!” Im grateful I was there. Seeing them live (and up close) in 1979 was an experience that changed my world. A 24 yr old Eddie made it look effortless - and best of all... he was grinning the whole darn time!!
Definitely. Thats the thing about Eddie - many guitarists may have surpassed him on a technical level, but it's his playing and innovation that influenced so many of those same guys to take the evolution of playing to new levels. He raised the bar from Hendrix and then set it high. And not only did he set the bar high he kept evolving and innovating both as a musician and guitarist.

Eddie had it all! Rockstar looks, infectious smile, unique style, great tone, amazing riffs, and showmanship. I got a speeding ticket from cranking Eruption going to college! In ‘78 when I first heard Van Halen they blew my mind. Being a guitarist I knew it was guitar but from another planet! Hendrix was ahead of his time but it took awhile for people to get him. Eddie was ahead but people got him and ran quickly over his fire and intensity! I pray we get to hear some new tracks come out that we’re not not released or for a new album. God rest the king of classic rock guitar!!!

I always loved the intro to “Pretty Woman”. It sounded so different-almost humorously demented and warped before launching into this really beautiful song.
Intruder - I’ve also always loved it. It has an ominous sound because they use diminished tones. I used to get annoyed at mainstream rock stations because they would play the single version which omitted Intruder. I learned to just keep the FM dial on the album rock station instead!
An empty beer can used as a slide made for the otherworldly tones on “Intruder”...just amazing .

Same here Greg; the timing could not have been more ideal. I was turning 10 in 79', just sort of figuring out my musical tastes which were Kiss, Eagles, Cheap, Trick thanks to older cousins, and not understanding disco so much. Along comes VH and as they evolved so did my musical knowledge and appreciation. I was a Halen/Roth guy but quickly loved Hager just as much.

The absolute best tribute I’ve seen yet about Eddie. It’s difficult to imagine this world without him, but here we are. His music and passion will live forever. They’ll be talking about Eddie in the future like we talk about Beethoven, Bach, Mozart and Wagner.

Eddie was the biggest musical hero for me, my icon. Usually a celebrity passes and I may think “that’s too bad, sad”etc. EVH passing broke my heart, I teared up and still get emotional. His music was “my” music, he created the tribe I joined and belonged with. I miss him, music is lesser without him but still miles better because he was here to grace us.
Eddie was the reason I picked up the guitar. Thank you Professor for doing this .

I grew up and have built so many memories with EVH and the fellas....while in the USMC we partied with them at the US Festival in Cali in 83, and I was blessed enough to see them 5 other times. Damn, never knew him but it is like I lost a family member. I can never thank you enough for the great times and awesome memories Eddie. RIP and prayers to his family and fans .
I'm so happy Sammy and Eddie made up. That it took Eddie 16 years to let go of whatever hurt he felt Sammy had done to him proves this: the bigger the love, the bigger the sense of betrayal and disappointment. Eddie and Sammy were musical soul mates and best friends (Dave NEVER had that relationship with Eddie. Ever. Because of Roth, Eddie wanted to quit the band and join Kiss) who'd co-created some of the best music of their careers in the span of those ten years (1986 -1996 and I am saying this as a VH who has happily supported all incarnations of the band), with Eddie's songwriting abilities at their absolute peak. You could feel the love and comradery on stage, like the band was a family. The perpetual smile on Eddie's face said it all.

Such a wonderful video. I've watched it a few times and cry each time. No one has touched my musical heart and soul like Edward did. Since hearing his music for the first time when I was 11 in 1981... his music has been an intrical part of my life. Through the good times and the bad Edwards Music and every version of Van Halen has been such an important part of my life. My heart still hurts badly knowing he's gone. Amazing tribute, thank you for this video. So many don't realize the sheer genius of EVH and the fact he was a complete MUSICIAN. There will never be another, I'm so blessed and thankful to grow up with his music and not only listening to it, but understanding his talent and how much he has contributed to the music world. His legacy will live on through his children and fans. I pray my children admire him as much as I have and always will. Xo God Bless

I was always hoping that Eddie and Sammy would get back and continue their magic with music and words. It is a shame that would neve4r happen. I think Eddie new what was going on with him, and he wanted to spend his last days with his son making and performing music with Wolfie to pass on to him whatever Wolfie was ready to grasp of Eddie's musical genius. We lost a real peacemaker of this world. RIP Eddie ... we ALL miss you already!!
I was always hoping Eddie and Dave would get back together...until they did...Dave was definitely a weak link. It boggled my mind how the most bad-ass singer in history, could just give up singing for clown school.

Weather its Dave or Sammy Van Halen as a band in general was a very gifted group of friends that made it fun. Eddie is a blissful spirit when swinging his axe. And the overall excitement and spirit of the music that brought us together and will continue forever. God speed Brother.
I was fortunate to be able to see VanHalen on their 1st world tour in 1978. They opened for Black Sabbath, blew them off the stage. I remember the 1st time I heard VanHalen when I was 15. I was at a party, my buddy put on their debut album, Running with the Devil came on. Everyone at the party just stopped and listened. We could not believe what we were hearing, listened to the entire album straight through. Went out next day and bought it, listened to it over and over. Still my favorite album of all VanHalen's catalog. Eddie will truly be missed, but will inspire many generations of guitarists for years to come. My son now has the concert t-shirt from the 1978 world tour, he wears it proudly.
Van Halen was just one of those albums, but the second you dropped the needle you thought, okay, this is different. This changes everything, and Ed's playing was that very reason.
The second album cant to be superior to 1st but just different like each other VH album.

I tried to watch this when it was first posted. I couldnt do it. Only now, over a year later can i watch it without breaking down over somebody i never knew. Its amazing how music can touch somebody. I bought my first guitar at 42 as my tribute to evh......the greatest musician ever.

I am 32 years old. Born in 88 with a mom who was into rock and roll since the late 60’s and 70’s, I literally grew up dancing around the house with her to Van Halen. DLR or SH? Don’t matter it’s about EVH. This made me cry. It’s like the soundtrack to growing up is gone. For Christ’s sake, being a kid in the 90’s and how big the Power Rangers was, to hear Dreams in the MMPR Movie just made me love this band even more. Especially since EVH clearly inspired the Power Ranger’s riff in the first place. I always wanted to see them live, I’ll have to wait a while longer. Thank you Eddie, Rest In Peace.
I've been anticipating this tribute since I heard the news, cause I know you'd do him justice. EVH is the reason I learned to play guitar. in 84 at 9 years old, watching the Jump video, when Eddie broke into that guitar solo with that infectious "Look-at-how-much-fun-this-is/I'm-having" smile, my fate was sealed then. It took a few years until I got to high school where I could finally take a beginner guitar course as a credit to my diploma, since my parents would never pay for guitar lessons, but I finally started to learn and then self taught myself with endless guitar magazines. Worked a summer job at 17 to buy my first guitar(which I still have to this day 29 years later, along with many others I've picked up along the way) and it's been a life long passion that still infects me to this day. Thank you Eddie Van Halen for sharing your passion for music and guitar with the world. In the pay-it-forward scheme of things, EVH paid more forward then he realized and each year there is always a new crop of kids discovering VH for the first time and freaking out "WHAT IS THIS?!" in the best possible way and developing a passion for guitar. RIP EVH
I'm not sure if this is for everyone else, but it kinda feels like Eddie isn't dead. For one, it's almost impossible to believe and, two, his soul and music and overall innovation lives on so strong that everyone still talks about it and plays the songs and dives into analysing him and his playing! I am a guitar player, so I also always remember the actual innovation and inventions that Eddie changed the guitar world with. Not just his technique and musicianship was innovative. A lot of people who dont play dont realize his important gear invention contributions. He was a lot like Les Paul in this way, probably why they were such good friends
Absolutely hit the nail on the head regarding how Eddie’s playing can just snap you out of your reality into a completely different, uplifting, positive space. Conveyed so much emotion with his playing it’s almost like having an extra vocalist. The songs you pointed to when mentioning this are basically all the ones that give me goosebumps to this day. There will be a certain part of the songs where everything is just right, absolutely perfect and his guitar playing just takes it to the next level and makes it pure magic. RIP Eddie.
Rest in Peace Eddie, you will be missed but never forgotten. VH changed lives and if you grew up in the late 70's and 80's you know what I mean. Eddie was magic on the guitar and in my opinion one of the very best. I'm proud to say I grew up in the best times ever and I will never stop listening to VH, for as long as I'm alive. I never sided with EVH on his feud with band mates but he was the true genius as well as reason to throw down hard earned cash to see/hear. I remember hearing Eruption & You Really Got Me in 78 although I don’t know much I knew this guy was onto something newer & bigger.

The point made here, about how Eddie's playing left people in awe and an almost disbelief by what they were hearing. People are lifted by the energy and pure soul coming from his fingers. There's a popular RUclips trend of Eddie Van Halen guitar solo reactions, of people's first time ever hearing him play. And most reactions are from all walks of life. Elderly, the very young, hip hop fans, you name it. And they ALL are stunned. I love watching their faces, because it reminds of MY first time listening to EVH, when I was very young.
Gotta go with "Dont' Tell Me (What Love Can Do)" as Eddie's masterpiece... it never fails to raise the hackles, from the menacing beginning to the guitar solos that blow my mind. o.O
Interestingly enough is the music video shows what happened with the guy who ends up leaving jail by the end of Cant Stop Loving You in its music video.

I’m so glad Van Halen’s music was during my lifetime. One thing that blows my mind is Eddie was only 22 when VH 1 was recorded. I told a couple of my friends who aren’t into music as much as I am, EVH is to guitar playing what Michael Jordan is to basketball.
I remember where I was in 1984 when I heard the album 1984. My life was changed and I became obsessed with the guitar. I was 9 years old and was at my cousin's house in her room. I was fascinated by the song 1984 but when the guitar cranked in Jump, I freaked out. I started jumping up and down with excitement. I didn't know what else to do but jump up and down. After I heard the whole album, I tried to explain to my parents what I heard. They didn't have a clue what I was talking about nor did they really care, I think. When we got Mtv, I showed my mom. I said "I want to play like that!" She just looked at me and said "That's nice". After that when she went downtown to shop, I would go to the music store and stare at the guitars and amps. My mom would have to drag me out of there because I was obsessed. I probably talked about the guitar all the way home. One day, I finally got to play an electric. The guy said "You want to play one?" and he got it down, plugged it into an amp, hit the overdrive channel and turned the volume up. I think the two guys got a kick out of seeing this little kid drool over the guitar. My mom was not happy when she came to get me and saw me sitting in a practice room with this guitar. It would be four more years till my parents would let me take lessons.
Great vid man! I wouldn't be who I am today without EVH. Through good and bad thick and thin Van Halen was the soundtrack of my life. Great take on one of the greatest bands of all time!!

I can't explain it but even though I was never a huge Van Halen fan, hearing of his passing hit me really hard. I think it's because it really is an end of an era. Eddie Van Halen's impact on music is vast and he will be always remembered as one of the all time greatest!

I never met him or got to thank him personally for all the joy he brought to my life by sharing his talent with us. I haven’t been able to find the words for how his passing has affected me. So.. A friend of mine saw Eddie on the street drinking a Starbucks coffee before a show in my hometown and asked for a picture. Problem was his phone had no memory left. So Eddie asks for the phone, asks him if theirs any pictures he doesn't need then takes a selfie with him.

A guitar teacher of mine said, "Anybody can learn to play Eddie Van Halen, but only Eddie could have come up with it." It wasn't jst Eddie's phenomenal playing. It was that damn sound. The first time I heard him hit a power chord and all those harmonic overtones went straight down to my soul and never left.
Kudos to you on this superb tribute. I've only been able to watch a few of your vids so far, but you impress me more each time I do. I don't think you play, yet you have the sensibilities and tastes of a good musician, which is a rare and special thing.
