From the 1984 album, " One Night in Bangkok", British Murray Head, actor and singer raps the verses, while Swedish singer Anders Glenmark sings the chorus. Taken from the musical, Chess, produced by members of Abba, this was a surprise hit in Europe, making it to Number 12 in the UK and Number 3 in Canada and the US. Great reaction Handsome Harri ❤❤ Thanks Robert, great memory. 👏👏 Cheers from Canada ❤❤🇨🇦🇨🇦
This is from the musical Chess Murray was also the original Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar His solo work is worth checking out Especially Say it ain’t so Joe
MURRAY HEAD's two biggest hits come from the same album ('Say It Ain't So', 1975): - "Say It Ain't So Joe" - "Never Even Thought" A must listen! The rhythm is not danceable, but melodramatic. The voice is completely different; the melodic line and the lyrics, emotional. Thank you.
A great memory as a kid in the 80's hearing "The queens we use would not excite you." I laughed so hard at that line. I had no idea it was about chess, I thought it was about those who travel to Bangkok for...certain reasons. And I guess it is about calling out that behavior, but not in comparison to a chess tournament. lol
Bangkok is an awesome city to visit BTW. Particularly if you have a a bit of cash to go high end for food and lodging. You probably don't want to live there though TBF ;o)
This song actually opens Act 2, in the original treatment album of "Chess," which predated the West End premiere by about two years. The American version bowed two years after that, but only survived two months on Broadway. Act 1 is mostly set in Merano, Italy (the "Tirolean spa" from the first verse), where The Russian, after defeating The American, defects. One year later, he has to defend his title in Bangkok, where The American is trying to sabotage him ("Thank God I'm only watching the game, controlling it.") There's a lot more to the musical, but that should at least get you through this song.
This is by far one of the wildest songs I have ever heard. I don't recall ever seeing the Music Video for this track until now. I have sort of a comment/question. Would anyone call his performance on this track as "singing" ? It's obviously not "rap" as least as I know it. He seems to be "talking" his way through the song. Whatever it's called... I enjoyed hearing and now seeing it performed. Great reaction. Take care...
For forty years I thought this song was about the dark, seedy, underground of Thailand. But than two years ago I learned that it was actually about chess. Turns out the video isn't a metaphor.
“Chess” is a classic example of a musical that had great music but a not so great story. I think that’s why it doesn’t get a revival. The closest revival was a live performance of the songs, called “Chess in concert” My favorite song is “Pity the child, #2” Adam Pascal singing. such a good song.
Thailand banned this song because of its off-hand reference to the infamous red light districts and "ladyboys", like when he says "and if you're lucky, your god's a she" but it is the funkiest song. The singer Murray Head, was also famous in Jesus Christ Superstar.
I am hearing this song for 40 years now and I am still not pretty sure if this song is really about Chess! ^^+gg XD I mean: I've been to Bangkok! *rofl
And really @tootz1950 even if you weren’t incredibly wrong as this IS the original, your opinion is only that. Doesn’t make it a fact as though what you say and think matters more than that of anyone else. WOW!! 🤦♀️🤦♀️🤦♀️ You look pretty silly to be honest.
Shows the versatility of the abba guys in this songs creation
Brother of Anthony Head! (Buffy) and loads of great comedic shows and radio shows.. Love Murray, love Anthony!!
Also Rupert Mannion in Ted Lasso! Never thought he'd be an awesome villain.
Love this song!
Best to you, sir!
Good song, especially when heard with a nice audio system.

The album is called “Chess”.
Murray's kid brother Anthony Stewart Head, who would later play the Watcher Rupert Giles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, is playing in the band.
Benny and Bjørn did very good in songwriting still, after ABBA, Loved this song 🤩🤩🥰🥰DK 💌CA 🙏❤
The guys from ABBA did not write this alone. Put some respect on Tim Rice's name! LOL
@toriboy25 I think you just did. 🇨🇦🇨🇦🎶🎶
This is from the musical Chess
Murray was also the original Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar
His solo work is worth checking out
Especially Say it ain’t so Joe
ALW had nothing to do with Chess. It was Bjorn and Benny from Abba and Tim Rice.
@@BeefyMonmy mistake
Harri, the musical itself is about the chess genius Bobby Fischer, who was definitely a personality.
Made by Benny and Bjørn, from ABBA…
AND Tim Rice
I never knew that! Thanks for the info.
As many inuendo's as one may come to, regarding the lyrics, this is actually about a Chess tournament in Bangkok 😊 Love the hat Harri 😊
Yeah Long time I haven´t heard this song! I love it, thank you! 😍😍
I havnt heard this song in a very long time ! Nice !

I once played this for a young Thai lady in Bangkok. She loved it. She had never heard it before
One of my favorites..thanks ❤
Robert - This is yet another new one for me, and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Wonderful submission!

Bjorn & Benny's musical - and I wonder if that's Abba's Rutger on bass?

The 80s. 😂
TWIT
Always loved this song! Thanks ❤️
Believe it or not, the song is about a chess match
But with definite Cold War undertones.
Wrong , its about the ladyboys of Bankok
Hmmm. Hated this song as a kid, but now I kinda like it.

You souls react to the entire soundtrack
Fire 🔥 song Harri ty 🌧✌️
Banned in Bangkok
ABBA wrote this song.
WITH Tim Rice
The chess match is a metaphor for the Cold War.

and the genius is in the double meanings and wordplay.

❤😂😂😂😂
ABBA do rap!
About the ladyboys of Bankok
Where did our 80s and 90s talent go?
They steal talent from our generations!
It's called " sampling".😢
The original is soooo much better. This stinks.
This is the original version…
This IS the original 😂😂
@@sannecarlsen4846 I saw a video of this song in , I think 2009 or 10, and this wasn't it.
