I’d say even £2k is very reasonable given the amazing car that they are, and let’s be honest you’re not going to be replacing a propshaft every year so you could take a grand off really.
I was always advised to budget for round £2k in repairs per year. £190 per month is actually a lot less than you’d pay for an average new car on lease or PCP etc, so I’d say still great value for money really.
I’m fine with the costs for this one Gary. Last service for the Maserati was over £4k!!! 🤪. I suppose I wanted everyone to know that you can’t buy a cheap L322 and then expect to run them on a budget. This one wasn’t cheap to begin with but it’s a fantastic car and forms the backbone of our little fleet. Ed
Land rover is all style over substance for me. Why not get a big dirty land cruiser.
Perhaps I will. Life’s to short. Ed
I've owned four Landcruisers and a Hilux. All broke down and got stuck. No better than the Land Rovers, reliability wise, and worse than them off road.
Love the up load I honestly do but NO NO NO NO NO !!! These cars can be run on a thick shoes string if you know how to do it If you are not savy then dont go near them I at 70 have had every R/Rover appart from L322 onwards since the tender age of 21 I still have my 1971 2 door in a barn !! My L322 is still with me and appart from changing the ignition switch which always fails to a simple toggle switch She runs like a dream Solid Bema engine Nice gearbox "but change oil every 2 years min" Not as Range Rover say for life what a load of bollocks that is She still gives me arounf 29/30 M.P.G. and yes she does to all those out there that will say no way !! She has now done 159 plus K miles only fault as we speak is the internal rear arches could do with a re paint Oh and the head lining is starting to lets say give way not bad but if you are fussy will need re doing and the head lamp wiper/washers dont work I will say no more appart from the best cars I have ever ever owned including some flash items !!!!!!!!!!!!! If you like them and you dont go to R/R/ dealers and your own mechanic is half decent just go and get one but be very very very careful when buying there are many many that have been trashed and over worked just like the classics GOOD LUCK AND WHAT EVER YOU DO HAVE FUN !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I am always amazed at the lengths people go to to defend these cars. I have friends who have owned them and I have driven two variants, a 90s Overfinch V8 which was great fun and a 2011 Vogue. They are incredible comfortable and luxurious, a very nice place to be but mechanical build quality doesn't match the interior opulence. The Vogue was not a particularly reliable beast even when new, while its replacement a 2016 Cayenne has been ultra reliable even if it isn't ultimately as cosseting inside. All cars have maintenence requirements and occasionally go wrong but Porsches, BMWs, Audis etc just do not seem to have quite the level of mechanical failure of Range Rovers. BMW has been in stable ownership since the 50s, Audi the 60s and Mercedes and Lexus forever, Porsche a little more complicated. LandRover, though has been passed through several owners, Rover, British Leyland, BAE, BMW, Ford and now Tata. Most luxury brands are coveted and not traded, why would BMW a hugely successful brand keep Mini and not Land Rover? The answer I once got from a very senior BMW exectuive was that there was a cultural lack of commitment that BMW found difficult to understand. Successive owners have also found it difficult to make a consistent profit with Land Rover and unprofitable companies frequentl;y have quality problems.
I thought it was an honest and balanced appraisal of my genuine running costs. It wasn’t an attempt to defend the RR.
BMW were never interested in Rover group, their intention all along was to steal LR 4 x 4 Technology and asset strip it. I know a lot of people who worked at Longbridge, and people who were in the know.
m an Englishman who has been driving Land Rovers products for over twenty years and can honestly say there is no place more comfortable to be.... ....whilst waiting for a tow truck!"

Hi Colin. They have such a place in our hearts. There’s nothing quite like a LR. Ed
This is why I never entrust any work to a selling agent. It will always be done for the minimal expense.
16K and one key and no parcel shelf really ?????????????? Mine 8k two keys and parcel shelf ??
Is yours the 4.4 Allan? Great value if you only paid £8k. Ed
These things can happen with any car, however if it had been fixed properly the first time by the garage there would have been no issue with the prop shaft. You now have peace of mind knowing that it has been done correctly and it will now last for many years to come, hopefully no more big bills, fingers crossed.
That’s what I’m hoping now that it’s been brought up to a good standard. Ed
Now compare these 190£ to an average depreciation of 1 percent per month of a new Range which now starts at 102,000 £.
There’s no competition in my mind. L322 is something special. A new Defender 110 is another matter completely though! I’m tempted. Ed
I bought a Discovery years ago. The prop shaft started clunking. I was told the garage hadn’t done any pre delivery checks including topping up the oil. Apparently the prop shaft came off the vehicle to save wear. Having the universal joints replaced was cheap. Removing and refitting wasn’t too difficult. In those days they were quality cars and unlike the Range Rover did not rust. Never trust a garage.
yeah but propshaft doesn't break every year so brakes, suspension servis cost is not that bad
Yes it’s always the unknowns. I was just pissed off that the prop shaft failed less than a year after it was supposedly rebuilt buy the dealer that sold it. It was a fault that needed rectified when we bought it.
@@Back_Road_Hero yes i agree , this suck 's and makes brand look bad
The 2k odd of unavoidable cost is pretty good value for money considering you are driving such a great car. I’ve had several LR cars L405, Velar, Freelander 2, Evoque, , also driven most of them including New Disco, Disco 4, Disco Sport. New Defender. But my Favourite by far is the L322 4.4 TD, I had a Westminster I regretted selling and this year I picked up a Vogue SE for 14k, was owned by a enthusiast so well looked after and drives like new with just over 80k on the clock😁 been trouble free so far👍🏼
Yes it’s a reasonable cost to be honest. I just wanted people to know that sometimes you just have to put your hand in your pocket and pay what’s necessary to keep them well maintained. I’m hoping the future costs will be reduced to general maintenance now it has been brought up to a good standard. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero 👍🏼
That propshaft is available a lot cheaper from someone like Advanced (£433) and the same unit as you’d get from main dealer but not in a Land Rover Genuine Parts box. You paid £330 for a cardboard box unfortunately 😢😢😢
Possibly. But these guys will only supply the genuine parts. I’m ok with that but that’s great to know for the next time and for everyone else watching. I’ll pin this comment for the info of others. Cheers. Ed
The prop was repairable for sure. Uj's and bearings would have been a fraction of the price.
@@davelock3166 £60 in parts to repair videos like these are what give range Rovers a bad name and scare people away from owning a great car if your prepared to fix stuff yourselves they aren't that bad to run and maintain
@@samtindall6707 Yes you have to use OEM parts. Chinese stuff is junk and you will be doing the same repair some time later. Fixing things yourself on landies is essential unless you have very deep pockets, but sometimes, I agree, you have to go to a specialist.
Not the same unit as you get from the main dealer. OEM is made by GKN, Advanced shaft made by Allmakes - seemingly still a half decent part though.
You bought a dog man. Paid WAY too much. Ive owned 6 of these with none of these issues. Current one 2012 Westminster overfinch. 80k. Fsh. Bought off insurance for less than quarter what you paid. Fully inspected needs lower ball joint. Pervious rr was same 2011 worked her hard. Little love bar oil changes 3 yrs no issues bar air strut. That one you bought really had a chequered past id say. Or your the unluckiest lad on the planet.
It’s actually a really good car. Our issues were that having spent at the upper end of the price range we’d expect all the car to be sorted. It wasn’t so it went back until they did. I’m fussy about cars and now this one is close to perfect now. Ed
Always a know better in the comments
16k and internal lights not working honestly ??
One surround Allan by the radio. Rest is fine.
I've gotta say that's not massive. And it's a hell of a lot of car for the money. But you have to have your eyes open when buying.
Still isn't putting me off getting one very soon 😁
New sub for you now 👍
Thanks Dan. If you don’t risk anything Then there’s little reward. Just go into ownership with your eyes open. I’d rather pay for repair than depreciation. Ed
Wow 15 years ago I spent over 7 grand modifying my vxr in one year, sounds cheap to me.
Thanks for sharing, a very useful and valuable video. Interesting to hear about the replacement windscreen. I had a 2012 Range Rover Sport that required a replacement windscreen a few years ago due to being hit by a lump of ice . This was carried out by a well known repairer, who snapped the clips and didn't want anything to do with it. I ended up sourcing and replacing myself. I also had the step issue around the 7 year point, which I changed myself before moving the car on for a Giulia Quadrifoglio. Now looking at getting back into a Range Rover as a daily without paying the earth for a newer one.
Hi. You need to check out my QV videos as well!! Running both together covers ALL the bases. Ed
For those that are faint hearted , I bought my L322 in 2020 , was a good car already with 172000km , full service history , had to do front suspension and starter for starters , then front struts , air compressor , both turbos , ac compressor , brake pads , gearbox service and a miriad of other things including egr valves , to date , spent £17500 on it , has to go in for a service , new discs all round , new pads obviously , replace a tyre valve and sensor , terrain response switch and removing a few scuffs on the left hand side , thats going to be a further £2300 . I live in South Africa and the rand value is , spent so far , R350000 , to spend R46000 , if you got the balls to buy one , do it , my car is a 2007 , was always very well maintained . If you buy an iffy one , you wont lose your shirt , you wont lose your wardrobe but you will lose your entire house fixing it , you have been warned , as it is , expect big bills to start coming in at 100000miles , thats about where my costs came in , 4.4s have very expensive oil cooler failures aswell as turbos around that mileage , suspension will be due as its a heavy car , dont beat yourself up , you are driving the last real Range Rover and the new one is not much different , and even with bills tallied , it proberably wont even be a 10% deposit on a new one and yours it fully paid for and depreciated .
Thanks for your honesty Colin. Great cars but occasionally deep pockets needed. Ed
350,000 Rands? On repairs? 😮
Next year should be cheaper as you have done many jobs. 😂😂
I honestly do not wish to sound like a smart ass here but honestly at 16K this car should have been 100% and more fool you for not having all the checks done first so to all watching this this is the first lesson buy well and you will be ok buy a pile of shit then over to you and your bank manager This is a great advert on how not to buy any car is it not ?? Sorry Sorry I really am but for god sake what were you thinking ??
I have had mine for over 8 years paid 7,999.00 and all is well appart from the ignition switch head lining a little loose and head lamp wipers not working 159k miles and not any other issues ????????????????????????????
Hi Allan. Yes I knew it was right at the top of pricing but Robin rushed in and paid a deposit before viewing. We could have backed out but everything was fixed eventually. It’s been a great car over the last year and we’re still happy with it. It was my early days on the channel and probably made it more dramatic than it really was. Entertainment and all. Glad you’re watching though. All the best. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero Cheers Ed no harm meant or intended but hear so much crap about these great cars !!
Did you look at toyota's Landcruiser before buying your car.
I’ve always thought about a land cruiser for myself but I inherited this from my father in law. It’s everything we need right now and to be honest I really like it. I see plenty of Toyotas in the Middle East. Very popular there. Ed
£16k is top money for a L322 with 88k miles . I just bought my first L322 , they are very nice cars .
Inflated prices during COVID unfortunately. Ed
Half the problem is they are bought by people who can't afford to maintain them properly, They can be reliable but you have to be proactive keeping them up together.
Totally agree. I don’t mind spending the money as all the depreciation has now gone. Ed
I bought mine in 2018 with 35990 miles on , bought it with a couple of Dpf sensor faults ( appeared within 3 months ) other than that it’s ran like clockwork for almost 5 years
Good to hear Stephen. Now we've got the car in a good state then i sincerely hope that it's just general maintenance now. Ed
I wish these cars were reliable, if they were I would purchase an autobiography L322 tomorrow , my experience with this vehicle was around 8 years ago when I purchased an L322 vogue V8 diesel 2008 , nothing but trouble ,
Both turbos failed
Electronic handbrake seized on
Trim fell off
Dropped engine to change a blown washer ( injector) under bulkhead £500 … crazy.
Suspension problems which the land rover dealership couldn’t fix ( Maidstone) f*****g useless , hats off to the dealership in ashford for finding the problem in half an hour.
I had the car for two years which I had serviced as soon as I purchased it but unfortunately I broke my own rules … never by a motor without the service history ( I was lied to by the scumbag dealer who said it was still at the auction house ) basically ripped off so my fault 🤦♂️ PS: it won’t happen again.
It’s such a shame as I loved driving the car it was fantastic with plenty of torque and power
Great cars when they work. And yes it has to be remembered that these were over £70k new so repair costs can be shocking. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero it’s not so much repair costs it’s lack of reliability tbh , everyone I know that’s had one has had problems , as much as I love driving these cars I’m steering towards the Porsche Cayenne V8 diesel this time.👍
“Sold as seen” is an absolute myth under uk law, even from private sellers.
I didn’t know there was any protection from private sales? Thanks for letting me know. Ed
Hi Ed, the L322 is my dream car. I am from Belfast, any advise on where to source a decent one?
Hi Sean. Mine is a N Irish car! Previous owners were the Manor House Hotel in Fermanagh. It’s like everything the best ones always seem to be the farthest away! Just get the notifications going on eBay, Autotrader, car and classic and Pistonheads. These are where I go to first. Ed
@Back_Road_Hero That's great! Thank you very much for the advise. I have been in the manor house many times. Thank's again for the tips!
Absolutely brilliant!! Great breakdown of what’s possible required if you want to over spend or keep it just simple and stick with as near to the original asking price etc. And at least the spaniel dogs get the drive around in style!!
Don.
Thanks Don. Thanks for watching. Ed
I've actually had to spend about the same unavoidable sum on repairs and servicing of my 2014 Mitsubishi Pajero (Shogun for you Brits) last year so I don't think a Range Rover is much worse than any other brand of big complicated car. And by comparison the range is probably a much nicer drive.
Thanks. Good to know it’s not unusual for a 4WD. Ed
I rebuke Mitsubishi in the name of Jesus!!!💀🤣🤣🤣
Hi, don't suppose you have a link to the upgraded infotainment system please?
Have a look on my channel for the video. Ed
Why put your self through the grief hart break of buying a Range Rover ive had three of them and none of them were any good .Since moving over to Honda CRV.s there has be no problems should have bought one years ago ,
A CRV won’t tow like an L322 though. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero It towed a horse box with two ponies in with out any bother ,But unlike the Range Rover it was able to tow them back again ,
Fair play Steven. It’s hasn’t let me down yet. You’ve had a different owner experience than me.
That's like comparing apples and oranges 🙄🙄🙄
It’s only money 💰
I've got a feeling that I would have a nice holidays for 2319 pounds 😁 Anyway - that's just a basic running cost + petrol + insurance quite a lot of money per year just for a car ...
You have to balance that with the fact that there’s almost zero depreciation here though.
Sorry to hear about Robin you will miss him. Like Matt at High Peak Autos says when buying keep £3000 back to cover things that might go wrong. Think that is a good rule when buying a L322. if you don't need it then its a bonus, I know you should not need that when buying through a dealer and paying top price, but on the upside you have a really nice car for £20k what would you get for that kind of money.:)
Totally agree. I don't know of a car that can just do everything so well. Perhaps a Landcruiser. It's lovely now that it's all sorted. Thanks for commenting. It's the only real way I can gauge response. Ed
185 quid for a parcel shelf what a rip off
It was what it was. We just wanted to make it complete. Ed
i use mark smiths bicester amazing guys
So glad you have the same great experience as me. Ed
Brilliant review - thank you
Glad it was helpful! Ed
Hi. Thank you for your review. Where did you buy CarPlay for 179? Thank you
I’ve a couple left. www.backroadhero.com/shop/
Ed, Merry Christmas and sorry to hear about loss.
Ed can you tell me who the warranty was with? Can you recommend a company.... I know we hear of stories about not worth the paper often written on them?
Hi Chris. I didn't even bother claiming on this one. Wasn't mainstream but was pushed by the dealer. Tough getting a good one on a car this age. Ed
Thank you
You're welcome. Ed
Hi guys which is the best set of tyres in your experience for L322 supercharged ?? , I want to go for 265/ 55/20 , any advices ??? , thank you so much in advance ( currently255/50/20 );
Pirelli Scorpion Zeros. Winter tyres with an off road capability and quiet on the highway. Best all rounder suited to the Range Rover perfectly. Hope this helps? Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero thank you , my inquiry was more about size of tyres .. this are excellent brand I know but which size I wd go for all season since we don’t have tough winter … but which size are optimum for L322 ..
Going up 5% profile shouldn’t be an issue if you’re changing all 4 tyres as the same time. If you only replace two then you might trigger an abs fault or tyre pressure warning due to different rolling radius across the axels. You will also lengthen the gear ratio slightly with the larger tyre. Ed
@@Back_Road_Hero thank you so much .., interesting infos : ( gear ratio impact ) I will change 5 tyres at the same time ..
Thanks Ed
Much obliged Mike. Thanks. Ed
hi , how come side steps and parcel shelf is running costs?
It’s not. I just highlighted the overall costs since purchase. Then I highlighted the unavoidable running costs towards the end. I’m only trying to help people make a decision. Nothing more, nothing less. Ed
I love it
Thank you. Ed
Which apple car play device did you fit ?
I brought in a couple of extras knowing there might be some interest. Ed
www.backroadhero.com/product/reverse-camera-brh2-universal-portable-wireless-carplay-android-auto/
Ed also, what was your running costs in fuel? Mpg? For the year? Thanks for video brilliant
We average over 30mpg. That's UK mpg.
