  • This talk was given at a local TEDx event, produced independently of the TED Conferences. In this powerful and touching talk, Laura Bates confronts us with the realities of everyday sexism at UK universities. Quoting from eyewitness reports, she tells us shocking stories of women being expected to 'race to strip' as part of initiations; point scoring systems for sleeping with (especially virgin) freshers; and male freshers being forced to watch pornography. Moving from past problems to hopes for the future, Laura Bates reminds us that we can fight these sexist aspects of uni culture if we all stand together.
Laura Bates is the founder of the
Everyday Sexism project, a collection of
    women's daily experiences of gender
inequality, which aims to step towards
    gender equality by demonstrating that
sexism still exists in abundance in the UK
and abroad, despite what many think. In
December 2013 the project received its 50,000th entry. She is also contributor at Women Under Siege, a New York-based project working to combat the use of sexualised violence as a tool of war. She has written for the Independent, the Huffington Post, Grazia, the Women's Media Center and JUMP!Magazine for girls.
About TEDx, x = independently organized event In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

I find it incredibly disgusting how many comments feature judgments against Ms. Bates for her talk, her dress, and her subject matter. However, I am not surprised. It figures that individuals who say these things will overlook a discussion regarding sexual abuse and discrimination in favor of talking about what Ms. Bates is wearing. You feel more comfortable discussing her wardrobe choices or labeling her as "whiny" instead of listening to her valid, well-formed points on sexism. But please, continue to prove her point. The prevalence of your misogynistic, hateful judgments only serves to solidify the point that sexism is in fact thriving in new ways through folks like you.

I am a polish Jew and I sure have a lot to complain and bitch about, I could say that Germany should pay for my flights if I wanted to see my killed off heritage, but I know that playing victim isn't the right answer. It wasn't Germany as a whole who made itself a bad place, certain people did! All third wave feminist do is target the majority, and criticize, I might be doing that in my comment here and I'm sorry if I am wrong. How about all of our selfish asses including me try to help the real issues, not just by raising awareness, but by actions. Let's help the real oppressed!

    • @datbish5
      @datbish5 7 лет назад +13

Adam Levy Feminism has come a long way, I acknowledge that. Many people claim it's outdated and not necessary in this particular society. However, we are dealing with marks left on society after women have been opressed for so long. It might sound little or irrelevant, but it definitely influences women and effects them negatively. That alone should be something to be aware of, just so we can be better people ourselves and have that selfawareness that she's trying to evoke so we can change even more for the better as a society. I am very sorry for what happened to your ancestors, truly am. I get that when you put things in perspective like that this sounds whiny. But by that same logic we wouldn't look up unless something violent or catastrophic happens. While the root of the problem (in this case sexism, or any form of hate) had been flooting around unapologetically all along. Condemned as normal, if you will. It's not bad to create self awareness for yourself, it makes us better people.

Okay, first of all, stop assuming shit about me, you clearly know nothing about me, and are drawing grandiose conclusions based on your perception, not mine. As the term "nice guy" is subjective, and you clearly don't know what I meant by it. I am not "offended" by this video. I am refuting his truth claim that women do not make up claims of sexual assault/rape, as they do, all the time, for personal gain. It isn't that some people refuse to see the truth, I am being objective and pointing out facts. He is being biased. Nice strawman btw. Have I ever claimed every woman is a liar? No. Have I ever denied the existence of rape or sexual assault? No. How incredibly condescending and patronizing of you to post obvious facts about women and assume I don't acknowledge or realize these things. You are being rude, smug, arrogant, and I wouldn't expect any less from a third wave feminist hell bent on being oppressed. Also, your "pay gap" doesn't exist. There is an earnings gap, not a wage gap. The study I believe you are talking about fails to take into account profession chosen, hours worked, and life choices. If that really existed, wouldn't companies just hire all women? It would save them a lot of money. According to multiple studies by Claudia Goldin, men and women earn the same out of college when you take into account those factors. Single, childless women also out earn men in most major cities. I see your game, and it is pathetic.

I kicked him and he dropped me and I sprained my thumb. I filed a claim against him and he was warned that a female had made a complaint against him. Sorry, but you really know nothing about me and my terms and beliefs. Where did you ever get the idea that I hate men? Are you lumping me into a category just because I support women who are victims of sexual harassment? If you're a man, I'd like you to walk in a woman's shoes for a couple weeks and see if you're not treated differently than men. It's degrading and humiliating to be treated with such primitive aggression and sexual degeneration. A perfect example is all these countries who are letting in refugees from lower developed areas, their women are being raped at 2 to 3 times the rate. These men are degenerate in consciousness and significantly less evolved. Religion plays a big role in this degeneration as well. As for your manspreading, mansplaining and I never heard of that last one, I think those are the stupidest things I've ever heard. I don't deny men face sexism and discrimination, but I support them as well. There is no such thing as a perfect/ideal man or woman. It's impossible. People are either good and decent human beings or they are not.

Needles to say my confrontation with reality was swift and brutal. I would also like to point out that these seem more like examples of young men acting like assholes, especially the powerless type of male who often spout off this way. In a population of hundreds of millions in western society examples will always be available.

RAPE IS BAD, No-one wants to get raped,,No-one wants to be violated, and no-one wants to be blamed for what other men do, Their will always have bad men, their will also have bad women, Men are told when their young to keep their feelings to them selves, but women try and make themselves the victim, All im trying to say is stop worrying about just women, worry about both genders,(Triggered arnt ya i said "both genders' Informing their is 2 genders)
I love women, I Respect them, Id do anything for them, I wont touch a women unless they tell me to, I wont force them into it, i wont egg them on, If they dont want it I know if they dont, infact im edgy if a girl feels uncomfortable around me, I want to make them not uncomfortable, Like i said, I would rather see equality, but we all know that will never happen, their will always be messed up people, Women already rule the world, they get accepted for their feelings they win instant attention when they claim they get raped, they win child support , where as men, arnt allowed to show emotion, they arnt able to win the acceptance over rape, Be like the ancient feminists, accept everyone, actually try and help everybody, not just urselves, Trying to blame men for ur problems GET THAT OUTTA HERE Blame urselves for not trying to help everybody, Yes their are some feminists that are accually good, I Like to call them 'Human Beings' They accept everyone, they fight for everyone, they want equality, Equality isnt just about men, isnt just about women, Its about everyone, 1st world to 3rd, they stop sexism everywhere, they Try not to get angry at "Men" The men their pursueing as bad they should call Terrorists, dont call the bad men 'Men' Because you make us men(Real humans) look bad for what others do, just calm urself and u'll be fine ;D Have a great day and realize this was made by a 11 year old, Bye -Cole Williams

Most of these men had no problem with women until feminism went on the offense and began labeling everything sexism and microaggressions. You can't expect to try to destroy a scientist over his shirt, go on a campaign to ban the word "bossy", advocate putting men into concentration camps and attempt to ruin men's lives with false accusations and not expect them to respond negatively. The situation is sad and I don't understand why sometimes women are alienated like we are some weird unreachable creatures.. I feel like fighting won't help though, anger only multiplies anger, but raising awareness could help. Educating kids to treat all girls and boys responsibly, maybe supporting friendships of opposite genders. Also movies nowadays are putting pressure stressing machism which makes the one that goes for a women as for a pray to be the real man or so..

You're defensive when it is clear that if the sexes were reversed, men would not put up with being treated like any of that.
Why is it ok to call women horrific names and to be abused like how she described?? What if we started labelling people as "women and creeps" or "CEOs and creeps" or "Ladies and creeps?"
What if we reduced ALL men down to hateful slurs, then treated them as if they are animals? What if we told men they had to accept being called "creeps" and that they had to do "initiations" such as crawling around on the floor as women slapped them?
Get over yourself. When men start taking accountability for their hateful actions, then women won't be calling this behaviour out. Boys who brag about r*ping women?

Wome, if your university is known for acts of this kind then maybe you shouldnt go out to the parties on campus if you want to go out and relax go out to a piano bar or something like that with your friends. But there was not a huge on-campus population of students, and no frats/sororities. I can only base what I now about frats/sororities on the movies... and if they are any reflection, some can promote awful views, attitudes and behaviours, and way too much peer pressure to do the wrong thing. The Dood There are a lot more problems in the middle east (and other areas of the world) concerning women's rights than there are in America and a lot of feminists are fighting that. However, another country's problems don't make ours any less legitimate. If you feel strongly about the women in the middle east then do something to help them and speak out about the prevalent sexism there. But what your doing now is trying to silence their biggest advocates.

I've YET to see any buzzfeed, mic, or any feminist videos on the degenerate culture has for women in the middle east, don't get me wrong, I'm sure one or two exist, but they are nowhere near in the volume they should be. Instead it is filled with things like "mansplaining" "manspreading" and all sorts of bullshit that is irrelevant and not a real issue. If there are a lot more problems in the middle east, why is there not a lot more coverage, marches, protests, TEDX VIDEOS. Why are we stuck with nitpicking nonissues and "muh patriarchy". The truth is feminism is allied with Islam and the middle east because they have a common enemy, the "middle class white guy".
There is no legitimate issue of sexism in the United States. There are individual circumstances and cases, but do not reflect the group as a whole. Most "sexism" and mean behavior to women, COMES FROM women. Look it up.

I was signed off but was told to man up and get a grip (over the phone while off sick shaking from stress) while a female colleague received hugs and praise and told to go home...

Steve Fenton Right... Because I'm pointing out it's not feminism's fault that men are miners, I'm privileged??? Oh wow, you really don't know what privilege means. Instead of being butt hurt, feminism is actually trying to remove the ideas of a man being hyper masculine. And you want equality for men whilst also downgrading the woman's worth? Hmm... Your idea of equality is very screwed.
