    I use a Pik with a larger reservoir, so can take all the time I want. I also add a bit of mint flavored mouthwash to the warm water--leaves everything fresh and clean. BTW, brushing takes away a lot of debris, flossing takes even more from between the teeth, but even after that, the Pik really washes out a bunch of debris you don't even realize was there! Water Flossing is great!!!

    Some reasons I prefer the waterpik:
    My wide fingers and incredibly tight teeth make flossing difficult and it takes a much longer time.
    I can pik brush and pik again with mouthwash with ACT in less time than a floss and brush.
    Some floss broke between 2 teeth, trying to remove it pushed the fibres under the gumline and a week later I had an infection that hurt so much that codeine and paracetamol might as well have been sugar and spice.

    I got a water flosser this year and regret not getting it earlier in my life. Manual flossing isn't very good at clearing debris, it just dislodges it. And for those gaps between teeth, it's very easy for the debris to get stuck there once dislodged. The water flosser is able to blow everything through and away from your teeth. I now manually floss followed by water flossing. It amazes me how much food debris I see when I rinse after water flossing.

    However we have found in our practice the results with the counter top unit far surpasses the hand held due to the pressure knob on the Aquarius model....game changer
    I can tell you most of my patients that use the counter top model do not have to floss if used daily
    You do not have to add anything to the waterpik other than water as it is not the substance it is the pressure that makes it work by the daily disruption of the bacterial process

      The water pick if a great alternative to flossing. I would not stop flossing but interchanging the two is a great idea. I recommend doing 1 teaspoon bleach in 5.25% concentration bleach 2-3x per week. be sure not to drink any water for 10 minutes after. It is awesome for lowering the pH of the mouth versus acidic mouthwashes.

    • @askahygienist
      @askahygienist 4 года назад +22

      No. No no no lol it does NOT replace flossing. The water pressure does not remove the film of plaque from the teeth, it helps to flush out anything that’s floating around in there but not what’s stuck on the teeth. Think of it as a sink or a toilet that gets dirty with a rim of orange slimy gunk; no matter how many times you flush that toilet it’s not gonna get rid of the gunk, you have to manually wipe it off/scrub it.
      I’ve seen a lot of patients who only used waterpik and gums appear to be light pink and firm but underneath is a layer of grainy tartar that is undetectably causing periodontal disease.
      Waterpik is a great additional tool to brushing/flossing but NOT a replacement. You’re welcome, pass it on! :P

    • @askahygienist
      @askahygienist 3 года назад +3

      Hammad Khan it removes bigger chunks of food, but not the plaque that accumulates on teeth and turns to tartar. If you don’t floss eventually you will experience bone loss and need for deep cleaning. I’m really sorry you don’t like to use string but there are no shortcuts to clean between your teeth. I don’t like to poop or clip my toe nails but it has to be done 🥴

      Usually best to add NOTHING to it. First, it can clog up the machine. 2nd, all you need is water. I researched this topic a lot. Many rinses have acidic pH levels. Many others contain alcohol which dries your mouth and can actually lead to cavities. With proper oral hygiene most people are fine. WP does not substitute for floss. Electric brushes, used properly are also superior.

    Everyone has their own theories about this but the only way to know for sure is to test it yourself . Firstly,use the waterpik then floss traditionally after ; if there are any food residues on the string then you know you have to floss both ways . Personally, I tried it and didn’t get any food residues.However, I’ll suggest flossing traditionally three- four times a week OR traditional floss in the a.m and waterpik in the p.m.
    Also remember to stimulate your gums to prevent periodontal disease.

The first water floss removes the loose debris, the string loosens the stuck debris the toothpaste is for the hard to reach toothbrush places and the final floss removes that debris. The toothpaste is the protection and should be left on for minimum 1/4 hour or over (no eating or drinking), spit out the residue but do not rinse

    It's crazy how you're a dentist and you tell people to put bleach in the water and floss with that that's not normal that's a bad recommendation that's going to cause some kind of cancer

    • @MrShapangpang
      @MrShapangpang 3 года назад +2

      Bleach isn’t a carcinogen, it does not cause cancer… he is a medical professional im sure he knows better than you. Bleach although toxic can be used in small quantities to help with oral hygiene like in this case, and not harm you.

      Bleach will also cause sensitivity to the gums and cause the gums to turn white.

      The bleach acts as a sanitizer and antimicrobial agent. It's no different than what they put into public drinking water or swimming pools. You're ok with using that kind of water tho, right? This solution would be no different. All 3 contain chlorine. Why does everybody get so scared the moment they hear the word bleach?!

    Water pic does not replace flossing. The better analogy is the self serve car wash. The power wands put out much more force than waterpic does, if you put it on your hand it will blast your skin off and draw blood. Now wash your car and it does not get the final layer of dirt off, you have to wipe your car with a cloth to get the final layer of dirt. So what good will a mild pulse of water do from waterpic? Not much at all.
    Even the car wash wand will not work on your teeth as good as floss. If they made a waterpic as good as your car wash wand , it would blast your gums right off but still not get the plaque off

      I use multiple mouthwashes with chlorine dioxide aka bleach. It is safe and it neutralizes your breath so it doesn't smell.
