  • Wondering what's the best toothpaste? Now they have many different toothpastes to offer solutions for teeth whitening, sensitivity, gingivitis and gum disease.
    Charcoal toothpaste has been popularized recently and claims to whiten the teeth more effectively than other toothpastes. It may do so because of the abrasiveness of the toothpaste. It has an RDA level of 70-90 which is fairly abrasive.
    Parodontax is another popular toothpaste that uses Stannous Fluoride. Stannous fluoride is an anti-bacterial agent that's clinically proven to protect against gingivitis, plaque and tooth sensitivity. However, it can be toxic if ingested so one must be careful using this type of toothpaste with young children. It has an RDA level of 150
    Colgate Total also uses Stannous Fluoride which is effective at killing bacteria in your mouth. However, its up to you to decide which of these toothpastes is the best toothpaste. Colgate Total has an RDA level of 70
    Prevadent 5000 is a prescription toothpaste that is very effective for those with sensitive roots. It has an RDA level of 112
    Dr. Nemeth does not use any toothpaste because in most cases it isn't necessary unless you have a specific condition. There was a study conducted that showed that brushing without toothpaste is just as effective as brushing with toothpaste. So it's the toothbrush that does most of the work!
    We also offer our patients Dr Nemeth's Tooth and Gum Powder because we believe that it is extremely effective at killing the bacteria that cause gum disease. It has an RDA level of 7.

    What’s RDA?

    • @josephrnemeth
      @josephrnemeth  3 года назад +542

      Good question! RDA is the scale they use for the Abrasiveness level of the toothpaste. So in other words how capable the toothpaste is of polishing or cleaning a hard surface by rubbing or grinding.

    • @PanchoVilla-fe8pt
      @PanchoVilla-fe8pt 3 года назад +70

    • @josephrnemeth
      @josephrnemeth  3 года назад +343

      @@PanchoVilla-fe8pt Not necessarily! The lower the RDA number the less it will cause damage to your teeth and gums through abrasion. The higher the RDA number the more thoroughly it will clean and it may whiten more effectively, but be careful! If you have gum recession or sensitive teeth, you may want to use a toothpaste with a lower RDA number. If you want to whiten your teeth and if your teeth and gums are relatively strong, use a higher RDA number.

    As a retired Dental Hygienist, I use a slight amount of the very basic Colgate for taste. I brushed too much over the years. Brush twice,. floss twice. Stannous Fluoride and Chlorhexidine rinse can stain. Whitening toothpaste can take some stain off but doesn't change the color of your teeth. Mostly,they want to sell you toothpaste. It's the physical act of brushing and flooding that removes plaque.

    A humble dental students perspective: Brushing itself does prevent cavities and that is backed by many studies. Fluoride has overwhelming amount of studies to support its effectiveness in reducing cavities through (1) remineralizing/rebuilding enamel and (2) decreasing the solubility/ demineralization of enamel. Fluoride is in toothpaste and thus recommended by dentist. The toxicity would occur if a 6 year old ate a tube of toothpaste, so it is important to keep toothpaste out of kids reach. An adult would have to eat over 20 tubes of tooth paste before toxicity.
    Here is what I see the cause of cavities are based on my clinical experience as a dental student.
    Many cavities are in between teeth where brushing cannot reach or reoccurring around a previous filling of a lesion between the teeth.
    How to prevent these extremely common cavities? FLOSS!
    I can’t support flossing enough because I know most of us don’t do it. Think about it like sunscreen which has gotten a lot of attention for preventing wrinkles how about flossing to prevent tooth loss? something just as if not more unaesthetic not to mention has functional implications like not being able to eat! Let’s floss and sunscreen more this year 🎉
    So back to this video: there are no clinical studies that are referenced and he conveniently promotes his powder. And he doesn’t have any disclaimers which is irresponsible because as a licensed dentist he inherently has influence over the general public’s opinion. Also dentist don’t make money off of people buying toothpaste, Colgate (etc) does. This man did commodify this video. It is interesting how people believe this dentist because he is saying something “different”. Like a social experiment. And it shows again the influence a license professional has over the public which is understandable.
    Abrasion is a type of wear that studies show is closely linked to toothbrush bristle hardeness. Oral B has a cool feature on their toothbrush where it lights up red when you are pressing too hard. (Not sponsored ) I notice a lot of men are very heavy handed and maybe a reminder could help. And of course avoiding hard bristle tooth brushes.
    Moral of the story: FLOSS, brush with medium to soft bristle brush, fluoride helps strengthen enamel, and continue learning and investing in yourself.

    Sooooo Impressed by your honesty! I have 2 connective tissue disorders which have lead to my teeth sharding away and now being very sensitive. One thing that has helped has been to stop eating any nuts and sunflower seeds! My health food store suggested it and it has helped immensely! And it wasnt the crunching because I can NOW EAT CRUNCHY STUFF AGAIN! Also because of the connective tissue disorders I cant floss so I carefully clean between my teeth with a toothpick or a pick like the one you showed and I can only brush once a day. I dont have a lot of teeth left because they are gradually all sharding away and not holding onto the fillings so Im hoping to be able to get those implants because I cant get dentures (my gums will blister from the friction) but up here they are over $50 thousand and I havent the money. BTW has anyone ever told you how much you look like Canada's beloved Mr. Dressup? I grew up on his show. That's a big compliment!

You really need to concentrate on flossing. 25 years later, I'm just starting to understand that gums need love, too.❤ I'm an avid flosser trying to teach my 10 year year old the validity of flossing. Fellow dentist here-really cool perspective you have. It’s easy to get wrapped up in the marketing of toothpastes, but unless you have a specific need (high caries risk, sensitivity, etc.) it really is unnecessary, as the main goal in oral hygiene is disruption of that biofilm. I personally use ClinPro 5000, because I have multiple restorations from my childhood that I want to keep healthy with high amounts of fluoride, and I also have sensitive teeth. I also just enjoy that minty fresh feeling toothpaste gives, even if it’s not a true indication of cleanliness. Thanks for the content, always nice to hear a fresh and grounded point of view.

      My dentist told me that it doesn't matter what type or brand of toothpaste I use. There are so many out there that supposedly target so many things like plaque, tarter and gingivitis. He said I could use the cheapest most basic toothpaste and that I would be fine as long as I brushed. So instead of spending 8 or 10 dollars on toothpaste I went out and bought a tube of Aim for a dollar. All I can say is that I hope he was right...

Last night i used flouride toothpaste to give my teeth a break from sensitivity and spent hours with bleeding gums and when i flossed today they are bleeding again.
    If you dont use toothpaste. How do you get the fresh feeling in the morning to get rid of the sleepy breathe? Does brushing make you feel fresh enough?

    Hi so glad ive found this channel, I’ve had to go to the dentist yesterday on an emergency appointment I’ve got abscess. Not had my usual dental care, during the Covid restrictions.
    The dentist said too me that was a reason I had this problem.
    He asked me the last time I had an abscess it was 25 years ago.
    Usually the dentist tells me my teeth are good just needing a clean which they do. To get rid of plaque build up, every couple of months.
    I’ve found your video way more helpful than the dentist I visited today.
