Thank you very much for this. I'm from the UK and what you have just explained to me on your video has made so much more sense to what dentists here in the UK have told me over the years ( i'm 46yr old ). Thanks again.
Thank you so much for breaking down the info to where even with my medications I can understand which toothpaste to use. I often fall asleep at night before I can brush because of my medications I am on (Suboxone and Gabapentin for pain, Klonopin and Zyprexa for panic disorder/Anxiety) so this info helps a lot! I often overthink a lot of things because of my anxiety disorder but this video helped put me at some ease! Thank you, Dr Tyler!
Thank you so much! This was very helpful and very easy to understand. The only thing I wish it had is the option of subtitles, but otherwise your voice is clear and easy to follow
This was very informative. I am a toothpaste fanatic, can never have enough. I just feel that I don't have the right one every time. But now I know what to look out for.. Thanks Doc..
From experience, I totally agree with going to the dentist and having a dental hygienist clean and polish your teeth to remove any stains. During your visit ask the dentist or hygienist what you can do to prevent the staining. Maybe you need to stop or cut down on drinking dark soft drinks or coffee with cream and sugar. They might even say you can continue to drink and eat as before but you need to brush differently or with a different type of brush or toothpaste. I was getting stains on the inside of my bottom front 4 teeth (the 4 between the canines) from drinking coffee with cream and sugar. I was able to continue drinking coffee with cream and sugar but I needed to brush my teeth 20 to 30 minutes after I was done drinking and if for some reason I wasn't able to brush them, I was told to rinse and swoosh my mouth with warm water immediately after I was done drinking my coffe to help dissolve and spit out the remaining sugar in my mouth. Both the brushing and rinsing with warm water took care of the issue. I would avoid using whitening toothpaste, but if you decide to use it, only use it for a week or two. If the stain doesn't go away during this time, discontinue using it and go see a dental hygienist. Whitening toothpaste will wear away your enamel after using it for a long time. If you wear away your enamel, you will have yellowish/brown teeth. Not a good look.
@@LiliS319 That's not what I was told by my dentist. He said the best way to drink coffee to avoid stains is "black" no milk, no cream, and not sugar. I didn't ask about the milk but I'm assuming it's the lactose in milk. Lactose is a sugar.
@@bernardocisneros4402 the idea is that the milk proteins bind to the polyphenols (the stuff in coffee that causes staining), so it doesn't attach to the teeth as much. But I think I see where the disconnect may be. You're american right? I think americans when they say coffee they mean the watered down stuff, (~americano). Europeans generally don't consume watered down coffee, of course it may vary but it's not a drink of choice in most countries here that I'm aware of. When we think of coffee it's either a shot of espresso or a shot of espresso with some amount of steamed milk and/or foam. You don't need a doctor to see how disgustingly a shot of fresh espresso stains teeth and tongue compared to a cappucino, but I'm sure it's just a matter of how much you water down the coffee wherer it stains even less.
@@LiliS319 Yes, I'm American and drink the watered down version. My sister drinks the cappuccinos and espressos. They are too strong for me. My coffee is like lightly muddied water compared to the mud my sister drinks, but she enjoys them.
I have watched so many videos related to this topic but your videos is so informative, the way you explained things was so gentle. I would definitely share your video with others.
Love this explanation. I always tell my husband there is no difference between that $7 dollar tube of Sodium Fluoride toothpaste and the $2 one from Colgate. It’s all in the marketing. One other thing I would consider too, is taste! I use pepsodent (or aim if I can’t find it,) because the taste is pleasant. I always follow up with a mouthwash as well.
Wish I found this an hour or two ago. Just wasted a bunch of time looking at a ton of different toothpaste ingredients to come up with a similar conclusion. Once my Stannous Flouride Whitening toothpaste supply runs out, then I'm going non-whitening as the video suggests. Crest whitestrips did more to whiten my teeth in 3 weeks than a near lifetime of whitening toothpaste did any way.
A lot of dentists I have heard do not recommend Stannous fluoride for the teeth people it also kills a lot of beneficial bacterial. And charcoal toothpaste is very abrasive along with most whiting toothpastes that actually damage the teeth scratching them up
Unless you drink alot of coffee, black tea, or red wine, you typically don't develop enough stain to need a whitening toothpaste, as most toothpastes are capable of removing small amounts of surface stain. Originally, this style of toothpaste was marketed towards smokers and coffee drinkers. Topol was the first big one in the US that I remember back in the 80's, but Rembrandt was the first one that started the whitening fad. Probably because Topol had a reputation of being very abrasive, whereas Rebrandt was alot milder.
I live in the UK and I find many tooth pastes, especially whitening ones, give me sore dry chapped lips. My skin must be sensitive to a particular ingredient and when I brush I usually get alot of toothpaste foam around my lips. So I had to be really careful about which brand and which type I choose. Currently I find Colgate Sensitive with Sensifoam works brilliantly. No bad reaction. But some of the other Sensitive pastes from Colgate do react with my skin. I just hope this product remains available.
Really glad I found this! I'll go with Crest for now. Finding the perfect toothpaste is the next step since I have already found the best e-toothbrush. Which the Oclean Flow btw!
Really needed this, now I'll just do my research about toothpaste brands. Since this is my next step after actually finding the best electric toothbrush, the Oclean Flow.
I LOVE this video. I do have a question about not using any toothpaste at all. There's a doctor who doesn't use any toothpaste at all as brushing without toothpaste is just as effective. How would someone even keep their mouth from bad odors that way? (P.S: Your voice is extremely soothing.)

Colgate Total SF has stannous fluoride which should help with sensitivity. Honestly, mouthwashes don't do that much. I'm skeptical that any of the whitening mouthwashes will be effective enough for you to notice a difference. If you get a lot of cavities, you might benefit from a fluoride mouthwash, and if you have a dry mouth, mouthwashes can be helpful. Other than that, they are not nearly as important as brushing and flossing

Unfortunately, I don't know of any toothpaste that combines stannous fluoride and potassium nitrate, but if you're looking for help with sensitivity and gingivitis, a stannous fluoride toothpaste might be good for you. I've heard from other people that have trouble with the mint flavor of some toothpastes being too strong. You could try a fluoride toothpaste that is aimed at kids, and I know that Tom's has some popular non-mint toothpaste
Best video on the topic. Thank you!
