Wish I knew this years ago. Practical cleaning is the only way to prevent gum disease and tooth loss. Very well stated as simple advice and directions.
I work as a hygienist for a periodontist. I think it should be mentioned that each flossing tool is indicated for specific pocket depths. String floss is excellent for healthy mouths with 2-3mm pocketing. A waterpik, while it does not substitute flossing, is indicated in addition to flossing for 5-6mm pockets and the best results are achieved if the tip is paused and/or angled between the teeth. Proxabrushes and soft picks should not be used just between teeth, but rather in the gum between the gum and the tooth.
I didn’t know that a water flossed isn’t a substitute and i was just about to buy one ! Good to know ? Why are they calling it a flosser if it’s not even a substitute ?

Thank you doctor! I have trouble flossing my daughter’s teeth. She has cerebral palsy and cannot do it. The dentist just keeps saying floss them. It is not as easy as that. I will definitely try these different ways. She has never had cavities because she does not like sweets, but at 31 is starting to get them because of my poor job at flossing attempts. Thank you so much for this encouragement I have been looking for!
I wish i would have got into this back when i was going into my 20's. When you are young and poor and can't afford this shit, and don't care, it really adds up after a while. Now i'm nearly 30, and trying to catch up on my teeth and gum health and had to look this stuff up, because i was never really taught about flossing. What? Your gums are bleeding, well they will stop bleeding if you do it more." I still don't understand why dental isn't included in Universal healthcare, more people would pay more attention to their teeth, if the high cost of getting teeth cleaned or maintained or fixed doesn't deter people from it. Registered dental hygienist of 34 years chiming in. Thank you for explaining this so well. Here’s the problem in a lot of general dentist office. Spending an acceptable amount of time doing hygiene instructions is a challenge. Additionally, in order to save money, many office are no longer giving out hygiene goody bags to their patients. I'm 35 years old and I've gone to a dentist atleast once a year for as long as I can remember. 2 months ago was the first time I was shown how to use floss properly and also how (and why) periodontal disease progresses. I wish I knew this information atleast 10 years ago.
@susanmetz9892 I completely agree and understand what you're saying. Just like a good physical trainer at a gym is worth their weight in gold so is a good dental hygienist. You pay the physical trainer to do an evaluation of your current physical condition and limitations. Based on the evaluation, he will recommend exercises and show you how to do those exercises to accomplish your goals. It's priceless when you accomplish your goals in the gym without getting hurt. If you don't hire a physical trainer, and you hurt yourself because you're going beyond your abilities or doing the exercise wrong, you're going to pay more in medical bills and/or not being able to work. Same thing with a hygienest. If you don't hire a one for an hour or two, then you're going to pay MUCH, MUCH MORE down the road getting cavities filled, root canals, crowns, and maybe even losing some or all of your teeth due to periodontitis. The $120 dollars I spent for a hygenist to come over for two hours and show the whole family how to care for our oral health was some of the best money I ever spent. I'm so glad I did it.
@@bernardocisneros4402 What you described is the widespread problem throughout all medical fields in the U.S. It would be impossible to run a dental or medical practice with the overhead being astronomical while the insurance reimbursement is minimal.

Not entirely their faults, though, but I wish they had given me more advice than simply saying 'You should floss'. I am really disappointed on dentists. Instead of explaining how to do oral care routine they just get mad at you saying: you don't brush well your teeth! Look how many stones you have! (after putting blue paste on teeth). We are just people, parents don't know, society doesn't know, especially a lot of new things being created.
It would be bad for business if they supported people in a positive way and made sure they were actually brushing/flossing in a way that didn't immediately put people on the defensive, making it even less likely for you to floss.
Just started using the Proxabrush. Even though I've brushed/flossed daily since I was a teen (60 now) and have cleanings/exams every six months, gum recession has really gotten worse in the last few years. The relief I got from usung the Proxa brush with some sensitive toothpaste between my molars was amazing! No more burning and itching! Thanks for the great videos, Dr. Nemeth!
The water flosser was the best investment i ever made... I was shocked at how much old food got trapped under the gums and this was even with regular flossing. Sometimes my tongue would feel like something was there but i could not get it out. Letting the water massage the location for a while caused a piece of something to come out and my teeth suddenly felt less irritable and cool. I got the portable version. It has a rechargeable battery and is a little larger than an electric toothbrush.... Continued use also minimizes plaque buildup
I had a wonderful dentist many moons ago who had a beautiful fish tank in his waiting room. There were many colorful fish in the tank but I liked the cute little note at the bottom: "only floss the teeth you wish to keep" I never forgot that!
To get rid of bacteria, remove the food they need to survive. I eliminated all sugars by changing to a carnivore diet and the difference in my teeth is incredible, gum disease gone, plaque gone, teeth whiter and thicker.
I've learned a lot from your video. I have crowded, overlapping teeth, cavities in between those teeth, as well as advanced periodontal disease and loose (and lost) teeth. My mouth is an embarrassing nightmare. But thanks to your video, I see that there are alternatives to the regular dental floss which won't go in between some of my teeth. It's too late to save my teeth but I can at least improve the health of my gums somewhat and possibly keep my teeth a little longer until I can get dentures. Such great information! I see a Waterpik in my future. Thank you so much!
I have something like that too and I want to share that I am seeing way healthier gums now that I use a repairing mouthwash called Biorepair. I’m not sure where you’re from and if this product is available in your area, but I’m sure there are equivalents. This mouthwash has a viscosity to it that makes it stick a bit longer and some ingredients that are working wonders on my gums. They are not swollen, red and bleeding anymore. No bad breath. If it helps, I had a round of antibiotics last month (for a sore throat) and I think it killed the bacteria under my gums, but flossing, brushing and using the repairing mouthwash before bed is doing wonders
@@kme3894. Do you also have gum recession? That mouthwash you mention is available through Amazon in the US and saw that one of its ingredients includes xylitol which is very good for mouth health.
My dental assistants always seem kinda disappointed because I have no tartar and my gums don't bleed. I had a cleaning that took like 5 minutes one time (they charged full price of course haha). Just wish they had these when I was younger, really is a game changer, and tooth saver.
I've pre-ordered the instafloss water flosser and I'm weirdly excited for it lol. I've never used a water flosser before but I always hear such good things about them
I started using some of his floss tips and now my total oral care routine is over an hour a day lol. I’m in braces and it’s really difficult to floss so I’m using floss threaders dipped in toothpaste , proxabrushes dipped in toothpaste, water pik with mouthwash and different electric and manual toothbrushes. I have 10 different toothpaste and 10 different mouthwashes that I rotate between. Some products were bought from my dentist and not OTC. I also get my teeth cleaned every 3 months. I’ve been in braces for 4.5 years and it’ll probably be 5-6 years before I get them off and I also have impacted canines so it’s super important for me to take care of my teeth. I think I might be a little too obsessed though. I find myself going to different stores just to see if I can find new and different oral care products. I even found all the braces care items on Amazon. I Was very happy to find a whitener made just for braces since I’m in white ceramic brackets that stain easily. Next up is finding oral probiotics and ultra fine proxabrushes because my teeth are super tight and close together and it seems even the ones made for tight spaces are still too big in some areas. I never thought I’d start hoarding oral care. Exciting stuff for me 😅. Thanks so much for your tips. My favorite is the Proxabrush dipped in toothpaste. I use a non foaming gel based toothpaste just for this so that the brush glides better and I’m also not dealing with the excess foaming and spitting every 2 seconds while I’m trying to focus on flossing. Works out great 👍🏼
I know it's been 9 months but I needed to tell you you sound like me. Hoarding dental products has been my hobby for 5 years now lol. I JUST gave some stuff away a month ago...then bought some more stuff 😂. Also, great tips too!
My condolences for having braces. They're a huge pain (sometimes literally) to clean, and eats up a pretty decent chunk of time in the bathroom just cleaning. Seriously worth it though, and the feeling when your orthodontist finally removes them one day feels like heaven. Just remember to wear your eventual retainer for several more years :P
I am new to your channel. I have just subscribed. You have no idea how you have inspired me! Finally a dentist who explains things clearly, demonstrates how to use the products, and genuinely cares about people and his chosen profession. I am very grateful to have found this channel, and this dentist. Thanks again, Dr. Nemeth.
At long last I find a video that demonstrates how to use the water flosser. I bought one but managed to floss the mirror, vanity and my face before managing to turn it off. As I was disinfecting my washroom I swore I'd never do THAT again. I may just do that now! Thanks
I know this is late in coming, but i'm so glad that youtube brought you to me. On your advice I got a water pic which feels amazing. It makes my gums feel so good. I also got, the brush pics. I am happy to not have to use floss any longer. Sometimes I use the brush pics several times a day. Thanks for sharing your expertise with us.
I used the waterpik highest pressure to try it out and it blew 4 of my teeth straight out of my mouth.. Cant believe you are on the highest pressure level bro, that´s just incredible!
In Sweden xylitol is used and decay has dropped to a fraction of our level in America in kids and its also great for older. Drastically reduces acidic saliva which is the real cause of decay/cavities which can be reversed. Healed without fillings.
I've used a waterpik for about a year but must say that I noticed, with the help of my dentist and hygienist, that using a sulcabrush and regular floss as well helps a lot too! I use 2 tone plaque disclosing tablets and if I go several days just using the waterpik and electric toothbrush, without floss or sulcabrush, the dye discloses old plaque.
I really enjoy your videos, they are very informative and help me understand how to use different dental implements correctly. You are very comforting.
I am here after a 3rd top molar tooth removal surgery. I was in so much pain 40 minutes after my tooth extraction! I am not going to floss my teeth but I am going to use a water pik.
Thanks Dr. For showing me how to use my dental tool correctly. My periodontal disease has advanced greatly. And I tried very hard to avoid this problem. I been seeing my dentist every three month for cleaning. And I am so sad. But, you have given me some hope.
Jo-Ann Andrews How have u dealt so far with periodontal disease? Did u make a recovery yet? I hope so Lmk because I’m in a similar situation unfortunately
Diego Unger Hi, Diego I’ve been using my Waterpik flosser after each meal, flossing after each meal, brushing after each meal. (no snacks). I added Probiotic formulated for Oral health. I use both products. PRP-DENTAL and PROBIORA PLUS. I see my dentist in October for a cleaning hopeful I’ll have a better report.
Jo-Ann Andrews @ Please do this .. i have periodontal issue too .. with 5-6 mm of pockets .. in addition to brushing with an ultra soft tooth brush and above mentioned water flossing techniques .. i have been using charcoal toothpaste from amazon .. and it has been working well for me .. the pain from my gum tissue has reduced.. gums are healing .. i’m also doing wheatgrass pulling .. for teeth .. twice a day .. these two .. in combination with above mentioned dental hygiene with an extremely soft brush with thin bristles.. i have reduced carbs and stopped all forms of sugar .. and taking d and c vitamin supplements.. my gums have never been better!!! my gums are healing .. i have started only a couple of days ago .. and alrdy see the difference!!! please try this!!! also buy oral teeth and gum oil .. to massage ur gums .. it will help greatly!!!! let me know after a week!!! happy healing!!
I got a Water Pic/flosser a few years ago. Just blasts away any food between my teeth. I have several crowns that are hard to floss because they are too close to each other. The only way to clean them is with the flosser. Really worth the money! I got an electrical one and a battery-charged portable one I got off Amazon. The electrical one is super strong. The portable one is good, too.
Oh man I want these. In my opinion flossing feels really satisfying and relieving any feeling of gunk, and these look like they would be even more satisfying My only issue with water flosser is I feel the need to disinfect it pretty thoroughly before and after each use, and dry it out completely between uses due to paranoia about black mold, so it is too time consuming to use daily. I store it upside down with the handle hanging down to encourage any droplets left to drop out, and in a room that isn't high humidity (not the bathroom).
I sterilise mine (and toothbrushes) with baby sterilising solution. I also have a ‘Vital baby nuture pro uv steriliser and dryer’. I’m in the UK but I’m sure you can buy in the USA.
Thank you, Dr. Nemeth, for this informative video. I have tried these "flossalternatives," :) but I can't effectively get them between my teeth without causing discomfort. So I just floss, and thoroughly and vigorously RINSE right after. That makes a huge difference; it is amazing the amount of food particles I see after I floss and then rinse. And of course, my good ol' Waterpik but not as often as I should! :) The only effective flossalternative I've found is "The Doctor's Brushpicks." Inexpensive and I can get them in between some of my teeth but not all.
My mom got waterpik after dentist recommended it to her…now I think I should invest in one since alot ppl love it. The only floss device I like products that have dual floss and pik.
I have crowded teeth and those picks just cannot go in. Recently bought a waterflosser and splashed the whole bathroom so here I am watching this video 😅
Could you do a comparison of dental flosses?. There's waxed, unwaxed floss (which I like because it squeaks when the tooth is clean), satin floss, and "Reach" floss ( that some say is made with forever chemicals). Thanks.
The softpik caused my gums to receed between teeth. Now I have big gaps between teeth at gum line. I wish I never used softpik. I now use a device that quickly shoots out pursts of water. It's improved the health of my gums.
It seems like you were flossing way too roughly. It also may have been due to the Softpik having been too wide for the gap in between your teeth. You want to thoroughly clean in between the teeth and gently stimulate the gums.
Oh, Dr. Nemeth has already made a video regarding this. It seems that your gum may have already been diseased; therefore, when you used the interdental cleaners, and your gum returned to its healthy baseline, it left a gap in between the teeth. ruclips.net/video/dLxDyFvgWO4/видео.html
I have tried several of those. I don't like the proxibrush because the metal wire makes this scraping feeling on my teeth. The Doctor picks seem too fragile and you have to position them properly for it to work. I prefer the soft-picks as it's all rubber and I don't worry about piercing my gums. The advanced soft-picks are nice, but they are about twice the price of the regular soft-picks. I just use the regular which works just as well but doesn't have the extended reach.
I brush daily and floss 3-4x a week and I still have to get a scaling. I’m convinced that my situation could be gene related. I’ve been fighting this for years.
@@eyekandy3000 I am admitting that I am terrible at daily flossing. Nice dress (profile image) I have that same one from Shein. It's beautiful. There are weeks where I floss daily and other days where I am like did I floss let me go do that now.
Flossing daily is hard for me too- didn’t grow up doing it. Always seemed like a suggestion more than mandatory thing but now I’m going to try some of the floss sticks etc for those nights I’m lazy.
My Sonicare and WaterPik are a game changer. It feels like I just went to the dentist every time I brush. I have anxiety about traveling cause I don't have a travel WaterPik. But my Dentist always says I have no tarter or buildup.
The question is, do electric toothbrushes with an up and down vibrations not causing the bacteria's get between the gums and teeth? For example, Philips or Oral B, etc.
Like the accent, so attracted to the eyes, love the beard with the most balance hint of grey…. So I won’t be watching more.. am afraid I ,any just fall in love with this good doctor 😉😆🤣🤣
When I quit using Florida 11 years ago I started brushing my teeth with soap. They have different varieties and flavors of actual tooth so what is going to kill bacteria better than soap? But those tooth soaps can be expensive so I just started using bronner's castile soap.
Nice video. My dentist recommended using the interdental brushes together with dental floss but my teeth are very tight and I always end up with bleeding gums caused by the wire the interdental brushes are made of. I wonder if the soft picks also have these wires?
Doctor, what do you think about the ultrasonic plaque removers/cleaners they sell on amazon ? they aren't expensive, but are they worth it ? Can they do harm ? thanks .
I have a question. Dentists seem to generally recommend interdental brushes, but they don't do all of what flossing does, right? They get the sides of the teeth where the gap is, likely better than flossing; but the brushes on top of that, also get the contact point between the teeth, and also get up under the gum line. Are those 2 additional things not all that important? I can't yet find the relevant information on this. The videos I've seen just don't address it.
Thank Dr. For all this tips and for sharing educational content. U sound a very brilliant dentist. Would be happy to be ur patient but live in the Uk. 😉😊
Funny I legit have all of these, except the first two brushes he showed. And the ones he said are his favorite really are amazing, I got my sister using them now. Plus the water flosser as well.
I think this has inspired me to start flossing. Its around 2am.

Once you start using water floss you'll never feel clean teeth without it. And your dentist will notice when they examine them.
The waterpik is a gamechanger!
Is water flossing safe if there is bone loss 2 degree i am afraid it may push my teeth or affect on its stability
Reham barakat talk to the dentist on this channel not me
My dental assistants always seem kinda disappointed because I have no tartar and my gums don't bleed.
Nemeth.
Salute to Dr,Nemeth for his great clarity on dental care
Bill Nye out here doing the lord’s work 🙌🏼
This is literally the only dentist that recommends a water pik - not sure if this is good or bad? Very confusing but thanks for explaining it to us.
Brilliant. Sometimes floss will pull out lose fillings or bridges.
At long last I find a video that demonstrates how to use the water flosser. I bought one but managed to floss the mirror, vanity and my face before managing to turn it off. As I was disinfecting my washroom I swore I'd never do THAT again. I may just do that now! Thanks
😅 we’re always learning.
You have me convinced, 100% convinced, and I appreciate your good advice.
Never seen a video like this, from a periodontist to boot. Great video and information. Thank you so much, very much appreciated
I used the waterpik highest pressure to try it out and it blew 4 of my teeth straight out of my mouth.. Cant believe you are on the highest pressure level bro, that´s just incredible!
Michael TH I was just about to say 😂
Omg I hope that's an exaggeration. I have knocked fillings out though.
@@tayloranderson456 :D
I'm finally at a number 6. I don't plan on going any higher
In Sweden xylitol is used and decay has dropped to a fraction of our level in America in kids and its also great for older. Drastically reduces acidic saliva which is the real cause of decay/cavities which can be reversed. Healed without fillings.
although i admit being uneducated in this particular aspect, u truly blew my mind with the water floss device. it seems like a must have!
It is!! Just bought mine and I love it
I have bought the soft plastic picks - the brand I’ve bought from calls them dental sticks - because of you and I’m now practicing how to use them ☺️
What's the name
I've used a waterpik for about a year but must say that I noticed, with the help of my dentist and hygienist, that using a sulcabrush and regular floss as well helps a lot too! I use 2 tone plaque disclosing tablets and if I go several days just using the waterpik and electric toothbrush, without floss or sulcabrush, the dye discloses old plaque.
Agree
I really enjoy your videos, they are very informative and help me understand how to use different dental implements correctly. You are very comforting.
Thank you very much for sharing this knowledge. You will save many unsuspecting people from getting gum disease.
I am here after a 3rd top molar tooth removal surgery. I was in so much pain 40 minutes after my tooth extraction! I am not going to floss my teeth but I am going to use a water pik.
Good advice. Even my regular dentist did not go to such detail. Guess RUclips is the ultimate dental advisor on the go.
Thanks Dr. For showing me how to use my dental tool correctly. My periodontal disease has advanced greatly.
And I tried very hard to avoid this problem. I been seeing my dentist every three month for cleaning. And I am so sad. But, you have given me some hope.
This warms my heart! Thank you so much for commenting Jo-Ann!
Jo-Ann Andrews How have u dealt so far with periodontal disease? Did u make a recovery yet?
I hope so
Lmk because I’m in a similar situation unfortunately
Diego Unger Hi, Diego I’ve been using my Waterpik flosser after each meal, flossing after each meal, brushing after each meal. (no snacks).
I added Probiotic formulated for Oral health. I use both products. PRP-DENTAL and PROBIORA PLUS.
I see my dentist in October for a cleaning hopeful I’ll have a better report.
@@jo-annandrews1904 keep us up to date. Good luck.
Thaaaannkkk you doctor!!!! You are helping me get my dental life together. Thank you for your recommendations!
This doc is very good + thorough.
Thank you for your videos. I just bought some of them. Picks that going between your teeth and a water pick thank you again
Thanks for sharing these helpful tips
You're welcome!
I use exact same water pick on highest setting would like it stronger but its fine....and he trees are great..Thanks
Oh man I want these. In my opinion flossing feels really satisfying and relieving any feeling of gunk, and these look like they would be even more satisfying
My only issue with water flosser is I feel the need to disinfect it pretty thoroughly before and after each use, and dry it out completely between uses due to paranoia about black mold, so it is too time consuming to use daily. I store it upside down with the handle hanging down to encourage any droplets left to drop out, and in a room that isn't high humidity (not the bathroom).
That would be my concern with the water flosser as well, moisture, mold, and bacteria.
The only floss device I like products that have dual floss and pik.
somehow i knew my generation, would randomly be in the comments saying sum nice about joseph lol. he's my dentist great guy
Thank you so much for your wonderful videos. I wish I lived near you! You're so great at explaining things and I really enjoy all of your videos.
Se me hace imposible passar el hilo dental en las muelas porque uso brackets. Estos cepillos me salvó
I have crowded teeth and those picks just cannot go in. Recently bought a waterflosser and splashed the whole bathroom so here I am watching this video 😅
Dr. Nemeth, thank you for this very helpful information.
Other than brushing twice a day, I use a combination of flossing, Interdental brushes & just recently added water flossing to my nightly routine...😁
You explain so well and it shows you are in the business of educating and helping people. Let me know when you move to ohio.
Once I used the interdental brush and it got stucked between my teeth... It was not nice to unstick it...
Thankyou that's very informative - do you think Chlorhexidine mouthwash or gel helps? Is it safe for prolonged use?
Could you do a comparison of dental flosses?. There's waxed, unwaxed
floss (which I like because it squeaks when the tooth is clean), satin floss, and "Reach" floss ( that some say is made with
forever chemicals). Thanks.
good tips, I have a water pik and yes, I'm always surprised by what comes out after brushing!
I couldn't fit any of these products between my teeth. I will continue using floss and waterpik.
very useful !! but which are the most appropriate for gum recession?? some help here
The softpik caused my gums to receed between teeth.
Thank you for sharing, what should I do if I just find out I have gum disease. What can I do now.
Thank you for these videos! I have been using the wrong technique!
I love those GUMs products, I found messy the waterpick, so I do not use it in regular basis!
I have a water pick that is portable for use in the shower. Purchased on eBay for $36 about a year ago. The others are too messy.
I brush daily and floss 3-4x a week and I still have to get a scaling. I’m convinced that my situation could be gene related. I’ve been fighting this for years.
A very big thanks #drosuma for all you do I mean who could have believed I would be herpes free ,I must admit your herbs are marvelous
You’re supposed to floss at least once daily and brush at least twice a day
@@eyekandy3000 I am admitting that I am terrible at daily flossing.
Try brushing right after you eat and avoiding sugar/simple carbs or swishing with water and chewing xylitol gum after eating.
This really changed my mind on flossing. I'm going to get some of these things and ditch the flossing string.
Wah interesting product. Never knew they exist!
We are so happy to meet yet another good periodontist that recommends the waterpik!! Thank you for educating the community! Excellent video!
Very helpful, thank you! I'm wondering if anyone has tried these products with a permanent retainer?
When I quit using Florida 11 years ago I started brushing my teeth with soap. They have different varieties and flavors of actual tooth so what is going to kill bacteria better than soap? But those tooth soaps can be expensive so I just started using bronner's castile soap.
Do you add any product to the water pick water? I have used Tooth and Gum Tonic. Do you like that product?
My hygenist never mentioned such a product. I use my water flosser and have to go in for a cleaning every 3 months because I have gum disease
I will really like having one of those waterflosser thanks dr
Can they do harm ? thanks .
And what about not eating sugar as the best action to take?
Should I put a little bit of toothpaste on the pick so it will get between my teeth?
I have a question. Dentists seem to generally recommend interdental brushes, but they don't do all of what flossing does, right?
They get the sides of the teeth where the gap is, likely better than flossing; but the brushes on top of that, also get the contact point between the teeth, and also get up under the gum line.
Are those 2 additional things not all that important? I can't yet find the relevant information on this. The videos I've seen just don't address it.
Nothing beats string floss and water pick I use both together
Thank you so much God bless you and your family
You are so welcome
Would you recommend the water flosser for people with receding gums?
He's right about water flossing. It is by far the best way to clean between your teeth.
Is interdental brush can used multiple times or just once ?
This is GREAT ❤😊

Just awesome! I can't wait to make an appointment with you, because I leave near your practice, lucky me!
Amazing! Can't wait to see you
Thank Dr. For all this tips and for sharing educational content. U sound a very brilliant dentist. Would be happy to be ur patient but live in the Uk. 😉😊
Interdental flossers made my gums recede and also made my teeth more sensitive. I hate I ever used them!!!
Love your channel! Learning so much. All dentists should be like you. I have a question: where can I purchase your Perio Mix? Thank You, Joy
Funny I legit have all of these, except the first two brushes he showed. And the ones he said are his favorite really are amazing, I got my sister using them now. Plus the water flosser as well.
My size is 28 but I order 27 but the quality is good even smaller to me but I use and cute not pain I love it
