Thank you so much for this my friend. What you got there and shared with us is deep, rare knowledge to come by. I've went in a TV store to ask about Dolby Atmos compatibility to a LG specialist and even he couldn't tell me the things you put on that video. Cheers and thanks once again
I am just doing 5.1 not bothered about Atmos. I have noticed if you set HDMI output on TV to PCM it comes out Louder than when set to Bitstream. So l use PCM and set AV Receiver to DTS Neu X for Streaming as Netflix Dolby Digital Plus gives out way too Low Dialogue when TV HDMI Output is set to Bitstream
AAC ain’t that bad, one of the best lossy codecs and Apple has the best AAC implementation there is. I‘d really prefer them to stream high quality AAC 5.1 instead of Dolby Digital 5.1 (I believe @384 kb/s) for movies where Atmos is not available (or upgrade to E-AC3 across the board like Amazon Prime for example).
you could have shown that with your TV set to bitstream and that ATV audio with Atmos will still send not regular PCM, but a MULTICHANNEL PCM that gets received by TV as Dolby Atmos…not technically bitstream, but no loss of quality nonetheless and still Atmos as you have demonstrated.
That's only applicable if your going HDMI ARC/eARC back to some audio gear. I'm going optical out back to my audio processor, so in PCM it is limited to 2 channel. TVs need more HDMI ports.
Not necessarily. It depends on what else is in your system and how you use it. For me, it does work much simpler having the devices going into the TV vs. switching through something else.
So it’s a bit like the sound alternative of watching 4K on a 1080p display cos it’s still better encoded even though it can’t show it in all it’s glory 👀
You might be the only person who can help me. I just bought a 100-inch Hisense U7K TV and I'm using a brand new Apple TV 4K+ unit. I have Dolby enabled for everything, but when I'm watching action movies, the sound cuts out for about a second during loud action sequences. This happens every couple of minutes. So far, it only seems to be happening in the HBO app. I've tried searching Apple forums and watching videos, but I can't find any solutions. Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.
Anybody having an issue with Apple TV 4K Dolby Atmos? When audio format is set to Atmos in Apple TV setting sometimes I have audio issues like no dialogue I can hear background sounds but no dialogue.
Hey Jaremy, I enjoy your channel and am still learning for an old guy. Just purchased the Apple 4K TV and the Sony A90K. I would like to integrate both with my Yamaha RX V683 receiver 3.0 system. TV and receiver have ARC. What is the proper way to connect them? I will then watch your videos for settings. Thanks for your time. David
I would probably try to get the sources direct into your TV and go ARC from the TV back to that receiver. Especially if you have any sources that are gaming systems. Honestly though, with just an Apple TV, you could go either way. ATV into the receiver to the TV is just as viable, at least until Apple TV actually takes possible advantage of any real HDMI 2.1 features.
Hi, great video, do all the streaming apps look and sound slightly better through the apple tv box compared to the built in Netflix apps for example, or are they same quality, thanks
Most apps on most devices, I presume, should stream around the same quality. But there may be specific differences, such as some devices may not support Dolby Vision or Atmos in some apps.

I have a soundbar attached to my TV and I use a 4k Apple TV. For some reason PCM sounds much better than Bitstream. Why is that? The sound is even louder on PCM vs Bitstream. I also have an LG TV for when I am changing the settings
Don't mistake loudness for quality. Bitstream on ATV is making the box transcode the audio to lossy Dolby Digital. You don't want that. You want original audio, which for anything non-Atmos will output as multi-channel PCM.
My Apple TV 4K with the latest software update until Nov Mach 18/2024 does not show up Dolby athmos just stereo and Dolby why ? even I can not set up my HomePods just work in Apple TV but when is regular tv not working just tv speakers
Another Point: you connect the Apple TV to your LG and from there to the audio device. I have a soundbar and Apple advices to connect the Apple TV to the soundbar and from there to the TV. I am confused now, what is the better solution? Thanks and sorry for the perhaps silly question.
Better depends on the situation and the gear involved. My audio gear is far away from my display and my audio processor does not have an HDMI input, so I have to go TV back out. In your case, as long as everything is close to each other and your sound bar HDMI passes all the video through properly, then yes, go source to sound bar to TV, and it will work great. However, if the ATV won't output the Atmos stream the sound bar, but it will to your TV (like mine), then you might want to mimic by setup after all.
@@Techthusiasm Thank you so much for the quick and informative response. My TV, Sound bar and ATV are very close to eachother. ATV streaming Atmos is for me difficult to check, but it sounds Great!

I try! It's getting harder and harder. :) You can go either way with this, honestly. It kind of depends what other sources you might have, especially if some are gaming. If you have a mix of video and gaming sources, I prefer going into the TV if possible in order to set up the TV inputs specifically for those sources. If you do go into the TV though, you need to connect another HDMI from the eARC port of the TV to the Anthem to get sound back out.
Thanks for a great video.. it solved my problem with my 5.1 audio receiver via LG 4K TV which does not have Atmos. If I run Prime Video directly from TV, my receiver shows Dolby Digital Plus, but through Apple TV 4K, the stream for the same video shows Dolby Digital. Any reason for this discrepancy?
Isn’t the Dolby atmos badge supposed to come up as it does when the tv detects Dolby vision? I have two HomePods in stereo configuration but never see the Dolby atmos badge
Is it possible to use a HDMI-splitter from the output of the apple tv 4k to split one to the tv Arc-input and one to the beam gen 2 to get Dolby atmos sound from the apple tv 4k? So that you dont need an Arcana device?
I would think so. As long as the EDID is managed so the proper capabilities are seen by the ATV and both devices have similar support for video and audio.
Wow! I have an Atmos system but if I did only have a 2 channel system I would have set it up as Stereo. Setting it up as Atmos is thinking outside the box! Genius level! 💯👴🏽
Too bad that Apple didn't include the ability to stream the hi res content, from Apple Music, via the Apple TV 4K. That would have been the perfect hardware for that use case. Also, if Apple were to have Tidal/Spotify Connect like functionality. Those 2 things would pretty much get me to switch services, even though I'm not an Apple guy.
@@tHeXeKuter this is from Apple's support page..."Select or unselect Lossless. Apple TV 4K currently doesn’t support Hi-Res Lossless (sample rates greater than 48 kHz)."
If you go Apple TV to TV via HDMI and TV to audio system with optical for 2.0, then let the ATV output Atmos and the TV output PCM 2.0 assuming the TV can decode the Atmos internally like my LG does.
Can you do this with 4K disc players? I don’t have overhead speakers but have a Atmos receiver and it down mixes it the Dolby/DTS 5.1 or what have you. Are you losing any audio quality or is it just dropping the two overhead speakers?
How you might use this idea with a disc player depends on other elements of your system, but I don't think it work capitalize on the idea quite as well. If you have a 4K player going into a receiver and then to the TV, you don't really need this concept at all. The disc player should output the core multi-channel lossless audio off the disc already without any "bad" down mixing or handling of it. If you have the disc player going to the TV and then the receiver though, that could change things unless you are using eARC.
I had a Sony X900H and it wouldn't allow me to set Atmos output with the ATV directly connected. I'm not sure if the newer Sony models will allow it. I was quite pleased when I saw that the LG did this.
@@Techthusiasm Thanks for getting back to me: I also figured out that the Sony does not allow me to set Atmos output. I am stuck with LPCM output ATV with PCM setting Sony. Maybe not bad at all, but don’t know how to check the current bitrate with this setting..
Unfortunately, the ATV will deliver some lower bit rates this way than being able to configure to output as Atmos, but it is what it is. I wouldn't fret over it, but I consider this a plus for LG TVs to be able to configure this way.
Using an older 5.1 AVR pre Atmos that features Dolby Pro Logic modes for movies and music. If setting the Apple Tv to Atmos, do you lose the sounds that are intended for Atmos speakers?
I was going to make that same point. If your AVR does not support Atmos I don't think this would work. I don't think many people who have 2.0 or 2.1 or 3.1 would invest in an Atmos receiver. If you do have this setup however it makes a lot of sense.
Dolby Atmos is just meta on a multi-channel audio mix. The meta data tells the processor how to precisely position the audio for your specific system and speaker layout. So, you shouldn't lose anything, except the object meta data. But that older receiver won't take the Atmos signal probably at all. The setup in the video works for me because the LG TV accepts the real Atmos output of the Apple TV and turns it into 2 channel PCM which then outputs from the TV to my preamp via an optical audio cable.
Hey Jaremy, thanks for the video. I have done the changes as you suggested above. However I dont get Dolby Atmos in Apple TV Audio output. I dont understand how it could sound better this way. Youre sending the audio to your receiver through an optical cable which has a much lower bandwidth transfer rate than hdmi.
It depends on your setup. I would still recommend trying to get the Atmos signals from the streams in a 5.1 setup, but you'd want to be using HDMI cabling to carry audio or eARC instead of optical.
i want to connect my 2014 imac 5k to my new samsung q990b 11.1.4 atmos.. can it be done or i should geting apple tv 4k instead connect through hdmi to get fully atmos
Hey, I was wondering about the settings on Apple TV and in particular the audio settings. If you select Dolby Atmos and Netflix is streaming 5.1, should you change the audio setting on Apple TV? Thanks and have a Nice day.
ATV will output whatever the audio might be less than Atmos just fine and this method still works. So if an iTunes movie is in 5.1 or 7.1 Dolby Digital Plus, it will still output that vs. stereo PCM (which is still better), and the TV will still down mix to 2 channel. This works too because everything the ATV outputs is Dolby or PCM, not DTS, which the LG TV does not support.
@@Techthusiasm I imagined so. I got so accustomed to the magic remote I find it hard to transition to a Shield or Apple Tv and handle the stress of two remotes. Especially since I have to constantly use the LG remote to adjust brightness and settings.
My Apple TV 4K will only allow Atmos when the Atmos sound bar is present. Otherwise it will only offer Dolby Digital 5.1 The Apple TV does give the ability to use Atmos. I have my Apple TV connected directly to my Denon Atmos sound bar (it has two HDMIs) so it works correctly for Dolby Atmos.
Apple tv 4k is shit . I have Samsung q930b soundbar and using High speed HDMI . I have set ATV audio to auto atmos . And if i play same content from LG tv apps or firestick they sound much louder and richer. settings ATV audio to 5.1 or stereo is much louder but no way near louder or richer as lg tv apps or firestick. I just gave up on ATV .
I'm still using the DACs in my preamp. The TV is just turning bitstream into PCM. It is just a digital decompression. The digital to analog conversion/processing still happens in my STR. If the TV was passing audio using analog RCA stereo, then yes, that wouldn't be as good.

I dont understand how it could sound better this way. Youre sending the audio to your receiver through an optical cable which has a much lower bandwidth transfer rate than hdmi.
I'm sending only 2 channel audio over optical. It has enough bandwidth to do that lossless as PCM audio.
So probably wouldn’t work as well for a 5.1 set up?
It depends on your setup. I would still recommend trying to get the Atmos signals from the streams in a 5.1 setup, but you'd want to be using HDMI cabling to carry audio or eARC instead of optical.
i want to connect my 2014 imac 5k to my new samsung q990b 11.1.4 atmos.. can it be done or i should geting apple tv 4k instead connect through hdmi to get fully atmos
Get the latest model Apple TV for sure.
@@Techthusiasm does the latest apple tv 4k 2022 support dolby atmos 11.1.4
For streaming apps, yes.
Do i use PCM on my tv if i don't have any speakers and soundbars which i don't?
What is the brand/model of TV?
@@Techthusiasm Phillips
If you can configure the ATV for Atmos while connected to that TV, you should still do that to get the better encoding and higher bit rates.
@@Techthusiasm And again, thank you so much!
Using opitical cable it won’t support Dolby atmos
This is true. But you missed the focal point of the video. 😄
"More bits means more information stored" more information stored-better quality .
Even with your HDMI you are not watching 4k display .
Why do you also have a cursor on the tv?
That's probably from the LG remote. It has a wand/cursor mode.
@@Techthusiasm yes, but can you use the cursor to control the apple tv interface?
No, it's just for the LG TV.
Huh?
Can you be more specific?
Apple tv 4k is shit . I have Samsung q930b soundbar and using High speed HDMI . I have set ATV audio to auto atmos . Only atmos content from ATV is loud and other content without atmos sound very low . And if i play same content from LG tv apps or firestick they sound much louder and richer. settings ATV audio to 5.1 or stereo is much louder but no way near louder or richer as lg tv apps or firestick. I just gave up on ATV .
I could be wrong here, but isn’t it better to run the apple through your processor for the much higher quality dacs in there?
I'm still using the DACs in my preamp. The TV is just turning bitstream into PCM. It is just a digital decompression. The digital to analog conversion/processing still happens in my STR. If the TV was passing audio using analog RCA stereo, then yes, that wouldn't be as good.
I see, Thank you for your clarification.
