By the way, I dont have an apple TV but I am basing this info from how my ipad behaves. I just saw another video saying that the apple TV resamples music unlike the bitperfect iphone or ipad going out to a DAC.
Same, I just did it today and I am so impressed. Just listened to miles Davis -Sketches of Spain and rediscovered the album with nuances I did not hear before
Gene thank you very much for this I’ve been using Apple TV for years and usually I’m pretty thorough in diving into the settings. Unbelievably I missed this. I did switch to lossless and noticed a welcomed difference. Thank you very much for your work. 👍🏻
I've owned the 3rd generation Apple TV for nearly two years, and I didn't know this. I checked, and apple music was not set on lossless audio. Thank you very much!!!
My GOODNESS!! Thank you Gene. I am a stickler for these things and I simply cannot believe I missed this. You’re right, it’s buried. Thank you for these invaluable tips videos.

Thanks for posting this video. Yes, both of my AppleTV units were not set for Lossless music. Hi Gene, I have a question: do this works only if I play music on my receiver through two Chanel? If so, what about the sound from music concerts streamed by Netflix, for example Hanz Zimmer in Praga,, from Netflix
Great episode, thanks! What you say about 48kHz/24bit audio is absolutely true. As someone who spends a lot of time in big studios, composing, tracking, and producing music for film and tele, here's a factoid that is hardly advertised: High-quality music tracking, even in big studios, is most often done at 48/24. Why? Because everyone in the industry knows even they can't hear the difference between 48kHz and, say, 96kHz audio. When I deliver final versions of recorded music to publishers, they always make a point of asking for these values. The issue for them is mostly one of storage space; they'd rather keep the files as small as possible. The 48kHz sample rate is basically double the range of human hearing-which about says it all. However, the more important value is the bit rate of 24. Why? Because this is the factor that determines the signal-to-noise ratio (among other things). And once again, 24 bits ensures that the S-N is so ridiculously high as to render the noise threshold so low-even at high volume levels-as to render it relatively inaudible. So in a pinch, even 44.1kHz/24bit is gads better than the same resolution at 16bits (16bits leaves relatively noise levels quite audible, particular at higher volumes), but I recommend always going for 48, whenever available. Great stuff, cheers!
Thank you for the video. Is there any way to enjoy my Apple Music to my stereo system without an Apple TV? In my living room where my Stereo system is there is no TV. Have used both Blu Sound Node and WiiM Pro to enjoy Roon.
I'm here looking for audio output setup since I don't have HDMI capable amplifier, and there's no audio output from my TV's too, no SPDIF, toslink, aux whatsoever. so what should I do to get lossless audio streamed to my amplifier? are there any other chance beside buying HDMI capable amplifier?
Sorry, it looks like it seems obvious to all of you but how do you connect the Apple TV to your audio system without going through your TV which most likely doesn't output 24bits/48khz ? I actually thought it was the point of the video.
I've used both ATV4K from 2021 to the most recent. HDMI plugged into my Yamaha rx-a4a. AppleTV 4k has never ran sampling above 48KHZ. In addition, Dolby Atmos on ATV 4K streams at 48khz by way of ATMOS/PCM, not Dolby Digital or DD+. However, you could disable Dolby Atmos even is the track is Dolby Atmos, the playback will be 5.1. surround if Dolby Atmos is disabled. By the way, Yamaha does playback 24/48, 24/96 and 24/192 when streaming from Amazon Music through Fire Cube products, Quobuz, and Tidal through Nvidia Shield.
This really works! I’ve been struggling with poor quality sound streaming Tidal over WiFi to my Naim Mu-so and instantly have proper hifi sound. Thank you 😊
I love Apple TV and usually have everything set up correctly but had no idea you had to choose lossless. Just changed it on ,y upstairs one and gotta do the downstairs one now!
Gene, does this information also apply to the Apple TV app that comes pre-installed on most Smart TV's nowadays? I have an old standalone Apple TV (pre-4K), which I used before TV manufacturers started including Apple TV as a pre-installed app. At some point, I'm going to buy a new Smart TV, just haven't decided yet. The reason I ask is because if I have access to the "Settings" menu inside the pre-installed Apple TV app on my Smart TV (i.e. I'm not sure if one would even have this level of access to the pre-installed Apple TV app to make any would-be changes), and if the pre-installed Apple TV app can output Apple Lossless audio, that would obviate the need (and added expense) of buying yet another outboard device. Not to mention the necessary additional HDMI and Ethernet cables to connect it all up. Thank you.
The AppleTV+ app that you find on smart TVs and other streamers is for the Apple subscription video streaming service and is separate from the Apple Music app which is included in the Apple TV streaming devices.
Mmmm, yea. I'm not sure to the degree just how "separate" the Apple TV app is from the standalone Apple TV box. Even with that, the AppleTV app still allows you to also stream Apple Music. Since that's the case, and to the point of my question, does it (also) allow you access to its "Settings" menu?
@@alvindawkins5700Quick and direct answer to your question is no. You need the actual hardware, which has certain algorithms that take advantage of the processor that's built into the box, upscaling, decoding, DV, HDR10+, 4:4:4, Atmos, DTS-X...
On my AppleTV 4K updated to the last firmware version 17. whatever I don't get that option for Audio like Audio Quality, there's only Sound Check and that's it! So I'm wondering what are you talking about and which location this works?
My favorite streamer is the nVIDIA shield, but I also have a second generation Apple TV 4K and last year’s Amazon TV Fire TV 4K. I hope that Apple and Amazon will soon allow their devices to stream lossless audio from movie files as well as music files.
For Apple Music app, you have to remove spatial/Dolby right? I noticed that the quality worsens when the songs play in dolby atmos on my sonos arc w one SL's and sub.
Note that according to Apple any music downloaded BEFORE you switched to Lossless will still be played in AAC Lossy and not Lossless audio. I am told you will have to delete previously downloaded music and re-download to get Lossless files.
Hi I'm exploring options for a streamer for another room. I have a Tidal subscription running on an AppleTV 4. I'm guessing Apple doesn't support lossless from other streaming services. Correct me if thats already a good option. However I wish to output via RCA or Toslink to a stereo amp, not HDMI. So thats probably a dealbreaker. Wiim Pro might be the better option. Cheers Peter ☮️🇦🇺
Yep, mine was on AAC. Once I switched to lossless suddenly I was hearing stuff from Rick Braun I hadn’t heard before or that had been more muffled. This is great! While I love Spatial Audio I also love soft jazz from the likes of Rick Braun, Boney James & others which is 2 channel and now sounds even better!
So when you said AppleTV 3rd Gen, I thought you were literally talking about a 3rd Gen AppleTV with Toslink output. So the only setting on that one is 16 bit or auto. It is running its max AppleTV OS 7.9. I do have a 3rd Gen AppleTV 4k but my two-channel audio system doesn't have HDMI. I'm planning to get a proper streamer in the future, but for now, I switch between the AppleTV with Toslink output, to the Toslink input on my DAC and a 2016 Macbook Air running Audivrana output via USB A to USB B of the same DAC. I use Airplay for sending music from my iphone to the AppleTV and I use the Audivrana app on my iphone to control Audivrana on the MacBook. The UI of Audivrana is not very good for getting what I can get from the Tidal app, such as suggested mixes, etc. but I THINK the sound is better. Really tough to say with the sound quality, but theoretically, which should produce the better audio quality? AppleTV via Toslink or MacBook Air via USB?
Hi there, thanks for video. I was wondering if any way to connect Apple TV to my Audio Interface which is connected to Studio Monitor? I currently using iPad to connect Audio Interface to play lossless music.
Thanks for this video, I wonder if Apple will ever make any changes to the SW to connect the Apple TV to an external DAC to get the max out of Apple Music subscription. In fact, Apple Music catalogue is full of very hi-res lossless track, but is very unfortunate that the only way to enjoy that quality, as of now, is to connect an iPhone to an external DAC :( Probably this can be also done with an ipad or a MACBook, but I did not have chances to test it out yet.
THANKS for this video. I have changed Apple Music Settings in my. iPad and iPhone but not in. Apple TV. I assume since this is used for Media, they would have done automatically How naive. I changed the seeings. Thanks again
Can you tell me your signal chain to listen to 2 channel music? Your Apple TV is connected to what and how is it connected? And then what is the rest of the chain and how is it connected? Trying to understand how to connect everything.
@@Audioholics still confused. You said you connected the Apple TV via hdmi to play music or movies? What would you need the Ethernet connection for…what type of data are you referring to? Thanks..
The iOS lossless/hi res lossless Apple Digital Masters are 24/48 on the Apple TV. Blu-ray Audio/Atmos/DTS X are 24/48 lossless. correct? TSR700 owner, powering Bose 301 II's as mains.
Thanks for this Gene. Sadly I've stopped using my ATV4K for music because it caps at 24/48 and those of us paying for Apple Music subscriptions know they have plenty of 24/96 and even some 24/192 content. So now when I want to listen to high res lossless, I use my Mac laptop to a Topping DAC and set the output to match the content via the Audio MIDI setup app on MacOS. I really wish Apple would allow their AppleTVs to support up to 24/192 since they have the files on the server. I do continue to use the ATV4K for Atmos music.
I totally agree. It's too bad ATV4K won't even just serve audio greater than 48kHz from a Mac. It's like capping the resolution of streaming video at 720p, or streaming photos at 500kb. Downsampling greater than 48kHz audio is even an unnecessary processing step... all it has to do is push the full resolution audio through the HDMI cable. The only redeeming factor is 16bit/44,100kHz audio is automatically upsampled to 48,000kHz. My workaround is streaming hi-res audio to my oppo disk player at full resolution, which works great though the interface isn't as elegant as the ATV4K. Seems like a missed opportunity for Apple, though it will be a reason to upgrade is they ever enable greater than 48kHz streaming in an updated ATV4K.
@@toneslotohnz4540I’d like 96KHz too, for the last smidge of quality on that rare album actually mastered in high quality, and so I can slow it down and remix it for fun… but it’s seriously not comparable to resolution or lossy compression bitrate. The reason they resample to 48KHz is almost certainly for some DSP, even quite limited. Many AV receivers even at thousands of dollars resample to 48KHz. If you can A/B 48KHz vs 96KHz blind I’ll eat a bushel of bats :) 256kbps vs lossless is much easier and most still can’t do it.
Can you explain what you said in layman’s terms? Want is this topping DAC? And how do you listen from your MacBook? I thought listening to Dolby atmos via Apple TV is the best possible way to get audio to my audio system
Thanks, Gene! ;-) I spent an hour trying to find those settings. I could not figure out why i could not find the settings / why it did not work. Turns out that it only applies to the Apple TV 4K. ;-) I always wonder why i never have the functionality what RUclipsrs talk about. Apparently i always have an older device than the RUclipsrs have (at least one generation behind > Apple TV HD). Going to buy an Apple TV 4K 6 128Gb tomorrow. Done with being behind... ;-)
Great tips. Mine of course was set to the AAC default. I’ll bet Apple defaults to lower setting in some “what’s best for the average consumer” in terms of data usage and that most 🍏TV users probably don’t have equipment where it would make a big deference to non-audiophiles.
It’s a vanishingly small portion of the population who can blind A/B 256kbps AAC or Vorbis vs lossless even when they hunt for it. Honestly a sane default.
Thx a lot Gene.... One comment from me: Trinnov also keeps the sample rate, processing is done in the sample rate of the source, never any up or downsampling 😇
So how do you know if your music is in fact outputting at 48bit/48khz. If you do not have a dac that actually displays the output you won’t know what is outputting from Apple. If it’s an older AirPlay it will default to AAC so hardwired only for 2 channel.
Gene, WOW!!!! I did not know about this setting. Of course, my Apple TV 4K defaulted to "High Quality" audio. I made the adjustments (It's too late at night for me to be rocking the Theater Room as I type this, so I will check it out tomorrow. Thank you very much for sharing this!
Not sure if it wasn't mentioned somewhere in comments, but there is indeed no streaming service which allows lossless (TrueHD) Dolby Atmos, but there is a streaming device which allows HDMI passthrough and thus TrueHD Dolby Atmos - the Nvidia Shield TV Pro PS: VERY much appreciate the tip, for so long I've apparently been using Apple Music blissfully unaware that this is not the lossless audio I was hoping for !
Very informative. This was hidden setting i didn’t know off. Now it is working loss less is very good for most people hearing. High res is hyped too much then it should
I have an appletv 4k for my ht with a soundbar, separate from my stereo setup where I usually stream music. I would have to get a separate small tv for that stereo just for lossless. Not sure its worth the hassle especially since my older receiver has basic hdmi, not arc.
The AppleTV with Airpod max is pretty awesome for late night movies. It gives you that theater experience with spatial audio. Too bad the Airpod Max does not support lossless audio.
They're! We will just have to wait and hold out for Pro Max 2. The new AirPods Pro 2 (USB-C) version already confirmed having lossless although only for the Vision Pro headset so far, but it will come for sure to Apple TV

Thank you.
This applies to the AppleTV 4K streaming hardware device with the Apple Music app on the AppleTV 4K
Does this work with the Apple TV app and music app on the PlayStation 5
I’m running svs prime pinnacles, emotiva xpa 3 and sb4000 and just realized I didn’t have this set. Thanks 🙏
What about setting the Apple TV to ATMOS... does that then default to ACC or Lossless when the track is only stereo?
On my AppleTV 4K updated to the last firmware version 17. whatever I don't get that option for Audio like Audio Quality, there's only Sound Check and that's it! So I'm wondering what are you talking about and which location this works?
My favorite streamer is the nVIDIA shield, but I also have a second generation Apple TV 4K and last year’s Amazon TV Fire TV 4K. I hope that Apple and Amazon will soon allow their devices to stream lossless audio from movie files as well as music files.
My AVR is connected via optical link (TOS) - will this work also for lossless? No HDMI-Input on my AVR.
Is this video about movie sound quality or strictly Apple Music?? I don't listen to Apple Music does it apply to videos too?
Music only. ruclips.net/video/e0i52I79NaU/видео.htmlsi=2-kt3f3R9n-1c7uL
Changing it to lossless is the first thing I did when I finally bought my first Apple TV last year
For Apple Music app, you have to remove spatial/Dolby right? I noticed that the quality worsens when the songs play in dolby atmos on my sonos arc w one SL's and sub.
Yea don't playback Atmos tracks on non atmos equipment. The downmix never sounds as good as the native stereo mix.
What I am unsure of is if you send music (using Apple Music set to lossless) from an iPhone to the Apple TV does it remain lossless?
Yikes, not all of my Apple TVs were set correctly. Thanks for the tip!
In fact, Apple Music catalogue is full of very hi-res lossless track, but is very unfortunate that the only way to enjoy that quality, as of now, is to connect an iPhone to an external DAC :(
Probably this can be also done with an ipad or a MACBook, but I did not have chances to test it out yet.
Thank you for helping with this setting. I'm now lossless 👍
Thank you sir. My phone was playing better quality music and was so confused , finally adjusted it
THANKS for this video.
AppleTV hdmi connected to my AV Processor.
@@Audioholics Thanks. You mentioned the Ethernet connector? What is that for?
Ethernet is for data. I prefer hardwire over wireless whenever possible.
Hi! Nice video :) i have a nvidia shield pro. How do I get lossless audio on that one? On tidal for example. Thanks!
See! A year later your info so important! Just switched mine! Thank you!
Streaming from the Apple TV of Tidal app is that giving out hight quality?
Thanks, Gene! ;-)
I spent an hour trying to find those settings. I could not figure out why i could not find the settings / why it did not work. Turns out that it only applies to the Apple TV 4K. ;-)
I always wonder why i never have the functionality what RUclipsrs talk about. Apparently i always have an older device than the RUclipsrs have (at least one generation behind > Apple TV HD). Going to buy an Apple TV 4K 6 128Gb tomorrow. Done with being behind... ;-)
Gene thanks a bunch, just switched my Apple TV to lossless. God speed.
Both of my Apple TV set to AAC. And I’ve those for years! Thanks!
Thanks again! Love y’all’s channel, always giving great tips.
It also works for your phone! I switched it and notice a difference.
If you have an “Apple TV 4K” first gen on iOS 17 .. your settings apps music screen DOES NOT have these settings
Where are the settings then TvOs17?
I just checked. Mine doesn’t have it
Gene, WOW!!!! I did not know about this setting. Of course, my Apple TV 4K defaulted to "High Quality" audio. I made the adjustments (It's too late at night for me to be rocking the Theater Room as I type this, so I will check it out tomorrow. Thank you very much for sharing this!
Not sure if it wasn't mentioned somewhere in comments, but there is indeed no streaming service which allows lossless (TrueHD) Dolby Atmos, but there is a streaming device which allows HDMI passthrough and thus TrueHD Dolby Atmos - the Nvidia Shield TV Pro
PS:
VERY much appreciate the tip, for so long I've apparently been using Apple Music blissfully unaware that this is not the lossless audio I was hoping for !
Thanks Man! I followed your instructions and to my surprise. My Apple TV audio wasn’t setup correctly but thanks to you it is now. Thanks Again.
I don’t have these settings on my ATV 4K 2nd gen. Is it because I’m no longer subscribing to Apple Music?
Very informative. This was hidden setting i didn’t know off. Now it is working loss less is very good for most people hearing. High res is hyped too much then it should
What kind of microphone are you using??
Can’t wait for this to be opened up to Spatial Audio. That will be amazing!
Congrats on having the most links for the audio genre.
Not sure how but my Apple TV was setup correctly for lossless audio. No change was needed for me. Love my Apple TV, it just works!
You can only get audio out via hdmi, no coaxial or toslink?
what is toslink? my system has only rca inputs
How old is Apple TV 4K 3. generation?
Thanks, I didn't even know that setting was buried in the App settings, fixed now and my AVM90 confirms!
