Excellent information. The step by step explanation is crystal clear and very useful to decide how to proceed to get Hi Res in our phones. One of the best videos I have watched on audio quality. Thanks a TON for the video.
I agree with everything in the video and it's very well put together BUT i am a music producer, i have been putting my music to streaming services since 2017 and trust me "so call hi res audio" is not something crazy from the quality you already hear on streaming services. Just make sure that you are listening at the highest quality your preferred streaming service provides. I do the final mixing and mastering on my songs and trust me there is hardly any difference between the final WAV file we provide to streaming services and the live track on the service. yes, i won't deny that they do some sort of processing to all the songs that they upload but its not something noticeable to casual music listeners. all the things mentioned in this video is very true but you don't really need it. spend your money wisely. the quality of your listening expereince depends largely upon what earphones you use and not on if you have DAC or not. I have a decent setup for this because i make music and i need it. i own fairly industry standard headphones and trust me if you hear the music on that headphones (with interface) you might hate it because casual earphone companies alter the sound so much so that now you are acoustomed to certain sound of the song. the bass is so high in the cheap brands that it doesn't matter even if you have DAC or not. Its gonna be bad. the worst streaming platform to listen to any kind of music is soundcloud. they are the one that alter the original song alot and in a bad way. Buy DAC but don't expect crazy changes unless you have really really high-quality headphones, then you probably need it. better buy any Oneplus, Samsung , or Sony TWC. It's good enough.
Thank you sir, for speaking the truth. Just getting a DAC won't make much difference. Any type c earphones will do a decent work as most flagship phones and some budget ones do provide atleast 24bit audio processing on the device itself.
I think the key is within your own comment: “casual music listeners”. If you clicked on this video it means you are looking for that extra, no matter how little it could be. Whether one is disappointed by the result or not is completely independent to the curiosity of getting everything out of the service you’re paying to listen to high definition audio. I do agree a good pair of headphones should be the first step towards experiencing high definition audio and it will get you 80%-90% of the way there but a lot of these high end headphones need an amp to take advantage of them and there are plenty of DAC/amp combos so might as well get the DAC at that point.
Very happy with your presentation. Very informative. Just like a textbook. Keep up the good work. Learned so much from Indian side of hi resolution audio. Thank you

One of the best explanations that I ever saw in RUclips regarding the subject. Congratulations. I have a question, tho. Where did you get the information that recent versions of Android are not downsampling everything to 48khz any longer? Keep up the good work. Love from Brazil!

@@headphone_zone you should do a video showing that, because there is no info about it on the internet, so your video would be the first source to test it and confirm it. I'll test in my Hip DAC 2 today to see how the led colors will change depending on the sample rate. But I believe that the Apple Music app should ask Android System to use the DAC as the source in exclusive mode, just like Tidal app does.
@@headphone_zone I tested using the Apple Music app + Hip Dac 2, and I can confirm that the LED will change to white when playing Hi-Res Lossless. Amazing video, very informative! As an audiophile I want the best sound. Well boy was I wrong 😅 I've been streaming using RUclips music for many years already. @@KimWentworth-y8e where did you hear that nonsense? Apple Music uses Apple's own ALAC codec (up to 24 bit/192 kHz) instead of FLAC. FLACs are not supported by iTunes (and the standard music app), but can be played through 3rd party apps. Obviously, you need a DAC for that, since the $9,99 Lightning to 3.5mm adapter limits output to 24 bit/48 kHz. So if you want to make your life easier, get ALAC files for iPhones or use a different app, problem solved. On iPhone 15 models it's obviously easier, since they have USB-C and there's no need for weird Lightning-dongles.
I have a smartphone with hi res audio supported 3.5mm jack and I subscribed to Apple Music and bought a hi res earphone to enjoy hi res songs. And it was worth buying.❤
I have 1 question, answer plz. I have iPhone 15 which is now with USB-type C. If I purchase Apple usb C headphone, so will it give sound quality like DAC or I have to purchase DAC with it ? With DAC Apple USB C will work or I need apple 3.5mm headphone??

I'm happy to report that the various Android apps also work in Australia, and I'm 99% sure that they will work in Singapore, Thailand and even Malaysia ;) Seriously, your 'Hinglish' is excellent, unlike some of your countrymen - keep up the good work.
Very well explained! On the other hand, I must admit, being 59 y.o. I can't tell the difference between hi-res and cd. I even can't tell the difference between a cd and a good AAC or MP3 file. So, for me, the most important thing is to look for good recordings and simply enjoy them. A good dongle DAC makes a difference in resolution, stage and level, but thank God I can save money not going crazy with the numbers due to I can't tell the difference between something very good and something everybody tell is better. Perhaps there's too much marketing with all this, at least for a lot of people like me.
Absolutely, age is just a number, and the joy of music transcends the nuances of formats! It's fantastic that you prioritise the essence of good recordings and the enjoyment they bring. In the audiophile hobby, the numbers and audio formats can be overwhelming. A good dongle DAC can indeed enhance the overall experience without getting caught up in the intricacies that might be imperceptible. Here's to the timeless pleasure of great music, no matter the format or resolution. Keep the music playing 🎶👂
Very few people can actually tell the difference. It's mostly marketing and the placebo effect but no one will admit to it after buying super-expensive snake oil
@SergioGarcia-jg3yy Unlike eyes, ears don't naturally deteriorate with age unless they have been abused (tinnitus) or you have a disease. There is one aspect of hearing that does deteriorate however, and thats high frequency. A young person can hear 20k hertz, that response goes down from then on. At 60 I can only hear 10k hertz. The scary bit there is that that's not far of the high notes of a piccolo.
Saw this video in the morning. Tried Apple Music with best possible quality, said bye bye to Spotify and moved to Apple Music. Migrating playlist will take time, but worth the pain. Thanks guys ❤

Much needed video. Thanks Raghav for such an insight. Already bought a Fiio ka3 on your recommendation from headphone zone. Surely our partnership in listening to quality music will go long.
Huge warning for the ifi go, I had a huge amount of interference when using it with my phone. It was picking up my phone searching for service and causing ear piercingly loud static bursts to happen on the audio track. The only way to fix it was to turn on airplane mode. I ended up returning it and getting the qudelix 5k instead, highly recommend it. It is more expensive at about $100 but is super worth it.
Bravo for this video. It is clear and complete. I confirm the advice given therein. I have an iphone with Quobuz as my streaming service. The high resolution does not really bring any technical gain by the file format but above all allows access to the master soundtrack. Mastering engineers usually compress the sound signal to make CD formats. The sound has less dynamics, less life. It is the production of the musical piece that is important, more than the technical characteristics of the lossless files. HIres formats just allow access to audio masters that have not suffered the loudness war. Learn about this subject and you will understand why some songs are so tiring and unpleasant to listen to despite your earphone and your quality DAC.
Superbly put. I think a well recorded/mastered track is really the key ingredient. A badly recorded and a poorly mastered track isnt going to sound good, no matter what resolution we're listening to it on.
Hi , how did you do the payement for qobuz music streaming service , because when I do I get is your bank has refused the payement ,could you tell me the way so even I can purchase my favourite songs...😊😊😊
@@RaghavSomani-HeadphoneZone, why do you call your nation by the name given to it by the British (from the PERSIAN word “Hindustan”)?☝️ What’s wrong with its PROPER name (Bhārata)? 🇮🇳
We understand your hesitation to switch streaming services, especially with such an extensive music library. It's quite a commitment to migrate all those tracks! You can always explore other options in parallel and see if they suit your preferences better. Sometimes, a fresh start is worth it if it significantly enhances your audio experience. I took the recommendation and switched from Spotify to Apple. I used Soundiiz to transfer the library. It costed Rs.430 and worked fine. I still had to remove some duplicate music that was added to Apple library 🤷 and add some music which wasn't. Soundiiz provided a csv containing per track info which were and weren't transferred. It's easy to get the information about which track was not added using Excel. I transferred my playlists & liked songs (1474 tracks) and did all of the above in under an hour.
Thanks for the succint and clear explanation not just for what but also the why. Really appreciate. May I request to please also share your view about using USB Audio Player Pro app? How would that fit in to the scheme of things with the USB DAC/AMP?
I see a lot of people using the app for the convenience it offers in using a portable USB DAC Amp. So i think a lot of audiophiles would be happy to recommend the app. For me personally, i just plug and play and use Apple music.
USB Audio player pro..doesn't use android output system or simply it doesn't let the android touch the audio in anyway...so USB Audio player doesn't convert anything internally in the device and just send the digital signal to the DAC like a passthrough stream without altering the signal...and the Digital signal is converted to analog using external DAC. which makes it a bit-wise perfect i.e not a single bit is changed.. but it only does the passthrough of digital stream. But the quality of the audio depends on the speakers you connect to the DAC. if they can play every bit perfectly you get exact music offered by the artist...if the speakers are bad you won't get the details...But it is for the older Android versions...on android 14 and successors there is a native android option to passthrough the digital signal to the external DAC without any alterations..using 'AudioMixerAttributes' class and it works the same way as USB audio player pro...you can read the blog post regarding that here 'android-developers.googleblog.com/2023/05/android-14-beta-2.html' in lossless usb audio section.. and whatever he said in the video that comparing audio resolutions to video is not a correct comparision.. audio works differently..you cannot compare 16bit/44.1KHz as 1080p and 24bit/96KHz as 4k...because a naked eye can easily find difference between a normal 1080p stream and a 4k stream but as per audio files according to "Nyquist-Shannon sampling theorem" you should have double the sampling rate of the sound pitch you want to record so considering 44.1KHz you can record 22KHz sound and there is not point in going beyond that because Upper boundary of human hearing is 20KHz. but higher sampling rates can be helpful in professional audio mastering such has when you slow down a sound of 96Khz audio and 48KHz audio to half speed you have less noise in 96KHz audio and have more noise in 48KHz audio...but for normal hearing 16bit/44.1KHz is more than enough..and so less people can spot the difference between a 16bit and 24 bit audio in special studio with complete silent with high end speakers...if you play spotify's 320kbps vorbis audio and an apple music 16bit/48KHz using whatever the equipment in the above video he showed and listened on a headphones in a bus or metro or in normal room noise..you won't hear any differences at all..if anyone says he can hear difference he on powder or whatever....At the end of the day if you want to enjoy Hi-Res audio buy better speakers because they are the deciding factors of good sound reproduction...don't be like people who listens to Apple music 24bit/192KHz audio with their airpods..
@@blackhole-tq2hv Thx for the information, May i ask a question I am considering to buy an iem, (tangzu wan'er) do I need to buy an external dac (hz x ddhifi) to get a good audio output? I agree, like and appreciate all your efforts that u hav put in sir. 👏❤ The only thing that came to my mind after watching this video is y it has become so pricy/costly to listen to just a good music? ☹️🤔 And y do companies hav not yet created a simple solution to fix this (keep on adding devices or subscriptions to listen high-res) with just a button/toggle. Boom that should now enable us to listen to the high-res/loss less audio experience given the hardware! 🤞
Hey there, that is an interesting point of view, and hopefully, as time progresses, we shall even reach that point. For now, a subscription is a way to go with Apple Music costing 99/month, making it accessible to everyone.

I would really appreciate if you can make a video on how to listen to hifi music in cars especially in the ones which do not have 3.5 mm jacks anymore. ( this is the applicable to most new cars )
Well, im really not a car audio expert. But if your connecting your music to the car audio system using bluetooth, your basically going to use the in-built DAC in the car audio system. Your best bet is to try using a Music CD instead of Bluetooth, and im pretty sure you'll hear a big difference.
In theory 48khz sample rate can quantize frequencies up to 24khz .... if you can listen above than, that you are listening to ultrasonic waves I believe (congrats!) Only a small percent of humans can listen up to 20khz Audio hobby is such a flex. This helps brands to put on a golden hi-res audio sticker at a high price
Hey there, you're correct about the technical aspect in the frequency domain of audio. Although the bottom line is that higher bit rates produce better-sounding encoded files, and ultimately your ears must be the judge, based on the type of material you are encoding. Just as an experiment spend an afternoon encoding the same song to different formats and different constant and variable bit rates. Listen for the subtle and not-so-subtle changes that the lossy compression introduces. Be sure to keep referencing the raw file to remember what it should sound like.
It's not just the higher frequencys that the ears hear, the harmonics shape the music, you don't listen to just sine waves, music is a lot more complex ans requires the higher frequentlys to reproduce they complex signals, must people above 50 years cannot hear above 8k but still appreciate the accuracy of the reproduced signal.
Hi Raghav, I have an LG G7 that has an inbuilt Quad-DAC. I wanted to know if Apple music can bypass the Android limitation without any external DAC in this case. Also I came across the fact that using Poweramp, the AUX mode supports hi-res upto 32/192 with quad DAC enabled. Yet I am not sure if Apple music streamed wired allows this feature?
lovely video! have had Apple music since time immemorial however even with lossless streaming on, Idk how to play it and where to play it (which instrument of audio output), this video helped me out with that - with the DAC point
We're glad you found the video helpful! Navigating lossless streaming can be a bit tricky at first, but once you have a setup with a DAC, you'll appreciate the audio quality. If you have any more questions about playing lossless music or optimising your audio setup, feel free to ask!
Fantastic video Raghav! Lucid and informative AF! I have an advanced audio set-up in my cars, but I'm streaming fron YT Music Premium/Spotify Premium through Android Auto/Apple CarPlay. While your point about Apple Music's losseless option is right - it is superior to Spotify/YT Music Premium - i was wondering how I get such good SQ in my car. Is it because my Pioneer headunit + DSP overrides my phone's DAQ through type-C Android Auto?
Are you running active set up with your dsp? What amps, speakers and dsp are you using? Also have you tried hi res files on that at all? The reason I ask is because I would like to do active 3 way in my car but I don't have any hi res files (that is why I am here I guess) and I have never heard hi res in car audio. However your comment about youtube/Spotify on AndroidAuto is giving me hope now, thanks 👍
Hi Raghav! Very informative and engaging video, as always :) I noticed something recently - when connecting my phone (OnePlus Nord) to my Topping E30 and using Amazon Music (subscription), the display jumps to 192.0 (from the usual 48.0 when using RUclips Music or Spotify). I'm assuming this means that Amazon Music - at least in India - is HD by default, at 192 kHz/24-bit? While Amazon Prime is a bit more expensive than Apple Music, a lot of people already have the former subscription for shopping and/or Prime Video. Please correct me if I'm wrong :)
Yes, Amazon has been doing some funny things with their Music app in India. Ive seen their sample rates show up as 192 for most tracks too. But i dont think i can hear the difference, certainly on most tracks. Looks like someone at Amazon just made the default to 192 without realising it.
@@RaghavSomani-HeadphoneZone interesting thought. To be honest, even I haven't noticed any difference in quality with Amazon Music. I initially attributed it to my ears being too old, or to my setup being too basic (Topping E30 - DT770 Pro 32 Ohm) :)
Not many artists record in high resolution. So listening in high resolution in streaming services doesn't mean you are listening to what the artists intended. CD quality is what most artists record in. Listening to a poorly recorded album in higher resolution doesn't mean the Sound quality is improved.
You never listen to what the artist intended. To put it better, its just a marketing gimmick. Most of them are not even mixed by the artists. And the person mixing is just one guy who was mixing it on some highly neutral speaker and an average listener is bound to not like that. Also the way it was mixed does not automatically make it a standard to be heard. Headphones are tuned differently for a reason.
One of the best informative video I seen in awhile but can you please make a video on samsung seamless codec and tidal, you haven't talked about them in this video.
Pro tip: you dont need external DAC for Samsung S series, any sony and LG smartphones ( unless you use high impedance headphones like 770 pro). Infact any smartphone now-a-days which cost more than 40K will come with a good inbuilt DAC 👍
@@SiddharthSharma-xe6yc hmm interesting. I didn't know that. Can you please share the source of this info ? What is the point of Quad DAC, if o/p via type C is capped 🤔
@@SiddharthSharma-xe6yc and almost all high end phones don't have an SD slot. I don't know why they didn't even bother to put an SD slot in high end phones but they put it on low and mid end phones.
I use formats that are easy above CD quality. .dts and .dtshd. and pure 24bit wav. And listen to it in planar or kz 12 driver IEMs. I use a modded Mx player that bypasses Android's downsampling kernel. Aural experience is pristine and heavenly. Some cannot do this even in the near future. TIDAL is a service that provides high quality streaming beyond cd quality. But not in India.

Which cheap but quality DAC would you recommend?

@@headphone_zone you should do a video showing that, because there is no info about it on the internet, so your video would be the first source to test it and confirm it. I'll test in my Hip DAC 2 today to see how the led colors will change depending on the sample rate. But I believe that the Apple Music app should ask Android System to use the DAC as the source in exclusive mode, just like Tidal app does.
@@headphone_zone I tested using the Apple Music app + Hip Dac 2, and I can confirm that the LED will change to white when playing Hi-Res Lossless.

Seriously, your 'Hinglish' is excellent, unlike some of your countrymen - keep up the good work.

Huge warning for the ifi go, I had a huge amount of interference when using it with my phone.

We understand your hesitation to switch streaming services, especially with such an extensive music library. It's quite a commitment to migrate all those tracks! Simple to transfer library. Takes minutes
Excellent coverage buddy, thank you!

In theory 48khz sample rate can quantize frequencies up to 24khz .... if you can listen above than, that you are listening to ultrasonic waves I believe (congrats!)
Only a small percent of humans can listen up to 20khz
Audio hobby is such a flex.

Hi Raghav! Very informative and engaging video, as always :)
I noticed something recently - when connecting my phone (OnePlus Nord) to my Topping E30 and using Amazon Music (subscription), the display jumps to 192.0 (from the usual 48.0 when using RUclips Music or Spotify).
Amazon music HD is not yet launched here in India.
@@dipanjanbiswas4924 you're right, technically it hasn't. However, the sample rate seems to be MUCH higher than RUclips Music or Spotify.

Best explanation I ever seen, Thanks. Subscribed
Awesome, thank you!
Wow! By far the best video. Good job!

What is the point of Quad DAC, if o/p via type C is capped 🤔
But now a days phones as low as 23k don't have headphone jack. Hiw to counter that ?
@@SiddharthSharma-xe6yc and almost all high end phones don't have an SD slot. I don't know why they didn't even bother to put an SD slot in high end phones but they put it on low and mid end phones.
Is the DAC on the Asus Zenfone 9/10 any good? That phone is the rare flagship that got a headphone jack
Does a Type C earphone with inbuilt DAC give a same quality as a seperate Hi Res DAC?
I use formats that are easy above CD quality. .dts and .dtshd. and pure 24bit wav. And listen to it in planar or kz 12 driver IEMs. I use a modded Mx player that bypasses Android's downsampling kernel. Aural experience is pristine and heavenly. Some cannot do this even in the near future. TIDAL is a service that provides high quality streaming beyond cd quality. But not in India.
Can you tell me more about the MX player?
This is very helpful for someone who is getting into music, I have one question will I need dac if I have dolby atoms in phone? is dac still big jump from phone dac with dolby ?
We're glad you found the video helpful! Dolby Atmos in your phone can enhance your audio experience, but adding a dedicated DAC can still make a significant difference. A dedicated DAC can provide higher-quality audio processing, better amplification, and improved sound clarity, even with Dolby Atmos. It's worth trying a dedicated DAC to see how it complements your audio setup and takes your music experience to the next level. Enjoy your journey into the world of music! 🎧🎶
