    I gave a Dolby Atmos a go on tidal, never again not in the near future anyway! I think they got a lot of catching up before they get anywhere near the beautiful imaging of 2 channel stereo.

      I think the main problem is a lot of the music in Atmos right now was mastered in Stereo and is just being remixed to Atmos for the gimmick factor. Music that's mastered in Atmos by engineers that know how to utilize it is breathtaking, but the catalog for it isn't very big yet.

    I'm very interested, also a Marantz SR6015, but no Atmos speakers yet. Dolby Atmos is object orientated, so of course they need new mixes completely from the ground up. I'm afraid what Apple is doing, giving it a "sort of" surround Dolbyish Atmosish flavor so people say, Yes it works and they can say/advertise, we have Atmos and sell Apple TV 4k's and Apple Music. But exactly what you determined, it all sounds far way and definition and positioning is gone.

    I would say that the problem is apple tv, and what it is made of, but when it comes to theater sound or sound 9.1 channels, atmos presents problems with cut sound in the background, due to direct streaming from apple's servers, you recognize yourself better and better soundtrack on 4k blueray because sound is embedded and is distributed and not compressed like m3

      I mean, if you run into anything that’s labeled as Hi-Res Lossless on Apple Music, that already means it should be 24 bit/192 kHz ALAC audio. Here’s a playlist I found that claims they’re all Hi-Res:

    Does your AVR correctly recover 16/24 bit and 44/48 kHz output from the Apple TV with Apple Music? My Anthem reports 16 bit 48 kHz no matter the source track. I’m wondering if it’s an ATV limitation or because I’m passing audio back via eARC on my LG CX.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  2 года назад

      Could be an eARC issue? 😬🤷‍♂️ I haven’t had to troubleshoot that particular issue, so I’m not positive why that’s happening

      Music is typically distributed at 44.1kHz, so if you're distributing on CD or for online music streaming services, 44.1 is where it's at. 48kHz is typically used for audio recorded for video, so if you're using something that will be synchronized with video it's gonna be at 48kHz.

    Nice work Ealan, totally agree with your thoughts. There are are a few tracks you come across that make you go "shit yes this is the future!" next track makes you go "this is shit..." And yeah the Hip Hop playlist its soo terrible, and I had thought maybe my system isn't good enough to hear these tracks as they were intended? But that confirms its not just me.
    I kinda think its one if those things that can take a great album to another level if done really well, and I would just keep it as an occasional experience not necessarily on everything just for the hell of it.
    It really has the potential to put people off some albums altogether, some sound soo bad its distractingly hard to listen to let alone enjoy.

    Is Apple TV 4K the only way to play Atmos with an AVR? Is there a way to do it with an iPad using the lightning to USB adapter? There’s some discussion on Computer Audiophile, but it’s not clear how to do it. I have a 9.2 setup, using a high end Denon AVR. Do I need to use the digital inputs on the AVR, or is the multichannel information preserved on the output of an external dac connected to the iPad?
    Thanks

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Год назад

      Does your AVR support Apple Airplay 2? If so, that's streaming music over Wi-Fi instead of bluetooth, which should still support Dolby Atmos music once processed through your AVR. Try that first? Otherwise, yes, the next step would be to connect it via lightning to USB and choosing that input on the AVR.

    • @ratman626
      @ratman626 Год назад

      @@ealanosborne it does do Airplay 2, but if I believe various web sources, Airplay won’t do the maximum hi res 24/192 Atmos material
      It sounds pretty good though. It may be my old boomer ears, but I have a hard time hearing the difference between CD quality and hi-res. However, that was using older high res material, which is often just upsampled 16/44.

    • @ealanosborne
      @ealanosborne  Год назад

      @@ratman626 If I'm not mistaken, Dolby Atmos music and Hi-Res music are two different things. Dolby Atmos music takes your ordinary stereo tracks and upmixes them into a more immersive surround sound format. Hi-Res Lossless on the other hand is extreme hi-fidelity tracks, but I'm pretty sure they are still delivered only in stereo. Your typical Atmos movie soundtrack is 24 bit/48 kHz, so I imagine that might be the same with Dolby Atmos music. In which case, streaming it via AirPlay 2 would still sound great. I'm still learning about this, too, my friend. So many numbers to keep track of. :)

    • @ratman626
      @ratman626 Год назад

      Update - There was definitely some Atmos sugar playing Apple Music with AppleTV into a recent Denon (750) with 5.1
      Main theater system is 9.2 & I wanted to play Atmos in there. Airplay 2 is allegedly limited to 16/44 and Apple encodes at up to 24/192, so I found this video looking for a way.
      First try was to use the iPad connected via a Dragonfly dac that can measure data rates, shown by the color of the dragonfly light on the DAC. Everything came out green, 44, even with higher res Apple Music streams. It sounds pretty good, but doesn’t make good use of all the surround channels.
      To bypass the Dragonfly DAC, and go straight to the digital Atmos dedoder, I used a $10 Amazon generic USB to toslink adapter and direct to a Denon digital input.
      Excellent mix. Sounds awesome with 9.2 speakers. (B&W LCR). The stream info is nowhere to be found, but 44/16 is sweet.
