Excellent and informative introduction to the Apple TV 4K. A couple of things that I particularly like about this steaming box that you didn’t mention is the scrolling feature to quickly and accurately fast forward or reverse on many of the apps. I also think the ability to switch quickly and easily between various different apps is another big benefit of the ATV4K box and provides much greater flexibility than using the built in apps on a smart tv or an Amazon fire stick for example where you have to completely exit one app before accessing another.
Great video! Very comprehensive and easy for beginners. I was probably underutilizing the Siri function before, will use that more. One suggestion to include, as some mentioned below, is settings in the “Video and Audio” section around SDR and HDR. These are important to understand and set properly to get a good experience, Apple actually makes things pretty easy in this area. Main issue is that most streaming content is a mishmash of SDR, HDR and Dolby Vision. Also most menus for streaming services are SDR. So forcing the video to Dolby 4K or HDR 4K on Apple TV always will cause SDR content and menus to look terrible and blown out in a lot of cases. General advice in most cases is to set the output on Apple TV to “4K SDR” and then turn on the “Match frame rate” and “match dynamic range” settings to on. This will allow SDR content, such as menus, to be displayed as intended and then auto switch to HDR or Dolby when these frames are detected.
I agree with Andrew, this should be the introduction video installed on apple tv, I have had mine for over a year, and now I don't have to cuss at the remote select button anymore! thank you!
Excellent video as always. One quick question. If I watch a program on AppleTV and pause the show. If I come back a day or two later, there doesn't seem to be an option to resume the show, it always goes back to the beginning? How do I resume the program? Thanks
This is brilliant, cheers! I've had my Apple TV for 2 years now but had no idea about all these remote functions. Truth be told, I wasn't using my Apple TV+ submscription enough simply because I found the interface hard to navigate. So I really appreciate your tutorial!
2 notes: 1. Using the iPhone as a controller lets you use the iPhone keyboard rather than the hunt-and-peck style for typing. This is useful for things like passwords. Of course, using the iPhone also gives you access to whatever password management software you use. 2. Making the Apple Photos app the first app on the Top Shelf gives you an initial screen that is an 'Up Next' style scroll of photo memories. I find this more pleasing than the choices available from the Apple TV app.
Excellent video! I just got my first Apple TV yesterday and this video was very helpful. Thank you for speaking in a normal, and calm manner. Too many channels deliver content in an exaggerated, and fake “excited” manner. New subscriber!
The more expensive model support thread as well. Thread is a smartphone network protocol connecting your smart home devices and is a very good feature to have if you build an Apple smart home. Also the Apple TV can act as a home hub enabling you to control all HomeKit devices when away from home
I think in playback you totally skipped the scrubbing feature. One of my favorites. When you are paused (in supported apps) you can hold your finger on the outer ring of the remote and without lifting your finger rotate around the ring to scrub forward or backward as fast or as slow as you like.
Ive owned all models from beginning. As photographer and iphone photo educator i hope you will add more about using the Photos App . Thanks, love your work, keep it going!
Love your work fella. One thing I’d hoped to see you cover (and potentially learn some new tips about) is using the computer icon for connecting to Apple TV libraries on other macs on the local network. I’m sure there are plenty of people who use this feature :)
Me too! I can’t get it connected to an external drive on a computer on the same network to easily play video content (that I have created for example in Final Cut Pro and exported to disk on my iMac. Why isn’t this easy? Furthermore, it isn’t easy to mirror what is on my iMac screen onto my 4K TV via the Apple TV. Would love to learn how to do both!! Love your content!
I'm a Android guy (Pixel) but went for yhe Apple TV 4k (ethernet model). I wanted the best for my new flagship Q990c soundbar and really looking forward to this. Was close to getting the cheaper Firestick 4k max but I really wanted an ethernet connection. By the way, you're presentational style is sensational. Almost therapeutic 😊
I have both of those and Apple TV blows that and everything else out of the water by Miles and Miles. It’s not even funny.. you get so much more with the Apple TV compared. The picture quality instantly is fantastic. All the other streaming sticks are a joke compared
You didnt cover the 'top shelf' functionality. Really useful for streamlining AppleTV usage. If an app is in the 'dock' i.e. the top row, it MAY have additional 'top shelf' functionality. Netflix does, the AppleTV app does, etc etc. You can just hover over an app on the dock then above it will show pertinent details such as the TV app showing your up next list without having to go into the TV app itself.... Very useful to know and understand.
I didn’t think it was.. but I just searched it in the App Store on my Apple TV and yes.. they do have it to download as an app.. Tidal. Must be fairly recent because I don’t remember them having that before only Apple Music.. I could be wrong though. But yeah, it’s on there.
I like the Apple-TV ecosystem. Many benefits to mention but the best one is I only have to install apps on one device and it installs on all my other ones.
Sadly I have to disagree. The ShieldTV Pro can do many things way better, but usability wise the Apple TV is way way better than the shield. I really wish my Apple TV could do all things my Shield can.

Thanks for talking through all these features, still some I wasn‘t aware of yet. Just wanted to mention the sync option (or so) which would power on or off connected devices (receiver, TV) when starting or shutting down your Apple TV.
Another feature I like: When you have selected the search bar and jump into the line or grid keyboard, grab your iPhone and a notification to open the remote app will appear right on your Lock Screen. Tap to open the app’s search bar and type the search term with the iPhone keyboard.
I did what you said before I watched this video.... but I couldn't get the remote to work. Then, following your advice, I waited several minutes for it to reboot.... and that made all the difference. Now it works.... the firmware did not update since it was already the latest available.
It is..? Works for me at least. I don’t think the format in the settings of the Apple TV matters though.. if whatever you are about to watch has Dolby vision it should automatically change to that right when you play it even if your Apple TV format is set to basic 4K SDR or 4K HDR. Pretty sure that’s what you mean right? I don’t even know if you have a damn Apple TV from that comment now I’m realizing lol 🤦♂️🤷♂️🤣
There is always something I learn from each of your videos. Showed the bit about asking Siri 'what did he say' to mean it skips back 10s and briefly shows subtitles to my other half. Her instant reply was "Game Changer" :)
This video is especially helpful for those who are new to technology and want to gain a better understanding. For individuals with prior experience in video technology, you may find that the content is intuitive and easily navigable, likely requiring less time to comprehend than the video's duration. While I personally had hoped to discover new insights, it appears that the video mainly covers familiar ground.
Great video. When I had Spectrum as my TV provider, I used to be able to say "Watch ABC" and Siri would open the Spectrum app and change to the ABC channel (US). I now use RUclipsTV as my TV provider and can't just say "Watch ABC". When I go to the TV Provider option I can't choose RUclipsTV. Can RUclipsTV be my TV provider? Thanks!

I have an Apple TV 4K first generation one thing that is important to point out, especially for HomeKit users. It is the only newer model 4K with ethernet compatibility that has thread compatibility what is extremely useful when meshing your network it’s also extra useful for using it as a secondary computer terminal as you can remote desk computer via third-party applications. I installed my Apple TV yesterday and I found your video this morning. I found most of what you mentioned, but as my iPhone was already updated to IOS17 and the Apple TV was still on IOS16, I did have a couple of small problems with the installation. However, I was able to complete the installation with the Apple TV talking to my Apple Watch. When installation was complete, I updated to IOS 17. I could then install the Apple TV app on my phone. A surprise for me was, I could install my current VPN on the Apple TV.

I can synchronise them to my iPhone's TV app, but despite I specifically select to synchronise "Playlists" (as opposed to "Videos") they don't appear on the phone app. It only shows the videos, but NOT organised within playlists... I appreciate any constructive inputs, thank you! 🙏

Thanks for the video just wondering if there is a list or TVs the Apple box does not work with would you happen to know as I’m looking to purchase the box.
you could install a media player like VLC and use it to connect to a storage in the network (like a NAS) and play videos from the NAS. Some also use Plex though I havent tried it. One nifty feature is when you get into a text prompt (like typing passwords or search ), a prompt opens on the iphone allowing you to type on the iphone instead ofg the onscreen keyboard.
How did you get to settings. I can’t find one video visually showing what was pressed to get there it just cuts and we’re there. Exactly what buttons were pressed to get to the general settings?

Hi This was a really helpful video and insight to Apple TV. One thing I remain puzzled about is how it enables switching between App services and watching live TV. I thought I’d seen somewhere that Apple TV now incorporates a live TV programme guide - is this right? K
Beta user as well. It’s been solid software…the hardware…the new remote is SO much better…BUT…I purchased a thin silicon case for it which makes it a little “stickier” - less likely to slip out of my hands or in between couch cushions…it also makes it easier to see.
Great content. I will definitely get more use out of mine after watching this. The only issue I have is the streaming apps for live tv. I use an android box simply because it runs the TiviMate app which is excellent. Still looking for one on AppleTV.
I find the AirPlay / iPhone mirroring to be quite useful. You can even do it without a Wi-Fi connection on newer models for areas like schools or areas with incompatible networks.
I agree, and I’ve used that feature for a long time now. I’ve had an iPhone for maybe 15 years in a row now but I just bought the S24 ultra.. kind of got sick of Apple, doing the same crap year after year, and I’ve always loved the look in shape of the galaxy.. the newest one of course. I still have my iPhone and I am on it right now, but the galaxy will be shipping sometime soon. I am very very scared because I won’t be able to do the mirroring anymore with my new phone. On my TV I think there’s a Google mirror type thing, but it probably won’t ever work as good as apples. Your comment made me think of that.. that’s all lol.
This is great and Apple should pay you & include with installation! My question is whether I can record shows and watch same day or week. Our Tech guy says go to the apps but the shows their are not same day, usually a week behind. I have tried to use record function but I’m doing something wrong because my shows do not appear after asking them to be recorded.
I have just upgraded to an Apple TV4K and great it is. One control I cannot find is how to use the Apple controller to turn off both the Apple TV box and the TV at the same time. This did work when using my old small black Apple Controller with my old Apple TV box. Can you help please? I have a Sony TV.

How do you move thw watch list to the top? For some idiotic reason Apple moved it down so I have to scroll down and down just to see whats in my watch list. Thanks for the video and oh ya thanks so much for the info on saying to siri "what did he say" I'm deaf and wear a CI but I am always having to rewind to understand what is said (CI contrary to what the companies say DO NOT make you fully hearing). You just saved me frustration always rewinding and then going to fa then fast forwarding and add nausium.
Most might think that Accessibility holds nothing for them, but the shortcut (three clicks of the menu/back button) can be set for really commonly used functions like zoom, or toggle Closed Captions/subtitles. Not all apps support this method to toggle CCs -- I can't fathom why -- but it's a handy thing to do without click-hold the Siri button and speak out loud.
13:03 I do not have cameras that are compatible with Apple Home. But I do have Phillips Hue lights throughout my home. I have shortcuts on Apple Home to turn on or off lights in specific rooms or zones. Or to set a room to a specific scene. This is nice when I have a glare on my screen, and the lights in the kitchen are no longer needed.
Good review, thanks. So I have a couple of questions. I want to get one of these to update a few years old Sony TV (xf9005) which is very slow and buggy but still has a very nice picture. I watch all the main freeview HD channels live and I use the catch-up players (BBC iplayer, itv X, C4), RUclips, Netflix and Prime video. I don't have an iphone or i-device. Is this still a good purchase for me and can I even get rid of my TV remote which is essentially broken?

Ah - this explains my problems I am having. Well explained, massive thanks for this comment 👍
Love the FaceTime option. We’ve always used screen mirroring to FaceTime with family. This should be much easier.
2 notes:
Unless you have teeny tiny fingers, you will always hunt and peck on a phone screen - NOBODY I'm aware of can touch type on a screen that small...
Mine used to do that but drops the keyboard on me these days.
Thanks for the warning about the photos app.
True, but using Siri to dictate passwords is easier still. As long as you don’t have anyone around listening in that is>
@Alexo-lq5kp Not when it's a random password created using a password manager
If I have two echo dots, can I have sound play through the echo AND Tv speakers at the same time?
Excellent video! I just got my first Apple TV yesterday and this video was very helpful. Thank you for speaking in a normal, and calm manner. Too many channels deliver content in an exaggerated, and fake “excited” manner. New subscriber!
Totally agree. RUclips is a mess, and I appreciate the lack of hyperbole here.
Everyone I talk to at my same age, younger, or older, it doesn’t matter. No one seems to understand how amazing the Apple TV is.
It doesnt do anything useful. Doesnt have external or internal storage and doesnt have audio output.
The more expensive model support thread as well. Thread is a smartphone network protocol connecting your smart home devices and is a very good feature to have if you build an Apple smart home. Also the Apple TV can act as a home hub enabling you to control all HomeKit devices when away from home
Yep. Don't forget Thread networking!
I was very surprised he didn’t mention Thread, it’s definitely a good future proof investment
I think in playback you totally skipped the scrubbing feature. One of my favorites. When you are paused (in supported apps) you can hold your finger on the outer ring of the remote and without lifting your finger rotate around the ring to scrub forward or backward as fast or as slow as you like.
This is truly helpful and an evolution in remote controls.
Ive owned all models from beginning. As photographer and iphone photo educator i hope you will add more about using the Photos App . Thanks, love your work, keep it going!
Very cool video. One thing that I love about the Apple TV that I suggest you to add, is the screen saver with those amazing videos!!
Oh yeah that’d be interesting!
How’s atmos performance of q990c along with Apple TV..I have this and planning to get an Apple TV over NVIDIA shield pro…
It is possible to install Tidal app on it from his appstore? Tks!
Question, can you do screen mirroring from macbook to your apple through airplay with 4K resolution?
@@fakhrulhilal yes
I have one of these and it’s sooooo much better than any other streaming box.
Sadly I have to disagree. The ShieldTV Pro can do many things way better, but usability wise the Apple TV is way way better than the shield. I really wish my Apple TV could do all things my Shield can.
@@paulgreen4553like what and dont tell me plex because apple as an alternative. So like what? I’m curious becuase ive has them all Rokus i had Walmarts brand and fire tv i had them except the shield so what about the shield is better than the Apple TV 4K?
Great info! Thx! Wish Apple TV 4K would allow multi app Picture in Picture.
This video is an absolute must!! Its honestly turned my apple tv into a central hub for my entertainment
I believe you missed the other difference between the two latest TV 4K boxes. The larger capacity has Thread capability to become the centre of your smart home as a leading device, which is also the function of the HomePod mini for example. 🙂
🙂18:10 in the spec details
Curious to know why we shouldn’t always close down our apps? I’ve been doing this probably every night, if not once a week. Thanks in advance!
Why isn’t Disney + Dolby vision content played in dolby vision on Apple TV 4K latest gen?
👌🏻
Awesome feature
Thanks!
How do you know when to charge the remote?
@@johnschubarth2000 a small alert will pop up on your tv screen letting you know the remote is low on battery.
Wow !! I have had several generations of apple tv units…. But had no idea how sophisticated it had become and how integrated with Siri ( which I currently rarely use) As ever your presentation is impeccable and so informative…many thanks!
Very interesting and helpful information. I find using the RUclips App on my AppleTV very fiddly and would appreciate any tips and guidance for that - including any settings that avoid the frame bleeding outside the visible area, which is really frustrating whrn watching software instructionals. Always enjoy your content, even when the subject isn't for something I actually use.
How is it fiddly?
Why does your UI look so different from mine??? I got the latest Apple TV all updated 🤔
Great video been watching your content for a week keep it up.😊
Hi, which third party apps can you use for computer terminal? Thanks.
We just got a appletv 4K second hand …it took us a while to get it connected and get rid of the old users ! But I hopefully see it as a way to get rid of unnecessary costs that we are still paying for cable right now
Thank you for taking the time to share all your knowledge 👏
Love the videos. Seen a few and just love how you aren’t selling the products you’re just saying how it is. Thanks man
I installed my Apple TV yesterday and I found your video this morning.
This was an excellent presentation! I don’t own an Apple TV but I own everything Apple. I was thinking about the Fire TV Cube since I have echo boxes throughout my home. This gives me options. Thank you.
Excellent video - great audio and video quality, clear, complete, concise and VERY helpful. This is a prime example of what a tech channel should be!
Trying to get FaceTime to work but can’t I’m using IOS17 on phone and box which I believe is Gen 2 I bought it in 2021 and I’m using IPHONE 12 pro/max any advice would be appreciated all I’m getting is call failed. Thanks 🙏
Handy little tuition. We use ours a lot for showing shared photos, but the order changes from your original set up on the Mac to date of last modified rather than when taken. Completely ruins the story telling element of showing your holiday photos! But the picture quality is stunning!
Excellent. Perhaps you can assist me. I use AirPods Pro with AppleTV. Is there a more direct way to connect to AirPods rather opening control center>audio>then scroll down and selecting the AirPods? It would be nice to have something that it involves less of a drill down because I connect to them several times a day. Thanks!
Thank you for introducing me to the infinity of uses of my Apple TV 4K. OMGoodness, I have a lot to learn and your video gives this 70-something gives me a bit more courage to use ONLY Apple TV vs. the apps loaded in the LG tv monitor. Cheers plus review how to add new apps like Netflix and Paramount + too.
How is it compared to old version? Picture & sound quality?why it's better over older version?
Hi! Thank you for this walkthrough video! I have one question though: How can I synchronise my "home videos" to my Apple TV and then play them on my TV? I can synchronise them to my iPhone's TV app, but despite I specifically select to synchronise "Playlists" (as opposed to "Videos") they don't appear on the phone app. It only shows the videos, but NOT organised within playlists... I appreciate any constructive inputs, thank you! 🙏
You are definitely the most polite person that I have heard offer helpful instructions on how to use computer products. Just subscribed to your RUclips ‘channel.’ I am new to Apple from the android world.
Thanks for the video just wondering if there is a list or TVs the Apple box does not work with would you happen to know as I’m looking to purchase the box.
Is there a way to auto play your moves in your library?
you could install a media player like VLC and use it to connect to a storage in the network (like a NAS) and play videos from the NAS. Some also use Plex though I havent tried it.
One nifty feature is when you get into a text prompt (like typing passwords or search ), a prompt opens on the iphone allowing you to type on the iphone instead ofg the onscreen keyboard.
Is there a way to control your TV, example change channels etc with Apple TV remote comtroller?
How did you get to settings. I can’t find one video visually showing what was pressed to get there it just cuts and we’re there. Exactly what buttons were pressed to get to the general settings?
if you have an iPad can’t I just do all this stuff by air playing from my iPad to the tv?
Colour balance via phone. That's neat. Thanks!
quick question about the sleep timer, is it permanent once you set it in the control center or is it just that one time while its on and then it wont happen when you next turn it back on?
Hi thanks for doing this great presentation. Do you have an update for apple tv app on smart tv in 2024, the app seems to have changed now and I can't get to see any of my own content although the library is listed, but only shows purchased content none of my home created content, Any idea would be helpful.
Hi This was a really helpful video and insight to Apple TV. One thing I remain puzzled about is how it enables switching between App services and watching live TV. I thought I’d seen somewhere that Apple TV now incorporates a live TV programme guide - is this right? K
It doesn’t have its own. It’s all 3rd party apps with live features
Hi how do you get the next episode of a tv show you own to play the next one automatically many thanks mark great channel
Can AppleTV use the files app to access my iCloud files to show me downloaded or saved videos?
Beta user as well. It’s been solid software…the hardware…the new remote is SO much better…BUT…I purchased a thin silicon case for it which makes it a little “stickier” - less likely to slip out of my hands or in between couch cushions…it also makes it easier to see.
Great content. I will definitely get more use out of mine after watching this. The only issue I have is the streaming apps for live tv. I use an android box simply because it runs the TiviMate app which is excellent. Still looking for one on AppleTV.
Are there any accessories available now that allows me to FaceTime without having to prop my phone up near the TV?
One of the best videos I’ve ever seen on the Apple TV. Tons of information, presented in a very concise, down to earth manner. Awesome!
Facts about the remote being plastic is an error that could have been fact checked and was not. First Rule of journalism. Facts.
Can I save content from my iPhone and iPad onto the Apple 4k box in effect as a backup hard drive? Photos, iTunes, or documents?
Nope
Great vid, thanks. The Control Center looks completely different under iOS 18.2. Do you have an update for this? Thanks and cheers.
I have just upgraded to an Apple TV4K and great it is. One control I cannot find is how to use the Apple controller to turn off both the Apple TV box and the TV at the same time. This did work when using my old small black Apple Controller with my old Apple TV box. Can you help please? I have a Sony TV.

I literally learn subverting be with every one of your videos. Sometimes it’s small, sometimes it’s major, never fails though. Thank you
11:09 Streaming audio to two different Bluetooth headphones is priceless! It’s available in the Audio Output settings. Have both BT headphones already connected and then enable each one.
I love how it pops up with a prompt to use AirPods when I take them out of the case
I really love that I can customize the look, font & color of my subtitles on Apple TV.
Your video on Apple TV was excellent. Thank you. I learnt so much about Apple TV capabilities and I’ve had it for two years already!
Can you explain how to stream from other devices to the Apple TV
I have been using an Apple TV since the original white Intel models. I always found that though more expensive they just work so much better.
Agree!
Is this still a good purchase for me and can I even get rid of my TV remote which is essentially broken?
thanks so much for this. despite having an Apple TV for years I learned a lot of new things about it!
I was wondering if there are apps that provide access to local TV channels with the Apple TV plus subscription.
Your product reviews are spot on and easy to follow simply amazing I rarely leave reviews.
Another great video! Have had AppleTV for ages but was a few items here that I didn't know about.
Do you have a solution for the AppleTV Remote on a Mac ?
