    The lack of ads cannot be overstated. Such a better user experience vs competitors.
    I would say this is the #1 reason I would spend more for this vs other options. It has limited ads out of the box.

      I think I'd rather have the ability to use 3rd party apps which aren't approved by google or apple that are capable of adblocking video content. Having to look at a few adverts on the home screen is a fair trade off for that ability. I suppose if you're only using it to watch content that is ad-free to begin with then you might have a point.

      This is super easy to fix on Android TV/Google TV/Fire OS by simply installing a custom launcher such as Projectivy which will get rid of all that crap they plaster all over your home screen
      The end result is even cleaner than Apple TV
      No, the real problem with Android TV boxes is just how underpowered the vast majority of them are
      Even the new Google Streamer for $100 feels stupid when the Apple TV is far far more powerful at $130

    There is one fatal flaw in Apple TV 4k: the way it handles HD upscaling. It’s 4k upscaling is rudimentary to say politely and is way behind the 4k upscaling that most premium modern TVs can do on their own. This leaves you with two choices: leave Apple TV 4K in 4K resolution, letting it handle upscaling of the HD and SD shows, but with inferior results or, switch Apple TV to HD for HD shows and back to 4K for 4K programming. Unfortunately, Apple TV does not let you just pass the original resolution to the TV: you have to choose. For all it’s sophistication and Content Matching options, it left this one on the floor.

    I just switched from apple TV to Walmarts Onn 4k $50.00 Google TV with 28gb of storage, more ram and network 1gb rj45 port. The biggest reason was when software updates were needed because the server changed. Apple is the slowest one to get the changes implemented. So stuff will shut down for two or three weeks till there’s a patch or update on the program an android usually has it beforehand. Stuff like Plex, RUclips products and some other major content providers. The extra free space allows much larger buffering, which was the biggest advantage to the Apple TV. I now have less buffering on the android stick than the Apple TV and I did compare this to Google TV and stick and found this to outperform Google‘s product also. It still does not have approval to support companies like Spectrum and other cable companies but most people doing this could care less about that.

    I had only the newer shield model for years and have noticed that its been getting sluggish (as all android devices do). I then got the apple tv 4k in another room and have loved it so far. I ended up selling the shield and replaced it with another apple tv and haven’t looked back. The integrations into the iphone and apple watch are awesome. Using airpods with it is also super useful. I have a Roku (best model they have) and an nVidia Shield TV Pro or whatever (the best model they have). I generally like the Roku MUCH more. I only have the Shield because it can play the wacky file types that the Roku cannot when I attach a hard drive. But man I'm having a hard time finding a good video player for the Shield. The one I tried recently forced subtitles on me and I could not turn them off. Even when I told the Shield not to display them in the global preferences, that app still did. There's almost too many video apps to choose from and most are very over-designed. From a UX standpoint Apple TV looks to be the best but it really needs more USB ports if I wanna attach a hard drive. Also Apple TV (service) has nothing I care to watch.

    I use the Apple TV primarily because it has an excellent screen reader built into it. For those who are blind or low vision. The downside, the match frame rate option causes a lot of delay when it switches from formats, this occurs often while watching RUclips and cycling through commercials. I attempted to use it, but had to turn it off because of the annoyance of the constant pause while it recalibrated. Of course the video does not matter to me since I cannot see yet, but I wanted to enhance the image for those in my family who could see. forgive dictation errors. 0:03 0:03

      There is no overheating with the apple TV. Thing is the latest apple TV has a fanless design and a metal body. Hence when it get warm, thats by design as that is the way how it dissipates heat.

    I love my Apple TV 4K! I haven’t been able to use anything else since getting one! It’s the ONLY TV/streaming box that has a nothing-but-what-I-add interface (*NO ADS!!!*) and settings. Also it has apps no other does (like RadarScope). I enjoyed my Nvidia Shield TV 4K, but I just kept thinking, my Apple TV did this better… BUT I do miss the USB ports on the shield tv. Many reasons to pick up an Apple TV over anything else, and worth every penny. I would however recommend the Nvidia Shield TV 4K if someone has an Android phone as the Apple TV can be a pain without an IOS device (like typing/searching for example).

    @ryanw8664 2 месяца назад

    I need to correct you here, Lon. The Shield is not the only game in town, nor is it the best way to play "all the modes" of video "the same way" one could as with a disc player. Specifically, it cannot play the FEL layer of Dolby Vision Profile 7. One of the few devices that can is the Ugoos AM6B+ running CoreELEC. If you don't care about that and just need something to stream from Plex, a newer box from Zidoo or the like would be much better choice than something as old as the Shield at this point.

This is not true and misleading. He is the supposed expert yet he has an incomplete understanding of the topic, his advice is outdated, and all it would take is a quick search of Reddit to learn. If his target audience here is enthusiasts, as he proclaims, they will by definition care about such details and deserve better.
