Very useful review. The main use I have for an "streaming" box is to play ripped full-bandwidth 4k UHD Dolby Vision movies via Plex. For me, only the Nvidia Shield Pro (2019) can do this. Maybe one of the Apple TV streaming boxes can do it as well. The 4K Dolby Vision of the "Back to the Future" trilogy bandwidth can exceed 100mbps. My TCL TV Roku app can't play this. Something I've found with 8bitdo controllers, you have to periodically check for firmware updates. And there is a dedicated dongle if you have a USB hub, or otherwise have a difficult connection. It requires charging, and updating as well.
The previous model Android TV streamer had the option to provide Ethernet via the USB cable that also powers it. If I were to swap out with this new device would it use ethernet over the USB cable? I don't want to run another cable through my wall up to the TV.
Is there any word of a refresh to the Nvidia Shield TV by Nvidia? The software and Bluetooth on it have gotten more glitchy over the years on my 2019 especially with the triangular shaped remote and the plex client. My Plex client often crashes when scrubbing back on the video timeline despite reinstalling it multiple times. I don't use the Plex server. My back end is a Synology running Plex Pass. The remote loses connectivity and I have to delete the data and cache on the Bluetooth app to get it working again using my tv original remote via CEC.
The choice is between this and Apple 4K! I personally do not own any Apple products so everything at home is Google but I have heard that Apple is better so the question is if you dare to buy Apple 4K or should I take Google if you only want to use these streaming services?
My preference is the Apple TV 4k. It handles 24p switching better than any other device on the market. I use it for all of my streaming service watching.
Biggest issue is lack of codecs. If it can't do stuff like Dolby TrueHD, then what's the point? An Apple TV is a much superior product compared to this - and with a lot less ads, and Apple supports their stuff forever.
The fact that no one, not even Nvidia, has created a device with Android TV that can replace the Shield makes it clear how the market for these things is not very large
What I miss on the remote is a source button. Unless you want to use the flexible button for that. I want to use it for home panel. I originally had some problem setting that up till i found that there were some updates I still had to do.
Why would they make a bigger device and discontinue the smaller more compact perfectly capable option? Googles strategy seems more about making new skus to sell than actually improving hardware.
I love the filmmaker mode on my LG C2, but hate the TV dashboard and lack of apps I want. I contacted Google Support and asked if the 2024 Streamer has filmmaker mode. The rep said yes. Roku 2024's Streamer does not mention filmmaker mode in their literature.
Despite the price ($159 AUD) the Google TV Streamer 4K is a good replacement for the Chromecast 4K which is very slow to respond and locks up from time to time. The extra storage 32 GB v's 4 GB means you now have a bit of room to install a wider range of apps. 4 GB storage is just too small. You end up having to delete apps so you can try new ones: With each version of Android the space left for apps shrinks further. Other improvements: Android v14 (v's V12) Gigabit ethernet The Google Streamer is not expensive enough to agonise over the price. The future: The Google streamer will probably get a price drop down to $99 AUD in the near future. The Google Streamer will probably also get a performance enhancement (faster CPU?)... but that could be further down the track. We've been putting up with poor performance for years (voice recognition doesn't work properly)... so we didn't want to wait for a price drop. 🙂
The Chromecast has a small hole for at the top of the remote close to your hand) for the microphone. This may explain the poor voice recognition i.e. More prone to stuff dropping in. The new Google TV Streamer has a slighly larger rectangular hole in the bottom of the remote (at the far end). Maybe this is why the voice recognition works better on the Google Streamer? i.e. Stuff can't drop in unless you turn the remote over. 🙂
To be honest I bought this for our Living Room but I'm not too big on the fact that they are using a Two Year Old Processor from the Amazon Firestick 4K. I just bought it earlier today and I'm pissed that lossless audio(TrueHD/DTS-HD) isn't supported. My old shield can do this just fine, so why did google cheap out?
All these companies cheap out in some way when it comes to these devices. Nvidia went all in back in 2015 but haven't released a new model since 2019. Appears they have no interest in doing so.
I don't agree with the price but the streamer does work smoothly as I turn my Smart TV into a dumb TV since it's built in Google TV is a joke. So far Atmos has been working flawlessly.

The Apple TV is FAR superior for the price you’re paying for this thing, better software, better UI, BETTER REMOTE, and way better hardware quality and they won’t be discontinuing the device and acting like it dosnt exist for 5 years like they did with chromecast. You can airplay from PC and your android phone and NO you don’t need any other Apple devices to get a good experience with it and NO you don’t need any other Apple iPhone to set them up AND if you want to you can stream those bluray and 4k rips with the right software from your pc or Mac.
Watching the review I just ended up questioning myself why I was looking at Android TV boxes considering how limited they are and how much stuff I do not like that there's loads of like Ads and the multitude of features that are useless to me like AI and the Matter thing, Google Home, etc. And for the performance for that $99 price it just feels like a ripoff. I'll just stick to hooking up a PC to my TV. Though I may need to upgrade since my PC only has HDMI 1.4 and can do 4k30 at best which feels weirdly sluggish since its not 60fps, unless DP 1.2 to HDMI 2.0 works properly would give me 4k60.
UK users beware, it does not support BBC iPlayer or All4 apps (at the time of writing this anyway). This makes it effectively useless for the majority of UK users. Typical Google.

I recommend projectivity launcher for it to remove all the ads and make it way more customizable. It replaces your home screen. Lon did a video on it.
How about their strategy is to make more money by screwing the consumers?
A friend of mine bought one of these and is able to select Dolby TrueHD for audio output. Is that not lossless?
@@carlkitchen it is
No "Live" menu item on my Google TV Streamer.
The "Live" option seems to be unavailable in Australia.
:-)
I love the filmmaker mode on my LG C2, but hate the TV dashboard and lack of apps I want. I contacted Google Support and asked if the 2024 Streamer has filmmaker mode. The rep said yes. Roku 2024's Streamer does not mention filmmaker mode in their literature.
is there a guest account
Did you test the thread border router functionality?
My only matter device didn't work with it.
@@LonSeidman That's the arre (née TUO) smart button I presume? Those have been finicky for me.
@@solomonhilliard5357 Yeah can't seem to get it to work properly
Despite the price ($159 AUD) the Google TV Streamer 4K is a good replacement for the Chromecast 4K which is very slow to respond and locks up from time to time.
The extra storage 32 GB v's 4 GB means you now have a bit of room to install a wider range of apps.
4 GB storage is just too small. You end up having to delete apps so you can try new ones:
With each version of Android the space left for apps shrinks further.
Other improvements:
Android v14 (v's V12)
Gigabit ethernet
The Google Streamer is not expensive enough to agonise over the price.
The future:
The Google streamer will probably get a price drop down to $99 AUD in the near future.
🙂
google for sure released this JUST for their black friday bundles
To be honest I bought this for our Living Room but I'm not too big on the fact that they are using a Two Year Old Processor from the Amazon Firestick 4K. Google really needs to get it together and use more Premium internals in their stuff especially at this Price point. I plan on keeping my Onn 4K Pro Streaming Box for the Upstairs TV and I'll also just keep the Chromecast With Google TV 4K in our Dining Room I don't think it's worth Upgrading all of our TV's to this not at this Price point.
What is 24p frame rate and why does it matter?
Lon.tv/24p
Lon - a USB hub (with power passthrough) won't help with that controller lag. Remote gaming generally sucks over cable Internet.
If I'm going to be paying over $100 for that little bitty streamer box it better do all that movie theater stuff.lol
I don't agree with the price but the streamer does work smoothly as I turn my Smart TV into a dumb TV since it's built in Google TV is a joke. So far Atmos has been working flawlessly.
I wish Nvidia would do a Shield refresh. It really shouldn't be all that difficult for some other Android equivalent to come in and match an outdated device like the Shield. If anyone could've done it, Google could have.
At that price they should at least include an HDMI cable.
that would cost Google small potatoes while they rake dollars w data collection & customized ads.
There is dolby TrueHD & DTS MA just check the settings not sure why my comment was removed showing this?
Your comment wasn't removed. Those settings are in the control panel but the device does not pass them through.
@@LonSeidman I’ll love to see a video on this like the one where you compared the nvidia shield to the Apple TV 4K and your Avr showing pass through vs MultiPCM on your avr thanks
Are you sure about wifi 6?
Oops looks like it's not Wifi 6 I'll post an errata.
I see Google still has not fixed the missing movie art in the purchased library
What exactly do you mean by 24p ?
"24p" refers video format that operates at 24 frames per second

Not impressed with Google TV. Just bought an expensive Sony TV with Google TV built-in and thought I wouldn't need to keep my 5 year old Roku hooked up to it anymore. However, many apps on the Play store say not compatible with my device, so I still have to use the old Roku for 1 or 2 apps I rely on.
Please do. Gaming test
Does anyone have an issue with their Onn 4K, that when it turns on its just snow?? I have to turn it off and back on again to get it to work.
There are some RUclips channels that are un 24 frames a second. I found frame rates of 24, 25, 30, 50 and 60.
I thought about Google TV, but haven't had a good reason to use one.
I have heard it is wifi 5.

CAN YOU INSTALL A VPN ON IT?
Rather use a pc with remote control than using any streaming box
Shield is the only worthy streaming device
Ok so it has Google Home, BUT can it control locally, if the Internet goes down??? Max hub can not!!!
Only Apple's HomeKit (and something like home assistant) works offline
Uggghh. I'm trying to excise Google from everything I use so this isn't very appealing to me.
When you start a review by saying it’s not bad Ha, Ha, HA… the new ONN is half the price.
in typical google fashion they discontinued the Chromecast for this piece of crap
UK users beware, it does not support BBC iPlayer or All4 apps (at the time of writing this anyway). This makes it effectively useless for the majority of UK users. Typical Google.
There should be an Nvidia shield Lite to eat the competition and establish the minimum quality we deserve
Nvidia please come out with a refresh 🙏
FREAKING lovin it ..pre-ordered month ago few of them in Hazel color 2 of them arrived & one gonna by Monday for my 4k/Projector...is very slick & powerful , GREAT upgrade from my almost 4 years old Chromecast TV dongles i had🥰🔥👍👌
if u see little things here & there, this & that , is NEW device Google is very GOOD updating thire devices down the road every few weeks , not worry about that at all , but The Streamer is super🔥 F** that rip off APPLE brand, if u wanna pay that much get NVIDIA Shield much better Quality
Wifi 5 not 6. Big difference.
