I agree! Fells butter smooth so far. Time will tell once I get more apps and stuff in here. I think the large amount of storage helps too, not constrained by 8gb like prev models.

The "star" button besides the "Input Switch" button that you called an "exit button", is the fastest way to get to Google Home. it is a programmable button, but ideally Google wants you to use it as the shortcut tog et to your Google Home.
Great video. I'm planning to get this because i can't stand my Samsung S90C's built-in software and its remote doesn't even have an input switch button 😞
Yes! That's my biggest frustration with Samsung. I have a smart monitor that also doesn't have an input switch button on the remote. It's maddening!! This is def a good option! Thx for watching
Loved this in depth review! One thing I'm wondering is how stable is this device? I've not used Google but I've seen other cheaper streaming devices freeze or hang about once a week requiring a restart.
Zero issues so far. In my experience the Google branded devices are pretty darn stable. The software is basically designed for these. They're essentially reference designs.
No idea how I haven't found your channel as someone who lives in CO, and is an avid tech junky, but your videos are solid! I'm looking forward to updating my CCWGTV on Thurs. Both of my 2 units are extremely slow and buggy.
CO geeks gotta stick together!! 🤓 This is a good upgrade. Also can recommend the Onn. 4k pro if you wanna spend less. Solid box at Walmart of all places. Thx for the follow! Cya on 📺
I almost pulled the trigger on the ONN, but I always tend to just choose the Google variant of everything. Pixel 9 pro fold, Pixel watch, Pixel buds, Pixel tablet, and now the streamer lol.
Fun to find your channel and follow along with your set-up process/first tests with the device! Been on the fence about replacing the FireOS built in on my TV, and it's been interesting seeing the discourse and comparisons to the 2017(?) NVIDIA Shield Pro box as still the gold standard (although lacking with its security updates at this point). Just got a Pixel coming from a long time iPhone user, so the Google Home integration is becoming more alluring as I ease into this ecosystem. Probably going to be a little longer of mulling on it and watching videos like yours! As a video suggestion for this type of medium between two devices, you could screen record your phone during the process and just shoot up a little overlay of it when you wanted to show something that was going on from the phone screen rather than from your facecam (although the focus and delivery was just fine here)! Again, thanks for sharing the experience for us here-excited to see you start popping up in my feed more!
I will say this. Its not a power user device. So if you need full control or are a gamer, Shield is still king. But if you are a google user, then this will be perfectly fine as your new set top box. Its streams well (especially if you are hard plugged in). It kind of just works. But isnt that what we want. It seems to be a step down from the latest apple tv as well. But that is more expensive. Also the google home integration is slick. I wonder long term how it holds up but the one i saw running and played with is plenty enough. Its kind of like when every was comparing fire sticks to shields 5 years ago. Again this device is not set up to replace a shield class device. it is an upgrade from chromecast OR people on fire sticks/roku sticks. Its segmented in between
Agree 100%. I wish Google would make a box to go head to head with the Nvidia. Maybe even use the Tegra processor too? It could be $200 I'd buy it. I get that $100 hits the mainstream audience but how about a few options?? 🤔
@TELEVISIONARCHIVES wow. I have a shelf and have not had that experience at all. Might want to do a factory reset. Sounds like something might be slowing it down.
@@TechItBeforeYouWreckItLikewise. My shield does something weird every once and awhile but it's pretty solid. Thank you for the nice walk though! Two Question for you sir: Ehere can I find a SAFE source for APK Apps to sideload and can I pair a Bluetooth Keyboard mouse combo to this via Bluetooth or use my phone's keyboard for input in some way?
👋🏻 thanks for watching the video!! Apkmirror and apkpure are super popular apk websites. With that said, always just be cautious with sideloading any app. You can use your android phone keyboard with Google TV very easily. It's built into the drop down menu on Android as long as it's on the same network. Also, yes, Bluetooth keyboards work great! I love having one of these nearby amzn.to/4gF9JYf

Would've liked to see a comparison between using Wi-Fi and the included network port. If you're on the network port and you have a NAS, will it let you sideload Plex and view films/videos you have on your NAS/network? i.e. Can you add network storage or only use the local storage? Nvidia Shield and other devices will let you use a NAS, Google might not want to anger content producers so might not include that.
Well - you can def use the PLEX app if you have a NAS with Plex server running. Not sure if you can directly connect NAS storage to the device as a virtual drive. Doubt it.

The Onn 4k pro is an awesome box. I have a couple vids on my channel about it, check them out. I think the 4k pro has more options for power users. Most importantly the usb storage port. You're going to get a more guaranteed "Google" experience with the steamer and I do like the smart home hub. But besides those pluses it's hard to beat the 4k pro at half the price!! That help?
Just curious whether the new Streamer allows for the adding of a VPN App, be it Express, Vanish, Shark, Nord, etc. No one in their reviews seems to mention this. Any info is much appreciated.
Hello, much appreciated for answering my question. I have 4 Google Chromecast devices and would only buy the new one if they can take a VPN to be used for privacy. If you test one, please advise. I use Nord and ExpressVPN. Thanks again for the answer. Will also subscribe to your page, just discovered it today.
@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt yes, it just times out using the home app streamer setup. It eventually gives a message stating the routers that have guest networks (AP isolation) are not allowed by the home app. Even using the non guest ssid it still fails with the same error.

It's not showing on your TV? 🤔 Def never had a problem. Are you using power from the wall plug that came with it? Try a factory reset by holding down the button on the box. That's all I could suggest, otherwise it could be a bad box.
It was an input button, to change your TV inputs. Now they gave you an option to make it an app button, Google Home or keep it as an input button. Nice change.
So does it do local control of smart home?!!? If it can not control home with no internet, there is no reason to buy it... Why no reviewer will answer the question?!?
I think most people who have smart home setups are not using thread or matter yet. So nobody is really testing it yet. I'm personally using a hubitat local hub with zwave and zigbee devices. It all connected seamlessly because I was already setup on my Google home account. I'm guessing most of this functionality wouldn't work without the internet since Google home is very much cloud based.

Yes, the Play store is where you install your apps. I'm using it in the USA, might be different in other countries.
How’s this compared to the Onn 4K Pro?
The Onn 4k pro is an awesome box. I have a couple vids on my channel about it, check them out. I think the 4k pro has more options for power users. Most importantly the usb storage port. You're going to get a more guaranteed "Google" experience with the steamer and I do like the smart home hub. But besides those pluses it's hard to beat the 4k pro at half the price!! That help?
You rock!
Just curious whether the new Streamer allows for the adding of a VPN App, be it Express, Vanish, Shark, Nord, etc. No one in their reviews seems to mention this. Any info is much appreciated.
I can test that... Can't see them being blocked. They are in the Google play store and should work just fine.
Just to confirm, I installed fastest VPN from the app store and connected with my account with no problem. It def supports VPN
Does the Nest app work so you can wiew a nestcam
As in OG nest app?
Home app install not working. I can manually setup streamer, but home app fails and doesn't recognize the streamer with a manual install
Weird. Mine recognized it instantly. Did you use the QR code?
@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt yes, it just times out using the home app streamer setup. It eventually gives a message stating the routers that have guest networks (AP isolation) are not allowed by the home app. Even using the non guest ssid it still fails with the same error.
Has anyone figured out how to get to art mode on a frame TV using the streamer remote?
Think you might need the Samsung remote for that
Can you side load apps
Yes. 100% can sideload apps once you enable developer mode. (Which takes 10 seconds)
if I purchase the Google TV Streamer (4K) from the US, will it work in India? Because this device is not avilable official in india.
It won't receive software and security updates unless you set it up in the US and then take it to India.
Good question, I'm not really sure as I am in the US. That would likely be a restriction by Google on the software side.
Just got my device today - one problem I've found is that the Smarttube app installs on it but will not sign-in. Anyone have a fix for this? Thanks in advance
My Home Panel does not work :(
That's a bummer. Does it show up at all?
can we use VPN APPS ?....
That's way too many steps to get the thing started. But great video from start to finish.
It did seem like a lot of steps!!! 😢 Seems like there devices startup process gets longer with each new update.
I can't get HDMI on my Google tv for chrome cast 4k I have 1 HDMI
It's not showing on your TV? 🤔 Def never had a problem. Are you using power from the wall plug that came with it? Try a factory reset by holding down the button on the box. That's all I could suggest, otherwise it could be a bad box.
@@TechItBeforeYouWreckIt I have a google tv
I don't quite understand. 😕
exit button?
Back button just like the last iteration.
I think it may have been a source button? For your TV? I never used it, so I kind of have no idea.
It was an input button, to change your TV inputs. Now they gave you an option to make it an app button, Google Home or keep it as an input button. Nice change.
@bdoddles6912 yeah, I sort of figured that out after I shot the video. 🙂 Obviously I never used it. I think it was a welcome change as well
So does it do local control of smart home?!!?
If it can not control home with no internet, there is no reason to buy it...
Why no reviewer will answer the question?!?
I think most people who have smart home setups are not using thread or matter yet. So nobody is really testing it yet. I'm personally using a hubitat local hub with zwave and zigbee devices. It all connected seamlessly because I was already setup on my Google home account. I'm guessing most of this functionality wouldn't work without the internet since Google home is very much cloud based.
I want number keys on my remote.
Old school! I think those days are disappearing
We still got no apple airplay. Thx google 😂
No airplay? As in "apple airplay"? Very confused
Android TV Will Block Sideloading With This New Feature think you sould look at this before you buy
Sideloading worked fine for me. What makes you say that they're going to block it?
no black color for google streamer ? TBH I hate white gadget 😕
Yeah, I hear yeah. That clean white tech look isn't for everyone. But the porcelain is pretty slick and closer to black.
If it’s a “deep dive” the words “I’m not really sure how that would work”, shouldn’t be in this review!
Deep dive doesn't always mean I know everything. 😲 I try but I'll be the first to admit if I don't know something. Just exploring this cool world of tech like everyone else! Hope you'll hang with the channel.
A deep dive isn't a review ...it's a first look deeper into the UI, Setup, Etc ...the things that the consumer will go through while setting up. This certainly is a Deep Dive
@@CapturedByKen Then wouldn’t it be called “a first look”?
Why would you not have a TV in your demo 😂
Not sure what you mean? I did a direct capture out of the steamer so it would look better in RUclips
Not a very deep dive
They have a reputation for terrible naming.
It's a little long. 😲

It's like this guy has never used a CCwGTV....
Hmmm - except for the part where I hold up the remote from the CCwGTV? ;)
@techitbeforeyouwreckit can you try to open a heavy 2160p HDR file with high bitrate and HD multichannel Audio to see of it's played without stuttering? Thank you!!
Sure. Got a link to a test file?
