The original ChromeCast was 29 euros and an absolute no-brainer The second added a remote, and the ability to run native apps. At 49 euros for the HD version, it was less of an instant-buy, but still a fun gadget for the money. And now its 2024.. And the discontinued the stick-Chromecast and launched a setup box at 119 euros. Like.. who was asking for this..?
The thing is, which I think some tech RUclipsr pointed out, every new TV has some kind of smart TV integrated into it. So there's no need in buying a 30$ accessorie that does the same thing as your TV. Not faster but slower. So there's target the audience that want the fastest smart TV experience. And that does cost more than a small TV stick. So it kinda makes sense
That's what I call money wisdom! The initial product is just market testing material. Once they hit the jackpot, then they finally decide to make it fancy. Just my two cents from my wild brain! 😄
@@sirvanzwouldn’t all the various Chromecasts from the past decade count as the testing phase? This was anticipated to be a much more substantial machine

Like the iPhone 14 used the 13s processor? And the following year for 15s? Seems they cut that shit out for this year's releases over at Apple. They must have had a lot of leftovers, but recycling is smart I suppose if you can't rework it to make it a newer chip. All I know is SOC technology is not my forte. I just know what's released. Now I'm going to finish this video and see old hardware you speak of.
I have 3 of the Chromecast HD, one for each of my TVs in the home. I have had them basically since day 1, I have been a big fan of the Chromecast and have had every variation. Honestly I do not mind the $99 price tag for an upgrade. I can tell you after owning one for about two weeks, its much faster than the old Chromecast devices. Nothing has changed with my wifi or internet setup and the moment I hooked up the new Google TV Streamer it instantly was much faster. All of the apps open almost instantly, streaming is much faster. When I would watch HBO Max everything I watched would stream in low quality until it buffered enough. Not anymore it just plays full 4K right when I start the stream. I have no complaints, literally nothing to complain about. Can you get better? sure... people still are into the Nvidia shield thing, but its like $250 and never goes on sale, and its like 6 years old now?
@@Shivam-sk5qi when they do those sales, they're usually everywhere, like Google Store, Amazon, Best Buy, etc. but you have to wait until Black Friday gets closem
My dongle needs frequent reboots (I suspect the problem is the hub that I use to get an Ethernet connection to the puck). I'm hoping the new Streamer will fix that.
I have paired the remote from the Chromecast to my streamer, because there is no affordable case available for it yet, ans I like the side volume buttons too 😅
For me, the Google Streamer is less practical than the Chromecast with Google TV. The advantage of the Chromecast with Google TV is that you can easily plug it to a TV and carry it with you anywhere. When you travel, for example, you can take it along with all your pre-configured apps, even your own launcher. And when you're on the go, you can plug it into a hotel TV, at a friend's place, or anywhere else. Plus, if you set it up with a VPN and local TV apps, you can access your home country's TV from anywhere in the world. By the way it is possible to connect a USB-C HUB to the Chromecast with Google TV, I do it, I even add a flashdrive for more memory and 2 Wi-Fi dongles for snes controllers and turn it into a full emulator console. For me in terms of versatility, I find the design of the Google Streamer less appealing compared to the dongle or concept design Google used before.
Same here that's why I won't be upgrading to the new streamer it's so much bigger and not practical for traving like wtf I wanted just a upgraded version of the dougle google chromecast. I love the size of the chromecast I take it everywhere with me
The one I'm using is the HUBEE PLUS: 100W USB-C Mobile Station by Urban Factory, a professional multi-stream transport hub. It was provided by my company with a laptop they gave me. However, you might find a more affordable alternative on Chinese websites.
My Chromecast 4k wifi seemed to be going out a few weeks ago, randomly disconnecting about once a day. I was just going to get an ethernet adapter for it, but the Streamer seemed worth it. Annoying that they don't include an HDMI 2.1 cable though, especially at $99.
Great review The Google TV Streamer is not worth "the upgrade". WTH is Google thinking with this weak HW and high price I'll be keeping my Chromecast HD 4K and perhaps later upgrade to an apple tv or something better
For those expecting deinterlacing of OTA interlaced streams from HDHomeRun etc, you will need to stick with Chromecast HD/4K. In summary Chromecast HD/4K has support for interlaced video, Google TV Streamer does not.
WiFi 5? I still don't see why I should upgrade from my 4k Chromecast for £100. Same set up as a fire stick from 2021... It's 2024, should at least have WiFi 6E and much more for that price
think its a cool concept but its a bit lacking: it doesnt have auracast which is the main thing i would want from a upgrade, it doesn't support tap to cast which would make sense given the new design, otherwise i think its good but idk if its enough to upgrade to
Does the remote works with infrared or radio waves? I was thinking of hiding it somewhere, but if it needs to "see" the remote , it will be impossible to hide it
I share a summer house with another family. Can we have two different profiles and each profile have their own (different) streaming services accounts? For example, my family our own Netflix account under our profile and the other family their own Netflix account under their profile? That way we won’t have to login and log out of every service anytime one of the two families uses it.
For $99 I’d just invest in another Apple TV 4K and stick with my original chromecast. There are a couple things I do like about the chromecast although I rarely use it

In the last iteration of Google devices and phones, Google gets to the level of Apples. Just in price but nowhere near in performance and specs. I skip this generation. No pixel 9, no buds pro 2, no steamer. Common, you were always old and slow but cheaper. Now old versions of things and as expensive or even more expensive? That's not a pricing model that works. As you mentioned: there is cheaper and better.
I'm not sure if I've seen anyone yet compare this to the Walmart ONN Chromecast streamer. I know that particular device is mainly available in the US but as an alternative to the first party Google Streamer, it looks to be one of the best available and costs almost half what the Streamer costs.
The only upgrade here is the remote. If I can buy that and use it with my last gen 4K Chromecast, I'd be happy. Otherwise, this is a downgrade. I don't want more junk on my tv stand.
I have a tcl tv with google os software. It’s definitely better than the streamer. Bought the streamer because of the home integration but now all devices are getting that feature. So I’m returning it not worth $100 bucks.
I've no idea why I would replace my Chromecast with this when I could spend £99 on just about anything else. It's like a nothing upgrade. My Chromecast is for RUclips and Netflix primarily. I don't see any new features that would draw my attention.
The streamer is more problematic than the previous iterations. Had it for two days trying out 3 different HDMI cables (as this version doesn't come with any) and cannot get any sound out of it just the picture. The soundbar doesn't want to know it at all. Disappointing for such an expensive supposed upgrade. At the price they're expecting ($160 in Australia) you'd think they could have included a compatible HDMI cable. The controller isn't as silky as earlier versions either..not impressed at all so far. Also doesn't play all my apps like my previous chromecast HD version such as Kayo Sports (device not compatible with current app message etc.). Back to old version for the time being where the only problem was a bit of wifi dropout but otherwise it was great.
