There are third parties launchers you can use on Google TV to get around the ads on the home screen. Won't help you within the app itself, but this is the same on both platforms.

Can’t imagine living without my Apple TV! I have one for every tv in the house. Also, just wanted to note that you can setup a photo album to play as a screensaver!
I'm completely in the Google ecosystem with a Pixel phone, Pixel Buds, Pixel Watch, Nest Hub, Nest thermostat, Nest doorbell, and Google Home speakers, but I do have an Apple TV 4K and can't seem to find a truly compelling reason for me to switch over to the Google TV Streamer. Google Home integration is nice, but no TV UI is as responsive and uncluttered as Apple TV's. I used a Roku for years and find it laggy AF. My parents used Amazon Fire Sticks for a while, and they were even worse than Roku. I still have an Nvidia Shield to my bedroom TV, and while it's far better than Roku and Amazon Fire, it doesn't come close to the Apple TV.
$30 for an ads free streaming for a device lifetime is a deal. I'm talkin to you, Pichai, Sir. Raise the price. Don't stuff ads on people's faces. Don't be that guy.
They won't. At least not for that price. Because one time payment is worth way less than consistent stream of cashflow. At max they can do it as a subscription, like how they have done with youtube premium with a recurring payment for no ads.
No word about frame rate matching? For me that's actually the most important factor. I don't know about Apple but in Google TV only Netflix can change the refresh rate to 24 Hz to play movies properly. But for all other apps like Disney+ you have to change it manually in settings which is annoying. RUclips often has 30 fps or 60 fps content, so it's not a problem, but for movies with 24 fps, 60 Hz is no no for me. That's something that was never an issue for Blu-ray, where it always had this ability to stream in 24 Hz.
For the most part it’s app dependent but overall frame rate matching works throughout many apps on Apple TV which includes Disney+, RUclips however did but Google disabled that functionality after their implementation caused issues with the HDMI handshake every time adverts came on so rather than fix it they just disable it instead. Most live content will also not match frame rate but pretty much the majority of other on demand content will.
It’s not equivalent to the Apple TV experience though. Google Assistant and search are disabled. You don’t have a universal watch list, and you can’t access purchased titles from Google Play. I think it’s designed more for those who are having guests over vs trying to compete with what Apple does. - Josh

I have the google streamer- had a 10% off discount so got it for $90. It does have an app grid view too, but it does still do the banner ads at the top😅. I like it a lot because of the ease of Chromecast. Also can start all of my other google home devices. Since I mostly watch RUclips, it is great
Weird, you didn't mention the ability to use your iPhone as the remote. Seems like a pretty big plus. Using the iphone's keyboard to fill in a search field? Awesome! Only been using it a few months, but am satisfied with my purchase.
Both devices do that, but the advantage for Google TV is you can use your iPhone or Android as a remote, but Apple like usual don't allow anything outside their ecosystem.

I’ve used both for years, and while both are great, I find Apple TV to be better overall. That said, the choice really depends on your ecosystem. If you’re fully integrated with Apple devices, Apple TV makes more sense. On the other hand, for Android users, Google TV might be a better fit. Both serve as excellent smart home hubs. Personally, I use my Apple TV to manage my Philips smart home setup since it seamlessly connects with the Home app and functions as a hub.
You'll need an HDMI cable that has enough bandwidth to support 4K at 60fps and Dolby Vision. The one I found on Amazon should do that and is reasonably priced (there are a lot of extremely over-priced HDMI cables out there). The thing that'll typically be the giveaway for whether or not the cable can handle the full output these devices are capable of is the Gbps speed and what HDMI version it is (like 2.1 for example). Using a pair of 1st gen Apple TV 4K boxes here, toying with updating to the most recent ATV 4K boxes, just for the speed (rendering the images in my 150+ iTunes film library takes a while) and for the newer remote. The old ‘black slip’ remotes never stop being a pain to find and use the right way round first time.
With the Apple TV my main issue is using the HomePod or HomePod mini as speakers instead of the tv speakers works wonderful but @ least on Apple TV plus content it always ends up being off sync which is frustrating
I share a summer house with another family. Can we have two different profiles and each profile have their own (different) streaming services accounts? For example, my family our own Netflix account under our profile and the other family their own Netflix account under their profile? That way we won’t have to login and log out of every service anytime one of the two families uses it.
Apple TV just works well. from notifying me who is outside my house, giving my access to apple homekit to allowing to use any of my idevice as a remote seamlessly
I still have my Apple TV 4K 1st gen (2017) and would like to upgrade to get eARC support, but I’m gonna wait until there is 4K 120hz support. The of eARC means I often have to play the soundbar on/off dance before it connects correctly which is annoying, but it just means I need to keep my soundbar remote around.
4k120hz tbh would be useless on an apple TV. In fact the current apple TV doesn't support anything over 60hz (eg 1080p 120hz). However 8k60Hz will come eventually.
Google TV has Apps only mode which is similar to Apple TVs homepage, You can also connect multiple Pixel buds to Google TVs similar to how Apple TV can connect to multiple Airpods.

Apple is great for the people who hate playing with their devices. They just want something fast and easy and they are willing to pay for it. Android gives you options and tools to play but you need to read and learn. For certain people I can see why they like apple but I like to break my devices and see how they work.
Sometimes it can be tricky if it’s buried in something. It has that warm cold type detection. You can get pretty close but it doesn’t quite work as good as the iPhone to AirTag or apple watch feature on the newer watches.

Issue with the shield though is that it is long due for an upgrade, and the fact that it is still being sold at the same price. Although for an android streaming box, I'd still hold on to my old shield than upgrade to a new one.
I returned the Apple TV 4K as the RUclips app sucked on it. I know that's Googles fault but still. Ended up getting Google TV that works great with Googles services.
Going forward/backward in a video on RUclips is a joke. You press right button and you expect to go 10 seconds forward, instead only the cursor moves on the seek bar, then you need to press the middle button to confirm. Now the middle button is a touch sensor with swipe, trying to click it you move randomly to another position…

I disagree with the GUI advantage you claim Apple has. The bottom line is an Apple fanboy will not be buying Google Streaming TV and an Android fanboy will not be buying Apple TV... so it "deep" ecosystem is a mute point.
Idk about you guys, but I would hate to have my pictures displayed as screensavers in my TV, that’s hugely narcissistic, and besides that, you guys never receive nudes or take one yourselves? So many things can go wrong with that feature…
Issue with those though is that its not really secure. If your network isn't that protected, it is most definitely sending a lot of data to China servers.
@@palvini Its not about what you are watching kind of data. From the box's app it can get your login info, and upto a point your payment info (credit card etc). But thats not the main issue. The main issue is that you have connected the device in your home network. That means the device has local network access to literally every device that is connected to your router. Yes there are firewalls to prevent such connections, but if there is even one vulnerability anywhere, thats literally a backdoor entry to any other device. Could be your phone, or your computer or anything else.
If you're using google home devices and Android phone Google TV streamer is no brainer , but if you invested in Apple you should get the Apple tv ,this is why I don't buy Apple devices I want freedom, at the end both of them they can't touch Nvidia Shield capabilities
Not quite like that, friend. I'm an Apple user, I have an Apple TV 4K and I bought a Google TV. Some applications I use can only be installed on my TV box via APK. Unfortunately, Apple is very closed to installing certain applications.

I'm using Projectivity Launcher on my Google Streamer and it's perfect to avoid adds and you still get all the features you need plus more.

You can't cast from an android phone to apple tv. that's one disadvantage that sways me away from it

I love that I see captions when I skip back on Apple TV, but I wish I could specify the time they are displayed. 10 seconds is often not enough.
If you skip back twice in a row, it will turn them on for 20 seconds, but I get what you mean though, would be cool to adjust that in settings. - Josh

How do you cast to an Apple TV from an Android device? Vice versa it works with Google Home in my experience.
You can’t unless the app itself (like RUclips) supports Cast. But there’s no native way to do it.

Free live TV. US (and wherever else) only, not available in the UK. PS: The Google streamer can be set to show apps only on the home screen.

Nope. I use my sony tv alongside sony S400 sound system.

Mine does that too. I have to go back and close the app and relaunch it to sync normally with my HomePods. It does sound great though.
Can never find any info on this: can you cast to the google streamer ad hoc (without WiFi) like you can on the Apple TV?

Apple is great for the people who hate playing with their devices. They just want something fast and easy and they are willing to pay for it. Android gives you options and tools to play but you need to read and learn. For certain people I can see why they like apple but I like to break my devices and see how they work.

Sometimes it can be tricky if it’s buried in something. It has that warm cold type detection. You can get pretty close but it doesn’t quite work as good as the iPhone to AirTag or apple watch feature on the newer watches.

Issue with the shield though is that it is long due for an upgrade, and the fact that it is still being sold at the same price. Although for an android streaming box, I'd still hold on to my old shield than upgrade to a new one.

I returned the Apple TV 4K as the RUclips app sucked on it. I know that's Googles fault but still. Ended up getting Google TV that works great with Googles services.

Going forward/backward in a video on RUclips is a joke. You press right button and you expect to go 10 seconds forward, instead only the cursor moves on the seek bar, then you need to press the middle button to confirm. Now the middle button is a touch sensor with swipe, trying to click it you move randomly to another position…
Hmmm so basically this video was done by an Apple fanboy telling me why Apple anything is better. "More clickable button" to offset a lack of missing find my remoter... LOL OK. I disagree with the GUI advantage you claim Apple has.
The bottom line is an Apple fanboy will not be buying Google Streaming TV and an Android fanboy will not be buying Apple TV... so it "deep" ecosystem is a mute point.

Issue with those though is that its not really secure. If your network isn't that protected, it is most definitely sending a lot of data to China servers.

@@palvini Its not about what you are watching kind of data. From the box's app it can get your login info, and upto a point your payment info (credit card etc). But thats not the main issue. The main issue is that you have connected the device in your home network. That means the device has local network access to literally every device that is connected to your router. Yes there are firewalls to prevent such connections, but if there is even one vulnerability anywhere, thats literally a backdoor entry to any other device. Could be your phone, or your computer or anything else.

If you're using google home devices and Android phone Google TV streamer is no brainer , but if you invested in Apple you should get the Apple tv ,this is why I don't buy Apple devices I want freedom, at the end both of them they can't touch Nvidia Shield capabilities
Not quite like that, friend. I'm an Apple user, I have an Apple TV 4K and I bought a Google TV. Some applications I use can only be installed on my TV box via APK. Unfortunately, Apple is very closed to installing certain applications.
