I know David was joking with that "I think we need to move on," but I would actually looooove to see an episode about public transit on this show. There actually are a lot of ways that tech innovation can improve and expand these systems, and a lot of places in the rest of the world where it's actually happening. A deep dive into this whole convo would be extremely informative and helpful!
Sentence structure, grammatical genders, etc. will make real time translation very difficult. If it's translating literally word for word it won't necessarily make sense in the other languages, you need a full sentence, and often context to get an accurate translation.
Or the real time translation will world, but there will be some deciphering necessary since the grammar will be different, that’s the only thing I can think of
Read time translation has two tasks: 1. Detect whether the input can already be translated without ambiguity; 2. If so, translate the text. Always hard, but not impossible.
Google forcing Chrome to use this new engine that makes adblocking much more difficult to enhance their own advertising platform is a good reason why Chrome needs to be detached from Google. Regarding Marquez's question about "what prevents Google from being a shadow owner of new independent Chrome" - The judge will likely set up a lot of rules and restrictions around the breakup to prevent exactly that.
@ramblesrandom i only delete hateful comments or slurs...could care less about the speeding comments tbh 😅..have at it just don't be a jerk to your fellow waveformers
As someone who is into both fashion/design and cars (probably to an unhealthy extent), I have a lot to say about Jaguar’s weird rebrand. While I wasn’t surprised Ferrari started their own high end fashion brand (outside of their usual logo merch/racing gear), seeing Jaguar do this kind of weird fashion-looking ad is rather surprising. What’s more surprising is that it isn’t classic tailoring for men and women which would fit along with their usual heritage styling. I don’t have an utter disgust like a lot in that particular comment section…I’m just confused on the design language of the garments being shown. When I think Jaguar and fashion (even as someone who really doesn’t care much for any of their cars), I picture a close resemblance to what designers like Ralph Lauren has built up. Even a collaboration would make more sense. I just don’t get it. I was so confused I went to the website and thought there was somehow a clothing brand that got the website but they aren’t related to the manufacturer at all, but how wrong I was. Again, I just don’t get it. I can’t even imagine what the concept car would look like either. Edit: I’ve always liked the Jaguar XJR15.
people complain about rebrands but here’s the truth (in a designer): your personal opinion is entirely irrelevant, it doesn’t matter. these processes might seem expensive but they are not. Rebrands always generate serious cash for the company’s. always. Recently Kia and Pringles went through the wringer on this too. universal hate but guess what: both have made a ton of cash because the strategies were spot on. all that negatively not only was misplayed but incorrect. The only mistake Jaguar made here was announcing it. All they needed to do is change it and skip the video.
On Episode 214, Adam got 3 points and Ellis got 2 points, then Ellis got another point on episode 236, so technically Adam and Ellis should be on the board with 3 points each
If Chrome/Chromium actually gets sold. That will be the deal of the century, at the very least, a few decades to come. Chromium is literally like a modern day One Ring, "One ring to rule them all"
The V4 chargers never said they would use CCS, ccs is dead and any car that uses it just has to use an adapter. All the new chargers are NACS. Also they never said they would swap out the v3 cabinets. The new v4 cabinets support 8 stalls vs only 4 from v3 so they’re just building new stations.
JaGUar speculation station, choo choo!! 1. They redid the typeface with specific capitalization to try and get everyone to say it the British way 2. They’re going to go only EV, and aim for the high high end luxury segment (with Rolls and Bentley) and target the younger new money individuals with their Bauhaus-lookin ass design I feel they’re going to do low volume, high margin luxury EVs. Thank you for coming to my Ted Talk.
Google shouldn't sell Chrome. Instead, they should be forced to let users pick between different options while setting up a new device or app rather than having their options set as defaults. For Example, when you install Chrome, it asks you what search engine you want to use and lets you pick between four or five options.
Less hostile to begin with, don't they all; until you get to millions of users. And then the moderation and control will come leading to what we have already.
One of the problems with real-time translation is that different languages use different sentence structures (for example, where in the sentence the subject is placed). So, actual real-time translation between languages with very different grammar/sentence structures will probably only be possible if the AI could get really good at predicting what you were going to say based on the context of the whole conversation. Otherwise, it would need to wait for you to finish the whole sentence to accurately translate it.
The jaguar ad serves a simple purpose: To connect the brand to a different type of demographic and ethnicity. They want you to associate a diverse group of people with the new logo. No more just an old white man's dream, jaguar is now for everyone. Or so they want to tell us.
To everyone, besides old white men... Do you hear yourself? And BTW. If you saw the response of the people, they not just didn't increase their base, but rather decreased it substantially. Going Woke isn't to connect to everyone, because you exclude the traditional people.
long term, if their strategy around this is right. it will work. they need to do a couple of full model releases to see where they go. this is going to take a bit of time so 2027/28 i guess
take a look at the rebrand of Kia that was ‘doomed to fail’, pepsi, pringles. all the keyboard warriors don’t make a dent. these rebrands almost always work to generate more sales. the only mistake Jaguar made was announcing it, which they didn’t really need to do
For the last 10 years Jaguar has been spending lots of money making all their cars great to drive while skimping on interior features. They figured eventually the driving dynamics would help them get people to consider them when buying a 3 series or an X3. Unfortunately it didn't work so the next logical step is a rebrand. I really don't have much a problem with it (although the ad is a bit cringe. Don't put "copy nothing" in the forefront of a generic ad).
their only mistake was to announce it. if this logo had appeared on a new model and the announcement was about the model, they wouldn’t have got the negative comments. this makes me think they are done all of this on purpose. which makes me think they are going to announce at least one model that’s insane that all the ‘old men’ would actually want
Interested to see the comment of "not moving everything into the cloud" when Microsoft just announced the 365 Link computer that is their version of Chromebook. I actually see that 365 Link being useful in a corporation.
Read about "Semantic versioning", it's not about amount of features it's about compatibility of existing API (apps) with previous one. I don't know if Android follows this or not and whether their API in major update has breaking changes though.
I think David in particular really overestimates what people do on their personal computers. They use the internet. That's pretty much it. And Chromebooks are perfect for that and cheap. Also, Google Cloud Ready is one of the greatest things ever. You can just install ChromeOS on any old windows laptop and now you have a fast Chromebook that can still probably do everything you need to do.
Apple has never shifted everything into the cloud because they are a device company, incentivised for customers to buy devices as their services are not competent. Google wants everything in the cloud as they are a services company. Powerful Chromebooks are useful when you boot them into a linux distribution at which point they become even more usable and productive than a Macbook.
45:30 Phone Link on Windows is that. Its exactly what they are tlaking about. Build in 1st party application that allows you to send texts/images/read notifications/ share easily. Downside is that it doesn't utilize RCS (like the online google messages does)

Honestly Windows comes with Edge (built on Chromium), MacOs comes with Safari. Chromium is also open source and there are plenty of third party companies making browsers. For people to use Google Chrome they have to make a conscious decision that they want to use a Google product. I don't really get it how is it the fault of Google that they have built a superior product that people prefer over the out of box experience. If anything MS and Apple should be forced to sell their browser division.
