I fucking love Ellis. "I have to stop using my computer for 5 minutes every nine weeks" 😂😂 💯 Finally someone says what I've been feeling dirty about thinking for the last bazillion years.
Couldn't disagree more. I want to turn it off every time he starts talking. He's got a way too high of an opinion of himself when I reality he acts like a 10 year old who thinks he's the funniest kid in the class but in reality everyone dislikes him.
I love to see kids playin around without dad's supervision. Always jumps off tracks and mere chaos. I didn'd even start watching but I can smell the fun.
I find it ironic they spent 20 minutes on hearing loss in an episode with no captions.. Elias, nice try with your explanation however, hearing loss/damage occurs when the decibel level in any frequency (within the range of human hearing) is exceeded. Any ear covering that reduces the decibel level in the ear canal to a safe volume would be fine. Foam ear plugs do this better than wax because in addition to blocking the sound with a seal, the material is better at absorbing or dampening sound whereas wax reflects it and is only as good as the seal.. Also Elias attempted to touch on bone conduction which was partially true. Bone can be used to conduct sound past a damaged or malformed ear canal however it requires an implanted medal conduction rod. It doesn't just happen when you plug your ears. Individuals with nerve damage that use a cochlear implant like myself, receive sound in the version of electrical impulses that directly stimulate the nerve endings in the cochlea.
Love the podcast guys, your humor is always on point 😂 If I can make a suggestion, I would ask that allowing multiple tangents when discussing spec breakdowns and comparisons gets confusing. You’re all very witty and smart so the jokes just keep coming and the real discussion gets lots in the minutiae of the humor. Keep up the good work 👍
44:24 The most hilarious moment in this podcast was when in the middle of Davids sentence “because at some point the adds are going to st…” Roll 2 x RUclips adds MID SENTENCE. “…Start coming”
Re: hardhat HoloLens. I used them when I worked in Water Utilities as a mechanical engineer. The civil engineers would have stuff like underground pipes and valve locations mapped in ArcGIS and when we went out in the field we would take the HL connected to a hotspot and could see where stuff was via GPS without having to set up a massive digging operation.
I feel like the best thing would be smart glasses, headphones, and a watch based compute module. If you had a folding keyboard track pad/compute module to make the glasses a large screen "laptop" killer. This would all be a pocketable all day fit. To replace phone and laptop
Yeah I feel like people are overly pessimistic about the ads, and that's ruining their vision of what this technology could be, and it doesn't quite make sense. They've been saying that would happen to Laptops/Desktops and Android for years, but the only time I get ads are when using apps, which makes sense. Any OS that has ads you can't remove or that cost too much to remove would fail (The only example I can think of is Kindle, and their adless version is way more popular, and everyone I know that bought the ad-ful one eventually paid (or complained) to get them removed) plus, Meta has been doing a lot to reverse their negative image so they can be the Android/Google of AR/VR, and they would be insane to throw away the hundreds of millions they've spent to get AR/VR where it is today over some ad revenue that would dry up almost instantly when people just go back to their phones to avoid ads. I think it makes sense that your phone/laptop will be replaced by a pair of AR glasses with AI assistants built in.
As someone who got Lasik and is enjoying not having to wear glasses indoors, I would really prefer these smart glasses to just be something I wear as sunglasses or when working. Life without glasses is really nice.
I personally use concert earplugs like Eargasm earplugs, Loops experience, and a hanful of others I've tried. Personally I prefer those to using my airpods noise cancelling, and they work great. (They help reduce decibels but mostly overall dont ruin the frequencies, just reduce everything at an equal level.)
I think the ear plugs/AirPods conversation kinda missed a big thing. Like the foam and wax plugs that just kill the music versus using AirPods or other ANC headphones which are altering the music... Why not just get silicon ear plugs with concert specific filters. Stuff like Eargasm or Loop that are silicon tips with attenuation filters inside. I feel like those meet the ideal middle ground where they lower the volume of the music for you but they also aren't reproducing/passing the sound through a mic like ANC headphones are doing. It's just the actual music, just not as aggressively loud.
Big loop fan here. I've used them at a bunch of metal gigs and I find it so much easier to 'hear' the music rather than the live mixing causing things to sound more like a wall of noise.
20:44 There are also lots of “flat frequency response” earplugs like Earasers or Eargasm plugs which passively let a little high frequency to pass through to your ears so you don’t perceive the huge low pass effect you would with normal earplugs. I have not tried AirPods at a concert, but these specialty earplugs are great.
My buddy and I found hearing protection that did a really good job of lowering the volume but not cancelling all the frequencies. I forget what the tips were made of.
Can’t agree more with David, Hold and catch fire is one of the best tv shows of all time for everyone who likes tech. Another great episode without the big boss btw great job team ! 😂💪

Just a thought on the Meta Orion - could they combine the Puck and the Wristband for a "watch-like" form factor to reduce the components you need to carry with you? ...I'll take a 30% commission for the idea.
You could have a shoulder mounted battery that would give you whole day power for the glasses. You can connect the glasses and the battery either with an extremely soft and flexible cable or some wireless technology.
If the goal of the hearing aid is to aid in hearing, I really think that the hearing aid industry will be fine if they're main focus is aiding in hearing. Once the airpods have all day battery life and a more secure fit, then the conversation can change
My thing about this technology is I got Lasik to not have to wear glasses. It’s nice not having to remember one more thing you need to take with you everywhere.
The point about being faster at running the browser is more about processing updates to content on the page. Web pages today have a lot of scripts and content. So, after a page loads from the network, it would just feel much snappier if scripts process faster.
If we're going towards smart glasses that look like normal glasses, then I definitely want to be able to wear them all day. I already wear glasses all day for vision, so might as well have compute in them too.
24:29 hearing aids also have a goal that is very individual and not at all related to music enjoyment... if you think about it, a person who needs one can only hear within a specific range but cannot hear the vocal range. A hearing aid needs to convert vocal sounds the person can't hear into a range they can. it's a tool that is only about giving the user the ability for communication
personally where I think AR makes a lot of practical sense as a tool, is in transportation, manufacturing, and construction. for example being able to look at the plans in 3D overlaid over top of actual construction; seeing your turn by turn driving directions overlay directly over the view through the windshield so you don't have to take your eyes from the road and you know exactly where your turn is rather than finding out after you pass it because you have to keep looking at the map; in manufacturing you could overlay production and sensor data over the actual machine. I think it where they are kind of screwing up with these glasses is in trying to make them look "normal" when in fact they should really be leaning into the cyberpunk aesthetic... after all the only thing more cyberpunk then augmented reality would be a direct brain linkage to your wearable or embedded hardware.
I have noticed every time that mkbhd is not in the podcast the podcast doesn’t have chapters which i use a lot, just goes to show how some small details matter and how mkbhd is the octopus head😅
There's chapters! They just are very poorly implemented by YT and sometimes take a while to actually activate, or if we change anything description wise they'll disappear for a while and then come back whenever YT feels like it. Adam does all the chapters, Marques has nothing to do with it 😅
one Byte is 8 bits, and with 8 bits values between 0 and 255 can be addressed. So if every episode of the podcast were a unique number, all 256 episodes (#0 - #255) could be stored in 8 bits. Or one byte.
@@coffinwood-blackheim Than you for your reply. The reason I got confused is I thought he meant 256 bits is a single byte but now I see. That makes sense. 👍👍
In the EDM scene there's these rubber earplugs that have a small opening with a filter that allows some highs in. I use them all the time now. A friend of a friend recently lost their hearing in one of their ears and hadn't used earplugs ever
There are silicone ear plugs that have some specially designed filters in them (kind of like the dampers in fancy earphones), those are waaaaay cheaper than these ANC earphones for going to concerts, and i also trust them more, as there is no active component, so less to go wrong with them. Any bets on how many times he rehearsed the disclaimer? I'm thinking attempt 4.
