Sorry, but Apple TV 4K (2022) Quick Media Switching is a LETDOWN
HTML-код
- Опубликовано: 30 сен 2024
- We tested the Quick Media Switching (QMS) function on the Apple TV 4K (2022) box together with an LG G3 OLED.
Quick Media Switching is an HDMI 2.1a feature that promises to eliminate AV blackouts, but only when the frame rate is changed, not when there's a switch in resolution or dynamic range formats.
The "Includes Paid Promotion" message in this video refers to the sponsorship by Ultra High Speed HDMI Cable manufacturer Zeskit. If you're thinking about getting a new HDMI 2.1 cable, please support this channel by considering buying from Zeskit:

That’s why this is one of my favorite TV channels, it covers things that no other channel covers!
whats the point of having apple tv box if there is an app on tvs ?
@@Luhiner
They are not the same thing
@@Luhiner I can only speak for myself, but the power of Apple TVs make using them for media consumptions so much smother, from quickly opening and switching apps, to using airplay, to even controlling your smart home!
@@Luhinerthe apps are better quality, there’s more variety of apps, the upscaling of content is better, the Apple TV does frame matching, keyboard input is much easier on AppleTV because you can use your phone (syncs passwords as well etc). It’s a night and day difference in user experience.
A lot of channels don’t even have a firm grasp of the concepts Vincent covers, even if they aspired to cover them
I would love to see you review, in excruciating detail, the "MadVR Envy" video processor and see if it's really worth the exorbitant price (which I highly doubt); It would make for an interesting video I think.
Any chance you can review the new Samsung UN65CU7000D?
Does QMS have any affect on VRR flicker in gaming?
I haven't looked into it, so I don't understand the point of hooking An Apple TV/Nvidia Shield/Roku to a smart TV. Why isn't this redundant?
Because of apples own stuff like their homepod speakers.
Apple tv is way faster/smoother than the built in TV apps, my lg tv always was slow to open and scroll through shows/movies while the apple is extremely quick to load and scroll
Nvidia Shield TV Pro 🆙 scaling 🏆 + Monster Cobalt 💯
This dude is just another level in terms of truthful journalism. 👏❤️
Rare thing today to get honest journalism. You have to dig deep for them and weed through the shills and paid off journalists.
Speaking for myself the "QMS-VRR" [POPUP] is far worse and much more annoying than the completely blackout pause you get switching between output resolutions. So hopefully there's a way to turn that notification off!!!
Exactly what I was thinking. They should have just put the ”QMS-VRR” text inside the smaller HDR/Dolby vision popup. The current popup is way too annoying.
In my experience, the best way to stop experiencing blackouts is to stop drinking.
Thank you Vincent for this video. Question: With Apple TV is there a way to see the Video resolution (LG TV)? thanks
I appreciate you making these informative videos trying to bring useful information to the jungle on modern standards , but the already foggy landscape of specifications is getting out of hand.
Manufacturers need to get their shit together.
The planets need to align to get it to work... Wait, that's happening tonight...😂
Hi, have you had the opportunity to compare Fire TV 4K with Appla TV 4K and see if there is any difference in image quality?

I've been struggling this problem for far too long until I stumbled upon your video after an extensive internet search led me through Reddit to you. Thank you for the switch to settings on LG TV which solved my issue. I have both Liked and subscribed!
I personally find this setting useful for SDR sports. Some services output at 59.94 while others output at 60.00. This change causes a blackout. You could leave your ATV in SDR with match DR and FR (like an AV enthusiast would). Since you don’t change dynamic ranges then it wouldn’t have a blackout. I’m guessing in Europe you will also appreciate this if you change a lot from 60 to 50 Hz as well. Then again I don’t know if you all have HDR sports via streaming widely available. Here in America we still have ESPN with glorious 720p.
If you have the ATV set to SDR then you get the screensavers in SDR only which is a huge loss
The resolution of the video shouldn’t have any blackout effect with QMS. The Apple TV is the one that’s doing the upscaling here, not the TV. Therefore, playing any video that’s in the same dynamic range as the default output with match dynamic range enabled that’s lower than 4K should not result in any blackouts because the output resolution is not being changed.
@MysteryMii: Good point. We were referring to the resolution change on Apple TV UI, as shown at 3:35 in this video.
@@hdtvtest on one hand there is no reason why the ATV should change resolution. However, this feature would not have helped with sources that change the resolution, I’m thinking like back in the day with cable TV, some STB would change resolution based on the channel (1080i or 720p) and that change was annoying. This made DIRECTV encode all channels in 1080i so users wouldn’t have that annoying change, but maybe I’m getting old.
This is important for people that uses a media box that supports resolution switching to allow the TV to do the upscaling like Kodi on a HTPC or Nvidia Shield.
For what it's worth, I moved from a C9 to a C3 (77"). I usually use my AppleTV for streaming.
I really like the QMS (Quick Media Switching) functionality. The C3 and the AppleTV work very well with each other with QMS on.
Actually. Your “not tip” about setting the ATV to Dolby Vision and turning off match dynamic range is a brilliant setting. It nearly removes all blackout for us non QMS users. It makes the entire operation more fluid and no more annoying blackouts. HDR content tone maps perfectly to DV as far as my eye can tell. SDR does much the same. Have not noticed any issues. What I have noticed is no more LG art gallery images popping up when I play content! :)
SDR feels much brighter on my TV if configured this way.
@@zcqian it is if directly compared but it matches the brightness of DV levels in a way that doesn’t seem offending. At least to me.
When I set up my appletv 4k 2022 it set up Dolby vision during the process. This also left off match frame rate and content. All works perfectly for me with these settings.
DISASTER
All those setting in current tv's with this kind of accessories connected to them are Extremly Complicated.
Turn this ON if that is OF
Set this to adjust that
Anable one thing then disable another !!!
Does Apple TV 4K 3rd gen have better picture/audio quality than the built in TV apps? Especially for audio since you can go direct to AV receiver instead of using eArc?
I’ve been looking for the same question also
FYI: RUclipsTV, not regular regular RUclips, will only display content in 4k if you are on the 2022 4K ATV.
Again, I’m talking about RUclipsTV
@HDTVTest Hey Vincent, I have not seen this question answered anywhere before. If you are using an Apple TV 4K (any generation) you have the option of choosing YCbCr, RGB High or RGB Low for your HDMI Output type under Settings > Video and Audio. Is there any advantage of one over any of the others? I still have my crusty old LG B6 and use RGB Low with Black Level set to Low in the LG settings. Any advice on the setting for the highest picture quality you can give here would be appreciated!
I have been leaving my ATV set to DV 60hz as there are now a lot of apps such as Peacock where you will only get the HDR feed when the box is set to either HDR or DV. Also some sports apps will only give you the 4k feed when the unit is forced to 60hz, such as Fox Sports. Even setting the ATV to SDR 4k doesn't fix this. You can see this if you use Xcode and enable the playback HUD. When will all these apps fix these stupidisum! I used to love matching frame rate etc, now I just leave it set.
Hello, I just purchased a APTV 4K Gen 3 box and see no QMS setting in the menu. It has the latest update, my LG C3 also updated and does have QMS option. Can you tell us why some APTV 4k boxes show QMS option? I have the APTV 4K into the Denon AVR-X4800H and out to the TV. Is this an issue? APTV cable test is good. Thank for all the very good videos.
No reviews mention the picture quality difference. I have lg g3 oled and its web os apps have better picture quality than apple tv apps.
How come web os has better quality??
Hi Vincent 😉
One further Question:
Is it possible to apply TrueMotion (MotionInterpolation), while QMS is activated?
Does the 2023 Apple TV fix the SDR green tint when using YCbCr? Does it fix the strobing effect of 24 fps SDR content?
Not sure what the strobing thing you’re talking about is, but I can confirm YCbCr still has a green tint and RGB High fixes it.
He is a sony guy giving a bad review over a relatively minor issue. I had apple TV for 10 years and never had a problem switching between different media or formats. It also had to do with your other set up as well. So if you have old equipment you are going to have more issues switching around.
The greatest sin in this video was Vincent clicking on Love & Thunder so many times. Disney may actually think that someone liked that movie! 😜
Good explanation! Although I must say for Apple TV 4K, for me it feels like the frame rate is more important for most home users, because it’s conversion of sdr to Dolby vision or HDR is really well. As in I have the feeling that how Apple converts it, it is still really close to how the creator intended it to look, only with a bit more punch. It seems if you are going to convert image (what most consumers will do, for extra punch) Apple TV’s algorithms does it a lot better and more natural than the television. How do you feel about this?
Why is this feature not supported on the 2nd or 1st generation Apple TV 4k? They all have HDMI 2.1 ports.
Would love to know if Apple "fixed" the color calibration function on thei apple TV since your last video from 2 years ago
I assume if you also route your signals through a receiver, the receiver also needs to support QMS?
Essentially QMS only works for Refresh Rate changes, not resolution nor HDR changes.
You "don't" have to change resoluzion, the only problem is HDR/DV
anyone know what the quick green flash at 5:09 is caused by? my c3 is brand new and happened a few times watching hbo natively
Vincent - thank you mate! Watching your video has been very informing. Thank you so much - I was getting upset with the new G3!!
Great coverage! Hope LG bring this feature to their older TVs through a firmware update
It definitely reduces the blackout.
Being an early adopter keeps getting worse and worse. The hardware seems great but the software has bugs and company's don't seem to care enough of about quality or after purchase support. Maybe Apple will fix this but if it's LG problem I doubt it. On to next year's TVs for LG.
This isn’t a bug. QMS is working as advertised. People just thought it would do something which it was never intended to do for some reason.
OOO thanks vincent, I have an old sony x900e and was having pretty nasty colours due to tone mapping (apple 4k 2022) was in 4kHDR by default, seems milage may vary but based on my own experience, having the apple 4k set to HDR without range swapping was a net negative for SDR content.
If that's the case I don't mind not having the QMS.
Why is QMS now advertised as a "HDMI 2.1a feature", when it was part of the original list of HDMI 2.1 features?
Also I don't get why it's a letdown, but I personally already knew QMS was only supposed to provide seamless transitions only between different refresh rates. Was it advertised differently by Apple?
Exactly. QMS was listed as a feature when I bought my c9. And now it is only available to the latest model? What a joke from LG to push forced obsolescence like this.
Yeah… this seems strange that they market it now as a 2.1a feature.
If you go to the office website with HDMI specs there’s nothing about 2.1a and QMS is supported from 2.1
Just another marketing BS to lock out features and make you buy new stuff that u should have to.
No it was never advertised to affect changes to dynamic range. That was just ignorance on the public’s part and wishful thinking
@@spacecadet2172 we are not talking about what QMS is for and how it works… just why it won’t work with HDMI 2.1 and on C2 and older tv.
With the release of LG C3 they are marketing it as a HDMI 2.1A and not simply HDMI2.1 feature… witch is just BS
@@kakem0ne I think Space Cadet was just replying to my second question.
Thank you for this video and detailed explanation. It helped resolve my issue between my Apple TV 4k box and my new LG TV.
If you have the new Apple TV, can you test if it can convert Dolby Vision into HDR10+ and if yes, how well it works?
Nothing does that
Would Sourced-Based Tone Mapping (SBTM) eliminate the AV blackout when switching the dynamic range mode?
Having Dolby HDR on all menus is horrible for an OLED TV. You're looking at image retention and burn in. No big deal with the black out. Instead they should enable 8K through the HDMI 2.1 import and YT 8K.
@jennifergala: Agreed, which is why we still recommend using a "4K SDR" base with [Match Dynamic Range] & [Match Frame Rate] engaged, as illustrated at 5:39 in this video.
If you do, however, show Dolby Vision all the time you can shorten the time to show the aerials (the screensavers) by going to: Settings > General > Screen Saver and selecting Start After.
It’s a reasonable mitigation. I’ve had a couple LG OLED displays paired with an AppleTV for a number of years now without any UI burn in… but I also have a pretty good habit of turning on the aerials when I’m not watching anything.
It is a poor design if it makes any difference. Having HDR enabled should simply means it can display things in the higher brightness range if something is created to be in that range. They shouldn't be designing any stagnant object to bright, in sdr or hdr given what they can do to OLED tvs.
nVidia needs to despirately upgrade and replace the nVidia Shield Pro. But with them gimping GameStream and then not having a real replacement to the Tegra X1+ I have my doubts.
About the only use I have for an AppleTV is you can lock them down with an MDM and they support Proxies out of the box. Proxy support makes them a better solution for use on corporate networks.
Solved my problem thank you!!!
wow this was ridiculously informative. Thank you!!
One thing to keep in mind if you use the “purist” setting to match dynamic range of the content being played; this can be very painful if you watch a lot of videos on the RUclips app - dynamic range and resolutions are all over the place for YT videos, so you might see a lot of black screens as you browse and play videos… note that it even impacts ads, which can be a different format from the video being played. 😐
This has been fixed for quite awhile now on an update for the RUclips app for AppleTV. Also the output res of AppleTV never changes, it upscales everything to a constant 4K for all content.
@@spacecadet2172 I'll have to enable match dynamic range again to check it out. I disabled the match because my kid was complaining when watching RUclips.
@@spacecadet2172 weil then explain me why the constant blackout when match framrate and dynamic range is on 😂
THIS is exactly my issue with the blackouts. RUclips is constantly blacking out and it causes you to miss a portion of the video. I also watch NFL on DAZN and I like to switch through different games on Sundays. The blackouts drive me crazy. I’ll be trying this fix for sure.
Why so disappointed though? It’s exactly working as advertised, so what is the problem here?
@Dennis G.: As shown at 1:33 in this video, Apple advertises that "Quick Media Switching allows televisions to switch display formats quickly" without clarifying that it only works on frame rate changes.
Should we be using YCbCr or RGB High on the LG C2?
YCbCr
Your smooth media switching to that Promo wasn't a letdown tho, was it?!😂
What to do with sony x90l
Are there any receivers or pre/pros with legit QMS now?
I was looking at buying one yesterday and have my eyes set still, and then today you put this video up! Good timing Vincent
Hi Vincent 😉
Another Question:
On your Video, I see there is a short Pause (freeze frame) when you Start the Playback within the Disney+ App…
For Example at Position:
00:05:00
Is this happening because of QMS is enabled or is this just a „Bug“ in the Disney+ App?
Could you test it in another App and confirm that the „Switch“ is completely invisible with no „freeze Frame“ with QMS enabled?
Why not just use the LG TV Apps which seem to work fine for me
What is that stand used on the G3 in this video ?
QMS seems like a finicky solution for a non problem.
Hearing the click of the remote when he shows menu navigations while still narrating always trips me out in headphones
Apple TV just received an update today (16.4) … maybe some bugs have been fixed? I’m sure this will be improved overtime with firmware/software updates from both companies.
This isn’t a bug. It’s just not something that is supported by the QMS standard. This affects all devices and is not limited to the AppleTV.
Does Quick Media Switching work with the latest AV Receivers from the big brands like Denon that have HDMI 2.1? I watch stuff with all kinds of different framerates and am sensitive to stuttering so QMS would be a crucial feature for me.
Unfortunately nobody knows because the HDMI have just changed the standard, if a AV supports HDMI 2.1 doesn't mean that it supports QMS - VRR
G3 review for when?
QMS is the most disappointing feature ever. I have a Sony A80J and a Hisense U8H, both relatively recent TVs that support VRR, but not QMS. So I guess I’m just stuck with blank screens or having Apple TV outputting everything to the same frame rate and resolution (ugh).
I have a CX, I don’t understand why the tv’s internal apps don’t have a similar approach to frame rate, changing it according to content. Real Cinema option doesn’t appear to do that, at least it only tries to mimic it in my experience, am I correct?
Almost no devices besides the AppleTV have this feature. You get what you pay for.
@@spacecadet2172 i would expect the tv itself, capable of variable frame rate, could do this. I imagine that app developers would have to implement it, but it doesn't appear to be available as an api in webos
I was having similar problems as well with a connected Samsung 8K 85” tv, I ultimately returned the AppleTv because was having too many issues.
May I ask, why does Apple TV offer beyond the WebOS/Android system that comes with your TV?
same, i have a 78 in samsung ks9800 and have the same problem, flashing picture, so i use the nvidia shield mostly
So, basically, a bunch of morons designed a standard (QMS), that doesn't eliminate blackouts when switching content formats and neither TV nor set top box manufacturers have given a damn about it until 2023, some decade after the introduction of HDR.
This is a very serious issue that destroys the user experience when you want the best quality from every source. We need a standard that does it right. QMS is definitely not it.
Until a real solution is implemented and this QMS junk is deprecated, Apple could always output 4K Dolby Vision WITHOUT "upconverting" SDR to HDR, by just putting SDR in a 100~200 nits HDR envelope. This wouldn't destroy the color palette like it does now.
However, I don't know what they can do when the source is HDR10+. I don't think they can transcode it to Dolby Vision, can they?
NOV 2023
my apple tv 4k just fine now supports VPNS
17.3 IOS
NO ISSUES HERE
Does turning match frame rate on on the new Apple TV 4K still introduce lip sync issues as it does on the original Apple TV 4K?
It does for me on my Sony X90j. The only work around ls for me were to change audio format on the ATV to Dolby Digital (which disables Atmos) or connect the ATV using EARC.
It must depend on the TV as I have the LG C2 and with Match Frame On, there's zero lip sync issues
Please tell me! Why do you need an Apple TV 4K set-top box for such a modern TV like the LG G3 ??? I have been using the LG G2 for a year now and it fully copes with all the tasks of viewing various content. Maybe I'm not 100% using my TV???
Hi Vincent I am subscriber on your Chanel years now I recently say lg responded with auto dimming issue u mentioned on recent video can I please mention this issue too?
The problem is simple. People using macOS cannot by default without paying a for a third party solution write to NTFS formatted drives. And LG OLED TVs do not support any of the macOS proprietary formats like HFS+.
The only free and universally working file format is exFAT. This allows for use of files above 4GB (which is a limit of FAT32) and also allows for use on both Macs and PCs.
LG should consider adding support for exFAT formatted USB devices and make it easier for the vast number of macOS users to use their USB drives with LG OLED TVs. 🙏
Sadly Zeskit they don't have 10 meters HDMI 2.1 cable was hoping they will have.
I got aptv 4k 2022 for my c9 oled tbh there is no need for this box quality is the same and it is a nightmare with all the bugs it has I sent it back tbh I couldn’t justify the 180£ price tag
Oh wow. Another HDMI feature that is broken between different brands. Such surprise
It's like HDMI CEC all over again
This ATV is terrible! Much worse for picture and audio quality than the previous gen. Look at the teardown comparison.
Thanks for making the video, can you please confirm something for me before I make a purchase. If you log into the RUclips app on the Apple TV 4K, can you see your private and unlisted videos within the app? I ask as our so called smart tv has the youtube app and when logged into it and I select 'my videos' only those videos that are visible, I cant see all my other videos? I have tried this on the PS5 and another smart tv and it appears there must be a limitation with the youtube app on certain devices. The only way I can play my unlisted or private videos is to chromecast the video from my iphone or ipad to the tv which is pointless when the tv already has a youtube app.
I’m still squeezing life out of an old Apple TV HD box. Good enough for 1080p displays with plex.
I have a 78 in samsung ks9800 with the apple tv gen 3 going through a denon x6400h and have the same problem, flashing picture, so i use the nvidia shield mostly
OT I know, but can we pause a moment to notice how un-Apple-like the whole "enable Dolby Vision" thing is? It's totally non-obvious to the user that you should probably never choose that, and it isn't explained (except by channels like this one) what that setting really does. I really hope Apple irons that out. Steve Jobs would have a fit if he saw that.
If I buy this Tv having already newest Apple TV QMS won't be thing that would convince me to buying it. Nice additions but nowhere near groundbreaking feature.
I have AppleTV on 4K Dolby Vision with my Phillips Oled and have not noticed blackouts.
Do you really need QMS!? Really??
When is Yamaha going to roll out QMS to their RX-AXA receiver lineup?
Sheesh this is beyond anything I feel like I need to know. Is Apple TV 4K a better streaming box than an Xbox series S on low-mid tier LG 4k tv?
Apple TV is a let down in many ways, even my remote has such a big and frustrating lag. I often find myself just using my LG smart apps rather than the Apple TV.
Where is the LG OLED 2023 series review Vincent? Surely you have them at home/office?
i perfer to use my apple 4k 2 gen using 4K SDR but its funny how my apple tv keeps forcing 4k hdr as default after a few days of use. not to mention how youtube keeps locking up after a few days of use and then i am forced to reboot my apple tv to get youtube working properly again and of course changing back to SDR whenever that happens too. my apple 4k 1st gen never did this.
Hey man, was wondering could you do an Nvidia shield pro (2023/2022 version) review and maybe a comparison?
I thought I had a bad appletv. Went to Best Buy and got another one. Thanks to you, I was able to find the problem. The thing is: k don’t have the option of Qms under hdmi settings .
I setup the Apple TV on another tv…
How can I make the option to pop up?
for anyone who actually did research into what QMS was, this is expected. i've been irritated with all the people online for a couple years now hyping up QMS as if it was going to get rid of the dynamic range blackout.
It is still better than not having QMS. The black screen was so much quicker. I’m ok with the quick black screen but don’t want the notification for QMS. Currently the black screen can be 3 to 5 seconds.
The latest LG 3.30.67 has just broken my Apple TV 4K.
I should have watched his before setting it up would've saved some time. I was thinking it was hdmi deep colour setting which was putting apple in recovery mode and it took a while for me to figure out it was qms all along😅
#Avatar 2 The Way of the Water is out streaming on March 28th. #Ridiculousness #TheNaviAreSoBlue No Disney+ yet $$$$$$$$$$
I love this channel man.
Great Informative video, thank you for sharing. I got LG GX, Denon S970H, ‘22 Apple TV 4K, Zeskit Xtech 8’ & 3’ cables and after todays Apple TV update I no longer run into the black out issue.
I have a Apple 🍎 TV but I used the lg CX 77 native internal apps. Less issues and the sound and picture is virtually the same as the Apple TV
So I always buy Audioquest HDMIs, so should I make the switch to Zeskit?
Nobody talks about Quick Frame Transportation.
