We have. Check out "Dolby Vision on everything" video. This explains that we can use the HDFury Diva to access LLDV on any display. There is more to come on this..
Thank you. I had the apple 4k tv for about 6 months now and just assumed Dolby Vision was the one to use as that is suppose to be the best. But it did make the menu screen look very bright, which is unnecessary. I have OLED TV's and don't want to use the extra brightness. The Apple TV really seems like it wants you to use Dolby Vision all the time. I just changed it to 4k SDR and it is better and you still get Dolby Vision when the source is DV. Apple should know this and tell people how to set these up correctly like you guys have stated. I would bet that 95% of people have Dolby Vision set for everything like I did. I guess using DV all the time make SDR look like DV with upscaling and maxing out the contrast and brightness.
My tv supports hdr, but the picture is dull with washed out colours whenever Itry to play hdr content. I don't have apple tv 4k. I want to know if my tv performance will improve with Apple tv 4k with "Format" set at akSDR and "Match Content" set to OFF. Thanks
In the 2021 ATV 4K setting, it doesnt have the "Enable Dolby Vision" field. It just has the format and the rest of the stuff. Now when I set-up per above, and then when I select content on Netflix/Itunes for 4K Dolby Vision content, it is recognizing it likewise. My TV settings capture it as DV and has the color callibrations changed automatically. Now looks like there is an issue with HDR content on Amazon Prime, on ATV4K. It doesn't stream in HDR but 4K SDR. I have raised it in Apple forum and there's no resolution in sight.
I came across your video. Thanks for this!!!! I have a question regard my setup. I have a Sony str dh590 receiver. Should I connect my Apple TV 4K by using the pass through or connect the Apple TV directly to my Sony 4K TV then use optical cable for sound from tv to receiver? I am also using a high speed hdmi cable from ATV to receiver to TV. I saw little difference with settings that you recommended. I just want to make sure I maximize the 4K Dolby vision
Finally after dozens of videos I met you guys. With an Apple TV and a LG BX and I knew I could more out of it. Yesterday on white lotus my tv was amazing 🤩 Thank you. Now let see the audio…
Hi HTE, That was very informative, thanks. I have a q? that is driving me mad with my new Apple TV+. When it's directly connected to my LG SN8YG soundbar (connected to TV via HDMI arc), I get Dolby Atmos. When playing non Atmos movies soundbar says PCM. If I connect Apple TV+ direct to TV via HDMI (hd compable port), When playing non Atmos movies soundbar says Dolby Sound, and does sound better. Why?
My Apple TV 4K doesn't have that 'Enable Dolby Vision' setting under Video and Audio. Would it only show up if I have a Dolby Vision TV attached to it, which I don't, but plan to soon...or should it be there anyway?
Hi I appreciate your comment and your frustration but if I understand it this is a sonos issue not an appletv issue, also as a policy we do delete comments with harsh language in them..sorry.

I have a problem with HDR and dolby vision, in some scene in the night it get wash out really bad. I try different cable, and when I watch the same scene without HDR or dolby it look normal. What can it be?. And is only in when watching content in the ITunes. So strange. I have a vizio P series 2019.
HD Fury Diva in this case. The HD Fury Vertex 2 does the same. Main advantage is allowing lldv Dolby Vision on displays without DV. Including peojectors
By setting the system interface to 50Hz, the screensavers are not smooth. But if I put it on 60Hz, there are apps in Spain (including RUclips) that don't adapt the content and it looks laggy.
Enabling DV or HDR forces that mode. Not all content is just one or just the other. This produces all content exactly as it was intended. SDR is produced as SDR, HDR as HDR and DV as DV. Counterintuitive yes but we have proven it repeatedly. And we test regularly to ensure it hasnt changed
Home Theatre Engineering When setting it do DV or HDR there is still the option to match content. Doesn’t setting to DV or HDR only force the menus to that and then when watching a movie or tv show change to the contents intended as match content is turned on.
I don’t notice at all the difference at all between match frame rate being on or off. Supposedly most good TV’s will convert the frame rate automatically just fine. I don’t think it’s worth it for most people having the laggy scrubbing and annoying flashing going back and forth to 24fps. In my opinion. The dynamic range matching is a must though. 95% of content is SDR so so you wouldn’t have to deal with the flashing that often.
A bit late to the show but thanks for a great video. Very clear and understandable. I did have one issue after using your settings. After turning everything on as specified, I began getting some pretty serious lip sync issues between my 2017 Apple TV4K, my Denon S760H AVR (new Costco model) and my Sony A80J. It was happening on all sources….Amazon, Disney, Apple TV+ and Netflix. I have the Apple TV plugged into the Denon (with my other sources) and then run them all to the TV through HDMI 3 (eARC). I tried the lip sync adjustments on the Denon. Nothing worked. After a few hours, I finally saw a suggestion to turn OFF frame rate matching in the ATV4K settings. Lo and behold, that cured all my lip sync issues on every service thru the ATV. So I will leave it off for now. But any ideas why the lip sync would be an issue with frame rate matching turned on? And by leaving it off, what am I losing, if anything? And would the 2021 model solve this issue? Again thanks for a great video and site. I am a new subscriber.
Hi Im a bit confused with the numbers you have posted here. there is 60Hz or 59.94 Hz but it doesn’t really matter. In theory 59.94Hz is the “traditional” rate so select that. Either will normally work unless your display is not behaving well with 60Hz. but most of all ensure match range and rate are ON then you are fine.
Great tutorial guys! Quick question about HDR10 bit rate. I have apple tv connected to Onkyo receiver, which is contacted to Benq projector ht3550. When I force HDR 60hz on apple tv (match content/rate Off), and play HDR movie on disney+ for example, I see my onkyo statistics showing 4.2.0 30 bits 59hz. However, if I turn the match On in apple tv. The onkyo states showes 4.2.2 24 bits 23.9 hz. In both use cases my benq projector shows BT2020 color space. I am confused why I get 24 bits when I turn Match On and play HDR 10 content? Thank you
Thanks so much. I have one question. When I go to the video settings of my AppleTV 4K I don’t see anything that says enable Dolby Vision. I only see the enable hdr which seems to work fine. Any thoughts on this? Thanks again.
It is difficult to say without knowing more but I would suspect that maybe your tv or projector doesn't support Dolby vision? You could also try resetting your appletvs resolution (check appletv instructions) or power cycle it but other than that more info would be needed.
@@HomeTheatreEngineering My TV does support Dolby Vision but my 2016 Onkyo receiver does not. So, I need to upgrade the receiver which I'm willing to do. Do you feel that Dolby Vision makes a difference? Just want your opinion. Thanks
@@PixelGuy22there may be a setting in your Receiver that you need to change. When I first connected my Apple TV 4K to my Receiver it gave me an error message that it could not do 4K HDR. Only 4K SDR. I had to go into it's Advanced Setup function to access this and switch between the 2 modes. Now my Sony TV get 4K HDR. There is a REDDIT thread talking about something similar, and how to access the menu to change that. www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/cspc53/psa_4k_60hz_hdr_onkyo_receiver_passthrough/ This info should be somewhere in the manual too. I found it in mine, but I didn't notice this obscure setting when I first set it up. @@_Volt_Ron_ Thanks. I contacted Onkyo and they verified no Dolby Vision on my model. Since moved on to a Yamaha receiver and all is well with Dolby Vision.
This doesn’t work for RUclips FYI. Also, by disabling Dolby Vision, the Apple TV trailers/menus/screen savers aren’t in DolbyVision. So there are drawbacks. Basically you are using a work around for the apps that don’t support content matching. /shrug
Ok thanks for your comment. But you are wrong! First of all we didn’t say the menus etc are in DV they aren’t they are REC709 second of all we are not telling you to disable DV.. ! As you can see and we have proved this time and time again by showing the EDID data ... once set up this way you get the correct format for everything. REC709 HDR10 and DV. And yes it does work for RUclips too. We have thoroughly tested that too. The only time it doesn’t work is when metadata is not correct but then that’s not going to work for any system unless forced. If it’s not working on your system something else is wrong.
Ok why dont you guys explain why you are picking 4K SDR 50Hz vs 60Hz?? And thennn if you press Enable Dolby Vision, it will ask you to try it and if you try it it will end up changing the settings from 4K SDR to 4K Dolby Vision. So which is it?
Hi thanks for your comment. First of all 50Hz vs 60Hz. Its not really important these days so either will do but traditionally it is 50Hz in UK and Aus and 60Hz in USA and some other countries. But it really only applies to SDR and again is not important at all. Re Dolby Vision. We cannot demonstrate this on a projected image because Projectors dont do Dolby Vision...BUT if you select the settings as advised your AppleTV (Set to SDR 50/60Hz Match Range and Rate) will ALWAYS deliver the correct content as we demonstrated in Part one with the EDID data displayed. If you haven't seen that check it out.
Been trying to figure out the lip sync issues with hdr and Apple 4k for the longest time. Tossed my Sony receiver, got one of the new Yamaha ones and it still does the same. Only solution so far is to turn res to 4k sdr 60, turn off match dynamic range and turn off match frame rate.
This is interesting. We hear this quite a bit but have been unable to replicate it. Is your appletv connected to your TV or to your AVR? How do you have this configured?
@@HomeTheatreEngineering I even called Apple a while back and they couldn't figure it out, they wanted me to enable Dolby vision and hdr, which was worse.. I have it going from the apple tv to my Yamaha RX-V6A then to the TCL 75Q825.
@@anthonycomposto9044 at this point in time all I can suggest is a full reset on your appletv ? Just check to be sure there are no audio sync settings on your tv and go through those O have seen the issue there too
I can try the reset as a last resort. I have done Google searches and there are tons of forums with Apple tv sound sync issues, seems like an ongoing issue with Apple devices connected to any receiver, Sonos, etc.. I just like their picture quality. It would work well with the hdmi directly to the TV, but the sound quality wouldn't be there without the receiver and good speakers.
@@anthonycomposto9044 As mentioned we have heard about this but never been able to replicate it and we put AppleTV4k in all the rooms we build so this baffles us. Another option to try is to connect it to your TV then use ARC to return the Audio to your receiver and see what happens then...Finally I assume you have tried using the wireless audio sync feature on the appleTV?
We thought about it but that has been relevant across ever tvOS so far on the appletv4k so mentioning any specific tvOS would make people think it’s not relevant to current, which were at the time future, releases .
I tried these settings and have the option to enable 4K, as mentioned to “leave it on SDR 4K” as the default. When I check the Sony TV HDMI input, HDR signal is off. When I set the Apple TV back to 4K HDR, the TV HDMI input signal shows “HDR” making me think my TV is not automatically getting an HDR signal for HDR content? I don’t have a 3rd party tool like you are using to verify if this is correct or not. Any thoughts if HDR signal is being sent correctly from the Apple box using the recommended settings in your video?
CJ Manley there are a few things possible here. Not all content or the menus are HDR so unless you are actually playing an HDR movie it won’t show as HDR that is the point of matching Range so check that out first
Ok If I do this set up and with match content and frame rate Apple 4k>Denon avr2400>BenQ ht3550 all running HDMI 2.1 cables I get lip sync issues bad I have my receiver setting to bypass... Soo annoying so I turn off frame rate match and that seems to fix the problem. Any ideas? Do I need the frame rate match to get the full experience??
The apple TV will output the signal aspect ratio It is sent it’s the display that you need to manage the aspect ratio with. Some people zoom the image of a Scope movie on their TVs some use lenses and or video processors with their projectors. The black bars never “go away” they need to be managed
Great! I’ll do this on my Apple TV! I own a Samsung tv 8 series Led tv! Im going to set up my Apple TV on 4K sdr because I have it on 4K hdr and when I watch a movie .. it looks so dark and barely seeing the character. On the Samsung setting, it’s set up to hdr on my connected 4K devices!
I found leaving Match Dynamic on and Frame Rate Off works with my Samsung AU7000 / 70 inch. The TV is not so bright like my old Samsung NU7090 but well what the heck…I use Dynamic Picture on TV plus all the Apple Settings 4K SDR 60 HZ / Ycbcr / 4:4:4 / Dynamic On / Frame Rate off.
When using the settings outlined in the video I'm getting a pulsing/flickering on dark nearly black scenes on a new Sony AJ08 OLED. When i turn off the Match Content settings it appears to eliminate the issue. Appears this may be an Apple TV 4K issue. Since turning off Match Content will no longer negotiate the format how would you suggest setting format? Have you seen this issue and have any other suggestions for settings?
Like many devices AppleTV gives you options so you can make choices. The options we show here are the ones that deal with configurations as you stated, by detecting the signal and displaying appropriately.
Thank you!!! I have been struggling with this for a awhile. Dolby Vision would not work on its setting with my Sony, Onkyo receiver. You cleared it all up. Onkyo, Sony and Apple had no clue! Thank you so much
First of all if HDR is too dark then something is wrong. The very essence of HDR is it’s high luminance. The spec is for 10,000 nits most TV struggle for 1000+. Movies are mastered in 1000,2000 or 4000 nits. Hence the need for tone mapping. If your HDR is too dark something in your production chain is not right. We don’t “prefer” either freq for SDR but as we are in a PAL based country we tend toward 50hz NTSC would use 60hz but with “matching” turned on it doesn’t matter. It is only relevant for legacy SDR content
This has been answered quite a few times in these comments. But the answer is it doesn’t really matter that much. It was originally a regional thing 50hz for UK and Europe (PAL) and 60hz for USA (NTSC) but if you have selected match range and rate then it will select the correct frame rate anyway. So lacking any other information go 60hz in USA and 50hz in EU etc :-)

I set all settings as mentioned in the video, but sometimes my screen will go black when moving inside the menu of the Apple TV.
mine does this too, did you ever fix this?
Are you guys going to explain how to get Dobly Vision on projectors....Please make a video explaining this process.
We have. Check out "Dolby Vision on everything" video. This explains that we can use the HDFury Diva to access LLDV on any display. There is more to come on this..
@@HomeTheatreEngineering Okay thanks so much & I look forward to that future video.
Help Help. I have an OLED lg CX. I am doing what you say to do however when on DOLBY VISION I am only getting 24 frames WHY. Thank You
Hi guys which projector is used for this video?
Shan Raju from memory the BenQ X12000H
My tv supports hdr, but the picture is dull with washed out colours whenever Itry to play hdr content. I don't have apple tv 4k. I want to know if my tv performance will improve with Apple tv 4k with "Format" set at akSDR and "Match Content" set to OFF. Thanks
👍 Thank you!
I just picked up a Sony x95j which has a few HDMI 2.1 ports. Is there an advantage to getting the gen 2 Apple TV?
Yesterday on white lotus my tv was amazing 🤩
Thank you. Now let see the audio…
Hi HTE,
That was very informative, thanks.
I have a q? that is driving me mad with my new Apple TV+.
The FACT that we can no longer change the AUDIO OUT DEFAULT is bullshit .... what the FUCK were they thinking ???
Hi I appreciate your comment and your frustration but if I understand it this is a sonos issue not an appletv issue, also as a policy we do delete comments with harsh language in them..sorry.
Hi can you create a video about playing Dolby Vision content on a device that does not support it? In my case, I am looking to play DV on Samsung TV is this possible? Thanks in advance
I am using sony 4k projector with apple4k tv although i set it up to your setting an it looked great and after running my projector for a hr i got a flickering green screen no video. It happens multiple times but after using amazon firestick there was no problem. Any suggestions would be appreciated. pple tv does appear to have better picture then the firestick
Hi just got a Sonos arc and sub 3 and Apple TV 4K when I Watch a movie that is in from Apple+ and Atmos i’m not getting it do I need to change any settings on the Apple TV? I spoke to Samsung support they said my TV is compatible for pass through i’m connected to the a Arc so what am I doing wrong any suggestions does Atmos just work I would see in the S2 app any help would be greatly appreciated love the videos
Thanks so very much for this video
You are most welcome. Live Long and Prosper..
I have a problem with HDR and dolby vision, in some scene in the night it get wash out really bad. I try different cable, and when I watch the same scene without HDR or dolby it look normal. What can it be?. And is only in when watching content in the ITunes. So strange. I have a vizio P series 2019.
Still alive? Tvos14 how RUclips app 4K and hdr and or Dolby vision and 4K mode in app?
I have a question do you have to pay for all the movies or can you Subscribe to Apple TV and watch everything without paying?
Thanks a lot for the information. How will I see those details of the movie (HDR, DV etc ) on the screen?
HD Fury Diva in this case. The HD Fury Vertex 2 does the same. Main advantage is allowing lldv Dolby Vision on displays without DV. Including peojectors
By setting the system interface to 50Hz, the screensavers are not smooth. But if I put it on 60Hz, there are apps in Spain (including RUclips) that don't adapt the content and it looks laggy.
Thanks for the help! Confusing how Apple keeps telling us to enable DV!
Bloody brilliant video. Thank you so much. Subscribed and will definitely recommend you to other. 👍
Yes sir! Those settings definitely worked, thank you!
Extremely helpful!!! Thank you very much!!!
Just bought an Apple 4K box so this video helped me get the best settings. Cheers guys :)
So why not enabled Dolby Vision if your system can work with that? You still have match frame rate and content set so won’t it just use that anyways?
Enabling DV or HDR forces that mode. Not all content is just one or just the other. This produces all content exactly as it was intended. SDR is produced as SDR, HDR as HDR and DV as DV. Counterintuitive yes but we have proven it repeatedly. And we test regularly to ensure it hasnt changed
Home Theatre Engineering When setting it do DV or HDR there is still the option to match content. Doesn’t setting to DV or HDR only force the menus to that and then when watching a movie or tv show change to the contents intended as match content is turned on.
Home Theatre Engineering Do you actually notice a quality difference not forcing HDR?
@@JoeyDee86 absolutely. Providing your display is a) fully capable and b) set up properly..
Since the Apple TV 4K changed to 4K SDR 60.59.94 which is better that or 60.60Hz
@@HomeTheatreEngineering Those are the new numbers for 4K SDR which Hz should I use the 60(59.94 Hz or 60Hz
@@texranger1012 Hi please read my reply again I stated 59.94 but it honestly doesn’t matter
Hi my youtube on apple tv always skips tge sound can you tell tge reason why is that please?
Can we have the same video but with the 2019 Nvidia Shield? A lot more people use the Shield than the Apple for their projectors... thank guys!
Thank you
Thank you, so for my JVC RS49 that doesn’t have the HDR is it better switch off the match content option ?
Did Apple update their UI to take advantage of HDR yet?
There is a REDDIT thread talking about something similar, and how to access the menu to change that. www.reddit.com/r/hometheater/comments/cspc53/psa_4k_60hz_hdr_onkyo_receiver_passthrough/
This info should be somewhere in the manual too. I found it in mine, but I didn't notice this obscure setting when I first set it up. Or try contacting the tech support to see if there is a way to change that to get Dolby Vision pass-thru your receiver to see on your TV.
@@_Volt_Ron_ Thanks. I contacted Onkyo and they verified no Dolby Vision on my model. Since moved on to a Yamaha receiver and all is well with Dolby Vision.
Great picture but getting some audio delay from my Samsung sound bar ..just purchased Rambo last blood ..audio delay is bad ..any ideas ?
Thank you so much, tech illiterate lol so need all the help!!
Anything similar for audio?
Great video! What do you suggest for the TV input settings for the input you have apple tv on?
OK, I found the button that says "Don't push this Button" and I quickly pushed that button!
Thanks guys, great explanation.
Thanks for the video. Suggestion: mention the tvOS version that’s on the AppleTV that’s used for this video.
Me same here , my Apple TV is connected with Honepod
Hello, can you change the apple tv to a 2.4:1 aspect radio to delete the black bars from the sides?? or it is only 16:9????
The apple TV will output the signal aspect ratio It is sent it’s the display that you need to manage the aspect ratio with. Some people zoom the image of a Scope movie on their TVs some use lenses and or video processors with their projectors. The black bars never “go away” they need to be managed
Just wanna say thank you for the information
The TV is not so bright like my old Samsung NU7090 but well what the heck…I use Dynamic Picture on TV plus all the Apple Settings 4K SDR 60 HZ / Ycbcr / 4:4:4 / Dynamic On / Frame Rate off.
hi,can u do this for latest gen?
When using the settings outlined in the video I'm getting a pulsing/flickering on dark nearly black scenes on a new Sony AJ08 OLED. When i turn off the Match Content settings it appears to eliminate the issue. Appears this may be an Apple TV 4K issue. Since turning off Match Content will no longer negotiate the format how would you suggest setting format? Have you seen this issue and have any other suggestions for settings?
We haven’t seen this . I would suggest exploring your settings on the TV
Why do I need to go to a class to use Apple TV? Why can't Apple TV check the best HDR, resolution etc...
Thank you so much
I find HDR content to dark for my tastes so I don’t allow it. You seem to prefer 4K SDR @ 50 instead of @60 . . . why ?
First of all if HDR is too dark then something is wrong. The very essence of HDR is it’s high luminance. The spec is for 10,000 nits most TV struggle for 1000+. Movies are mastered in 1000,2000 or 4000 nits. Hence the need for tone mapping. If your HDR is too dark something in your production chain is not right. We don’t “prefer” either freq for SDR but as we are in a PAL based country we tend toward 50hz NTSC would use 60hz but with “matching” turned on it doesn’t matter. It is only relevant for legacy SDR content
Very informative. Choosing the right settings can be confusing, but you make it clear what is the way to go. Thanks.
Should I do 24, 50, or 60hz? Which of these options is considered optimal with your suggested setup?
This has been answered quite a few times in these comments. But the answer is it doesn’t really matter that much. It was originally a regional thing 50hz for UK and Europe (PAL) and 60hz for USA (NTSC) but if you have selected match range and rate then it will select the correct frame rate anyway. So lacking any other information go 60hz in USA and 50hz in EU etc :-)
Thank‘s very helpful
