    How about a brief video explaining the difference between a true driving iron vs. a traditional 2/3 iron? Many players I see don't understand just how much of an actual difference there is between the two.

    As ever great Vid Guys. I think I may get a driving Iron so that it can keep my 3 Wood company in the "Never to be Used EVER"! section of my golf bag.
    Congratulations to Frankie Molinari for his tremendous win at The Open yesterday, it proved yet again that keeping the Ball in play off the tee and sinking Par and Birdy putts at the right time is the best strategy in playing this Beloved game of ours! Commiserations to Tiger, I really thought he was going to get another Major under his Belt.

    Excellent content as always guys, looking forward to more Driving Iron related videos.
    Another interesting topic that i've heard being thrown around a lot that would make for some great tests would be Modern Driving Irons VS Regular game improvement long irons. I'm hearing lots of people online saying "Why would I spend $200 for a driving iron when I can just get a long iron from a game improvement set like an AP1 or even something like an old Ping i3 or even an Eye 2!" I think it could make a cool test. :)

    I just put an old Adams DHy in the bag as a 2 driving iron. When I lose confidence in my driver it's fantastic to have as an option off the tee. It's a great fallback to hit the fairway and make sure the second shot is playable without sacrificing too much distance.

    Great video guys as always , I myself go driver , 3 wood , Miura ICL 2 iron driving iron and irons wedges , I do swap out a 18 degree hybrid or 5 wood for different courses , but I find accuracy is diminished with hybrid and 5 wood , 2 3 and 4 irons straight A’s a pin and shot shaping so much easier

    I’ve been using a Mizuno HiFli 2 iron affixed to a Project X 6.0 for about 3 years and absolutely love the options it gives me: great driving characteristics off the tee and the ability to fire at greens on Par 5’s & long Par 4’s. I know this was shit over a year ago, but now am looking to move into a Mizuno MP 20 HMB 2i. Hope y’all include Mizuno in your upcoming series for 2019/2020. Thanks Gents.

    Very good info on gapping towards the long end of the bag ,I can't hit rescue clubs ,they just don't work so after my 4 iron I have just made up a 7 wood with 21 head and voodoo x shaft playing it at 42 inches ,hits great on the range yesterday 230 carry .stupid easy to hit club for me I don't think I,m good enough for driving iron ,so I can take 4 wood out the bag sometimes or 3 wood now ,the 7 fits perfectly between either of them ,I know you get free handbag and make up kit with a 7 wood ( i've heard all the jokes ) but it really does work so I don't mind.Great video as always guys .

I'm not the greatest, and am having trouble getting it high enough to have a chance at holding a green. I'm only hitting it 200-210. Have the 4 set to 21.5 to fit a gap.

    I use a 23 degree Wilson driving iron for my 4 iron and a TM 3 hybrid and they blend so well in my bag between the 3 fairway and the 5 iron. The driving iron gives me flight options between the hybrid and 5 iron. On a different topic I changed to graphite in my irons Project X LZ 6.0 90 grm and am wondering about the same graphite in my wedges. There is so many different views on this topic maybe you could do something on that one day. I'm so glad I found your channel great information.

I've tried about 3 100g graphite shafts in my 2 iron but have gone back to the kbs tour in it as it keeps the spin down better than all the graphite's I tried.

    Hey guys... Excellent video.
    Any chance you could do a video like this one (shaft-centric) with Matt but with wedges?... It could be interesting to present the various launch and spin characteristics from stock wedge shafts vs aftermarket wedge shafts; possibly even throwing in what iron shafts in wedges can do. Seeing the numbers from full and partial shots would be great but I imagine the video could get a bit long. (I've recently heard that Iron shafts can produce some different feels because of their bend profiles... especially on partial shots.)
    I'd love to try to do the investigating myself but I don't have the resources available like you guys clearly do.
    Either way, I've really been enjoying all of the content since I started watching. I probably subscribed after watching the first video RUclips suggested for me.
    Great stuff! Keep it up...

    The post Open video when EVERYONE was hitting this type of loft off the tee. GAPR! I also have an observation that Matt Kuchar was hitting KSH shafts in all his irons - not sure about the driving iron as he didn't get enough camera time - but will you bring in these KBS TGI Graphite shafts? Are the Accra shafts equivalent? If you gap your hot irons 15 yards versus the 10-12 standard, it gives you the opportunity to have specialty clubs on both ends - an idea I like.

    Hey guys I know this is an old vid. But why don't many people use steel shafts in driving irons? I ask because I use x100 in my irons through 3 iron. I was thinking of getting a udi built to with a steel shaft because I want it to feel like an exact extension of the set at 39.50 in instead of 40.

    If you do more and can compare different driving iron heads that would be fun including the srixon (new u85 about to be released). Recently tried the u65 and found it to be more reliable and same distance as my former 5 wood and even one of my hybrids - I am a mid handicapper so speaks to what matt and you discussed re is there a role for someone like me - clearly trying different ones and shafts will be key. Have not tried the callaway but as I game srixon irons was inclined to stat with that as shafts and feel very similar. Who know what the gapr will offer but look forward to tour assessments.

    In the past 6 months I’ve added roughly 7-8 MPH of club speed across the board. I’ve gotten all my clubs and shafts straightened back out as far as appropriate weight and flex except for the 3 wood and hybrid/2iron. The increased speed has leaded to a lot of pulls and hooks with the 3 wood and huge gap between it and my 3 iron. My old hybrid is completely useless.

  • @ww-oo7ic

    I carry one of these for the exact scenario you described with your friend Veto. when you are struggling and just need to find a fairway the driving iron is money. Interesting comment by Matt at the end though associating handicap to swing speed. Would be interesting to see a fitting with a mid handicapper with speed. as one myself I know many GI clubs don't fit because they go too high and spin too much and I don't need that help but the more "players" irons at times cause distance loss due to striking inconsistencies. I would be curious to see how that fitting would go. Maybe bring Matt's buddy back, the lefty teaching pro from the Ping driver fitting. Great content as always!

    Hi Ian This driving iron may be adjustable but so too some of the hybrids on the market, eg Mizuno. Would like to see a direct comparison driving iron Vs hybrids. Personally use hybrids to replace the 4 and 3 irons. Much easier to hit which then progresses very well into the 4 wood. Gapping is perfect. But would like to hear the pros and cons of all of them. Utility Irons are now coming in lofts as high as 30* (X-Forged UT) and Srixon has blended sets with their UT 6 iron at 29*. However, all reviews of utility irons are for lower lofted clubs being used as driving irons. It will be great to see a review of 4, 5, 6 utility irons and blending them with regular irons. Does one match the shafts in these higher lofts with the shafts in the regular irons? TXG can be the first to do such a review and and answer questions like the one just stated. Cheers!

    Have you guys tried the graphite iron shafts in the standard long iron? I saw the Mitsubishi MMT might be one of those interesting combos. This is probably the biggest issue in my bag currently. I had some issues with my Adam's tight lies 2. But the stock shaft weight is lighter then my 3 wood shaft. Tempo is all off with it. I loved its versatility. Roll and bulge though just felt like it was hurting me. I have a Tour Edge Exotics CBX ironwood in the same loft. Hzrdus Black 85g. Weight feels good. But very hard to load and maybe needs a little more torque. My first hybrid was a Nike ProCombo Utility iron. Still have it. Just not great on versatility of lie. So I've always liked the straighter faced long utility clubs

    About to put an Aldila NVS Hybrid 105x shaft into an i500 3 iron head for a utility club/driving iron. The trim code for the shaft says to tip trim none for a 2 and 3 hybrid, 1/2” for a 4 hybrid and 1” for a 5 hybrid. I have this exact shaft in my actual 2 hybrid at 40.5” and love it. I followed the trim code and did not tip trim it. So, my question is how do I tip trim the shaft for this new utility/driving iron if I want it to play the same profile and I am building it at 39.75”? Tip trim none or 1/2”?

    I know this is an outdated topic, but I was RE-watching it hoping to find an answer...if I want to add a KBS Proto shaft to my 21* x forged, how would I cut it down appropriately? Butt or tip? A bit of both? Thanks!

    Excuse me, noob Q, I don't know what i don't know,
    Could i possibly use the ventus black in my long irons and what spec in particular?
    I'm currently swinging my mid irons around the low 90s mph with a SF of ~3.4

    Great video as usual guys. Is it fair to say that most driving iron shafts would be classified as low spin/launch profile? Is a different profile not suited to an iron like these?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад +1

      You can definitely find higher launch/spin profile shafts for driving irons, all the ones we tested in this video are actually just hybrid shafts. Just depends on what works for your individual swing.

    Hi Gents
    I swing a driver from 99 - 102 mph........ how much speed do you recommend someone needs to have before you start looking at 2 irons ? I'm like Matt, scared to try but also hate my hybrid. My 4 iron will carry 205 y
    PS absolutely look forward to every video you guys do, outstanding to the both of you, well done.

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Worth a try at your speed for sure, depending on your swing conditions you may get a nice flight from a driving iron in the correct loft. If you're not a fan of your hybrid, this is a really nice alternative.

    What loft do you recommend for a driving iron?

  • @anemicroyalty8764

    I’m a relative beginner (never had a lesson, but have hit on ranges about 30 times over ten years, but a third of that has been recently).
    I just found out my used Ping 12 degree G15 driver is a stiff shaft (too stiff for me) . Is this why I’m able to hit a 9 degree 1997 Cobra deep face & a 9.5 975D driver farther with good hits than the G15? I can hit 220 (counting rollout) drives with the steel shafted cobra and as far as that with the Titleist but struggle to reach 200 with the Ping.
    And aren’t beginners supposed to also benefit from more loft in drivers as well over lower lofts?
    My max ball speed (keep in mind I haven’t had a lesson) now is about 130-132. How far should I hit a good driver with that? And will I keep getting higher speeds if I keep hitting balls?

    Why do we need graphite in this iron? I have a full set AP3 and ordered my I3 with 2 degree stronger loft and 1/2" longer so it's more like a I2. This head is hollow(I think) so is this as easy as a specific "driving iron"? I have a driver speed at 100mph so I'm not fast. I have some trubbel on the turf to get it flying on the it's no problem. Should I get a Driving Iron with a graphite shaft instead...? Does it get longer or?

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Don't necessarily need graphite, the model we were testing was built to 40.5" playing length. At that length a lot of players will find a steel shaft feels very heavy, so graphite is often a good choice. You'll see a lot of tour players going with graphite in their driving irons as well. You may find that a driving iron model offers a higher flight and is easier to hit off the turf.

    Hi Guys, have the Tensei Pro White in my P790. Tipped it half an inch, but feel like the face hangs open when i swing it and I'm getting a weak fade as my ballflight. Would tipping it another half inch help the face deflect less? Thanks for the awesome video by the way

      Depends on how it's working for you Bruno, lighter weight steel shafts can work in a driving iron but generally you'll see most people (including tour pros) using graphite in that club.

    Hey Guys... Great job! Any advice for Cobra king utility iron shaft? i swing around 92-95mph (trackman) with it going 200-210 . I have the rogue 85 stiff hybrid shaft that seems very loose and balls go right. I also have kbs c taper lite in stiff that seems a bit to heavy with balls going relatively low. any suggestions?? thanks!

    Ian, why is that I (as a natural fader of the ball) and many other hook a hybrid? Why haven't manufactures fixed this issue? I, personally use this flight to my advance depending on hole shape etc but for a natural drawer of the ball this club could be a nightmare. I always thought it was down to the offset.

      Not sure about other channels Dominic, but we don't have them in the shop at the moment to test. Our plan for the future is to get more product in just for testing purposes, but for now we generally only test product that is part of the demo matrix in the studio.

      I believe that adjusting the loft up or down on the ping will make it flatter. I think i read somewhere that it's most upright setting is at standard. Which is opposite to what most other manufacturers are

    • @alexanderyu565
      @alexanderyu565 6 лет назад

      Scott Timmins Yea, I read that on GolfWRX and was surprised to hear it. I am not sure what the most toe down setting is. So many conflicting opinions on it.

    • @scotty_teee4226
      @scotty_teee4226 6 лет назад

      Alexander Yu i would imagine it would be at the lowest or highest loft setting, if the standard loft is the most upright. Sounds like it would work the opposite to the taylormade loft sleeve, for example

  • @gavinleonard6430
    @gavinleonard6430 6 лет назад

    What loft do you think is the most common for bringing a 4 iron to 3 wood , I have a 19° hybrid that I carry anything from 225 to 240 range and my 3 wood isn't really much different maybe a few extra yards , do you think a 21° hybrid or driving iron would be more suitable

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      Sounds like it Gavin, as you say not much point in having your 3 wood and hybrid go similar distances.

    • @gavinleonard6430
      @gavinleonard6430 6 лет назад

      TXG Tour Experience Golf is that common? , I was guna try a lower spinning 3 wood to create a bigger gap

    • @clubchampionmedia
      @clubchampionmedia  6 лет назад

      It's very common, two scenarios that can make that happen, either: 1) the 3 wood is spinning too much and reducing total distance, or 2) the 3 wood isn't launching high enough to generate adequate carry. You'd need to identify which is the cause of your distance loss on a launch monitor.
