there are 1,000 other people making club reviews and its the same thing over and over again. You guys at it to another level!! adding in your vast knowledge on fitting with reviewing clubs is really refreshing. Keep up the great work!
👍👍👍👍 thanks Ryan!
How about a brief video explaining the difference between a true driving iron vs. a traditional 2/3 iron? Many players I see don't understand just how much of an actual difference there is between the two.
Recently found this channel and love it! Great stuff guys!
Always an informative and interesting watch!!!
Love to see a head to head with the new driving irons on the market to see which would be the best for mid to high handicappers. Love the videos guys keep them going
Great stuff! Can’t wait for the video on the mp 18 mb and sc!!
Would love to see another live video for a driving iron fitting for Matt! Been great to see the immediate change of ball flight for each head & shaft combination on those videos!
Really looking forward to more videos on this part of the bag, I'm completely at sea at the moment as to which club to carry (I chucked my 5 wood because it goes too high but I never hit the hybrid because I hit too many snap hooks). Keep the great content coming...
I just picked up the DI 95 for my 2 iron T-MB. Huge upgrade over the stock Project X 6.5. Thanks for putting these products in the spotlight for us.
Great video again guys. Mat hits it so good.
Had these type of Callaway irons for a while now and love them. Started with steel shafts in the x prototype and apex ut and now in graphite design tour ad 95 di in the x forged ut. 🚀🚀
Great vid i play a srixon zu65 18° as my driving iron i just love it and it’s like a little extra driver in the bag also good relatively easy to hit from the turf
for a 2 iron at least
My favorite new channel! Great content. Binge watched all your videos!!!
👍👍👍
looking forward to seeing the PING i500 in this type of discussion. Keep up the good work!
Great vid guys. I am definitely one of the player that you speak about in terms of hooking hybrids. I will probably be picking up a couple of driving irons soon.
As ever great Vid Guys. I think I may get a driving Iron so that it can keep my 3 Wood company in the "Never to be Used EVER"! section of my golf bag.
Congratulations to Frankie Molinari for his tremendous win at The Open yesterday, it proved yet again that keeping the Ball in play off the tee and sinking Par and Birdy putts at the right time is the best strategy in playing this Beloved game of ours! Commiserations to Tiger, I really thought he was going to get another Major under his Belt.
Excellent content as always guys, looking forward to more Driving Iron related videos.
Another interesting topic that i've heard being thrown around a lot that would make for some great tests would be Modern Driving Irons VS Regular game improvement long irons. I'm hearing lots of people online saying "Why would I spend $200 for a driving iron when I can just get a long iron from a game improvement set like an AP1 or even something like an old Ping i3 or even an Eye 2!" I think it could make a cool test. :)
I just put an old Adams DHy in the bag as a 2 driving iron. When I lose confidence in my driver it's fantastic to have as an option off the tee. It's a great fallback to hit the fairway and make sure the second shot is playable without sacrificing too much distance.
Great video guys as always , I myself go driver , 3 wood , Miura ICL 2 iron driving iron and irons wedges , I do swap out a 18 degree hybrid or 5 wood for different courses , but I find accuracy is diminished with hybrid and 5 wood , 2 3 and 4 irons straight A’s a pin and shot shaping so much easier
Had an apex UT but cracked the face. Awesome club the Callaway is a perfect balance between friendly but not too big. Great for wind and fairway finding.
I love your videos guys!
I’ve been using a Mizuno HiFli 2 iron affixed to a Project X 6.0 for about 3 years and absolutely love the options it gives me: great driving characteristics off the tee and the ability to fire at greens on Par 5’s & long Par 4’s. I know this was shit over a year ago, but now am looking to move into a Mizuno MP 20 HMB 2i. Hope y’all include Mizuno in your upcoming series for 2019/2020. Thanks Gents.
Very good info on gapping towards the long end of the bag ,I can't hit rescue clubs ,they just don't work so after my 4 iron I have just made up a 7 wood with 21 head and voodoo x shaft playing it at 42 inches ,hits great on the range yesterday 230 carry .stupid easy to hit club for me I don't think I,m good enough for driving iron ,so I can take 4 wood out the bag sometimes or 3 wood now ,the 7 fits perfectly between either of them ,I know you get free handbag and make up kit with a 7 wood ( i've heard all the jokes ) but it really does work so I don't mind.Great video as always guys .
Love the video! Have a driving iron myself that just has the wrong shaft. May keep it in the bag if I can find the correct shaft. Or it may not even be needed.
After trying my grandfather's old 2 iron (( was pretty fun lol I could actually hit it )). I think I'll go with a 3 wood - 2 iron - 4-5 hybrid setup then irons. But yea nice vid as always gents.
Great video as always. As a more avarage swing speed player it would be interesting to see a comparison between a 5 iron and the equivalent lofted driving iron.
Currently gaming a Cobra Black Utility, tested it in multiple shifts and I must say, the Recoil SmacWrap ES is an absolute MONSTER. Love that combo, 225-230 easy and if I step on it I can get close to 240, set at 23.5
I just got one of those and am looking for a shaft for it currently. Wasnt sure if I should be looking for a hybrid shaft or iron shaft. I'm not the greatest, and am having trouble getting it high enough to have a chance at holding a green. I'm only hitting it 200-210. Have the 4 set to 21.5 to fit a gap.
I use a 23 degree Wilson driving iron for my 4 iron and a TM 3 hybrid and they blend so well in my bag between the 3 fairway and the 5 iron. The driving iron gives me flight options between the hybrid and 5 iron. On a different topic I changed to graphite in my irons Project X LZ 6.0 90 grm and am wondering about the same graphite in my wedges. There is so many different views on this topic maybe you could do something on that one day. I'm so glad I found your channel great information.
Great video. Currently playing two 3 woods. One for driving off the tee (m2), and one with a much more flexible shaft that offers a loftier ball flight (burner 2.0) but also allows me to shape it very well without swinging out of my shoes. Maybe I’ll try a driving iron now
Great video! good questions by Matt, I'm about a 5 handicap but I don't have the fastest swing speed so I like the idea of a driving iron to potentially replace an old trusty hybrid but I've never been fit to one properly in a graphite premium shaft. I'm looking forward to trying one out next time I come to visit you guys!
Once again great content guys!!! Just got the MMC fli hi 2 iron with the c taper 130x, the shaft I have in my iron set and I am thinking it doesn’t quite fit the driving iron. Definitely wanna swap it out with one of these shafts. Play the Tensei pro Orange in my woods and think maybe the Tensei white would be a good fit for it!!!
I have the Callaway Apex 18 degree UT with the graphite design AD 85 for the same reason so I can square up the face on impact, that is my 250 club for use on tight fairways
keep them coming best information for me as i hook the s$#t out of hybrids and need something to hit off the tee on long par 3s and for position on some par 4s
The KBS hybrid proto if tipped properly is as good as anything out there. Super stable, great feel.
Thanks for filming this the same day I asked for it on Instagram. Awesome as always
I agree with person below, gotta have a driving iron GAPR comparison!! (TXG chant starts in the background)
I was looking at one as a 4 iron replacement for a bit more launch, something around 24deg, cobra do an adjustable ut now.
Hoping to see a P790 UDI fitting soon. Fitting with different shafts to see if high launch shaft would make this a fairway club v. low launch shaft if it is a true low spinning driving iron
Can you guys do an updated version of the best shafts currently on the market for utility/driving irons. Steel shafts, graphite, graphite/steel combos. I'd love to hear your thoughts on how the games view on driving irons has evolved since then.
Wow.. love this.
I tried p790 with stock hzrdus but no luck. too light for me. I really want to test out the accra shaft.
Every time I watch Matt's club video, I really want to get fitted by you. Really.
my U500 is way too light with stock shaft. reshafting with my x100 iron shafts. hopefully that gives it enough so i can feel the head
Would be really interested to see you compare the Accra #'s to a couple of steel shafts. Maybe an x7 to be consistent with Matt's set and throw in a few more just to see. I've tried about 3 100g graphite shafts in my 2 iron but have gone back to the kbs tour in it as it keeps the spin down better than all the graphite's I tried.
Great video guys, such great insight. As a player who plays HZRDUS Smoke in their driving iron, how does the Tour AD compare in feel?
This and demolition ranch are my only MUST watch RUclips uploads. Maybe Hoonigan too. I’m diverse 😂
😆👍👍
I’m a doctor...ish 🤣
TXG Tour Experience Golf I think saying I watch Hoonigan might give away that I’m not actually an old man despite what my name makes people believe 😂 26 with the name of an old German
Hi Mikey, great videos!
Was wondering about the specifications of Matt’s 19 degree uti, inc. how long is the shaft and what is the swing weight? Also, how many inches did you tip trim the shaft? It is difficult for me to find any recommendations on Accra’s website.
Keep up the great work!
Thanks!
Fred
👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻
Still hoping for the mid range balls comparison 😉😄
Hey guys... Excellent video.
Any chance you could do a video like this one (shaft-centric) with Matt but with wedges?... It could be interesting to present the various launch and spin characteristics from stock wedge shafts vs aftermarket wedge shafts; possibly even throwing in what iron shafts in wedges can do. Seeing the numbers from full and partial shots would be great but I imagine the video could get a bit long. (I've recently heard that Iron shafts can produce some different feels because of their bend profiles... especially on partial shots.)
I'd love to try to do the investigating myself but I don't have the resources available like you guys clearly do.
Either way, I've really been enjoying all of the content since I started watching. I probably subscribed after watching the first video RUclips suggested for me.
Great stuff! Keep it up...
The post Open video when EVERYONE was hitting this type of loft off the tee. GAPR! I also have an observation that Matt Kuchar was hitting KSH shafts in all his irons - not sure about the driving iron as he didn't get enough camera time - but will you bring in these KBS TGI Graphite shafts? Are the Accra shafts equivalent? If you gap your hot irons 15 yards versus the 10-12 standard, it gives you the opportunity to have specialty clubs on both ends - an idea I like.
Hey guys I know this is an old vid. But why don't many people use steel shafts in driving irons? I ask because I use x100 in my irons through 3 iron. I was thinking of getting a udi built to with a steel shaft because I want it to feel like an exact extension of the set at 39.50 in instead of 40.
If you do more and can compare different driving iron heads that would be fun including the srixon (new u85 about to be released). Recently tried the u65 and found it to be more reliable and same distance as my former 5 wood and even one of my hybrids - I am a mid handicapper so speaks to what matt and you discussed re is there a role for someone like me - clearly trying different ones and shafts will be key. Have not tried the callaway but as I game srixon irons was inclined to stat with that as shafts and feel very similar. Who know what the gapr will offer but look forward to tour assessments.
Speed is paramount for driving irons / shaft selection.
I'd like to see p790 Miz flihi vs the Callaway... Interested to see if a different shaft would be better for Matt in one of those heads
In the past 6 months I’ve added roughly 7-8 MPH of club speed across the board. I’ve gotten all my clubs and shafts straightened back out as far as appropriate weight and flex except for the 3 wood and hybrid/2iron. The increased speed has leaded to a lot of pulls and hooks with the 3 wood and huge gap between it and my 3 iron. My old hybrid is completely useless.
I carry one of these for the exact scenario you described with your friend Veto. when you are struggling and just need to find a fairway the driving iron is money. Interesting comment by Matt at the end though associating handicap to swing speed. Would be interesting to see a fitting with a mid handicapper with speed. as one myself I know many GI clubs don't fit because they go too high and spin too much and I don't need that help but the more "players" irons at times cause distance loss due to striking inconsistencies. I would be curious to see how that fitting would go. Maybe bring Matt's buddy back, the lefty teaching pro from the Ping driver fitting. Great content as always!
Our next video is actually with a mid handicapper with a lot of speed 😆😆 - how's that for service!
WOW! Now that's great service. It was awesome to see Sam putting in work. Ask and you shall receive!
Would be interesting to see comparisons with metal shaft to visualize the differences. I use a Mizuno MP18MMC 2 iron with a Modus 120x both off the tee and turf. Great for the shorter, tighter par 4s. I hit it about 225-230 yards and my driver speed is 100-105.
Really good video. I play off 2 and I'm hopeless with a utility, much prefer an iron. However I struggle to get beyond 200 yards with 2, 3, 4 iron all going 200. Just bought hogan UiHi 18 degree. Good hit 220, poor hit 170. 😭
Any suggestions?
Nice video again! Did you guys use the tensei pro white in x flex or the exclusive tour material tx version?
Tensei Pro White Hybrid 100X
Hi Ian This driving iron may be adjustable but so too some of the hybrids on the market, eg Mizuno. Would like to see a direct comparison driving iron Vs hybrids. Personally use hybrids to replace the 4 and 3 irons. Much easier to hit which then progresses very well into the 4 wood. Gapping is perfect. But would like to hear the pros and cons of all of them. Certainly get a lot of height and stopping power from the hybrids. The ball seems to parachute onto the greens 👍 Keep up the great work, you guys rock....
We'll do driving iron vs. hybrid comparison for sure Alberto!
Same for me... as soon as I hit a few with the Apex UT, I said, “I gotta have one.”
The face is so fast. I borderline hit it too far and went back to srixon u85
Would be good to compare the so called utility irons with some of the 'hot' long irons such as the Ping i500 and TM 790 3 irons. Are the so called utility irons longer and straighter or is it better to take some length off to gain better dispersion. Shaft piece interesting but a bit personal.
Another good video
What grip is it that’s on your fitting shafts and is there a reason for that grip
Like a couple of the replies thinking 🤔 5 Wood or driving iron maybe both.
Just wondering which one would be best out of the rough
Pure grips
Just received MP-20 HMB 2 iron.....my 2020 challenge to get “The Deuce” to work. Will require some gym time 💪🏼
How’s the 2 iron going ? What shaft do you have in it ?
I bought one as well with the KBS 90 in it. Played 2 rounds and sold it. Lol. Waiting on the Srixon ZU85 to be delivered on Friday, hoping for more forgiveness. I will say the Hmb when struck well boy does it go.. but like u said will take some work. Good luck.
Coach Gene yeah just got my mp-20 a few weeks ago need some time with it! Good luck with your srixon
Would it be advisable to use a hybrid shaft to a driving iron head? I'm looking at tour ad hy-85s to be used for a p790 udi head.
Question I have a 3 TM B driving iron gold AMT 300 steel. If I replace with high to mid lauch 80-85 gram graphic shaft. Will that help gets ball higher than steel shaft. What is big difference between the two. Thanks
EXACTLY what I was looking for! I play of 1 and carry a Titleist 718 t-mb 2 iron with a PX 6.0 shaft but probably need to change the shaft to graphite. What difference is there between graphite and steel shaft?
Less weight would be the biggest difference
Perfect timing for this kind of video boys! I'm looking for a driving iron or a 5 wood, thinking of getting both and using one at a time depending on what kind of course/weather/mood I'm in. How does that sound?
Great content as always guys, all the best :)
Not a bad plan Simon!
I’m gonna end up doing then same thing. Great minds think alike!
Expensive, and fun! Do it!
Utility Irons are now coming in lofts as high as 30* (X-Forged UT) and Srixon has blended sets with their UT 6 iron at 29*. However, all reviews of utility irons are for lower lofted clubs being used as driving irons. It will be great to see a review of 4, 5, 6 utility irons and blending them with regular irons. Does one match the shafts in these higher lofts with the shafts in the regular irons? TXG can be the first to do such a review and and answer questions like the one just stated. Cheers!
Have you guys tried the graphite iron shafts in the standard long iron? I saw the Mitsubishi MMT might be one of those interesting combos. This is probably the biggest issue in my bag currently. I had some issues with my Adam's tight lies 2. But the stock shaft weight is lighter then my 3 wood shaft. Tempo is all off with it. I loved its versatility. Roll and bulge though just felt like it was hurting me. I have a Tour Edge Exotics CBX ironwood in the same loft. Hzrdus Black 85g. Weight feels good. But very hard to load and maybe needs a little more torque. My first hybrid was a Nike ProCombo Utility iron. Still have it. Just not great on versatility of lie. So I've always liked the straighter faced long utility clubs
Great Video guys ! I was considering getting fitted for a 5 wood head and simply deloft it to a 4 wood just because I like the bigger head and then getting a 3 driving iron. Do you think thats a good way of building the top end of my bag ?
Yup that could work, just make sure you demo both on a launch monitor to assess the distance and launch conditions of both.
Any testing with a steel shaft in the driving irons? I can’t decide if graphite or steel is the way to go. Benefits and cons of each different kinds of shafts in the heads would be really interesting.
Hi Matt, great videos. How long is the shaft in your 19 degree uti? Did you tip or butt trim the shaft or maybe both? Thanks!
I believe it's 40", would assume Mikey did a combination of butt/tip trimming
I was curious what something like a M4 4 iron a degree or two strong would play like, think that would make it 17/18 degrees - cheaper alternative possibly? Think Tensei Blue, Atmos Red and Recoil 460 are available but not sure how any of those play!
I've got a tour ad di hybrid shaft with titleist adapter. Can I remove the adapter and fit this to my callaway tcb 4 iron ?
Question: can a Tensai Blue be fitted into the MP20-HMB head? Gather shaft diameter is different to typical steel shaft @ 0.33?
About to put an Aldila NVS Hybrid 105x shaft into an i500 3 iron head for a utility club/driving iron. The trim code for the shaft says to tip trim none for a 2 and 3 hybrid, 1/2” for a 4 hybrid and 1” for a 5 hybrid. I have this exact shaft in my actual 2 hybrid at 40.5” and love it. I followed the trim code and did not tip trim it. So, my question is how do I tip trim the shaft for this new utility/driving iron if I want it to play the same profile and I am building it at 39.75”? Tip trim none or 1/2”?
I know this is an outdated topic, but I was RE-watching it hoping to find an answer...if I want to add a KBS Proto shaft to my 21* x forged, how would I cut it down appropriately? Butt or tip? A bit of both? Thanks!
Excuse me, noob Q, I don't know what i don't know,
Could i possibly use the ventus black in my long irons and what spec in particular?
I'm currently swinging my mid irons around the low 90s mph with a SF of ~3.4
Great video as usual guys. Is it fair to say that most driving iron shafts would be classified as low spin/launch profile? Is a different profile not suited to an iron like these?
You can definitely find higher launch/spin profile shafts for driving irons, all the ones we tested in this video are actually just hybrid shafts. Just depends on what works for your individual swing.
how does the shaft you got in the driving iron compare to your shaft in the driver?
Hi Gents
I swing a driver from 99 - 102 mph........ how much speed do you recommend someone needs to have before you start looking at 2 irons ? I'm like Matt, scared to try but also hate my hybrid. My 4 iron will carry 205 y
PS absolutely look forward to every video you guys do, outstanding to the both of you, well done.
Worth a try at your speed for sure, depending on your swing conditions you may get a nice flight from a driving iron in the correct loft. If you're not a fan of your hybrid, this is a really nice alternative.
What loft do you recommend for a driving iron?
I’m a relative beginner (never had a lesson, but have hit on ranges about 30 times over ten years, but a third of that has been recently).
I just found out my used Ping 12 degree G15 driver is a stiff shaft (too stiff for me) . Is this why I’m able to hit a 9 degree 1997 Cobra deep face & a 9.5 975D driver farther with good hits than the G15? I can hit 220 (counting rollout) drives with the steel shafted cobra and as far as that with the Titleist but struggle to reach 200 with the Ping.
And aren’t beginners supposed to also benefit from more loft in drivers as well over lower lofts?
My max ball speed (keep in mind I haven’t had a lesson) now is about 130-132. How far should I hit a good driver with that? And will I keep getting higher speeds if I keep hitting balls?
Why not try the AD DI in a 95g or 85g variety to compare with the lighter Accra?
Is graphite designs di 105x better for and iron than the AD 95X iron shaft.
What about the mmt utility shaft?
What length of shafts were you using in the driving Iron
Why do we need graphite in this iron? I have a full set AP3 and ordered my I3 with 2 degree stronger loft and 1/2" longer so it's more like a I2. This head is hollow(I think) so is this as easy as a specific "driving iron"? I have a driver speed at 100mph so I'm not fast. I have some trubbel on the turf to get it flying on the it's no problem. Should I get a Driving Iron with a graphite shaft instead...? Does it get longer or?
Don't necessarily need graphite, the model we were testing was built to 40.5" playing length. At that length a lot of players will find a steel shaft feels very heavy, so graphite is often a good choice. You'll see a lot of tour players going with graphite in their driving irons as well. You may find that a driving iron model offers a higher flight and is easier to hit off the turf.
Long live Matty.
Hi Guys, have the Tensei Pro White in my P790. Tipped it half an inch, but feel like the face hangs open when i swing it and I'm getting a weak fade as my ballflight. Would tipping it another half inch help the face deflect less? Thanks for the awesome video by the way
Depends on your delivery, speed, etc. Do you generally hit a draw with other clubs?
Whats a standard lenght for a 2 driving iron???
Are the KSI Hybrid prototype shafts something to avoid for a Driving Iron?
bump
I guys,i haver a question,i putt my Apex UT 21º to 19º,but i use Nspro 950 regular steel Shaft, do you think is better to change for grafite?thanks
Depends on how it's working for you Bruno, lighter weight steel shafts can work in a driving iron but generally you'll see most people (including tour pros) using graphite in that club.
Hey Guys... Great job! Any advice for Cobra king utility iron shaft? i swing around 92-95mph (trackman) with it going 200-210 . I have the rogue 85 stiff hybrid shaft that seems very loose and balls go right. I also have kbs c taper lite in stiff that seems a bit to heavy with balls going relatively low. any suggestions?? thanks!
Tensei CK Pro Blue might be a good one for you to try Josh
thanks so much... 70g stiff?? 80g TX?
Ian, why is that I (as a natural fader of the ball) and many other hook a hybrid? Why haven't manufactures fixed this issue? I, personally use this flight to my advance depending on hole shape etc but for a natural drawer of the ball this club could be a nightmare. I always thought it was down to the offset.
We'll do a video on hybrids and why they tend to draw for some players.
I have a driving iron with an x100 in it, would you recommend changing it to a graphite hybrid shaft, like the Accra Matt tested ?
Would recommend trying graphite if you aren't getting the results you want with the x100
putting an x100 in mine. the stock 90 gram shaft feels way too light for me. i want it to feel like my irons
As a players with between 116-118 club head speed, how should I choose between a graphite and steel shaft? I have a C Taper 120 X in my TMB, but I feel like something a little lighter could give me a little more control.
Best thing to do is demo different shaft options during a fitting Kirk, the higher weight options from this video would be good ones to try for you
I've asked for this a few times, just don't understand the lack of content throughout RUclips. Why is there nothing good about the new cobra forged tec black irons/ cb and mb irons on RUclips? Just wondering. Driving iron all day over 5 wood
Not sure about other channels Dominic, but we don't have them in the shop at the moment to test. Our plan for the future is to get more product in just for testing purposes, but for now we generally only test product that is part of the demo matrix in the studio.
TXG Tour Experience Golf Understood. They are just too cool looking, if they stack up to the competition I need them hahaha
👍👍👍
The new Srixon U iron should be out soon
Do have any news on pre sale reviews Ian?
Not yet Stewart
Please make a video on how adjusting the driver loft sleeve affects lie/loft/face for different brands!!!!! I just ordered a Ping G400 driver and find it too toe up. Any tips?
Alexander Yu .... Step on the toe and flatten it.
Elvis Presley 😂 That will be my last resort
I believe that adjusting the loft up or down on the ping will make it flatter. I think i read somewhere that it's most upright setting is at standard. Which is opposite to what most other manufacturers are
Scott Timmins Yea, I read that on GolfWRX and was surprised to hear it. I am not sure what the most toe down setting is. So many conflicting opinions on it.
Alexander Yu i would imagine it would be at the lowest or highest loft setting, if the standard loft is the most upright. Sounds like it would work the opposite to the taylormade loft sleeve, for example
What loft do you think is the most common for bringing a 4 iron to 3 wood , I have a 19° hybrid that I carry anything from 225 to 240 range and my 3 wood isn't really much different maybe a few extra yards , do you think a 21° hybrid or driving iron would be more suitable
Sounds like it Gavin, as you say not much point in having your 3 wood and hybrid go similar distances.
TXG Tour Experience Golf is that common? , I was guna try a lower spinning 3 wood to create a bigger gap
It's very common, two scenarios that can make that happen, either: 1) the 3 wood is spinning too much and reducing total distance, or 2) the 3 wood isn't launching high enough to generate adequate carry. You'd need to identify which is the cause of your distance loss on a launch monitor.
