txg.ca - We get lots of comments asking if using a set long iron bent strong is likely to yield the same results as a utility or driving iron. In this test we compare the Srixon Z765 3 iron to the Callaway X Forged UT both at 19.5º loft and see the differences in ball flight and forgiveness!

12:10 I agree! I want my clubs to demand I put a decent swing on them to a certain extent. After saying that I do use a driving iron as sort of a 2.5 iron to replace my 3 iron just because it fills the range I need to cover for some longer par 3 off the tee. I use a steel shaft in my driving iron that is about 15 grams lighter than my 3 iron shaft to give me a similar feel but a bit more speed. I have a good history with my 3 iron even thou it was not perfect but what club is perfect. I still miss my 3 iron from time to time. Great discussion!

As a senior, don't hit the ball miles and struggled with hybrids. Tried the Srixon and G400 crossover clubs both at 23 degrees. Could not get on with the Srixon as did not get great distance even when I hit the sweet spot (but that might have been the stiff shaft which was the only option there). However, really impressed with the Ping - in fact bought one - on the course, good strike not far short of an average-strike driver distance. Very happy bunny

Another great video 👍🏽👍🏽 End 2017 I bought the Srixon ZU65 2 iron and this one is so easy to hit from the deck and off the tee. Because the Miazaki shaft gives a higher flight i also bought several months later the Taylormade 790 UDI 2 iron with hazardus shaft. Much lower and more penetrating flight. Also have a Wilson staff V4 tour utility 3 iron instead of the 3 iron from my Wilson tour V6 set of irons . Never thought playing an 2 iron from the deck and off the tee. For me those kind of irons are better than a hybrid, because for me hybrids tend to go too high and have the tendency to go left (right handed player). But as always everybody has to check themselves what workes best for their play. Keep those video’s coming 😃

Great topic, though would be interested to cover more similar heads, such as the Taylormade P790 3 iron vs the UDI, or the Callaway X-Forged 3 Iron vs a similarly lofted X-Forged UT. Be interested what differences there are there, especially the P790, being viewed as a hotter "players" iron.

I recently went for a driving iron, likes the p790 but was told I shouldn’t even consider a graphite shaft as I have very high ball flights with irons so basically got told that I shouldn’t consider a graphite shaft as it would only worsen it. This was from 2-3 different fitters. Think your channel has shown me more than anything that although being fitted is a good thing on the whole there is a big danger of being fitted badly. Especially when you don’t have a huge amount of options on places to go. I would say all of my clubs I have been fitted for have put me into a worse place fitting wise than my old clubs that I’d had from a teenager.

Every time I think of a theory I'd like to see explored and search youtube sure enough you guys come up! Great stuff!
However, there are two things I'd like to see you do differently if you re-try this concept.
    1. Identical Graphite shaft for each club
    2. Instead of your set 3 iron (Forged head) what if you use a player forgiveness style head? I saw Rickie Fowler had a singe F9 iron head in his bag he uses for this instead of Cobra's Utility iron. Which if you go and customize on their website is about half the price of the utility even with a graphite shaft of your choice installed.

    Questions
    1. What is the desired gap between the 4 iron and UDI?

    3. What if Matty had a comparable shaft in the 3 iron?

  • @vic_0315

Nice job experimenting. Although I would love to see how they would compare if the 3 iron had the same shaft and same length as the driving iron. As mentioned the 3 iron had much heavier and shorter shaft, so the clubhead speed must have been lower and could be a big factor for the difference in ball speed.

Coincidentally I can't hit a hybrid or fairway metal either and rely a lot on my 4i. I've been told that coming down steep on the ball typically prevents players from hitting a hybrid (like in my case) so I guess check your AOA if it's steep too

p790 udi and gapr lo are for much better players. I tried both out in golfbox. Standard shafts in both. Could not get into either as sweet spot was too small for me. I have recently purchased a Callaway Rogue Pro 3 iron with project x 6.0 rifle steel shaft. With the options today in comparison to mid-80s there is no longer an issue if you can play an 3-iron or not. Loftwise today is a difference as well. How many could play an 1-iron which maybe had the same loft as an 3-iron today?
Could play with 3-iron back High School days 30 something years back but enjoyed my 4-iron more.
Today ... hmmm ... a bit wee wind well then I remove my 4wood and 23 degree hybrid and take the 18 degree hybrid and 24 degree iron...

Off topic, but do you guys think the Callaway Rogue Draw driver would help me? I have a gc2 for personal use. I swing about 100-105 mph and get 148-153 ball speed. I hit up and get about 14* launch. My usual shape is a high push or push draw with everything from 3W down. However, Driver starts right and goes more right. I just can't seem to get the clubhead to catch up. Even middled shots go too far right because I have to feel a big flip to get the head to catch up then I hook it (different from all my other clubs). I want my normal swing and not feel the clubhead lag behind. Ideally, I'd like to continue to swing out to the right but get a little more draw spin measured by gc2. I don't really want to draw driver per se, I'd actually prefer a nice little push ball where I can aim down the lefthand side and the ball just goes down the middle. Do you think this driver could achieve that?

I've done it with a Nike VR Pro 3i, U65 2i (bent to 19*) and JPX 919 Hot Metal 4i (20*), and they come out to the same total distance with different flights and levels of forgiveness in order of lowest to highest. The Mizuno really surprised me as a good tweener option from my regular 4i to either my hybrid or 3w. Sometimes I just play it as a 3/4 to add a wedge. Good to see graphite as a better option over steel compared to the seniors' reputation of the past.

Great combo in summer however as limited roll in uk at present thinking of swapping in 5wood for 3i & dialing up the 818h1 to 20o though concerned bunching up clubs with same yardages though different ball flights?

What would the p790 3 iron be considered or a rouge x 4 iron? Does loft and forgiveness make it DI or shaft length.

I play LZ 6.0 in my ap2's up to 4i. Bought garp low with stock kbs x85. Too light. Very inconsistent. Is there a wieght you would recommend or shaft in general? Good morning by the way from Dallas Texas. Couldn't sleep after the debockle in LA

I would like to see how a driving iron compares to a game improvement long iron.

See my previous comments on slatt85. SGI and DI have similar club tech DNA and test similar for me.

I am looking to get a utility iron to match with my set of callaway xr’s 5-sw but most utility 4 iron lofts seem to be the same as my 5 iron. What would you recommend to go for?

Would you recommend the Graphite Design Tour AD Driving Iron shaft? Or Graphite Design Tour AD DI Hybrid shaft with either a bored out hosel or (slightly) shaved down tip?
Is there really a difference between the shafts?

Should the swing weight of the driving iron be similar to the rest of your irons? Or can you give me some guidance in this regard?

Hi Matt and Ian. Recently got a new set of iron. Srixon ZU85 3&4 irons. 5&6 in the 585. 785 from 7 to PW. All fitted with modus 105. Already owned the 2 iron with the recoil shaft. The set is unbelievable but tend to push the 2 iron a bit right compared to the rest. Do you think it could be the shaft? Was told the recoil plays similar to the modus 105?
Gave up on hybrids because just keep hooking them. Have Titleist 816h2 set to fade but still. The U85s play straight for me. Also struggle with fairway woods and the 2 iron goes only slightly shorter than my 5 wood and much more accurate even with the right miss. Carry the 2 iron about 220 meters. Just wondering whether I should put a modus in there?

I saw a driving iron for the first time yesterday. It was 5-iron shaft length, which surprised me. It sounds like they're usually a lot longer. Is that right?

Would the accra tzx hybrid be a good combo for the Taylormade 790UDI

Question. I bought a taylormade p790 2 udi. It came with the 6.5 hazardous black, I couldn't find the middle of the club face ever. So I switched it out with kbs C taper 130X now It is a game changer. I swing the 2 iron 105 to 109mph but only carry it 250 off the turf. Does that seem like that iron shaft fits for me? Or am I leaving things on the table. Also do you find a strike pattern difference between graphite and steel?

How do the AMT shafts from Dynamic Gold rate in your opinion given the 3-iron shaft should be a lot lighter than Matt’s set? Even if he sticks with the driving iron, would his 4,5 and 6 irons play better?

Hello watch all your videos. Saw couple months prior to this video you did a review on the srixon u85 at 20 degree and your callaway driving iron at 19.5 degree. Matt’s ball speed with the u85 is almost same as the 785 3 iron and so the callaway has 10 more miles ball speed and almost 20 more yards carry.
Is the callaway that much faster with ball speed?

What about high lofted utility irons VS set irons (example:4,5,&6 iron)

I need a utility 7 iron, most companies make 2 thru 6 iron, they're missing out on sales.
