ok, I'm thoroughly confused... I would have expected more upright to = more left miss. I didn't account for the lie angle being more upright also = shorter club. Applicability for me is that I tend to miss left with all my clubs except my 7i. I thought I was probably in need of a more upright lie angle on the 7i and flatter on the rest to move that back to the center but... I'm going to watch this again to see what I missed.
EDIT: I forgot we are looking at a lefty and the strike/flight logic is back-asswards... ignore my previous comment... I'll be over in the corner eating glue.

Great stuff Ian/Matt.... Makes me think about my iron setup. I play Mizuno MP-5s +3/4 Std Loft/Lie. I am a 3.7 hdcp, std iron shot is slight draw, and I'm confident up through 8-iron, fairly consistent center face contact with desired RtL shot shape. Now when I step to 7-6-5, my draw gets out of control at times. Seem like I am toe up, and hit more toe shots than center on bad swings, I'm thinking length is ok, but I feel I have to play my hands higher at address and impact to control shot shape, and I don't like this. So I feel I need the 7-6-5 bent progressively flatter to match my setup positions similar to my 8-iron (but how much??). Thanks in advance!! TXG, is my favorite YTChannel, hands down!! You do realize (I'm sure you do) that the vast majority of golfers can't feel the difference in swing weights up to 1 or 2 points. That was a study that was done at one time. I agree with everything you said about the lie angle changing the SW and also the lie angles making a huge difference in your ball flight.

Just watched this again in January 2023 after watching some very technical videos by Cowx. Love the techy stuff as you put it even though I am an 81 year old 16-17 handicapper. The nice thing about golf is you can never stop learning if you want to. Some of these factors no doubt apply to every sport where you swing a club or bat or raquet, but for sure they do in golf. One other element, as if there weren't already enough, is that the bend profile of the shaft can make a difference in all these elements, that is, same weight shaft by where one has a high or mid kick point while the other has a low kick point.

In this video you point out the inaccuracy of the depiction of vertical ball impact location using the Foresight GCQuad. Have you had any dialogue with Foresight on this issue? One month ago I reported this tendency of showing strikes two or three grooves lower than reality. Response by Foresight tech support has been very disappointing. Hoping your credibility would yield a more serious reaction by Foresight.

I then tried standing more upright and closer to the ball and hey presto the striking greatly improved. I'm now wondering if my clubs are standard length/lie as this has never been an issue until I changed? I definitely struck my previous irons better and more consistently or maybe it's a slight change in my swing/set up? Food for thought! Thanks guys for your awesome content🏌️👍🏼

This just goes to show how wrong the thought process is of fitting tall people with very upright lie angles and typically not enough length. I have personally struggled with this for many many years with many different custom fitters who want to put me in no more than +1/2” and 2-3 degrees upright. But I have found my best results and most consistent strikes at 3/4-1” over std with std or even sometimes slightly flat lie angles. Tall people will rejoice with the info in this video. Can’t fake having proper length

So, just to confirm, adjusting the lie UP will cause the ball to pull more, shorten the club, and make the club feel lighter? (See 1:48) Conversely, when adjusted FLAT, the ball will push more, lengthen the club, and make it feel heavier?

  • @ocat1979
    @ocat1979 4 года назад +1

Learned from Bradley Hughes about the importance of lie angles. He recommends going as flat as you can hit properly. The flatter the club is the less the face rotates left and right when you rotate the shaft, it just points more up and down. Picture a club with 0° lie angle vs one with a 90° lie angle, rotate the shaft and see what the clubface does. A 0° lie angle the clubface can never point left or right, it can only point up or down vs a completely upright club if you rotate the shaft the clubface turns left or right drastically. Hit drivers off your knees and you’ll find it is very hard to hit it offline. Cheers

Hi, I've watched this video like 4 times. I bought a set of taylormade p790 at one degree upright and one degree weak. I came up with this measurement based on my ping I 200 fitting. When I got them, they didn't feel right. I tried my best to make them work. But it wasn't. I took them to my club fitter here in the Cleveland, Ohio, area. To get the lie and angle checked. To my surprise, the lie and angle were way off, I mean all over the scale. And the length was 1/2 short. So I got the lie and angle corrected. My question after watching this video is that I am hitting everything off the toe . Should I add 1/2 extension? Or should I just get new shafts? 😢it's sad that I spent 1400 bucks on these clubs and ordered them from taylormade to get a subpar set of irons

I used a whiff drill where i set up to the ball, intentionally missed inside the took that feeling to hitting it. Did a similiar drill with 2 balls. Set up notmal to the outside ball and hit the inside one. Still heel shots and i cant make the club hit the ball with the toe. I know i need to go upright based on data and sharpie maks i put on ball to mark club but could reducing length get the strike close to the center? How do i discuss this with my fitter aithout sounding like a know-it-all?

Good video regarding lies of iron - but it would have been more accurate with lie changes of 2* up and down from the lie that he typically plays. Going to 4* Up or 4* Flat only demonstates an extreme that is too far off the mark of where his gamers are set at. And most average golfers are not going to be fit with lies at that extreme. Unless their a fairly tall golfer or possibly a lot shorter of a golfer. There's still more to wring out of the fitting session to show how the idea fitting ends up being good for a given golfer whose getting fit...

Im a toe striker and basically set up for a heel shot to gain access to the middle of the face , i dont mind the occasional heel strike that i get its just a little long left .
I have to say though 8 degrees is a massive lie change ( for 3 degrees variance) ive never messed with my irons but i cannot play a wedge if the lie is as little as 2-3 degrees flat (for me).
Does this difference become more apparent the closer you get to the ball ?

I'm 5'10, knuckles to floor 28.5". I've always played a standard lie, which statically sits a bit on the heal. My ball flight is a high push draw,. My dynamic face angle feels open to the line even when I line up with it at the target, effectively adding loft, even when my path is enough inside out to compensate. I'm going to an iron fitting soon to replace my old and loved '84 Hogan Apex PCs. Looking at Mizuno MP-20 MB, because it's the only club I've hit that feels better than the old Hogans. When trying them out, I found I was having a low toe strike tendency, which I don't get with my Hogans. We'll see if my fitter is able to work on this effectively. Hopefully, I can guide him some based on what I've learned from your channels. Great stuff guys.

Viewed this video again as I had purchased set of i210s about year ago via static fit (6’3” tall, long arms, so got 2 degree up, half inch long), however, still not consistent. Went to club champion 2 weeks ago , after fitting w my swing and body type, going to standard lie, standard loft. Reinforces need to get expertly fitted!! Huge difference.

I honestly just came back from having my irons adjusted. Always have been standard or -1 flat Mizuno standard lies. But did change my 54 and 60 to -2° more for a total of -3 from standard T7 wedges. Read that might help me during partial shots since I stand closer to ball. Any advice Guy would be helpful or would you recommends this?

Im a 2.8 hcp playing mizuno mp18sc playing at 0,25” short -1 flat. Went to a ”custom” fit today, ordered mp20 MB, another 0,25” of as I like my 8 iron more then anything in the bag. The dna optimizer had me at normal lie, but I like the sc18 at 1 degree flat. Would the extra -0.25” cancel the 1 degree from my current set and keep it the same lie?

Thanks for this guys....so I am someone who middles my wedges but have always struggled with long irons....4 iron is hit on the heel etc.....am I correct in assuming if I was to go for a shorter shaft rather than bend the long irons flat this would help....if so it makes sneak as I can middle my 4 iron if I grip down!....thanks.

My mizuno irons are 2° up std length. I typically swing left and a bit steep poor strike is toe. Dynamic fit chart from mizuno put me +1/4" would this 1/4 make a big difference?

Another great video! I do find it funny how I need to essentially interpret the opposite of what Matty needs. I tend to have a out to in swing path, slightly open face, and I hit towards the heal side. So it's fun to listen to what Matt needs to cure his slight draw and toe side hit...and reverse it. Such great content from you guys.

I like the graphics that help explain all this. Thanks. But seriously guys, you're in the weeds talking about a change of .7 of a swing weight - or adding or subtracting a quarter-inch to the length of the shaft. To the average golfer out there, this is negligible. Esp. when so many mid-high handicappers I see choke down a bit on the shaft to begin with. You are looking at this from the standpoint of professionals when in reality the average golfer wouldn't know the difference, or care frankly.

Sorry if already answered. Should I get my lie angle fitted for where my swing is today (OTT), or for where I want my swing to be while I'm getting lessons (more inside to out)? Seems a bit counter intuitive for me to do all these things to accommodate my OTT the swing (GI clubs with lot of offset, adjusted lie angle, etc) when I'm trying to work on changing the swing, and would theoretically need proper feedback from ball flight to know when I've mishit a shot.

Is it just me or is Matty boy’s swing all arms? I mean the ball has already launched and his left heel is still flat on the ground. Shouldn’t that left heel start to come off the ground closer to impact?
If I’m wrong then maybe I need to work on making contact prior to my lower half rotating. 🤷🏻‍♂️⛳️

Hello fellas, love your videos. I think the best on the market and I look forward to all your videos.
Here's my question Sir, fitted for 919 tours last year by Mizuno fitter and you guys made me look at my paperwork and it states that my lie angle is 1' up and next to LOFT is says 2' weak, so does that mean that they adjusted my loft a bit weaker than standard? Very curious to hear your thoughts. I could send you a snapshot of my fitting paperwork, just not sure how to do that. Thanks again and keep up the great work!!!!!!!

I feel like the truth about the clubs now are 1) they are too long and 2) irons lofts are too strong. I’m a 6 handicap and just this year went to shorter irons and they are so much more accurate. I’ve been fitted twice but never for the club length. Same with the drivers and woods, they are too long. The club companies and teaching pro’s don’t tell us but all the club companies want to do is sell clubs. If they can add distance that’s what sells more clubs. How do they add distance, lengthen the club and for iron make stronger lofts. Look at tour average for length of driver and look at average driver length for off the rack drivers. If the best players are using a shorter driver why would i use a harder club to hit? Nobody is talking about this because they all want to sell clubs to us!

Interesting science and perspective. I replaced my 3 and 4 irons with std 3 and 4 TM SIM driving irons BUT these graphite shafts were longer than std 3 and 4 irons and I tended to hit behind the ball and right. My theory was that the longer, flatter clubhead of the driving irons was causing shaft flex down, ie “opening the club” flatter and causing a push.
I’ve subsequently changed shafts on the 3 and 4 to s300’s in my other clubs and cut the 3 and 4 to 5 iron length without changing lie to more upright (shorter shaft implies more upright angle to my mind so I suspect that I need to bend heads more upright to cut out the right pushes as a right handed golfer.
    Any issue with my logic?

I got fitted for Ping G400 irons last year and at standard black dot they were showing that I needed to go to about 1 deg upright (blue dot) but because I am left handed, they didn't have a blue dot head for me to test so we just went with it. For the last year I have been fighting with pulling everything to the right with particularly my PW - LW (5-9 seem straight or even slightly fade) Would you recommend I go and have the Lie checked again or maybe even adjust the lie angle for just those shorter clubs?

I have the same issue as Matty, strike more off of the toe. With my current clubs that I got fitted, they gave me +1° upright and +.25 length, and I hit everything off of the toe and left…. What I’m getting from this video is that I should maybe keep the added length but go down to standard lie angle, right?

  • @myopenmind527

I used to always grip my clubs at the very top of the grip.
When I got fitted they lengthened the shaft of my new clubs.
My grip is more conventional and I’ve more control of the flight and direction of my shots. My handicap has dropped from 14 to 6.
They also adjusted my lie angle.

There’s no other channel out there to match the quality of this, gents - superb. I’m a 5’10” ‘high handle’ steep swinger who fights an out-to-in tendency and a toe side strike. My last three fits have been standard length, 2 degrees upright. I have a sneaking suspicion now that my swing needs to change fairly dramatically or a slightly longer club would help. Hmmm...

Makes so00o much sense, my clubs are 2 up and I fight the toe strike all the time and my irons are always going left. With 7 iron I'm drawing the ball (closed club face and tow strike) 12 to 15 yards at 175 - 178 yards.
Tons of help with this one

I find this really interesting! As a 17hcp (been down to 11 half a life time ago) I have made changes to my swing towards Bryson’s side of things. Had doubles of my 7 iron and 56 degree wedge (I’m playing one length btw) and decided to have the duplicates lie angle changed from ~62 degrees to 72 degrees.
Obviously, that makes the shaft way too long, and I haven’t adjusted that and only tried it a little at the end of last season. What I did find was that I hit the ball much better. Even though the club was shorter, weight was different, I felt like the consistancy in my ball striking improved a lot. Like having the ball that close to me forces me to swing really tight.
I consider changing the rest of my irons and wedges. Since they’re all same length already, it makes sense to keep the lie angles the same too.
I will experiment with it during the spring (in the middle of Sweden where I live).
For the record, I have noticed that the ball tends to go more left than I’m used to. But I think adjustments can be made to control that. Either by aiming differently, ball position in the stance or… something!
I like to experiment, and although my circumstances are far from ideal (with a ~3-4 month season), it’s so much fun to find new ways to do things. I don’t necessarily need to do things like Bryson, but he sure has made me more curious about the game, and the will to find what works for me. I’ve played golf (on and off) since I was 10 and I’m now 36. These past 2-3 years have been the most interesting and motivating yet!

At the beginning of the video, you present the hot metal pro. Considering they are not forged how much they can be bended ? You’ve builded ma a combo set with these in my 4 and 5 and I was wondering if you can adjust them as much as the 919 forged. Great presentation guys ! Your developing a group of knowledgeable customers !

I fitted myself on DNA system for a set Wilson v6 and the fitting came in at 1/2longer 1 flat kbs 120s .when the club came in they were only 1/4 longer. So I sent them back .they sent a new set the same .wasn't happy but the Wilson rep said try them. if no good i will get them changed. But they are perfect. It makes sense now. thank you.

lie angle will effect direction mostly in wedges...this is very important as these are the scoring shots. The fact that it will change swing weight is nice to think about but nobody can pick up a club and tell me which d1 or d1.5. Not important. Main focus is on shaft flex, club length which effect centeredness of hit. Once that is established we can narrow focus with loft and lie, club makeup and finally gaps between clubs (loft) and accuracy (lie) so we can lower scores.

I’m learning way too much, way too late in my golfing life. I have my hands quite low to the ground and as a result the toe of my clubs sit slightly upright. I’m a 10 handicapper but I battle a draw/hook as my shot shape. Always thought it was a swing path issue. Now wondering whether it’s lie angle?

I got fitted and was told to do 2 degree up, but shaft stayed regular and when I set up I notice my club angle is not flat it’s upright on the longer clubs? Is this normal? I hit all my clubs straight except for the 4-6 those normally will fade out.

If hands are at constant strike height, and the club toe was moved up or down (4°), ball goes left or right, at same shaft length. And loft also would be lower & higher?

Did irons from 29-30 years ago have a heavier swing weight? I find I have less feel of the club head for the past 7-10 years than what I used to and I feel it has negatively affected my swing. Everything feels so light to me now.
