I nudged ball position forward about 1" on a shot with the 5-wood the other day to get a little higher flight and let it ride the wind. Huge change. Better strike, better flight, straighter. So I kept doing it to see if it would work some more. And it did! Such a tiny change made such a big difference. Can't wait to watch it steadily creep forward until I start topping them and decide I need a new 5-wood.
Same here. I love seeing the numbers and how something so simple as striking the ball with the right part of the club is so dependent on where the ball is in your stance.
I got fitted by the Titleist Tour Van about 5 years ago at my club. Saw the same dude fitting Dufner in the next month of Golf Digest. He was awesome and we geeked out for an hour because I ask questions like a 6 year old. I pulled the old hybrid out of my bag because it was so inconsistent. Fitting made a huge difference (-0.5" shaft, right kick point, etc.), obviously, but the best advice was, "Make the grass dance." The grass in front of the ball should be lightly scraped, but no divot. Having that visual was very helpful for me. That's the last thing I say before pulling the trigger on my hybrid and I've become a very consistent hybrid player. Thought I'd pass that along since that was helpful for me. @TXG - as a fellow lefty Canadian, now enjoying 12 months of golf a year in California, keep the content coming! Numbers junkies like me are loving it!
I totally agree that I need this video too ... However I didn't get: What I needed to do so that I could hit my fairway wood or IF I tried a Hybrid what to do properly. I agree that Matt sure can do what ever's asked of him as some other commented earlier. I don't think I fell asleep any one of the three times I watched so I wonder what I've missed.
Talk about lightbulb moments! I've been all four of these 'bad' setups with both hybrid and fairway. Back to basics I go. Legendary content. Just saved so many strokes across the globe with that one.
THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU. i have learned more about this game in the last few weeks of watching your channel than i have from the lessons from 2 teachers and 30 years of playing.
Wow you guys are in my head I literally haven’t hit my 3 wood in months because I just can’t keep it under control. The content and chemistry between you guys is unbelievable. Thanks for the help gents stay safe!!!
I have to say these latest videos have completely changed my game, my driver is now carrying about 270 when before my total was 250! Will try these tips for my woods next and see how i get on, nice one!
Glad to see a gr8 hybrid video 👍 Im a natural driver and low irons stricker but Im dredful with woods, Im alright with small head hybrids, a 16°/17° hybrid fills the gap nicely.
So many of these little data nuggets and gems are buried in some of the club review videos from the past couple of years, but to have a concise explanation and demonstration of how setup influences the launch conditions is absolutely PRICELESS. You are inspiring and creating better golfers with this content. Absolute LOVE for you boys!
Video Suggestion : Matt, a few videos back you mentioned a few years back your swing speed was not near that fast. A video describing what you did over a long period of time to increase your swing speed would be fantastic!
I like hybrids. I have a complete set of them instead of using irons. I agree with you guys. Play the ball slightly ahead in your stance and I sweep it disturbing the ground a small amount. Works well for me. I have had pro's at clubs tell people to hit down on the ball. Might work for some but I like my way better. Great review guys !!! Enjoyed seeing this. Joe
It's great you lads have such a vast library of content here, iv been struggling with the 3 wood the start of this year. And this has really helped Thanks.
So i want to say your content is excellent for the levels you seem to be providing for. Having played golf for over 50 years and playing to a 10 handicap, once was a 3 most folks or avergae golfers cannot come close to swinging like Matty. Great mechanics. I believe you need a more balanced mix for the average guy and your tube would be perfect.. Just my thoughts.
can't really demonstrate these concepts with a less consistent player Brad, we need to be able to control the variables as much as possible so that the information and visuals we're giving are accurate and easy to understand
Loved this video. Really love how you show the bad setup consequence and what happens when setup is great. Students need to know what’s wrong first before they can fix it.
Outstanding video. I don't know why I hadn't thought of this earlier, but I just started tracking the positioning for each club to get the optimal shots. I added the info into my cell phone so I can easily access and remind myself where to position myself upon address. Hopefully I won't have to adjust too much over time. LOL ... always a work in progress. Great insight!
hvaent commented since you guys implemented it but really liking the timepoints where you have different talking points, helps skip to certain parts, nicely organized. Keep up the great work guys!
Team TXG, this is an AWESOME video, very timely, well explained ACTIONABLE content to help golfers get more out of their game. Much needed and appreciated!
Great stuff guys. I saw way too much of myself in those bad shots, but now I can experiment more to understand why misses are going a certain way. Thanks
Excellent instructions! As a senior golfer, I do not carry a fairway wood. I do have a 16degree hybrid which I can hit almost as far as most my age hit a 3 wood. When I was younger my index was under 5, (now almost 10) and I could hit long irons. I think this is why I like the hybrids better than the fairway woods.
I got this same advice in a recent fitting. For my hybrids I used to play the ball in about the same spot as my mid irons. Moved it up a bit and my contact immediately got much better, especially on a good swing. No amount of ball positioning seemed to help with a fairway wood, though, so we ditched it and went with a 2H instead.
Thanks guys! Great video. As someone who uses hybrids as part of my setup. Great tips. Really enjoyed the direction on the 3-Wd as I struggle up the “top far forward” setup. Will take the “bring it back a wee bit” to the course on Thursday! Thanks guys 👍👍
With all these videos you guys are going to shave shots of people's handicaps! Best free advice is always to go back to basics! I know I check my ball location consistently throughout the season, pop down an alignment rod for a range session and just focus on ball position!
This video and the Iron swing/Driver swing video are some of the best stuff you guys have done! So good, so much great information in such a small time investment for the viewer!
Great video, this is exactly what I was struggling with my 3 wood off the tee! Had it set up as a driver and had the same inconsistent flight issues in addition to a heavy slice. Moved it back now and it’s much improved, now being a fade and my distance is increased. 👍
Seeing that ballooning one helps alot. I do that with almost all of my clubs, but I dont usually struggle with distance, it's the side to side that gets me.
Always learning great information from this channel. I've been struggling with both my fairway woods and hybrids recently. This helps. I can only dream of having Matty's swing. Keep the videos coming. Thanks
Absolutely superb stuff! This will make a huge difference for me... I know its often setup that makes the difference, doing it's with slope and lie on the course makes it all the more difficult. This analysis will help so many people figure out why something is happening and make a change when needed. Well done guys.
Pretty much never hit 3wd off the deck anymore. Just don't have the confidence. It goes a long way, and can go very badly if it's just slightly off. Similarly my hybrid is rarely used for inconsistencies. Most time I just take what I can get with my 4 iron on long holes. It more likely stays in play and even if I have a pitch left or something that's still better than the risk... Need to work on this.
Great video gents. If you do talk wedges can you look at the dynamics of the flop shot. Compare a shot with some spin vs. a flop shot and how they both stop on the green.
Thanks guys great video it shows me there really is not a big variance 3-4” in the setup which make a big variance in the shot. Tells me I need to be more diligent as I set up to the ball and why I hit some great and then all of a sudden top a 3 wood.
This video is so helpful im very much an iron player and are guilty of putting hybrid/long irons too far back. And fw have never got on with so this video is so helpful with that when i get one
The exact things I struggle with! Lose the proper ball position when on the course but do great in the bay. Fantastic explanation of what is happening on the course and why it’s happening! Thanks guys!!!
Great video!! Would love to see the side camera view when Matt actually hits the ball! Would be great to see where the club strikes the ball and what it looks like through impact/interaction with the turf.
Along the same vein as recent topics. Would you guys be able to talk about how to hit driving irons? I have a P790 UDI and some days I really struggle with it. Thanks! Love the content!
Really enjoy your latest series of "how to hit.."! Would love to see a video about how to hit a driving iron from the deck and from the tee :) Keep on with the awesome content
Great stuff as always guys! I love the simplicity and focusing on the fundamentals! All of these instructional videos have been so good! And Matt great job for throwing in all those different swings! Super impressive! 👏🏼👏🏼
It's funny how pretty much every golf youtuber out there has tried to make this video, but only you guys go deep into both of these shots in detail with the launch conditions and actually address BOTH setup mistakes (too forward, too back), unlike most that just say "hit down more"
Great job guys. This plus trying to eliminate the hooky hybrid and all will be great. I have always hit 3 wood like a bomb, your advice about why made me understand driver as well. Road to a million!!!
Excellent video, I've been unsure on where to play my hybrid in my stance forever, sometimes it's thin and sometimes it pulling left, and I feel like my 'corrections' are pretty much the extremes described here.
I play a 17 degree udi which I love off the tee when I don’t need or want to hit driver (very occasionally may hit it off the deck) Be great to understand what the optimum numbers are for this type of club if you fancy dropping another video like this.
Great content. Looking fwd to implementing in a practice session. The use of the bay to verify the changes is so much more powerful than the videos shot outside...I'm hooked.
Great video! Hard to believe you are in Toronto. Content like this and I think I might have to go in for some club fittings just to support the channel!
Great video I have watched a bunch of videos giving different tips on this but seeing the ball flight and having the numbers shown of what I do (ball to far back) was eye opening! Can wait to get to the range and work on it!
I am crippled when trying to use a traditional hybrid. However, the cobra one length 4-hybrid was a game changer for me. I can carry 225 all day with it and have complete confidence with it.
I totally love my Callaway Rogue Heavenwood This club helps me get the all up in the air. Don’t carry a hybrid in my bag. I tend to hook them. 3 wood, Heavenwood, and a 9 wood. All Rogues. Stay safe everyone.
Yes! I’ve been putting the ball too far forward, which explains why my hybrid is barely getting to 5 iron distance. Gonna need to push it back 1-2 balls.
Really good stuff, goes to show how important ball position is. Sometime I get way too far forward on driver, and have been needing to chase, or I hit it in bottom of clubface, with an occasional top. I'll have to experiment a bit more with the 3w and Hyburrito!!
Great video as always gentlemen, and super helpful advice as hitting my hybrids consistently has been a bit of an adventure, as I’ve tended to sweep or slightly lifted up on my hybrids versus hitting slightly down as you suggested. Can’t wait to test it out on the range, thanks guys, I’m addicted to watching your videos now, ha!
I’d love to see matty and Ian playing in the uk. Rick/Pete vs matty/Ian. Please make it happen.🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻🤞🏻
Get these guys on Ricky's RUclips Golf day
My childhood favorite show was Bert & Ernie. Today, it is Ian & Matt.
TXG content has been on fire for 2020. If possible can we see Matty's or Ian routine for ball position on a golf course. Cheers
I swear Matty is a human robot. He can literally do anything he’s asked of.
who is marty
4plus4equalsmoo edited thanks ☺️
One HUNDRED percent. I need to practice more....
Yep, he's a Cyborg, but it's best that you don't know where Ian has to put the battery!😜
He never misses. Even in bad set up. Great stuff!
These guys are seriously putting out some of the best golf content. I love the technical side of things.
Same here. I love seeing the numbers and how something so simple as striking the ball with the right part of the club is so dependent on where the ball is in your stance.

Not even started watching but gave it a like already... That´s how much I need this video!
I think most of us subscribers do that already...but with the contents that TXG puts out, why wouldn't we.
Heard that buddy.
I totally agree that I need this video too ... However I didn't get: What I needed to do so that I could hit my fairway wood or IF I tried a Hybrid what to do properly. Ball placement in stance.
Talk about lightbulb moments! I've been all four of these 'bad' setups with both hybrid and fairway. Back to basics I go. Legendary content. Just saved so many strokes across the globe with that one.
I really enjoy this type of instructional video. I love Ian’s comment that “the swing is a consequence of bad setup fundamentals.”
THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU. i have learned more about this game in the last few weeks of watching your channel than i have from the lessons from 2 teachers and 30 years of playing.
Amazing, this is exactly the type of visual I needed to see. Matt is an absolute machine. The 4 people who gave this video a” thumbs down “ are crazy.
Guys love this VID. The ball position camera shot is fantastic and I would suggest you do a lot more of this. Cheers
Within 2 mins of the video I understand what I've been doing wrong. This channel is incredible
been watching txg for 6 months now... probably the most informative and insightful video on the two clubs I struggle with most. 10/10
Wow you guys are in my head I literally haven’t hit my 3 wood in months because I just can’t keep it under control. The content and chemistry between you guys is unbelievable. Thanks for the help gents stay safe!!!
What was angle of hybrid?

Just when you start hoping about TXG doing a hybrid video..... boom. Coming in with the fire.
Absolutely the best video I have ever seen on ball placement with hybrid and fairway woods. Thanks another great video by TXG

@@clubchampionmedia Too bad...😕
Hitting like a mid/long iron immediately allowed me to control ball flight and instantly stopped missing left. Thanks TXG.
Thanks for listening to your viewers and putting this video out. Once again great work!!
Loved this video. Really love how you show the bad setup consequence and what happens when setup is great.
Students need to know what’s wrong first before they can fix it.
Thank you. Exactly the info I was looking for. Hybrid and 3 wood are the two clubs I struggle with most.

Really liked this, I enjoy the tutorial type videos as much as the other content.
Great stuff guys. I saw way too much of myself in those bad shots, but now I can experiment more to understand why misses are going a certain way. Thanks
Thank you Ian and Matty! I just had that "light bulb" moment Ian alluded to :) Brilliant work guys! Looking forward to my TXG fitting!!!

Thank you for this video! All though 3 years ago. I run from the hybrid and use 3i and 4i
Another gem 💎. Ball position has been my nemesis many a time. Thanks!
thank you guys!!!!!!! showed my biggest mistakes with those two clubs.
With all these videos you guys are going to shave shots of people's handicaps! Best free advice is always to go back to basics! I know I check my ball location consistently throughout the season, pop down an alignment rod for a range session and just focus on ball position!

Superb, boys. It seems wrong to have not paid for these golden nuggets of advice. My furloughed 3 wood may see the light of day once more!
Seeing that ballooning one helps alot. I do that with almost all of my clubs, but I dont usually struggle with distance, it's the side to side that gets me.
Really helpful video as I'm getting back in to the game and struggling with my hybrid & 3 wood and being a lefty watching a lefty is super helpful 👍
hybrid: kindof in a no man's land in the bag! such great commentary
Always learning great information from this channel. I've been struggling with both my fairway woods and hybrids recently. This helps. I can only dream of having Matty's swing. Keep the videos coming. Thanks

Top drawer content as always, I've moved from too far forward, to too far back without realising it. Hopefully this will have it sorted 👍
I used this advice today with my 3W from the fairway and hit a nice 220 yd draw on a par 5.
Thanks guys great video it shows me there really is not a big variance 3-4” in the setup which make a big variance in the shot. Tells me I need to be more diligent as I set up to the ball and why I hit some great and then all of a sudden top a 3 wood.
My playing partner and I have been working on this this morning, I’m going back to the range this afternoon now! Great insight again, thank you both
This video is so helpful im very much an iron player and are guilty of putting hybrid/long irons too far back. And fw have never got on with so this video is so helpful with that when i get one
This was absolutely fantastic, and extremely beneficial , thanks!
Brilliant video, was doing exactly this with my 3 wood ball to far forward and results where exactly the same as Matt's shots
This was awesome! This was eye opening and amazing how a just a few inches makes a huge difference. Thanks!
Matty jumped right into my shoes with that first 3 wood 😅. This is so informative! Best channel around
Along the same vein as recent topics. Would you guys be able to talk about how to hit driving irons? I have a P790 UDI and some days I really struggle with it. Thanks! Love the content!

Thanks guys! I've really enjoyed all these set-up/how-to videos. Great to reaffirm some basics!
This was great thanks. Any chance of a sequencing video please? It'd be a massive help.
The sound of the 3 wood being struck in the correct ball position sounded soooo good.
Thanks for this, super informative! Can't wait for the video on the wedges.
I’m constantly going back and forth between woods and hybrid and frustrated with both. Really appreciate the video. Congrats on 85k, already at 85.3 .
85.4 now
It's funny how pretty much every golf youtuber out there has tried to make this video, but only you guys go deep into both of these shots in detail with the launch conditions and actually address BOTH setup mistakes (too forward, too back), unlike most that just say "hit down more"
And that second 3 wood ball back low push is exactly what I see out of mine... Can't stress enough how great this content is!!!
Love these lesson tips incorporated with club fittings.
Great job guys. This plus trying to eliminate the hooky hybrid and all will be great. I have always hit 3 wood like a bomb, your advice about why made me understand driver as well. Road to a million!!!
Would love to see Mizuno hi fli hybrid with iron length shaft tested. Thanks you guys always have something of interest.
Excellent video, I've been unsure on where to play my hybrid in my stance forever, sometimes it's thin and sometimes it pulling left, and I feel like my 'corrections' are pretty much the extremes described here.
Great explanation as to why I can't hit 3 wood from the turf, looking forward testing this ball position 👍
I play a 17 degree udi which I love off the tee when I don’t need or want to hit driver (very occasionally may hit it off the deck)
Be great to understand what the optimum numbers are for this type of club if you fancy dropping another video like this.
Great video, as always. Simple but powerful tip, and a needed reminder for me. Still not convinced Matty isn’t actually a robot...
Sweet!! I asked for exactly this on the other video. Thanks!!
Love these type of videos. I literally want to do these experiments on my own but don’t have the time or equipment.
This video is right in my wheelhouse. I needed this.
Great video lads this relates to every golfer
Ditto, Just what I needed from the Golfologists. Superb.
excellent help, added to the keep pile for future repeat watching!
Need more “How to do it correctly” guides like this.
Its like you guys read my mind. Been struggling getting my fairway wood up in the air so this is super helpful!
After watching this I might be able to say my fairway woods will become my friends again. Great stuff!
I totally love my Callaway Rogue Heavenwood This club helps me get the all up in the air. Don’t carry a hybrid in my bag. I tend to hook them. 3 wood, Heavenwood, and a 9 wood. All Rogues. Stay safe everyone.
Fantastic video. And yes, the Wedges version is a must!
💡Yes that was the moment when you said the shallow swingers out there & I will try to put that into my swing today if it’s not to wet. ☔️
