  • txg.ca - Many golfers struggle with their fairways wood both off the turf and off the tee, often having trouble getting the ball in the air consistently with enough launch and spin. See how important loft can be in fitting a fairway wood properly, and whether you could be losing yardage by choosing the wrong loft.

Rewatching this pre fairway wood fitting. Nearly spat out my coffee at the intro of you saying about the 10k subscribers...
You guys have smashed it. My favourite golf RUclips Channel by a mile now. Genuinely got me through lock down.
You've always managed to satisfy the super nerdy data needs, with quick and credible takeaways in every video. No 40 minute snooze-fests.
I put that down to good editing, and a lot of experience from Ian having to break down complex topics to customers.
Keep up the good work guys.

Ive been playing 17* for years - and just found this based on Trial and Error. Thanks for posting this - i totally agree that MOST golfers would benefit from a 5 wood, and leaving the 3 wood out. I also think most would benefit from 11.5 to 13 degrees on a driver - even sacrificing a few yards to get some consistency

I wish I lived closer. I had two different fittings sessions and left both not feeling so good. I appreciate how y’all explain everything and try different lofts to make sure the customer gets the best fit for their purchase. I have a 3 wood and it goes the same distance at my 3 iron with maybe 30 feet of peak height. So this club serves me no use and yet, that is what I was told I needed. Thank you for all the great insight with your material!

I have come back to this video after a year and I have followed its recommendations - dropped the 3w from the bag, turned down my 5w a degree to 17 degrees (so a 4w) and it is functional both off the tee and off the fairway. The reality was that the 3w at best was only 10 yards further than my 5w but far more erratic.
As Mr Average swing speed, the video was 100% correct. I have not tried a slightly longer shaft in my fairway - interesting idea, although oddly I have shortened my driver shaft to 44.5" and massively improved the accuracy of the driver with no/little obvious loss of distance

I have a faster than average swing speed, but nowhere near tour speeds. About 103 with fairway wood and I still find the 16*-18* range the best fairway wood combination for me. Great content! Keep it coming out.

No 3wood in the bag but used a 4wood for years, however, moved to a 5wood this year for the 230-250yd range. Still suffer from a lack of launch angle but hoping my TXG fit next month will cure that issue...

Another brilliant video to give useful info and bust those golfing myths that no-one else seems to cover. I've been playing a 2 hybrid off the fairway as it's goes as far as my 3 wood with more accuracy, given it's shorter shaft and slightly higher loft I've always been puzzled why. Now I know there's not enough loft on the 3 wood, it's time to re-evaluate that part of the bag.

  • @jballoregon

Driver swing speed 98mph / trackman. I purchased the M3 set loft at 17 and couldn't be happier. It does create an awkward gapping at the top of the bag. I now go 20 degree M3 hybrid for my 205 carry club. I dropped the 5 wood and will probably pick up hollow 4 iron or 22degree hybrid to fill the gap off the 5 iron.

This has been a work in progress area of mine for quite a while. I play off 4 and I've got a swing speed of around 104 -108 on Trackman. In the garage is a Ping G25 16.5, Titleist 917 16.5 plus a TM M2 Tour 16.5. What I've fallen back on more often is a TM 17deg SLDR hybrid with a 5wd shaft (bullet! very similar to the driving irons) and I'm mucking around with 21deg 913Fwd. At least 2 of these have to go but fun on the range

I love you guys, the last gap in my bag I need to fill is between my driver and rogue hybrid, was gonna go with a 3w by default but will be comparing 4 and 5 in the store instead, probably leaning 5 as I mostly use this slot off the turf on long par 5 or after a shitty drive to carry as much distance as I can

I lofted my 5w and 4hy up thanks to this video. Purely to gap UP from my 5iron and keeping stopping power for long approach and par3s. The extra length keeps the ball speed high and I can swing slower for control.

The theory conversations and way you go about things in fitting ideas is great. My first golf coach told me something about club setup 25 years ago. He said to find a club that you have to have, your go to club but it can't be a putter or 1 wood (they weren't called drivers exclusively for a few more years then) and then build your set off that. For me its a 56deg wedge. Everything in my bag is gapped off that club. I don't carry a 3wood because I don't need a 265yd shot off the deck or tee. I go driver, 19 deg hybrid, 21deg utility iron, 4i-9i, 47deg PW, 52, 56, 62. I've gone from traditional sets, to very non-traditional sets. If I play a long course i'll pull the 21deg utility out and put in a 5w that gets me 10 more yards of carry than the hybrid. I am a sub 3 handicap, and getting my set built for me is a big reason why. I used to have a 3w and I think what made me dump it was playing 10 consecutive rounds and not using it one time. All the clubs in my bag now have a very good chance of being used for a reason and not just to force it.

Another great video. My swing speed is faster than low 90s but slower than Matt's - i.e. around 100. I have always been a Driver, 2wood & 4 wood player - for 2 decades. I never understood 3 wood or 5 wood - neither seem optimal from a bag setup perspective - not that they can't hit 'good shots' but from a bag setup. Your little comment about 4wood is basically as good as 5wood off the fairway but better off the tee is why I think it has worked for me - i.e. I like it off the fairway way better than the 3 because it has a shorter shaft and more loft but it can also potentially serve a dual role potentially as driving shaping type club on certain type holes. Ditch the 3 & or 4 iron, add a gapping hybrid that resists drawing as a long iron scoring type club replacement, and the bag today is much more functional than years ago. I will say that for physically shorter golfers, the shaft length of 2 & 3 hybrids are probably much better from a consistency perspective than a 4 wood. I choose the 13 degree 2 wood because I like a driving club that I can Draw - I set up my driver to Fade. Awesome stuff guys!

Interesting! I play off 17, and a few years ago switched to a TM HL 17* 3 wood, made a huge difference to my shots off the ground. I had a Callaway 5 wood as well but it was too close to my 3 hybrid and I can do more with the hybrid than the 5 so I took it out, which is a pity because it's a sweet club.

Congratulations on your 10K subscribers. 50K is right around the corner. This video confirms what I have always believed; that most average golfers would do better to take the 3 wood out of their bag. I'm hitting a Taylor Made 5HL 21* fairway wood. With my swing speed (80 MPH) it makes sense to have that kind of loft. I'm hitting that club around 175-180 yards and am happy with the ball flight. Thanks for the great videos, guys.

Spot on..... I carry a 16 degree Aeroburner mini driver from a low tee peg and from fluffy lies and an 18 degree Aeroburner 5 wood off the deck (tee and fairway). I then carry a 4 hybrid (Ping Karsten 22 degree) and then go to 5-UW Pig G400 Iron and then 54 degree WS Glide 2.0 Stalth and 58 degree SS Glide 2.0 Stealth wedge. My driver alternates between the Aeroburner 10.5 degree and Cleveland Classic XL Custom 10.5 degree (upright setting) both don't get used that much!!! I changed my 3 wood loft from the tour head 14.5 degree to the 17 degree HL head and saw an instance return in distance and playability from the tee and ground; I am however playing a 5 wood length shaft for ‘accuracy’ but I’m tempted to move back to the longer shaft length as my swing is more robust these days. ⛳️🏌️‍♂️💪

Great video guys as usual. I have a 15.5 3W for off the tee and will use it out of the fairway only when I need a long 2nd shot with no hazards and no chance of dropping into a green. I then have a 17.5* 5w for the turf only out of almost any lie. Then go 3 hybrid to 4i. I find this gives me lots of options for the top of the bag for a slower swinger that sometimes struggles to keep driver in a tight window. If the two way miss creeps up off the tee I go to the 3w or when there is a dogleg par 4.

You guys nailed the human physics there. A 17 degree (4w) is the lowest degree I can hit reliably off the turf. And I wouldn't go for a low launch shaft for the fairway wood.
The same thinking should hold for irons too. Average players hit their 5 irons longer on a more consistent basis than their 4 irons.

Based off a discussion you had in the video, could you do a video going into wood/driving iron considerations for a longer, faster swing speed player? When Ian talked about the futility of Matt's low loft 3 wood as it was going too far really interested me and I was wondering if in a video you could talk about how a higher swing speed player ought to think about setting up their bag considering courses they play with respect to hybrids, woods, driving irons. I'm a 1 handicap and I absolutely hate playing a 15* 3 wood, I'm all over the place with it. put in a 16 degree Mizuno Hybrid cranked down to 15 and its my favorite club in the bag all because of the 2 inch shorter shaft and more consistent strikes. I carry my clubs, Driver 275, 15*Hybrid 240 19* hybrid 225 4 iron 205, it fit in my gap just perfect! :)

So Interesting, I watched this last autumn as I was starting to build my 1st bag (started playing in Nov 2019) and was using Hybrids after Driver. Several months later & I've gone to a 5 Wood & dropped the 3 Hybrid from the bag (your 5 wood vs Hybrid is also a great vid). Hopefully at some point ill be able to hit my (garaged) 3 wood off the fairway too. Keep up the great work guys

4w over 3w all day every day for me. And I'm someone with similar speed to this guy. More launch, softer shots, more spin. People forget that spin is a good thing

Thanks for the advice. 1rst of all I replaced my 4iron for a M4 22 degree hybrid(best thing I ever did !),and got rid of my 3 wood and 4 wood, and got the M4 16 1/2 degree HL 3 wood/(4 wood) think it's gonna work out great !

By far the best channel on here for helping us amateurs. Amazing content. This video vindicated my decision to buy 18° TM M3 5 wood head... I will be playing it in a 42" project x hzrdus black shaft.Thoughts?
I wanted something around 250 total from the tee to fit between driver 290 and 3 iron 235. Sometimes my 15° 3 wood runs out near to driver. Driver swing speed 109.

Great video! I've been thinking about dropping the 3W out of my bag for a while - hit it exclusively off the tee and only get another 5-10 yards compared to my 5W which I can hit from any lie. And, I've got a yardage gap between the 5W and 4hybrid. Your video may have been all the encouragement I need to pick up a 3hybrid!

Great stuff. I love data and you guys always hit it on the mark for me. I'm definitely going to check out a 4 wood as I've struggled with 3 wood forever. Now I know why.

My 3 metal is 14.5 degrees. While it hit it beautifully, it is only 10 yds less than my driver. So for the past 3 years, I have a 16.5 degree 4 metal in my bag rather then the 3 metal. Much more versatile! (My driver swing speed is ~100mph). I whole heartedly agree with your conclusion.

Great video! I'm a fitter for TM in the U.S. and this is superb info. Perhaps you could do a video for a fade or slicer, 80-90 swing speed. A little steeper swing as you folks note is definitely most common from what I've seen over the past 10 yrs. Even possibly using the draw type fairways too. Thank you!

Just another great vid! I enjoy tests where swing speeds are closer to mortal levels. Way too many vids out there with Matt-ish speeds. Im below the average speed with about a 145yd 7 iron. I have a 3wood turned up to 17deg and still hit it very low. Maybe I'll try a 5w and add some length to the shaft. I'd love to get up there for a fitting and make a mini golf trip/vacation out of it. Great job guys!

Just getting to this video. I normally hit my 3 wood nearly as long off the tee as my driver- but more accurate. But it is too unreliable off the turf. Time to shuffle my bag around and find a wood I can play off the turf besides hybrids. I do need something to cover 215-225 yards. 4 wood might just work.

The videos you are putting out now are great. I play a Taylormade M4 3HL. Love that club. I'm bang average clubhead speed too. Next club down is a M4 4 hybrid. Keep thinking I should have club in between them but not sure.

The only fairway I have in my bag is a tour edge exotics 16.5° 4 wood. From there I go to an 18° iron hybrid. The lofts are close but the length difference provides the gap I need. I rarely use it, only on perfect lies on a par 5 and short par 4's

I’m the odd one. I’m bang on the average swingspeed. Was actually looking for a new FW this season because I was not getting the distance I wanted. My 19* hybrid was going nearly the same distance as my 3W. Turns out I was loosing distance because of too much spin and launch so it was ballooning on me. Got a new 3W with lower spin and now I get what I was looking for.

Very helpful to me right now to remind myself as I am about to make a decision about drivers/fairway with the new titleist ts range. They also do a 16.5 3 wood hl as they call it and might be my optimal choice for both fairway and tee (instead of a driver altogether)- as also planning on getting the 3 and 4 hybrid (h85). But one issue is club length as previously I had all the club lengths shorter than std including hybrids. Concerned about swingweight balance and also how it might change the numbers you showed considerably if cutting lengths say 0.5 inches or more even.

i just got a Maverik 3... and i really like it. i will use it as a back up driver... for a short par 4 if i want to have a full club to the green... or if i am afraid to drive through a fairway on a dogleg. Also on a par 5... if i get a good drive, and a good 3 wood shot..... i have a long chip/short pitch to be on in 3 with a (hopefully makeable) birdie put... i dont think i can be talked out of it...but please convince me

Great video and really interesting. As usual I appear to be Mr Average - regular shaft, standard lie and length and average swing speed! But I have cranked down the loft of my Epic 3w to 14 degrees and I feel it is easier to hit than the standard 15 degrees, that may be because, as you explained, for a slicer sometimes lowering the loft helps close the club face. When I started playing golf 40 years ago I had old wooden 2w & 4w - the 4w was a cracking club even then

3 Wood off the tee for me yields equal distance to my driver, but more accuracy. 5 Wood on the fairway helps me get the ball flight up more consistently. I could honestly do without a driver.

I’ve never tested my swing speed, but at 100+ I have to think 15* is the way to go. I average around 255-260 with the 3 wood (M2 2017). But I liked a point they made that the course matters. My M2 15*, M4 hybrid 19*, P790 4 iron has pretty good gapping. A little more loft out of the rough is a good idea though, since the spin will be too low to carry.

I dont think my swing speed is high but I love my 3 wood. Probably my favoriteclub right now. I got it to stop on the green from 220 yards last weekend. I usually get a pretty decent ball flight. Total distance is anywhere between 215 to 250 depending on if I really go after it. I have mine set at 13.5 with the weight back on a cobra f7 3-4 wood.
Interesting video. I was surprised by the numbers. I guess it's just as important to get fitted for fairway woods as it is for a driver.

Depending on the conditions of your swing, 3 wood might be a nice fit for you Ben. Sounds like you're generating enough spin with it for it to be a versatile club.

I found on a fitting that I spin the ball to much so was losing distance so got fitted into a 13 degree 3 wood. I went in there thinking I wanted a high launch 3 wood but found the 13 degree has a really nice flight for me. I also went in really wanting blades but even with the lofts bent strong they still spun to much. Ended up with mp18 mmc
