    I really get what you said about no fear with a confident club. I played my best round of the season yesterday, after leaving both my driver and 3 wood in the garage. The 7 wood was my longest club and it was long enough on every hole. I've ordered a 5 wood now and will sell my 3 wood now. Maybe also the driver, but very undecided on that.

    One of my best scores, +2 over 18, came from using 5-wood only on a “new to me corse”. I took my time and tried to keep out of danger and to be in play. That later lead to a cut from 10-12 to 5 hcp.
    To be fair I do hit that one quite far but it is a bit shorter than my drive and far more relaxing.
    Also use it for approaches or long transportation shots => more shots, more practice, more confidence & More FUN.
    Listen to the player and play your statistics and you will lower your score, be a better golf partner and most importantly enjoying your game.

    low heal cut driver another option especially in wind. i find it hard to switch between driver and 3 wood and plan to work on that much more this year. especially when a cut is the best play off the tee. there's a great hack it out podcast which covers all the stats off the tee, not losing balls is certainly the most important. i find it much harder to par from an approach greater than 175yds and i know if i want to get from around a 7-8 handicap into low single figures on any par 4 over 400 yds i can't really be thinking 5 wood.

      @@lawbinson Well if you have that skill to only miss a fairway by a yard and no more.
      You get fairways that go straight into water in Thailand. Greens that drop straight into water. Straight beats long and crooked every time.
      I played one course and on every tee the caddy said OB right OB left. Tight as a ducks arse those fairways.
      As to my own course missing fairways can mean 6 inches of rough. On the 14th the OB posts are a bare 10 feet off the fairway and the fairway width makes US Open courses look extremely wide. If you get really wide the grass is knee deep.
      My game is based around hitting 12 fairways a round and I sacrificed length to do it. It got me down to 5 in my 40's and I'm still 5 at age 58. Must be doing something right.

    • @wanderingbrummie
      @wanderingbrummie Год назад +2

      @@MEAT0 but most PGA tour tracks don’t really punish the pros that much for missing a fairway, do they, because they have the strength to recover. For most amateurs thick rough or in the trees means a dropped shot. On my own course there are plenty of holes where missing by 5 yards means you are either blocked out, in thick rough or in the river. And I can easily miss it 10 yards either side!

    Being in play is the key. According to Arccos, there's about a 35 yard difference between my 5W and driver. What it doesn't show is that the driver's dispersion is easily 75 yards left to right, which on most courses, brings in a lot of trouble as opposed to the 5W, which has a much smaller dispersion. The rule "the further, the better" comes with an often forgotten caveat, which is "when in play". When my confidence is low, I've gone months without pulling the driver out of the bag. I think my scores (and my wallet) benefitted from the decision.

    I've been playing with nothing but a 3 iron off the tee for a while now. I hit my 3 wood a lot better than my driver, but even that is very spotty so it can't be relied on. Hybrids are just as iffy for me. Long irons have always been a strong point and the 3 iron is just what the doctor ordered when it comes to putting it a long way and onto the short stuff. Scores have come down considerably, and distance is no issue - I can comfortably reach most par 5's in 3, so I see no point in using a wood or hybrid of any kind any time soon.

    I mean....strokes gained says what you're saying. Strokes gained doesn't mean "longer is better," and the neanderthals who keep saying that should STFU. Strokes gained off the tee is just about, what will give you the best chance to play the fewest strokes to finish the hole. That means, if you can drive it and it lands in the rough but with a good enough angle into the green, you're likely to finish the hole in fewer strokes than if you're 30 yards behind that in the fairway. But you need to take into account your personal game with what the hole is like, not just bash driver.

    You always preach the woods off the tee. Didn’t Mo and your lessons tell you driver should be used more often. You spank your driver. Why always use the woods
