Most public ranges have some portion of balls that are in crap condition (warn dimples, cuts, etc.). My tips: 1) Don't hit the crap balls as the flight can give you misleading information. 2) If you do hit the crap balls, use them on your shorter clubs where ball flight is shorter. Save the best balls for your longer clubs. If a ball is really trashed with big cuts, throw it in the trash on your way out. You'll be doing the range and future guests a favor.
My nearest ranges uses very limited flight golf balls so basically every ball you hit gives misleading information. They started out using regular range balls but there was a report that somebody got hit past the end of the range, so they almost immediately switched to the short flight balls. I don't have the time or patience to fight traffic for an hour to get to a range where they use regular range balls.
We have a range that is also a par 3/4 course. The first original holes are all par 3. The additional holes were made par 4. I hit my driver at the range and work my short game on the course. $11 for 9 holes is a good deal. 175 yard par 3s, and 375 yard par 4 to finish, with many raised tees and greens. Used to be an old farm.
You should make a practice check list so people can kind of have a guide. I haven’t really seen a teaching RUclips channel do that. That do the video teaching stuff but not an option for just a practice check list. Appreciate all the content man.
I do an hour on the chips and a small bucket on full swings. I dont hit a lot of greens but man can I scramble and save par. Averaging 75 right now at 59 yo.
That’s my home range. I love it, it’s 5 mins from home. It is pricey tho I will admit. I spent 2 hours in the bunker 5 times. That’s 10 hours practicing sand and this was after a playing lesson. I’m still not consistent with my bunker play. Needless to say I got another bunker lesson tomorrow. I’m stoked to be a student of the game! Arrrrg!
Tip #13.. after working with specific clubs or whatever you hit with on the range.. save about 20 or so balls and at then visualize playing a couple of holes that you know/remember well.. setup.. pre shot your drive.. hit.. based on the flight/landing pretend you are there now for the next shot.. pre shot routine..hit etc.. play 2, 3, 4, etc holes. Range practice with specific clubs is fine… but remember that on the real course you’re not hitting your driver or 7 iron 10-15 times in a row…
Try the Murrieta Driving Range, where Rickey Fowler learned. He recently bought the range. All grass hitting areas, short game area, bunker area, and great putting green. Murrieta is only about an hour north of San Diego.

Quoting "Master of your wedge domain".... Reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where they coined the term "Mater of my Domain". 😂 Taking unhit range balls at the end of the day? I actually saw an old guy do that at the local range one day. He had about half a bucket left, and opened up the big pocket on his golf bag and poured the golf balls into his bag. He told a couple of friends that he'd be back the next day. 😵 Expensive range. The muni golf range closest to me charges $15 for 100 balls, but you can load up a range card and get discounts the more you prepay. My effective cost is around $12 for 100 balls. The short game area looks great. I don't have anything close to that that's less than about an hour in traffic.
since its just about peak of golf season, most ranges are packed full of patrons. makes me truly happy. BUT it means you almost always dont have a choice in hitting bays. just be creative at what you have to work with :) purposeful practice is key
I’ve had a pair of dedicated practice shoes, at the moment FJ Dryjoys, that I use on the practice greens and range for the last 20 years! I actually wore the toe cap of a pair out due to the abrasive qualities of the mat!
I live in Florida and understand people come here to go on vacation and I get it and we benefit as a state for that. I don't get where playing load music, smoking big cigars, and drinking until you can't hit the ball comes from. Just enjoy being outside and the golf course. Listen to your strike. You can get better just by relaxing a bit.
This was insanely funny, the balls bit at the end has me in convulsions of laughter. Today was the first time since I was 16 I’ve gone to the driving range. My dad passed away when I was 16 and I gave it up as it was our thing rather than my thing. But having been watching your channel and Rick Shields I got a hunger to get back playing and I bought a new set of Cobra clubs this morning, shoes, glove, balls, tees, golf clothing and am getting back playing. Went driving range earlier and it was like I was back with the dad, unreal therapy sports are, glad to be back. Thanks for rounding off an already great day with some proper laughs. 👏
Great video man, loved every moment of it. At my range their is a security guy, to make sure you do not leave with any of the range property, you can get shot for stealing range equipment 😂😂😂😂
Love stadium golf but the problem is getting bays. Sometimes always SO crowded. If you’re still in SD I’d love to take out for a round at Steele Canyon, my treat.
I know a few guys at my local range that will hit the range balls into the practice net for a good while, then hit them out into the range, such a great cheat code, they'll be fully warmed up, they work on their body motion first, then and get twice the ball strikes for ya £££'s.
Yeah, I always start from my lowest wedge to warm up. I then go through every club in the bag starting from my 60 wedge to the driver. After that, I pretend to play a hole. Starting from driver, maybe a wood or long iron, then a hundred yard club, to a wedge. Then repeat using different clubs each time.
I just use my own balls on the chipping area, as mentioned in this video, better to use the balls you're actually going to use on the course for the short game...not like you're going to lose them chipping (hopefully).
One more tip. When I go to the range one thing I always do is practice my preshot routine. I do it on every shot on the course, and you need to practice it at the range.
I'll share a favorite putting drill: Stand at the hole or a tee in the green, take one step drop a ball. Step again drop a ball. Step, drop, step, drop. You now have four balls on a line at 1, 2, 3, and 4 steps out. Measure the distances or know your stride length. Address ball #1, out loud say "three feet" or "one step." Putt it for pace. Address ball #2, out loud "six feet" or "two steps." Putt for pace. Repeat down the line, and repeat in four (or better eight) radials from the hole. This does two things: 1) imprints a brain connection between the distance and the stroke strength and 2) gives you a measurement system you can quite literally take to the course. Just step it out.
It truly depends in what your practice session is planned around. For example if ur looking to work on working the ball, then it dont matter much. Some intentions of practice need grass such as compression since how divots are taken matter
@@breakthrough8628 well for new golfers you should never use mats let's go that far. I know someone who goes to the range and uses mats and will say "oh I'm hitting so good" then gets to the course and hits them fat!
@@ryanburd3140 that’s definitely me.. unfortunately 🤣, but working to curb that by playing the course more. Might be worth the extra 15 minutes to get to a natural grass range. But gas prices here in Cali 🤯
Loved everything about the video. No Earbuds- Check Different Bays- Check Short Game- Check Wedges- Check Taking Balls with You- ABSOLUTELY NOT I all appreciate how generous you are when you travel and the effort you put into making every video. But taking range balls and leaving. That will get you banned at ranges around this area. It’s just a bad look.
And the reason is that if 10 people does that every day, that range ball dispenser run out of balls QUICK and contrary to popular beleif, those balls are nowhere near free for the facility. When thousands of balls "go missing" guess what happens to the prices for using the driving range?
- Stretch before you swing - Don't dump all the balls in the tray and hit, hit, hit. Just take 3 balls out of the bucket. After each 3 think about it then hit 3 more - Don't use the same club over and over. Mix it up. You don't hit the same club over and over at the course.
Never understood that last one. I am working on my swing. Working on the club path to stop over the top swings. In any sport practice until it is muscle memory. Why would I not be using the same club and making multiple swings in a row until I get that feel with the right flight? The point of the range is to practice. Whatever you need to practice should be the focus. Generalized rules do not make much sense to me.
I generally dedicate my practise session for one specific part of my game. Bunker practise coming up, 2 hours grinding on the beach. It's the only way to really engrain the muscle memory. Oh, and dang right about the music. In putting, I concentrate on pace. First, I go through my putting swing for 5 min, then just pace. I do the TW method, visualizing the roll of the ball thereby feeling the pace and then looking at the ball while still looking at the roll of the ball in my head. My body does the rest. No music, for sure.
The golf course is my driving range, play a minimum of 18 holes every day but normally 27 holes every day Monday - Friday and a minimum of 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday but typically 45 holes.
As someone that works at a driving range, unfortunately too many out there think as you joked. But it is theft. Our range allows you to put your name on a note any we will hold your in hit partial bucket behind the counter for up to a week so you can hit them later. If you are caught taking range balls and or baskets you will not only be asked to leave but also no longer welcome at our facility. The same goes for bringing another ranges balls to ours. Trust me we know who is doing it and have asked people to leave because of it. You are renting the balls to be hit on our range and also paying for use and upkeep of the facility, equipment and wages for staff.
Hey Matt, there are a few things you forgot to mention. 1. Never go to a driving range that has mats. A golf course is grass and mats screw up your game because you have to swing differently because you can't hit down and take a divot on a mat. 2. Hole 5 bunker shots before moving on (learned that from Gary Player on a Playing Lessons from the Pros with Gary Player on the Golf Channel). 3. Hole 10 chips before moving on. 3. Get some friends and play horse in the chipping area and try to come up with ridiculously difficult shots for each other such as hitting flop shots over 30 foot trees, hitting shots through the "Y" in the branches of a well groomed tree, hit shots from a buried lie in the bunker where you can barely see the top of the ball. 4. Use your own balls for chipping and putting (very, very important) 5. The best thing I ever did is play in a Friday afternoon skins game with 10-12 of us in one group. Anything goes. You could talk, yell, scream, throw tees at the guy hitting, talk a little s*it. It totally desensitizes you to the external things around you. Now when I'm playing golf, someone will apologize for talking in my backswing. I tell them, don't worry about it, I didn't even notice. Those are 5 ways to get seriously focused and become a better golfer.
I bought a new driver this year but the best golf purchase I made without a doubt is my GrooveIt brush. I don't know how I lived without the magnetic cleaner. Not even joking.
Here's a great tip.... Play a game while you practice. Pull up a course scorecard for a course you know well, and imagine the course on the range. Hit the clubs you would play on each hole. It's better than hitting ball after ball after ball with the same club.
I really like Top Golf for practice. Unlimited balls to hit. Variety of targets. Top Tracer data that shows direction, ball speed, carry distance. I go through the entire bag each session. I do chipping and putting at home.
Do not take those range balls home!🤣🤣 I get 90-100 golf balls for $10 at my range, and I’ve never left any behind. All of the other tips are useful, and thanks for those! I’ll need to develop a better plan!
Good advice - particularly around the short game and earbuds. One more that others have already mentioned is do your proper pre shot routine each time. Practice should replicate the course as much as possible. And of course the obvious one - don't get on the range and immediately take the driver out of the bag. Leave it alone! Until the end of the session.
WOW, I thought I was the only one that taps the putter on the ground when one of my 5+ foot putts goes in! I even find myself doing it when practice putting at home!
Tip #14... when practicing short game, after practicing chipping and practicing putting, practice getting up and down!! This is the most realistic short game practice there is, because you only get one chance to chip from a given distance and one chance to make the put, exactly like it is on the course.
One thing on earbuds - depends on if you have rude people that talk constantly on the range. As long as it is quiet, then I agree re: earbuds. If not quiet, then the ability to concentrate is more important than hearing the strike - you can at least feel the strike with earbuds.
Not so sure about taking the remaining balls away to come back another time. I know that would not go down well at the Ranges I frequent. Maybe it's different in the US???
$22 to hit off mats?? No way! Here in FL, if you pay more than $12 for a large bucket, you've paid to much, and the only time I'd hit off mats is if it rained hard the day before. You're spot on about chipping, though. People don't realize that they bleed strokes every time they chip twice or chip to anything longer than 10'. It's a score killer.
100% right about short game practice. I spend around 15 hrs per month at least on short game practice alone. I would take on anybody with my 3 wedges and give a really good account. You have to do a fair bit of long game practice as well,as l discovered. Very difficult game at the best of times. Stop nicking those golf balls Matt. Well if I,m honest, l've nicked the odd dozen myself here and there. Aren't golf ranged expensive though? Don't ya think? 😂
Agreed to take any balls you don't use as long as you go back to the same range. ALSO, xtra-xtra-tip: take any non-range balls that wind up in your bucket. I always find 2 or 3 'like new' ProVs, Callaway, Srixon, etc in the bucket that somehow, someone shot on the range. Literally don't think I've purchased a new ball in over 4 years.
reason why i ALWAYS get the biggest bucket of range balls = usually the best deal per ball. Golf is already expensive. Keep the efficient mindset of hitting only a certain number of balls at a time. And usually i'll have half or a quarter bucket left, youll be surprised at how many new friends you can make at the range by simply offering it to your next bay neighbor 💪
Alternative tip: if you have left over balls. Go to the desk and see if they can give you a voucher. My local range recommends this over leaving with a basket.
Ok the take balls home is more of a joke at the end of the video. Not something I typically do. 😂
"typically"

Possibly your best video! Immensely helpful. Having a plan for practice is second only to planning your strategy for a hole.
Great video! Thanks for reminding me to move to another bay where I'm not comfortable, and also for reminding me to use my shoes on range day.
Doing same routine as yours. I also don't leave range balls. I practice 3-4x a week and when I took some range balls home, I bring them back. 😊
Nice tips Matt. Played golf for 30 years and still learn some nice nuggets from other serious players.
Happy to know that I already do all this. Probably why I've seen improvement over these last 3 years.
Never would have guessed that StadiumGolf off the 15 was a top 10 range in the country. Always good seeing you back home in the motherland, MSG
Loved the car tip. My range has mats that don't move but I've been using the home depot alignment stick 😄
Good thing you clarified the ball home issue .... love your video's keep them coming!!!!
Good tips. I would also add sometimes it's fun to play imaginary golf holes so you get used to switching from driver to irons and wedges better.
Thats an absolute must. Along w defining boundaries apx width pf fairway etc
I knew I recognized you from somewhere when I first saw your videos! Great work as usual.
30 bucks for a range session?!?! Fuck that. $14 for a large bucket here in Ohio with free short range practice.
$9 in New Hampshire.
10 in North Dakota 30 who's the thief
He phrased it poorly. $22 total including the the $8 short game area. $14 for a large bucket. $15 gets you nearly 50% more.
$10 here and free short game in CO
That place is where I go for a practice !
Happy to see this place in your vid.
Don't know why your not at a million subs. your videos are great and they have really improved my game.
Evidently some don't realize the comment about taking the range balls was sarcasm and intended to get more comments in this comment section. Worked like a charm! Lol!
Great video!
He was not joking. He even said he got tired and paid for it. When it's a joke he wouldn't be so specific
@@CARPital Lol! That;s the frigging sarcasm dude as that is the excuse people use to justify taking the balls home with them. But whatever you want to think......
@@CARPital You are correct he was serious about taking the balls. Where I come from that stealing. I was shocked he would say such a thing. As a business owner, I was so mad at what he said. I lose thousands of dollars every month to scum bags who steal from my shop. That's like saying I will take three stakes and pay from one. I will pay for the other two tomorrow, next week, or maybe next month.
Here is my comment about that idiot: Shame on you, shame on you. You are nothing but a common thief. You stealing golf balls period. How the hell would the owner know you will come back? Did you get permission from the owner to steal the assets he paid for? I guarantee there is not one sign displayed that tells customers that it's ok to take their balls home and bring them back to use the next time they come back. That way, no need to pay for another basket of balls when you come back. You are nothing but a common thief and as such should be prosecuted under the law. Your pathetic justification for stealing the owner's balls is bull Sh...t. and you know it. How would you feel if that was your business and you saw some idiot on RUclips encouraging people to steal from you? If i owned that business and i saw your video stealing my assets I would call the police and prosecute you to the fullest of the law. Shame on you, shame on you. That poor owner has overheads, god knows how many thieves like you steel his balls and never come back? Guess who notices that his inventory of golf balls is depleting due to people like you telling others to take their balls home? The poor owner. Get in you car give back the balls with an apologise to the owner, and take down that video. I am so mad at you, its like you stole the balls from me. Nice role model you are to kids who may watch your channel.
Quoting "Master of your wedge domain"....
Reminded me of the Seinfeld episode where they coined the term "Mater of my Domain". 😂
Taking unhit range balls at the end of the day? I actually saw an old guy do that at the local range one day. He had about half a bucket left, and opened up the big pocket on his golf bag and poured the golf balls into his bag. He told a couple of friends that he'd be back the next day. 😵
Expensive range. The muni golf range closest to me charges $15 for 100 balls, but you can load up a range card and get discounts the more you prepay. My effective cost is around $12 for 100 balls.
The short game area looks great. I don't have anything close to that that's less than about an hour in traffic.
Great tips! I'm in the UK but would love to try out some of these US ranges and courses. The Stadium looks like a lot of fun.
since its just about peak of golf season, most ranges are packed full of patrons. makes me truly happy. BUT it means you almost always dont have a choice in hitting bays. just be creative at what you have to work with :) purposeful practice is key
The knowledge share is priceless and your entertainment / delivery is the bonus! :)
I’ve had a pair of dedicated practice shoes, at the moment FJ Dryjoys, that I use on the practice greens and range for the last 20 years! I actually wore the toe cap of a pair out due to the abrasive qualities of the mat!
LOTS of really good tips and having a fun time at the range ! 😊😊
I knew the second u said take the balls with you. People were going to lose their minds! 😂 So predictable! Love your videos!!!
Ordered 2 belts. Thank you for the discount code MSG!
I appreciate you making a video like this. Always trying to improve and maximize my range time.
Prefer to drive the extra mile to hit off grass. Thx for the upload none the less, good stuff!
Before hitting the range, where you can't retrieve the balls, always use your bucket of balls for chipping practice first.
@@Sarconthewolf I have the same exact routine. 👍
Good basic & simple tips! Thanks for your knowledge.
I practice two putting and that has helped me immensely. I take 3 balls, and when i put a ball in play, it is live until it is in the hole.
I worked on chipping in my yard. My goal was to get the balls over the driveway. I think it made me good around the green.
Needed this - thanks!

Tip no.12 stop hitting on mats!!!!!!! They are very deceiving and do not replicate a real shot!
If you have the option, hit off of grass. Mats do a great job of masking where the bottom of your swing really is.
@@ryanburd3140 that’s definitely me.. unfortunately 🤣, but working to curb that by playing the course more. Might be worth the extra 15 minutes to get to a natural grass range. But gas prices here in Cali 🤯
yall must be really lucky to live in some nice places in the winter if you can hit off grass 365 days a year...
This is the Mike Iconelli of golf. Lovin it!
I bought the same black Vessel golf bag earlier this summer. I was looking for a luxury carry bag, and I found it!
Loved everything about the video.
No Earbuds- Check
Different Bays- Check
Short Game- Check
Wedges- Check
Taking Balls with You- ABSOLUTELY NOT
I all appreciate how generous you are when you travel and the effort you put into making every video.
It was a joke. Relax Linda.
It was a joke not a dick. Don’t take it so hard.
lol if you have the money to play golf but not spend $60 of 50 golf balls... you need help
I got a chuckle out of that. Good commentary .⛳ Thank you
- Stretch before you swing
- Don't dump all the balls in the tray and hit, hit, hit. Just take 3 balls out of the bucket. After each 3 think about it then hit 3 more
- Don't use the same club over and over.
Thank you, great job! I love it
That’s a great golf range, and great tips many thanks.
The golf course is my driving range, play a minimum of 18 holes every day but normally 27 holes every day Monday - Friday and a minimum of 36 holes on Saturday and Sunday but typically 45 holes.
Tip No.1 Move house to be near a range with short game and bunkers (i.e. nowhere in the UK)
I love matts, never hit a bad shot.
😂😂😂 also doesn't translate as well to the course. Always hit from the grass.
@@BlackWat3rGTRunfortunately that’s not always possible
"Take your balls home" lol what a legend!!! that was funny.... thank you for the tips. great tips
"hole 5 bunker shots". No I'd be there all day. Let's all do what Tiger did at the 2006(?) Open.....72 holes, no bunkers.
I bought a new driver this year but the best golf purchase I made without a doubt is my GrooveIt brush. I don't know how I lived without the magnetic cleaner. Not even joking.
It is so nice
Here's a great tip.... Play a game while you practice. Pull up a course scorecard for a course you know well, and imagine the course on the range. Hit the clubs you would play on each hole. It's better than hitting ball after ball after ball with the same club.
It’s $15 for the Eagle bucket that he got and $8 for the short game area (unlimited time).
HEY kislux I have been watching you for years and im so proud of where you have made it! I love you so much! Also thanks for making my day
Excellent tips my friend!
I love your vibes and and humor. We gotta golf sometime
Maybe tip number *11 should be “Pass on the good golf practice vibes by leaving the free golf balls you found at the range.” 😂
I usually take those home w me. Lol
@@breakthrough8628my range just upped the prices of buckets because everyone takes home balls
I really like Top Golf for practice. Unlimited balls to hit. Variety of targets. Top Tracer data that shows direction, ball speed, carry distance. I go through the entire bag each session. I do chipping and putting at home.
Tried it and it was too expensive and too long a wait…they want to sell booze and hamburgers…the gimmick wore out
@@alcw625 It's the right place for me with a weekday membership.
Great seeing back at home brah!
30+ golf courses within 50 miles from me. Not one has a short game area that isn’t just dirt & a fairway green. 😑
thank you sir ! wish I had found your channel earlier
Do not take those range balls home!🤣🤣
I get 90-100 golf balls for $10 at my range, and I’ve never left any behind.
All of the other tips are useful, and thanks for those! I’ll need to develop a better plan!
Whats ur handicap?
70 balls is $14 at my local range 😢🤬
Good advice - particularly around the short game and earbuds. One more that others have already mentioned is do your proper pre shot routine each time. Practice should replicate the course as much as possible. And of course the obvious one - don't get on the range and immediately take the driver out of the bag. Leave it alone! Until the end of the session.
WOW, I thought I was the only one that taps the putter on the ground when one of my 5+ foot putts goes in! I even find myself doing it when practice putting at home!
Wow! Who would have thought? Put on your golf shoes if you're gonna hit golf balls. Frikin brilliant!
Almost no one I see does at the range.
i was just there yesterday. they have trackman screens you can rent too
Tip #14... when practicing short game, after practicing chipping and practicing putting, practice getting up and down!!
Yeah, you can't take them home. It's called stealing.
Agreed short game is needed on every single hole you can score good with a mediocre long and mid game with a good short game.
Stadium golf is great. It’s my favorite range.
reason why i ALWAYS get the biggest bucket of range balls = usually the best deal per ball. Golf is already expensive. Keep the efficient mindset of hitting only a certain number of balls at a time. And usually i'll have half or a quarter bucket left, youll be surprised at how many new friends you can make at the range by simply offering it to your next bay neighbor 💪
Become a member of a good private club, i get all the free balls i want for only $35,000 per year. Lol. True story
Nice to see you in SD!
Alternative tip: if you have left over balls. Go to the desk and see if they can give you a voucher. My local range recommends this over leaving with a basket.
They can make that facility better by having different sand in different bunkers and have a fairway bunker option as well.
