I had the wonderful experience of attending the concert at the Finsbury Astoria, London on March 17, 1967. Otis Redding, Booker T and the MGs, Sam and Dave, Carla Thomas, Eddie Floyd…. Much later I realized the significance of this performance. Sadly, I had to leave England and Otis died later that year. I am now 74 and my heart still aches for him and my friend I had to leave behind. CJ

And yes, that’s the same guys that are backing up the Blues Brothers remake of the song on SNL in the 70's. Except Steve Cropper in that video looks more like a member of ZZ Top lol. In that video, you can hear John Belushi again call out Steve. Those guys were amazing.

When Otis exits and enters the stage a second time... then a third, then a forth, that shit gives me goosebumps every time he entered along with the most euphoric joy. But as he's stomping around the stage having the time of his life, the realisation sinks in. My heart is crushed knowing his incomparable amounts of energy would be short lived. He would die a year later leaving behind only 3 years worth of (truly flawless) recorded material. Easily the most electrifying performer in the history of music, regardless of genre. It's so unfair, this dude's talent should have taken over the world :(

James Brown, maybe, was as great. Maybe. But this performance is unmatched in music history. It's spiritual, it's ephemeral, it's a burst of life, soul, and beauty. I watch this a thousand times, never get tired of it. Great art does that.

I feel very lucky to have heard him in concert at American University May 1967. He closed with Try a Little Tenderness (written by the great tin pan alley composer Harry Woods in 1932) and it went on for about twenty minutes. Wilson Pickett opened for Otis.

No, Otis Redding's last performance was on a Cleveland TV program called Upbeat on December 9, 1967. Redding was on his way to a scheduled performance in Madison, Wisconsin in a Beechcraft H18 that he had recently acquired when it crashed into the frigid waters of Lake Monona the next afternoon, December 10. Of the eight onboard only Ben Cauley, a member of Redding's backing band the Bar-Kays survived. Besides Redding, four members of the Bar-Kays, their manager Matthew Kelly, and pilot Richard Fraser were killed on impact or drowned.

I mean all of his studio recorded songs are perfect then there his live performances which add another layer and are just out of this world. Incomparable energy and he had more edge than any punk rock & roll artist. He's my idol because he proves you don't have to have an angelic voice to bring soul and beauty to your performance and arts.
