Thanks for adding this, Dennis. I have to confess, I'd never seen this James Brown performance, wasn't aware of it, or the song, until about 20 minutes ago when I was reading about record producer 'Ralph Bass'. Bass's Wiki page mentions this James Brown performance and, naturally, I had to see what all the fuss was about. I am so very glad I found the video as it has enlightened and nourished me. Having read your comment, I searched for Danny and realised how important this whole event was to so many people and so many generations. I need to watch this video again - it's incredible.
I'm sorry to anyone that disagrees but the combination of amazing singing, stage presence, awesome beat, crowd connection, pure talent, and intelligence to choreograph the (Walk off the Stage in exhaustion, with a cape no less, but can't leave the crowd comeback, all to perfect timing with the beat) the number 1 performance ever.

Every time I watch this all I can do is say wow! He still makes you feel it!!!
The Rolling Stones had the choice to go on before or after James Brown in this performance (The T.A.M.I. Show, available on disc). Keith Richards said, "The worst decision in the group's career was to go on after James Brown on the T.A.M.I. Show."
Do you understand how much talent you have to have to scream please and fall on your knees and get the room to go crazy this dude was on a another level
I'm on my second knee surgery from the knee drops with the mike. Coldest sh!t I've seen in live entertainment. The effect on the audience will never be duplicated. Only entertainer to close is MJ , Prince and Elvis.
the cape routine was one of the best in rock n roll! i saw james in the 90's. not only did he still do the cape shtick, he had the same guy you see in this video putting it on him. AND they used 3 different capes. so what? its a james brown trademark and its CLASSIC!
He was a perfectionist, everything had to be done correctly to a T and as a result was probably rehearsed countless times before live performances. Michael Jackson was the same way, and it's not surprising he considered James as his biggest influence.
I NEVER noticed that. I was so busy watching James. Thanks for pointing that out. You are on the one because that is EXACTLY what is happening - the drummer emphasizes that knee fall! Perfect!
I just was scrolling thru some of these comments and seen someone say look at the anguish on his face he coulda been an actor, you’re right my friend. But the man wasn’t acting he was just feeling the shit out of the music. Which is what he always did. James Brown is the god father man. One of the best to ever do it. From his on stage performances, to his singing, to his dancing, to his PRACTICE, man was crazy about practice, and was crazy about executing his music perfectly. Master of the craft and a true pioneer. Reading other people’s comments about him made me smile, I’m glad his aura continues to live on so it reached me and will continue to reach people way younger than me as well. The one comment someone said man how cool is utube can just click and see him perform. It was so wholesome. But so true, how cool is that?! Still 2024 still so cool I can just go on and watch just about anything from anytime
One of the greatest performances in the history of entertainment. So soulful. Half the time he is hardly even singing into the mic, yet he communicates so powerfully you understand his message intuitively. A piece of genius. I like the part when he falls to his knees, overcome by emotion. What woman isn't going to forgive him after that?
Look at the audience at the end, white kids jumping out of their chairs too ! Bob Marley had it right when he said "hit me with music" crosses all boundaries 👌🏻👊🏻💪🏻
James brown and the drummer are perfectly in sync. My favorite part of this is the drummer..I've watched this Ike a million times and love it each time. I could travel back in time I would go watch this concert live. Fuckk amazing!!! LOVEEE JAMES BROWN 🥰♥️♥️♥️
James Brown knew how to put on a show, sure. He was one of the best showmen who ever lived, but his music was unrivaled. You don't just hear his music, you feel it.
@phenomenalwife5380 Before that show there was a disagreement with the producers. James Brown was slated to be the headliner and virtual newcomers, The Rolling Stones were slated to be the opening act, but Mick Jagger insisted on the Stones being the headliner. James Brown said "fine, I'll open" and proceeded to give one of the best performances ever captured on T.V.. I would have hated to have to follow James Brown that night 🙂
I was front row centerstage Blackham Coliseum, Lafayette LA 1968 USL, a fraternity boy when James did Please Please Please for the number one party school in the nation, USL. Blackham was an unairconditioned livestock arena, portable floor and stage. We were all on our feet as James repeatedly broke away from his backup singers, throw off his capes, to run back on stage and slide on his knees to the footlights. His sweat flying in our faces. I have never seen a better showman. He was magic. I'm 73 years old, now. I had no idea how lucky I was that night.
Nobody ever wore a cape better.
Nobody on the face of the earth will ever replace James brown. Nobody.

The man fell 4 times on his knees on beat every time. Please Please Please don't go JB! RIP!
Yes and it's beyond amazing!! I'm in awe everytime I watch it and I've watched it a lot. 👏🏾👏🏾
Wish my man would do that for me. I would lose my mind for sure.
"B a by Pleeezze don't go".
LOL that itself is an act for the history books
@@lisalisa1018 well i ain't your man , but Lisa , "please b a by dont go"! Lol
Love it Deangelo🥰 shit sick
This drummer was on point the whole time!
Straight black church inspired

I agree
his drop to the ground game is off the hook... this is hilarious and soulful
ooo9 koo moo moo
And my knees are aching by just looking at him dropping
They could put this on a loop for eternity and it would never get old, wish i was James Brown.
best just to be yourself
I remember when I saw him do this on TV when I was a little boy ( Ed Sullivan I think, I was perhaps 5 years old) I was got upset and got to crying because I didn’t realize it was an act! lol
My parents had to convince me he was actually alright and wasn’t really heartbroken .
Every time I watch this all I can do is say wow! He still makes you feel it!!!
Maybe One of The Best Live Performances EVER 🎉🎉🎉
Agreed!!
I would never play in a show after James Brown. He was vicious
The Rolling Stones had the choice to go on before or after James Brown in this performance (The T.A.M.I. Show, available on disc). Keith Richards said, "The worst decision in the group's career was to go on after James Brown on the T.A.M.I. Show."
One of the best live performances of all times! No crutches or lights and camera tricks. Original creative performance based on pure talent.
ALLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Can’t plan this in a board room.
MJ but that's it
@@dootek mj was on his living room floor watching this
Man. This is church dude . Thank you James Brown.
Still going strong in 2022 …. Much love and respect to James for this timeless classic.

The audience really got their money's worth with this legend. Wish I could've experienced this live ✊🏿
They got the Federal Reserve money's worth.
Me too💯💯 James showed out and everyone on that stage with him.
this was a free show, they passed out tickets to the high school kids in Santa Monica! I was there!
Do you understand how much talent you have to have to scream please and fall on your knees and get the room to go crazy this dude was on a another level
James Brown didn't need pyrotechnics, fancy lighting, harnesses, video screens, etc. 😊

Michael Jackson, Prince, Elvis Presley and many others inspired by the late great king of soul, James Brown.
by far one of the best performances ever in the History of entertainment! !!!
Indeed
You can see the mark on his knees even in black and white. The dedication of Soul Brother #1 was crazy
the drummer and James Knees are so in sync!!
this man was truly an entertainer
He was a perfectionist, everything had to be done correctly to a T and as a result was probably rehearsed countless times before live performances. Michael Jackson was the same way, and it's not surprising he considered James as his biggest influence.
I NEVER noticed that. I was so busy watching James. Thanks for pointing that out. You are on the one because that is EXACTLY what is happening - the drummer emphasizes that knee fall! Perfect!
he didn't want those $5 deductions in his pay.
@@lucashenderson2775 there performances turn jazzy and they mix it up. They jammin together on this one
50 years of concerts and this still stands as the absolute best single performance ever recorded.
This could very be the greatest performance by anyone of anything on RUclips
I love the showmanship----No one can beg like James Brown could.
Yes YES!!!!
Not even Keith sweat ?

James Brown and the fabulous flames. So good. The hardest working entertainer in show business. Mr. Please please please.
Exactly what I was thinking!

He was a great, great showman and performer and a one off.

how cool is utube, just being able to click on it and see him performing it.

Words cannot express my gratitude
That's why I'm here.
James Brown knew how to put on a show, sure. He was one of the best showmen who ever lived, but his music was unrivaled. You don't just hear his music, you feel it.
Amen... that is the truth
This tune was made to show how good the backup singers were and showcased the entire band. They all got down

Amazing!
There’ll never be another one. We were kids we use to put the sheet or any jacket or sweater on our backs and do the same routine
