- Four drummers. Four tiny kits. Watch as they race against the clock to see how practical these compact kits really are!
Here's the challenge:
1. Run to the studio with kit in hand.
2. Set up as fast as you can.
3. Mic up the kit.
4. Play 8 bars.
5. Tear down the kit.
6. Get back to the finish line as soon as possible.
We've been missing gigs so much, we decided to recreate the experience! Who do you think will get the best time?

Used to haul my kit to CBGB every Tues. from NJ and back-up and down the street to wherever I could park. With heads off (1970s style), could carry 3 toms & cymbals loaded inside bass drum case hooked on L arm, snare & hh+splash in cloth case hooked around R forearm, and all hardware loaded in big 50mm Army surplus ammo box with handles on each end gripped in hands. Looked like a Spanish Armada flagship. At about 100 lbs., bulldozed it’s way through gathering crowds with great authority. Yes, drummers got strong. Glad to have moved on to small kit jazz!
You literally played at a place I have only ever dreamed of seeing pictures of because it’s iconic and I was very very young when it closed
The price of these is ridiculous.
A Ludwig pocket kit is like $200 online. 16" bass drum and just as portable. Much better sounding too.
I also love how the target consumer for these $1,000 "portable kits" are broke buskers and starving artist musicians.
Amen brother. I went Ludwig Jr, put G2s on and I can lift the whole kit Toms mounted and all into my Toyota Caldina station wagon. And it sounds better than these kits in my opinion.
I bought a ludwig Quest kit and I use a DW 20x12 bass drum, 750.00 and I sold the 18" ludwig bass for 150 to a guy that had a kit and wanted double bass drums.600 bucks and I gig with it all the time. On bigger venuse I use a mic or two.
Except a Ludwig Pocket kit takes up a lot of space. The only thing drum kit esque that i could fit in my tiny room is a cajon.
@@AnkothOfficial No offense, but do you live in a closet? Ever heard of djembe drums? I'd think a djembe is a better option than a cajon.
@Ztem Naed I Literally own a Djembe atm. Not sure how well I can make it work in a thrash metal context.
Omg I want a compact kit now haha this was super fun to watch 😂

Second (?)
might have to save for one!
Those bitter divisions at the beginning better not tear this channel apart, Lisa.
oh hi mark
first time i have ever heard of a compact kit
Could we get some more videos with these kits? Different kinds of music, more playing, get a bit of a better feel of what they are like? Would absolutely love that, and I am sure I am not alone
That was so much fun to watch - I would love to see more content like this.
Noted, thanks!
These are very compact, yes, but they cost as much, or sometimes more than a normal kit would T_T
yup rip
yup rip
yup rip
Yea, def not cheap
You don't buy these to save money. (Unless you count the savings of buying a 2-door compact car instead of a big van or SUV to haul your drums around in.)
U guys should make a the biggest drum kit ever
Terry bozzio
@@andreferreira3417 yeah I've seen his monster kit what a dream that'd that'd to own that
They did that with Rob Scallon awhile back
@@matthewgonano636 1700 ??!?!?!?! Is that including cymbals I'd presume?
@@Simon-co6uo yeah I do remind that one 👍
The Wizzdrum kit sounded fantastic.
I wouldn't say "fantastic". It sounded much better than the other ones and would be my first choice if I'd have to choose one of them. 😉
This channel is the best drum channel on RUclips keep up the great content 🤘🏻
Thanks, Eliot!
And here's me thinking from previous videos Jared is a down to earth, chill guy who is really out there to help people....well I guess not just those lot 😂
You guys always have the weirdest most interesting drum videos 🤣. I love it, keep it up 🔥
Hats off to all of you 👏
Great video and cool little drum kits 🤘🏻
The wizzdrum looked like it was going to sound the worst. But it actually recorded pretty well.
Wizzdrum blew all others away for sound quality. What an awesome kit.
Lot's of fun between good friends. Nice change up in programming.
❤️
I loved this. So much fun and amazing compact drum kits. Congrats Jared
I want to hear it with a band. They don't sound good on their own but they might work in a band setting.
What am I missing here? (disclaimer: I am a musician, but I am not a drummer) Maybe it was the mic, but on the gigpigs, especially the last one, the snare sounded like a tom, and the toms sounded like plastic lids from a coffee can. I listened through really good headphones, and I still don't understand why everyone liked these so much. For 2 grand, this would be a hard pass for me.
This was a fun contest to watch and they were all well played, but has anyone watching heard these in person and do they sound better?
This was fun. Thanks for running around with drums, guys!!
So far, I like the GigPig kits in terms of how both sounded! Great video guys!
thanks guys we appreciate it.. greetings from Kjell Andersson & Renne Lehto @ GigPig
Love from Texas. Even though I didn’t get pricing, I got the feeling I could get a kit and start playing again. Good job !
Is the problem price or space? I found my kit, around $800 in cymbals, drums, hardware, and accessories going for $200 on a random Facebook group. Some guitarist had bought a kit on a whim, then got bored with it. There's deals like this all over the place.
@@iansullivan9738 There's legit a Tama 6 piece for like 800 hundred, I'm saving up for it currently. Really serious about progressing until I die 😅 I practice at work and at home, like it's an addiction or something, it's never gone this long with the other instruments that I play either, except maybe with the Piano.
These kits sounded decent, but I think most drummers would be better off gigging with a Pearl Midtown or Ludwig Breakbeats. I bought the Pearl Midtown a few years ago, swapped the stock heads for some nice Evans heads and the kit sounds amazing. The floor tom, rack tom and snare fit in one bag and the bass drum (16") in another. A hardware bag and cymbal bag complete the setup. So, yeah 4 bags which take me 2 trips from the car to the stage instead of 1 like these. However, setup time is similar and sound quality on the Pearl kit is better than all of these.
Still, cool to see these and love all of Drumeo's videos. Keep 'em coming.
That was a very good competition ,learn that anyone can do everything if they believe in them selves
Haha, was so fun to watch Jared trying to compromise Dave. Looks like Evil Jared from Bloodhound Gang is his brother )))
ok... this can't be just me..... I have thought that Dave and Kyle were the same person since I've started following your channel. This is the first time I have ever seen both of them in the same scene, let alone hear his (Kyle's) name! Mind fricken blown!!!! I always thought Dave looked a bit different in certain videos.
This is gold 😂
You are not the only one.......
It's great seeing what Kyle is up to these days! He is missed.
I remember the old videos when Dave had long curly hair!
Somewhere Terry Bozzio's drum tech is watching this video while crying into a tub of Ben and Jerry's
Jared ur so mean lol, paybacks come in many forms lol. All those kits sounded amazing, I would buy one in a heartbeat.
like walking in front of the 2nd guy. A real dick move. slowing him down. You could see he was trying to go around. 🙄
More small kit shootout pls!!! Liked this as soon as i clicked the vid
These compact kits are amazing ! Might be useful for many drummers ! Awesome
Totally. They all sounded pretty great.
@@DrumeoOfficial true enough
All drum kits get a participation award.
I think i started this trend about 8 years ago. i got a cocktail kit, added a high stool and a hi hat- i've never looked back. i (used to) get many compliments from other drummers (on the kit- not my playing). i have since seen every combination of suitcases, cajones, etc. So i'm taking credit for starting the whole scene!!
Although it's easy to see Drumeo personnel having fun with each other in other videos, I really like the way this one makes you seem like a tight company; a group of people who like working with each other. Yes, this is partly due to the nature of this particular video, but it's obviously genuine. I'd love to hang out and have a beer with any or all of you...
ps. I'd appreciate more product reviews like this, with a focus on the sound. Not "fun/goofy", but "practical/genuine". A couple of similar products with the same recording engineering setup that presents a better representation of what the products sound like (with price and practicality). I know you may not want to be a "product review" company, but a review of practicality VS sound might fit in with your general vibe...
That was super duper fun. You guys are incredibly funny and brilliant. Hail Drumeo👌👍. Love and blessings from India🇮🇳❤️🙏💯
By the way, I liked the wiz drum 😁
Thanks, Norton!
Is the portability worth the fact that they sound like poop and cost about 10x what they should?
Ultra-portable, performance-worthy, cheap. Choose two.
Try to invent, market & sell an okay-sounding and relatively durable drum kit (that includes at least bass, snare & a hi-hat) which packs into about the size of a large cajon and can be carried around with one hand for 1/10 the price of any of these and I think you will either get filthy rich off your genius new product or else (more likely) you will answer your own question.
Can I get a usable $200 complete kit? Yes. Can it be $200 and fit in the FRONT passenger seat of a small car and loaded in with a single trip? Not with anything currently on the market, no.
You guys should pick up a lot of drum pedals and compare them all
I like this idea.
agree
They've actually done this before, early on in the channel. A refresh with all new pedal models would be cool though!
dont leave sonor out! they make the most underrated pedals
Small kits are cool! The video was great, and I picked up some new childish ways of sabotaging others. Thank you!
That last kit looks the most like playing on a regular setup. Genuinely curious to try these out.
Damn Jared already doing a solo while traveling
I need to know who edits these, they are so amazingly put together xD
If you want something compact just buy a nice youth 5 piece kit and raise it, Ludwig makes em, Pearl makes em, I believe Tama does too, it's actually pretty decent, I use a Gammon Percussion youth kit for shows, but these are pretty cool too
The last kit looks great. Looks like this is so fun.
I should start fishing for some compact kit after watching this video.
These guys are crazy 😎👍
I find this compact drum sets save space but not time (some of them have many pieces to assemble). I play with a Pearl Midtown and take little time to set it up 😃.
I was skeptical 🧐 about these little compact kits looking at the thumbnail, after seeing them in action it changed my mind. My only however or edition would be a TM-2, SPD-SX, or Strike Multipad with triggers for snare, Bass drum and 2 BT-1 bar triggers or instead of bass drum trigger my KT-10 pedal. With Strike multipad you could just bring 2 SM-57 mics plug those into the audio input of pad then you could put EFX on the sounds the mics pick up from kit w/o having to mount triggers, similar to EAD-10. Damn forgot about EAD-10 that would might work good for this kit.
Cocktail kits next time !? That would be great. It's a very compact way to gig and often use by many gigging drummer.
Heh, that's the first time I've seen the Wizzdrum played sitting down. Whenever it shows up at jam sessions, I've seen it played in the standing position.
What a great video.
Thanks, Jimmy!
Just hangin with the boys, whippin out your smack packs
I need one of these for when I travel lol 😂
Beautiful
Jared's tired from chasing everyone else around 🤣
The store I work for carries the Toca Kickboxx, and though the provided snare and tom leave a bit to be desired, the kick itself sounds fantastic and it's a total blast to jam on! I swapped out the snare for my own 10" side snare and it honestly sounded like a legit kit. It has just enough room inside to carry the essentials (stick, snare, pedal, lightweight hihat stand, hihats and maybe a splash or small crash/ride with a boom arm) and could easily handle smaller/low volume gigs. I would happily keep one in my arsenal!
I just saw this Yamaha hi hat stand... Was the lightest one I've ever seen!
Great stuff... best job in the world
I think I can set my full size kit up just as quick. Of course I’ve done it hundreds of times.
Good idea testing those kits. But Jared's kit stands out.
Cool and fun video :D interesting drumsets! That test should include transporting in a small car or maybe in a bus or subway.Though I prefer pearl compact traveller
Yeah, all these people saying to just get a club kit or a child-size kit or even a cocktail kit are completely missing the point of these rigs.
There is no 5-shell drum kit on the market I would ever want to board a passenger train or a bus with, let alone load in & out of a compact car.
This is so much fun! Nice one fams!
Cool and funny video. Thank you 😉👍👍👍
Pearl makes a compact that sounds far superior to any of these, is more portable and even has a fuckin handle on it. These are neat, but definitely excessive.
Hey Kevin, can you please provide the model #? Thanks
@@shuttersensational idk the model number but if you look up pearl travel set you’ll find it
The Pearl Compact Traveler (their most portable option) is NOT more portable than these, unless all you want is a bass & snare with no toms or anything else. Add one cymbal (and a stand to put it on) and you're fucked compared to the grab-and-go portability of these rigs.
It is a lot more portable than most kits, but c'mon.
Very cool
I also want a compact kit now. Drumeo should make more fun videos
🔥🔥🔥
Those Wizzdrums are pretty amazing. They're completely sold out at their website.
If you are able, I would suggest that you showcase FSA Tajon Bass drum. It is a very nice compact drum that you need to try out.
Thanks we'll check it out!
Great job! Could you include here, in chronological order of the challenge the names and brands of drumkits and a fast runthrough of pros and cons and prices of each? And lastly, which one sounds and works the best for a newbie? I really, really want to learn how to play, been wanting to since I was a kid, but my parents wouldn't let me cause we were constantly moving (my dad was in the military, plus, living on base, you never wanted neighbors to call the military police for being too loud....And now, in my 50s, after years living in an apartment downtown, it's hard, due to a a lack of space. What's made things worse is a lovely little thing called covid, which left me jobless since March 2020, so no luck there, either. But it's been my líneas dream. I'd really, really appreciate it if you could 🤍🤍🤍🤍🤍
Love your comment, Mary. Here the notes we got from Kyle (the race host 😂):
Dave & Jared both used *GigPig's* (Standard for Dave and Extendable for Jared). GigPig is made in Sweden. They're very easy to transport because they have wheels. They make cymbals specifically for them if you want. The Standard kit sells for $1299 USD with cymbals, and the Extendable kit sells for approximately $1999 USD.
Brandon uses a SmackPac ($1495 USD). They are made in the US and come as a four piece kit. Super compact, but does not have wheels. They weigh about 60lbs. Cymbals are NOT included and there are a few different versions available.
Kyle uses a Wizzdrum All In Kit. These are made in Holland and are almost completely 3D printed. You can set it up for standing OR sitting. These kits go for about $1340 USD (Cymbals NOT included).
I hope that helps! It would be awesome if this video inspired you to start playing the drums!
@@DrumeoOfficial THANK YOU SO, SO, SO MUCH!!!!!!!
8:09 That St. Anger snare! =^-^=
I like the gigpig. Maybe I'll make one myself or buy it. To me it's eficient for playing in teh street and move quickly.
5:23 that was 4 bars 😂😂😂 I’m dying
Super cool comparison! But you missed an old school Yamaha Hip Gig for comparison :-P? That would have been nice to see and hear, because IMO they sound much better than these kits and it shouldn't be that much more to carry!
Though I like what my Swedish countrymen have done with the GigPig, I'm not really a fan of "compact kits" after having had a few and gigged with them (Pearl RTG, Traps A400, Aerodrums etc.). Also been down the cajon route with pedals and extra snare. Even though compact kits are physically smaller and somewhat easier to carry, you will often still have 1-2 cases (or a box) for the drums, probably one for the hardware, one for the cymbals. Stickbag. And so on. In the end it really isn't that much more fuss to setup a "big" kit. Only if the venue allow 1 m2 tops for the drummer or so. And the trade-off in sound is worth it. But then again - haven't tried the GigPig.
Except none of the kits showcased in this video have the multiple-bags issue you are talking about. Each complete kit (minus the throne) can be carried in one hand and fit in a single seat of a car or bus. They are designed for a one-trip load-in, which can sometimes be a big deal, especially if you are booked to play in a sketchy neighborhood.
I'm not sure how lucrative busking on the streets of Abbotsford would be??
Worth watching just to see a drummer be in a hurry to do something 😂
I am loving those gig pigs
Now this, this is content
Not sure if I like them Yamaha back in the day already had the compact kit idea in mind with the creation of the hip gig kit
Digging the GigPig. Hope these make it to Europe soon.
LOL. Europe is where they come from! (Sweden, specifically)
Jared's beat reminded me of the Miami Vice song
Compact kits are THING huh you learn sm new every day
I’m trying to get one of the GigPigs, but I was confused while watching this video. How did Jared get that bigger snare? It looks like it’s part of the set, not an accessory or anything. But I went to the GigPig website and none of them have that big snare, they all just have the smaller one that dave’s set had. Does anyone know where to find the bigger snare option?
It's the new version. Ask GigPig about it.
As much as I find this interesting ....i still love more cocktail drums...but still a beat idea ...for either small soaces or easier travel
Should've tried a Traps kit. With the bags it's just as portable as these.
Do they make that kit for a left handed drummer? Being that everything is set up from the opposite side.
wow, I never realised how much time it takes to assemble a kit.
I can set up my Yamaha Hipgig in about 4 mins and it's a "real" kit. First thing get rid of the wingnuts for the cymbals. We used to have a 40min lunch when we would jam so set time was crucial.
Yeah, I can set up a full-sized kit pretty fast, too.
But if "run down the block with it alone, both ways" was part of the contest like in this video, do you still think the HipGig would score better than these little 30-pound expanded cajones? I certainly don't.
Or another hypothetical: You're booked to play a show ten miles away and all you have for transportation is a little Vespa scooter. Do you want to use that Wizzdrum rig or your Yamaha kit?
A contest with no chicken dinner.
Heyyy I love drumeo I'm your fan
Kyle picked a very amazing small drum set I would totally buy one if i had a thousand dollars because it’s certainly expensive
Great video but I feel stressed like I just set up for four gigs in a row. 😬😆
Nick Swardson plays drums pretty good!
What are any or all of these kits called as u can't find them anywhere, can anybody help please, I just wanna know what they are called,
Love from india 😘😍🤩🤩😘😍
And its really looks cool
Those prices though...yikes. Gigpig and Wizzdrum are both well over a grand. SmackPac and Drummers Dream Kit (DDK) aren't even in production (yet) and they both look to be "Under two grand" via information of their websites. Seems a tad excessive for a convenient conversation piece. They seem fun and would be worth a look at about half the price ($500-$600).
Jared looks good in those jeans
I love that how much?
Best video on YT
Nice
I love drums
Awesome, so do we!
